“NOTES ON WHAT LIES AHEAD: GOLDING’S ‘LORD OF THE FLIES’ AS AN AMERICAN EULOGY” (WITH VIDEO)

  1. THEOLOGY

SCRIPTURE.  “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will show forth (recount and tell aloud) all Your marvelous works and wonderful deeds! I will rejoice in You and be in high spirits; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High!

When my enemies turned back, they stumbled and perished before You. For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging righteously. You have rebuked the nations, You have destroyed the wicked; You have blotted out their name forever and ever. The enemy have been cut off and have vanished in everlasting ruins, You have plucked up and overthrown their cities; the very memory of them has perished and vanished.

But the Lord shall remain and continue forever; He has prepared and established His throne for judgment. And He will judge the world in righteousness (rightness and equity); He will minister justice to the peoples in uprightness. The Lord also will be a refuge and a high tower for the oppressed, a refuge and a stronghold in times of trouble (high cost, destitution, and desperation).

And they who know Your name [who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy] will lean on and confidently put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek (inquire of and for) You [on the authority of God’s Word and the right of their necessity].

Sing praises to the Lord, Who dwells in Zion! Declare among the peoples His doings! For HE WHO AVENGES THE BLOOD [of His people shed unjustly] remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the afflicted (the poor and the humble).” – PSALM 9:1-12, AMPC

KEY TERM: “HE WHO AVENGES BLOOD!” ‘Darash’ [דֹרֵ֣שׁ]: Make inquisition for blood” translates: “To thoroughly investigate murders or seek vengeance for bloodshed.” NOTE: Strong’s Hebrew 1875, דָּרַשׁ, threads the Old Testament with the idea of ‘Seeking’ in its richest sense—intent, inquiry, investigation, dependence, worship, even judicial pursuit. The verb can be Cognitive (‘to inquire’), Volitional (‘to seek earnestly’), or Forensic (‘to require an account’). ‘Each nuance reinforces that the God of Israel is personal, knowable, and willing to be found while also being the One Who CALLS EVERY DEED TO ACCOUNT.’”

QUOTATION. ‘Man crumbles to dust at the Presence of God; yea, though He shows Himself to us in his Robes of Salvation.’ We have read how Dreadful and how Terrible even the presence of angels have been unto men, and that when they have brought them good tidings from Heaven (Judges 13:22; Matthew 28:4; Mark 16:5,6). Now, if angels, which are but creatures, are, through the Glory that God has put upon them, so fearful and terrible in their appearance to men, how much more Dreadful and Terrible must God Himself be to us, who are but dust and ashes!’” ― JOHN BUNYAN, The Fear of God, 1679, edited

COMMENTARY. “Upon Muthlabben or, after the manner according to the ‘Death of the Fool,’ by which some song was known …’The Psalmist praises God for deliverance from his enemies and celebrates the Divine Government, for providing SECURITY to God’s people and PUNISHMENT to the Wicked.’ Thus encouraging himself, he prays for new occasions to recount God’s mercies, and confident of His continued Judgment on the wicked and vindication of the oppressed, he implores a prompt and efficient manifestation of the Divine Sovereignty.” R. JAMIESON, A.R. FAUCETT & D. BROWN, Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible, 1871; edited

II. TEACHING

“But woe (judgment is coming) to you Pharisees, because you [self-righteously] tithe mint and rue and every [little] garden herb [tending to all the minutiae], and yet disregard and neglect justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done, without neglecting the others.” – LUKE 11:42, AMP

ANTINOMIANISM.The word Antinomianism’ comes from two Greek words, ‘anti,’ meaning ‘against,’ and ‘nomos,’ meaning ‘law,’ Antinomianism means ‘Against the Law.’ Theologically, Antinomianism is the belief that there are no Moral Laws God expects Christians to obey. Antinomianism takes a Biblical Teaching to an Unbiblical Conclusion. ‘The BIBLICAL Teaching is that Christians are not required to observe the Old Testament Law as a means of salvation. When Jesus Christ died on The Cross, He fulfilled the Old Testament Law (Romans 10:4Galatians 3:23-25Ephesians 2:15). ‘The UNBIBLICAL conclusion is that there is no Moral Law God expects Christians to obey.’” – Got Questions, ret. June 18, 2026; edited

Behold America in 2026! And the Ugly Fruit of the ‘Once Saved Always Saved’ (OSAS) Heresy. Reasoning: ALL our sins – past, present, and future – were all taken care of at Salvation, Christians have no further Moral Duty to Obey Christ.

