“Ask yourself: Are you testing the limits of God’s precious gift of Grace? Are you tempting Christ to indulge your sin in the face of your outright Rebellion? Have you convinced yourself, ‘I’m a New Covenant believer, covered under Jesus’ Blood. Therefore, God won’t judge me’? Beware! By continuing in your sin, you’re crucifying Christ afresh, as Hebrews warns against (see Hebrews 6:6). How? When you treat Jesus’ great Sacrifice with utter disregard, you willfully put Him to an open shame, not just in the world’s eyes, but before all of Heaven and Hell (see 6:6). FIRST THOUGHTS

A dear friend just wrote to me yesterday concerning this unending Battle for the Soul of the American Church, saying this: “Dr. Kelly, this is getting so hard.” And another: “The other night…my stomach ached because of the stress of the election,” his wife commenting on that rainy night, “Even the heavens are weeping.”

ON WEARINESS. Each of which put me in mind of a stunning comment by the Prophet Daniel, a very probable Signature of Our Times.

“And he [the Antichrist] shall speak words against the Most High [God] and shall wear out the saints of the Most High and think to change the time [of sacred feasts and holy days] and the law; and the saints shall be given into his hand for a time, two times, and half a time [three and one-half years].” – DANIEL 7:25, AMPC

Without attempting to specify just ‘When’ the three and one-half years take place, I can observe the following with some confidence.

WEAR OUT. From the Hebrew term, ‘Bela’ [בְּלָא], meaning: “To wear away or out; to afflict, or harass constantly; to persecute.” From a root word, ‘Balah’ [בָּלָה]: “To become old, wear out; waste away; use to the full (in the days of their prosperity); to consume or spend, become spent; to waste or impair by rubbing or attrition; to lessen or diminish by time; to impair, diminish or destroy by gradual attrition or decay; to diminish the strength of.”

COMMENTARY. “The unnamed interpreter explained the Fourth Beast, the ten horns, and the pompous ‘Little Horn’ [Antichrist].’ The latter will blaspheme the Most High, persecute the saints, and intend to change the Jewish calendar for three and a half years…But he will [ultimately] be stripped of his power and the glorious Everlasting Kingdom of our Lord will be ushered in. DK’S TAKE. My interpretation is that the Antichrist (or “Little Horn”) begins his Persecutions of the true saints of the true Church early on, but somewhat surreptitiously, as with ‘Quiet firings, intimidations, threats and promises, provocations and subterfuge, and intrigue – that is his Nature as a liar and thief. As with Adolf Hitler before him (his Template), he will first ‘Seduce the ignorant, sycophantic Church to neutralize her, then proceed to increase the intensity of his oppressions up to and including arrests, imprisonments, and even capital punishment. – cf. ON ENDURANCE

The Central Idea here is that we Resist the Tyrant and the attendant Temptation to quit under Antichrist’s relentless engineering, to ‘Tire us out’ by adding stresses and afflictions to our lives. This, long before the really hard stuff comes.

Small Illustration for me is, falling asleep while trying to pray or study the Word in my morning devotion times. Then of course come thoughts and even dreams and visions of horrible things happening to me, requiring us to speak out loud: “No! I do not accept these portents of destruction.”

These as starkly opposed to the Dreams and Visions from God, promised to us in the Last Days by the Prophets. – cf. Joel 2:28; Habakkuk 2:2-3

But of the Former, as my Warrior-Mom used to pray it: “In the name and authority of Jesus Christ, I don’t receive the package!”

ON PERSEVERANCE. “Because lawlessness is increased, the love of most people will grow cold. But the one who endures and bears up [under suffering] to the end will be saved.” – JESUS OF NAZARETH, MATTHEW 24:12-13, AMP

ENDURES. From the Greek term, ‘Hupomenó’ [ὑπομένω]: “To stay behind, to await, endure. Usage: (a) I remain behind, (b) I stand my ground, show endurance, (c) I endure, bear up against, persevere; literally, remaining under (the load), bearing up (enduring); for the believer, this uniquely happens by God’s power; tarry behind or abide [with those who remain true to Christ]; bear bravely and calmly; to sustain a load of miseries (or chastening); that quality that does not surrender to circumstances or succumb under trial.”

COMMENTARY. “It is a General Statement that those who stand fast, enduring persecutions without apostatizing, will be delivered at Christ’s Second Advent. No one should imagine that Apostasy will be a means of escape or safety. Only those who have True Faith shall be saved. Although saving Faith may have lapsed, it always has the quality of permanence.” – WILLIAM MACDONALD, Believer’s Bible Commentary, 1995, pp. 1293-1294; edited

So it is that ‘Staying the Course’ has profound implications for one’s life and lifestyle, fruitful witness, and more ultimately, being ‘Swept Up’ to be with Him in that thunderous Day of days, upon His Appearance in the clouds. – cf. Matthew 24:29:31; 1 Corinthians 15:51-55; 2 Thessalonians 2:1-10

THE CHALLENGE OF ‘BEING DIFFERENT’

One of the concepts that has always baffled me a bit over the decades of following Christ is this whole idea of being, “A peculiar people.” You will please indulge my default into contemporary music once more, as I mention the song, ‘Creep,’ originally released by Radiohead in 1992.