Thus, DONALD TRUMP, the Darling of the White Evangelical Church, is President for the second time. Thus, a virtual Antichrist rules the United States of America with the Evangelical’s blessings. Thus, the name of this present Trump Era is, properly: ‘THE AGE OF LAWLESSNESS.’

“For the mystery of lawlessness [rebellion against divine authority and the coming reign of lawlessness] is already at work; [but it is restrained] only until HE who now restrains it is taken out of the way. Then THE LAWLESS ONE [the Antichrist] will be revealed and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of His mouth and bring him to an end by the appearance of His coming.” – 2 THESSALONIANS 2:7-8, AMP

LOSS OF THE RULE OF LAW. For direct empirical evidence of the catastrophic Loss of the American Order, we turn to the findings of a distinguished panel of Professors of Law, Social Science, Government, and Political Science under the name, Bright Line Watch.

The title of their rigorous Overview is: “Erosion of the Rule of Law in Trump’s Second Term” (February-March 2026 Survey; edited). What follows is a summary of their MAIN FINDINGS.

  • OPEN. “From February 19–March 6, 2026, Bright Line Watch and the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA Law conducted their first joint survey of legal experts — federal judges, lawyers, and law professors — alongside Bright Line Watch’s frequent surveys of political scientists and the public. The results provide the most detailed picture to date of experts’ assessment of the state of the U.S. legal system during Trump’s second term.

‘The Federal judges, elite lawyers, and academics in our sample perceive a significant Erosion of the Rule of Law since TRUMP returned to office, including politicized law enforcement, a dysfunctional Separation of Powers, and Executive-Branch overreach. Legal experts generally view the Erosion of the Rule of Law as more severe than the public currently perceives it to be.’

  • RULE OF LAW. “‘When asked to comment on the most important threat to the Rule of Law in the U.S., three in four federal judges who answered the question expressed explicit or implicit concern about the Trump Administration, including all seven Democrat-appointed judges and two of five Republican-appointed judges.’ One Republican-appointed Court of Appeals judge wrote that ‘The Nation is strong as is its commitment to the rule of law, but the current president presents the greatest threat in decades.Three of twelve legal conservative law professors faulted Trump or the GOP in their comments. And more than half of the elite lawyers and law professors who served in high-level government roles (U.S. Attorney, State Supreme Court Justice) explicitly or implicitly cited the Trump Administration in their responses.
  • THE JUDICIARY. “‘Most legal experts agree that Trump is using Executive Power excessively.’ Of those, legal conservatives are far more likely than legal liberals to say the Supreme Court is constraining Trump. Divisions are narrower for lower courts, which both legal liberals and conservatives see as constraining Trump. Only a minority of legal experts are confident that the Supreme Court will handle Trump administration cases impartially — a figure that masks a vast divide between legal conservatives (who are overwhelmingly confident) and liberals (who are not). ‘Only two in ten legal experts agree that the Supreme Court has made appropriate use of the Emergency [Shadow] Docket since Trump’s return to office, though more than half of legal conservatives agree.’”
  • POLITICIZATION OF JUSTICE. “‘Nine in ten legal experts say the Trump administration has used the Department of Justice (DOJ) to go after enemies and provide benefits to allies.’ Legal liberals say these actions happen more frequently under Trump than Biden; legal conservatives disagree. More than ninety percent of legal experts believe that the prosecution of New York Attorney General Letitia James and of former FBI Director James Comey were motivated by politics. (Our survey asked about Comey’s first prosecution.) These two prosecutions were viewed differently than several other cases involving political figures in which experts were divided or saw politics as playing little role. Almost half of Federal judges are concerned about Harassment if they rule against the Federal Government, but Fears of Violence are much less common. Substantial minorities of elite lawyers are concerned about facing legal sanctions or professional consequences for taking a legal action against the government.”
  • LAW PRINCIPLES. “‘Legal experts say standards are not being met for nearly every institutional check on Executive Power: Majorities say the Constitution, Legislature, and Judiciary (including both the lower courts and the Supreme Court) are failing to limit the Executive and that the standard of judicial independence is not being met’ … On most Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Principles, legal liberals and conservatives rate U.S. performance as poor. Less than a fourth of legal experts believe that U.S. Government agencies do not punish political opponents, law enforcement is not exploited for political purposes and remains neutral, investigations of public officials are not compromised, Government officials face sanctions for misconduct, and Government officials do not use public office for private gain. Legal experts also express little confidence in U.S. performance on civil liberties and freedom of expression principles.’”
  • CONFIDENCE IN INSTITUTIONS. “Legal experts indicate high confidence in Federal District and Circuit Courts and the Federal Reserve. ‘But very few express confidence in other institutions such as the Supreme Court, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Presidency, and Congress.’ Legal conservatives are more likely than legal liberals to express confidence in many institutions.”
  • THREATS TO THE RULE OF LAW. “‘‘Legal experts identify numerous recent events as posing serious or extraordinary threats to the Rule of Law, including the Department of Homeland Security subpoenaing user data for anti-ICE accounts from tech companies, a Federal judge finding that ICE disobeyed nearly 100 court orders in Minnesota, and Trump pardoning defendants in January 6 cases.’ On the other hand, a strong majority of legal experts consider the Supreme Court ruling against Trump’s tariffs to be an extraordinary or serious benefit to the Rule of Law. These assessments do not vary significantly across professional subgroups.”
  • SUMMARY. “‘Overall, legal experts rated the Rule of Law in the U.S. today at its lowest point since 2015;’ consistent with the broader Pattern of Democratic Erosion documented in previous BLW surveys of political scientists. This Pattern holds across all three legal expert subgroups surveyed: Federal Judges, Elite Lawyers, and Law Professors.”