The plaintive lines in that song, with which so many Americans can identify, both Religious and Secular, are these: “But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo. What the h— am I doin’ here? I don’t belong here.”

I have heard this song performed in recent months and years, slowed down to engage the deep sense of Alienation that the song portrays, and I find it moving for all of us who experience that sense of ‘The Vagabond,’ in a world that we find less and less ‘like us.’

VAGABOND. “Wandering; moving from place to place without any settled habitation; as a vagabond exile. A vagrant; one who wanders from town to town or place to place, having no certain dwelling, or not abiding in it. By the laws of England and of the United States, vagabonds are liable to be taken up and punished.” – NOAH WEBSTER, 1828

Lest you think this a theological stretch, consider if you will the very Words of the Messiah.

“And it occurred that as they were going along the road, a man said to Him, ‘Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.’ And Jesus told him, ‘Foxes have lurking holes and the birds of the air have roosts and nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.’” – LUKE 9:57-58, AMPC

A ‘DIFFERENT’ PEOPLE. So back to this idea of being “Peculiar,” unique or different in ways that Distinguish us from ‘The World Spirit’ that dominates the planet throughout history. And, Scripture would argue persuasively, all the more during The Last Days.

Here’s how Peter the Apostle defined this crucial characteristic of the true disciple of the Lord.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” – 1 PETER 2:9-10, KJV

PECULIAR. From a rather ‘peculiar’ Greek term, ‘Peripoiésis’ [περιποίησις]: “Refers to preservation, acquisition. Usage: acquiring, obtaining, possessing, possession, ownership; properly, make one’s own; completely obtain, i.e. as a full possession (to real advantage, LS) – literally, ‘for abundant (all-around) gain;’ possession, one’s own property; belonging to a person and to him only.”

COMMENTARY. “‘A peculiar people’ – Compare the notes at Titus 2:14. The margin here is purchased. The word ‘Peculiar,’ in its common acceptation now, would mean that they were distinguished from others, or were singular. The reading in the margin would mean that they had been bought or redeemed. Both these things are so, but neither of them expresses the exact sense of the original. The Greek λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν laos eis peripoiēsin) means, ‘A people for a possession;’ that is, as pertaining to God. They are a people which he has secured as a possession, or as his own; a people, therefore, which belong to Him, and to no other. In this sense they are ‘Special’ as being His; and, being such, it may be inferred that they should be special in the sense of being unlike others (unique) in their manner of life.” – ALBERT BARNES, ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 14 volumes, 1830-1839; edited

THE QUESTION. Are we willing, beloved, I mean truly WILLING, to be so bone-deep committed to ‘this Jesus,’ that we are willing to ‘Be Different’? With the understanding that Society normally hates those who are ‘Different’ than they, especially if that Difference is Convicting of their own sins.

Here is a hard saying from our King, and not everyone can hear it.

“If the world hates you [and it does], know that it has hated Me before it hated you.If you belonged to the world, the world would love [you as] its own and would treat you with affection. But you are not of the world [you no longer belong to it], but I have chosen you out of the world. And because of this the world hates you.

Remember [and continue to remember] that I told you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But they will do all these [hurtful] things to you for My name’s sake [because you bear My name and are identified with Me], for they do not know the One who sent Me.” – JOHN 15:18-21, AMP

Ponder this down deep, my friends, in anticipation of what is yet to come.

‘COME OUT!’

This leads us inexorably to the Cry from the Prophets and the Lord to John and us all at Patmos:

“‘My people, COME OUT of the midst of her! And let every man save his life from the fierce anger of the Lord!’…I then heard another voice from heaven saying, ‘COME OUT from her, my people, so that you may not share in her sins, neither participate in her plagues.” – JEREMIAH 51:45, REVELATION 18:4, AMPC; emphasis added

THE HEBREW. The emphatic form found in the word, ‘Yatsa’ [יָצָא]: “To go or come out (as a commandment); shoot forth [with haste]; take flight, involving an escape; to depart in order to avoid God’s wrath; go forward from the place where they go from evil to evil; issue out of, or pull out and away; even, ‘be risen’ from.”

THE GREEK. Taken from the term, ‘Exerchomai’ [ἐξέρχομαι]: “To go or come out of; with mention of the place out of which one goes, or of the point from which he departs; of those who leave a place of their own accord; to come forth from physically, arise from, to be born of; equivalent to [or in order] to be uttered, to be heard; get out in order to escape.”