III. STREAMING TOWARD ENTROPY

“We did everything adults would do. What went wrong?Maybe there is a Beast … maybe it’s only us.”  WILLIAM GOLDING, Lord of the Flies, 1954; edited

It doesn’t take a Ph.D. in physics or political scienctist to understand that we are living inside the very belly of a word that aptly describes this unique, this arguably unprecedented moment in human history. That word is:

“CHAOS.” [Biblical] That Confusion, or Confused Mass, in which matter is supposed to have existed, before it was separated into its different kinds and reduced to Order, by the creating Power of God” (N. Webster, American Dictionary, 1828). [Secular] Chaos refers to a state of complete

Disorder, Confusion, or a Lack of Predictable Organization. Depending on the context, it can describe everyday situations, a formless primordial void, or a complex scientific concept where seemingly random events actually follow hidden patterns” (AI Overview, ret. June 19, 2026). [Scientific] The idea of Entropy comes from a Principle of Thermodynamics dealing with energy. It usually refers to the idea that everything in the Universe eventually moves from Order to Disorder (from Certainty to Uncertainty), and Entropy is the measurement of that Change.” In Sum: Everything in the Cosmos dies.’

In order to explore this massive concept in its application to what is now taking place in the world today, and particularly in America, we turn to Professor AJAY M, who teaches English for Sri Sathya Sai University For Human Excellence in Kamataka, India. The title of his monograph is, Breaking the Chains of Civilization: A Study of Authority and Anarchy in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies(English Journals, Mar. 27, 2024; edited).

  • ABSTRACT. “‘William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies’”is a thought-provoking novel that explores the Loss of Civilization and Power.’ Set on a Deserted Island, the story follows a group of boys who are left to fend for themselves after a plane crash. Initially, the boys attempt to establish a System of Rules and Order, but as time goes on, their Primal Instincts begin to take over, leading to Chaos and Violence. This paper undertakes a comprehensive exploration of the intricate dynamics among Innocence, Authority, and Societal Order as depicted in Golding’s seminal novel. Through a meticulous examination of these thematic elements, this study reflects the profound Metamorphosis experienced by the group as they grapple with their Descent into a State of Primordial Chaos. The research underscores the precarious and delicate nature of innocence when confronted with the COERCIVE FORCE OF AUTHORITY and the omnipresent Spectre of Fear, thereby illuminating the enduring pertinence of Golding’s literary work in the ongoing discourse on the complexities of human nature and society.”
  • INNOCENCE. “‘The boys stranded on the Island at the beginning are innocent and naïve, having been raised in a civilized society. They believe in the inherent goodness of humanity and trust in the authority of adults.’ This belief in the inherent goodness of humanity is reflected in Ralph, who can be regarded as the Protagonist, who embodies this innocence with his fair hair and clear eyes symbolizing his purity. Initially, the boys attempt to maintain Order and follow the Rules of their former society, establishing a System of Democracy and Organization. They hold meetings, elect Ralph as their leader, and create rules such as the conch shell being used as a symbol of Authority.

The boys’ initial efforts to create a Civilized Society reflect their Innocence and their belief that Society is inherently good. However, as time passes, the boys begin to lose their innocence and Descent into Savagery. The Constraints of Civilization and Authority fade away, and the boys are left to their Primal Instincts.’ They begin to hunt, engage in violence, and turn against each other. This Descent into Savagery shows the Loss of Innocence and the Inherent Darkness within Humanity. The contrast between the boys’ Initial Innocence and their eventual Descent into Savagery highlights the theme of the novel, which is the inherent Evil within Human Nature. ‘The boys’ Loss of Innocence is a powerful commentary on the Nature of Society and the Human Condition, showing that even those who are raised in a Civilized Society are capable of Great Evil.’” Selah. Selah.

  • POWER. “‘As time passes, the boys’ innocence is corrupted by their Thirst for Power, and Ralph’s leadership is challenged by Jack, who represents the Desire for Dominance and Control.’ Jack’s obsession with hunting and killing, as well as his manipulative tactics, gradually erode the boys’ Moral Principles. Initially, the boys are committed to maintaining Order and working towards Rescue, but as Jack’s influence grows, their priorities begin to shift. ‘The Pursuit of Power leads to a breakdown of the boys’ Moral Code, and they become more interested in satisfying their immediate desires and impulses than in maintaining order and working towards the Rescue.’ The conflict between Ralph and Jack highlights the dangers of unchecked ambition and the corrupting influence of power. Jack’s Desire for Dominance and Control leads him to become increasingly violent and savage, and he manipulates the other boys to gain power and influence. The boys’ Descent into Savagery is a direct result of their pursuit of power, and the breakdown of their Moral Code is a reflection of the corrupting influence of Power. ‘The novel shows how Power can lead individuals to prioritize their interests over the Greater Good and how it can be used to justify even the most heinous acts.’”
  • COLLAPSE. “The lines from [Dr.] William Ophuls’ book ‘Immoderate Greatness: Why Civilizations Fail’ (2012), ‘The Society’s original vigour, virtue, and morale have been entirely effaced. Rotten to the core, the Society awaits Collapse, with only the date remaining to be determined. It speaks to The Idea that Societies, over time, can become corrupted and decayed to the point of Collapse. In the context of “Lord of the Flies,” this idea is reflected in the Loss of Civilization that the boys experience.’ At the beginning of the novel, the boys are part of a civilized time passes, their innocence is corrupted by their thirst for power, and they become more and more savage, losing their respect for the rules and norms of society. They discard their clothes, paint their faces, and engage in primitive rituals, completely abandoning their sense of civilization. The quote suggests that the original Vigour, Virtue, and Morale of the Society have been entirely effaced, or erased, in the boys’ case. They have become rotten to the core, with their morality and civility eroded to the point of collapse. The only thing remaining is the date of their collapse, as it is inevitable given the direction they are headed. ‘Thus, the quote from Ophuls’ book emphasizes the idea that Societies can become Corrupted and Decay over time, leading to their eventual Collapse.’”
  • FEAR. “‘The Role of Fear in the Loss of Innocence is a central theme. The boys’ Fear of the Unknown, the Beast on the Island, and their Mortality is the driving force behind their Descent into Savagery.’ Fear causes the boys to behave violently and to form Alliances for Protection, leading to the Breakdown of Order and the abandonment of their previous innocence. The boys’ Fear is further fueled by their Imaginations, which make them see the Island as a hostile and terrifying place. This is evident in the boys’ discussions of the Beast and their reactions to the island’s natural phenomena, such as the storm that destroys the signal fire. As the boys’ Fear intensifies, their moral sense becomes overwhelmed, and is evident in their increasing Violence and their disregard for the rules and norms of society. ‘The boys become increasingly focused on their “Survival,” willing to engage in any behaviour that will ensure their Safety, regardless of the consequences.’ The role of fear in the loss of innocence is a common theme in literature and psychology. The psychologist Abraham Maslow, for example, identified Safety and Security’ as Basic Human Needs that must be met before Higher Needs can be pursued. Fear, therefore, plays a crucial role in determining our behaviour and the decisions we make. ‘In “Lord of the Flies,” Fear drives the boys to abandon their Innocence and become increasingly Savage. The novel suggests that Fear is a powerful force that can overwhelm our Moral Sense and lead us to engage in Destructive Behaviour.’”
  • CONCLUSION. “‘In Conclusion, “Lord of the Flies’”serves as a stark reminder of the Fragility of Human Civilization and the ease with which it can crumble when the constraints of society are removed.’ Golding’s exploration of Power, Civilization, and Fear illustrates how quickly Innocence can be lost and Morality abandoned when left to our Primal Instincts. The boys’ Descent into Savagery and Violence on the Island highlights the importance of societal norms and values in shaping human behaviour and preserving Innocence.

‘Moreover, the novel emphasizes the Destructive Nature of Unchecked Power, as demonstrated by Jack’s obsessive Desire for Control and Dominance.’ His disregard for the rules and his willingness to engage in violent behaviour leads to the breakdown of order and morality, ultimately resulting in tragedy. Golding’s work also underscores the importance of maintaining Order and Morality in Society. Without these values, humanity risks losing its humanity, devolving into Chaos and Violence. ‘The novel serves as a Warning against the Dangers of allowing Unchecked Power and the importance of preserving Civilization to prevent the Decay of Moral Values.’”

JOHN ADAMS. “While our country remains untainted with the Principles and Manners which are now producing Desolation in so many parts of the world; while she continues sincere, and incapable of insidious and impious policy, we shall have the strongest reason to rejoice in the local destination assigned us by Providence.

‘But should the people of America once become capable of that deep simulation towards one another, and towards foreign nations, which assumes the language of Justice and Moderation while it is practising Iniquity and Extravagance, and displays in the most captivating manner the charming pictures of candor, frankness, and sincerity, while it is rioting in Rapine and Insolence, this country will be the most miserable habitation in the world; because we have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by Morality and Religion. Avarice, Ambition, Revenge, or Gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a Moral and Religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.’”  From “To the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts,” 11 October 1798; edited

IV. LAST THOUGHTS: BIBLICAL RESISTANCE

“Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], TO STAND! [‘histémi’ (στναι) firmly in your place in covenant with God and not be moved’].” – EPHESIANS 6:13, AMPC

HOW TO FIGHT. I am overjoyed to offer some powerful wisdom on this issue from a former colleague at Focus on the Family. GARY ALAN TAYLOR, or “Gat,” as we affectionately renamed him. He is now Cofounder here in Colorado, “The Sophia Society,” with a Mission of providing “a sacred space for spiritual formation by exploring, experiencing, and cultivating intimate union with our Creator … [part of a] Global Movement of spiritually mature, personally transformed individuals embodying the Revolutionary Way of Love, Compassion, and Truth in the modern world.’

Always a bit of a nonconformist historian by nature and education, he has written the perfect Conclusion for our discussion. It is titled: “Christ & Culture: 3 Ways to Resist Christian Nationalism,” published just last February 9, 2026, in their flagship online journal (edited).

OPEN. “My final semester in college, I took a course that would eventually change my life. Christ and Culture’ encouraged my fellow classmates and me to ask basic questions about what it means to follow Jesus in American Culture. Is America a Christian Nation? Was it ever? Should it be? Should Christians have power over culture, and what has happened to the marginalized when we were in power?’

As a naive undergraduate who didn’t even know it was possible to be a Christian and not be a Republican, I had all the answers. I believed in American Exceptionalism,’ that there was a special place in God’s heart for the United States and that God blessed America even at the expense of other nations. Why? Because we were given a ‘Manifest Destiny.’ We are righteous. ‘WE [AMERICANS] ARE GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE!’”

  1. REMEMBER OUR ROOTS. “In its infancy, the Church was an underground, anti-imperial band of ‘Cultural Misfits’ living on the margins of society. They had no power, little wealth, and shared all they had in common. They were universally nonviolent. And though they were hunted, persecuted, and oppressed, they prospered as a ‘Community of Resistance’ to the brutal normalcy of the Roman Empire. This fledgling Community saw the Cross of Christ as the central political event in all of history, and realized the Blasphemy of identifying any earthly political order with the Reign of God. That is, until the Fourth Century when Constantine arranged a little marriage between the Bride of Christ and Caesar. Ever since then, Christians have been the great Defenders of Empire, colluding with the Powers that be to carve out our own, mostly ‘White Christian Nation.’ But as Christians, our task isn’t to join in any Nationalistic Cause or promote Slaveholder Religion, but rather to remember we are members of an Alternative, Global Community whose social, economic, political, and ethical allegiances are to ‘Christ Alone!’ Our fealty is to the Global Kingdom of God and can never be reduced to any National Identity. We are not ‘Americans First,’ but rather, in the words of ethicist Stanley Hauerwas, “A New People who have been gathered from the Nations to remind the world that we are in fact One People.’”
  2. FOLLOW THE WAY. “‘From his first testing in the Desert to the last one in the Garden, Jesus’ unceasing temptation was the plea of the crowds and of His disciples to strike out on the path of “Righteous Kingship” by bringing His Kingdom to fruition through Power and Coercion,’ writes theologian John Howard Yoder. Yet He never became a violent revolutionary. Whenever the disciples wanted to use force to bring about God’s good ends, He rebuked them. Peter, raising his sword in Christ’s own defense, was admonished: ‘Put away your sword,’ Jesus told him, ‘Those who use the sword will die by the sword’ (Matt. 26:52). ‘The Way of Violence is not the Way of Jesus.’ He chose to fulfill His Kingdom through Weakness, not Coercion—which might be why the Religious Leaders of His day and ours would rather follow Barrabas the Insurrectionist rather than Jesus the Nonviolent Resister.

‘And if we keep in mind that Jesus reveals the very nature and character of God, we have to deal with the Reality that Jesus was poor, powerless, vulnerable, and an Enemy of the State.’ He entered the world as a disenfranchised Baby and left the world as a defenseless Man on a Cross. In his book Following Christ in a Consumer Society [1981], Father John Kavanaugh discusses this at length. He asks, ‘Why did God reveal Himself in the form of a poor Peasant?’ There were so many other options. Why not enlist the Elite who could really change things? Why not use the Benefactions of Power and Prestige? In every cultural frame, Christians must face up to this kind of God. We must ask ourselves anew: ‘What kind of God does this reveal?’ Mostly, a God who apparently loses to the powers that be, which is probably why we have such contempt for the Cross.”

    • SPEAK TRUTH TO POWER. “‘For decades, White American Evangelicals have become the de facto Mouthpiece for Christian Nationalism, spouting lies, promoting conspiracy theories, and openly promoting racist policies at home and abroad.’ Televangelist Paula White, a member of Donald Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Council, went so far as to claim God ordained the Trump presidency. Stranger still, Robert Jeffress, the Pastor of a megachurch in Dallas, turned ‘Make America Great Again’ into a hymn! How bizarre. How utterly unprophetic.

‘The last thing we need are more courtly priests and pastors willing to cozy up to power. We need a COUNTERNARRATIVE, Prophets who Speak Truth to Power!’ People like Dorothy Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Oscar Romero. We need Saints, not Militants, people willing to get dirty for the cause of Christ. Maybe that’s what author and missionary Lesslie Newbigin meant when he wrote, ‘The place of the Church is thus not in the seats of the Establishment but in the camps and marching columns of the Protestors.’ Instead of a powerful, Nationalistic Christianity,’ we need a ‘Prophetic Christianity’—A Christianity that calls into QUESTION the very Empire in which we live and move and have our being. And in a world ripe with Domination, divided by Racism, entrenched in Patriarchy, and ruled by the Wealthy at the expense of the poor, our role is not to seek Power, but to Be Prophetic!’”

CODA. The great French diplomat, political philosopher, and historial who wrote Democracy in America in two sweeping volumes in 1835 and 1840 provides a deeply thoughtful capstone to our study.

How is it possible that Society should escape Destruction if the Moral Tie be not strengthened in proportion as the Political Tie is relaxed? And what can be done with a people which is its own Master, if it be not Submissive to the Divinity?”