FROM WHERE? Now this for me was the more dramatic discovery, as we weave together the perfect Symmetry of the Old and New Testaments. There is one place that the Lord despises, and would never have His people have commerce with, ever. You know it’s name already:

‘Flee from Babylon, now!’

In the Jeremiah Passage of course, Yahweh is commanding His people, the Jews, to come out of Physical Babylon, or what theologian CHARLES ELLICOTT warned of:

“The ruin of all who support idolatry, infidelity, and superstition, is needful for the revival of true godliness; and the threatening prophecies of Scripture yield comfort in this view. The great seat of antichristian tyranny, idolatry, and superstition, the persecutor of true Christians, is as certainly doomed to destruction as ancient Babylon.” – ‘Commentary on the Old and New Testaments for English Readers,’ 1882-1897; edited

The Revelation Passage is clearly demanding that all true Christians ‘Come out of Spiritual Babylon!’ So, to The Question, once posed before in an earlier study of ours, ‘Who or What’ is Spiritual Babylon.

JACK WELLMAN, pastor, scholar and apologist writes: “Today, we can read about the ruins of [Physical] Babylon but in essence, there is a Spiritual Babylon today… When Babylon is said to have ‘fallen, fallen,’ this may indicate that another Babylon-type, an economic giant, will arise in the end times or perhaps it is now arisen and is already part of the world’s system, but to say it is fallen twice means that there was the first fall of Babylon that Isaiah prophesied by the Medes and then in the latter days, she will fall once again. In the wake of this, God sends a warning to His people” to ‘Come out, without delay!’ – ‘What Christians Want to Know,’ ret. November 6, 2020; edited

IN SUM. Whatever your spiritual or political station, I appeal to ALL in this hour, to heed the Lord’s nearly shouted Commandment to get our houses in order. And yes, both Material and Spiritual, for they go hand in glove toward a LIFESTYLE that either Honors God or Opposes Him.

He is Testing us, beloved, in order to give us every last opportunity To Prepare: For the work remaining to us, and for His Appearance, to both Judge the unrighteous and Rescue the righteous on the whole earth and the nations.

A WARNING TO THE CHURCH

As I was working on this Commentary, a Song of David was brought to mind, and just this morning confirmed by a dear and courageous pastor friend, ‘Jonathan.’ Last name withheld to protect the innocent in these Days of Treachery.

KING DAVID SPEAKS. It is necessarily long and detailed. Please pay close attention to every Word of Instruction regarding these weighty matters.

“Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His own inheritance. The Lord looks [down] from heaven; He sees all the sons of man; From His dwelling place He looks closely Upon all the inhabitants of the earth—

He who fashions the hearts of them all, Who considers and understands all that they do. The king is not saved by the great size of his army; A warrior is not rescued by his great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear Him [and worship Him with awe-inspired reverence and obedience], on those who hope [confidently] in His compassion and lovingkindness, to rescue their lives from death And keep them alive in famine.” – PSALM 33:12-19, AMPC

Can you hear it Church? Do you grasp this, Pastors? America shall not now, nor ever has been before ‘Saved’ by Politics. But only by Politics bowing to its Sovereign.

Founding father SAMUEL ADAMS’ words seem to have been lost on us in this Day of Political Idolatry, for which we are paying a bitter price.

“Neither the wisest constitution nor the wisest laws will secure the liberty and happiness of a people whose manners are universally corrupt. He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of his country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man. We must not conclude merely upon a man’s haranguing upon liberty, and using the charming sound, that he is fit to be trusted with the liberties of his country.” – ‘The Public Advertiser,’ 1749; edited

IMPACT. It is nearly impossible to me still, to grasp the enormous Departure from such a God-breathed Moral Framework in supporting an indisputable Despot such as Donald John Trump, and affixing the name of “Cyrus” upon him. Or “David.” Or “The King of Israel,” known only by One Name:

Jesus, the Christ, the soon coming Messiah, that Lion of Judah about to roar into the Affairs of both Church and State – and the Church shall be visited first. The Price for which we shall pay, and are already paying, is beyond human language.

CODA. And though the Nation has today Voted to Expel Trump from office in a Majority political gesture, yet THE CHURCH, beloved, Votes’ for this Beast at a steady 80 plus percent. And that, and that, is why America shall be inexorably and severely Judged.

The Church as gone fully Rogue, and God has no more choice but to Punish.

ON LEAVING BABYLON

So whether you consider Spiritual Babylon to be New York City, as David Wilkerson proposed, or nothing more than a Symbolic, largely invisible ‘City’ whose major goals are to materially Enrich herself, and return to a practice of Pagan Worship – God is saying, without hesitation or much more patience, frankly:

‘Get out!’

What does that look like, in everyday, practical terms? That’s where we go next to close out our study.

THE REQUIREMENT. “So, come out from among [unbelievers], and SEPARATE (sever) yourselves from them, says the Lord, and touch not [any] unclean thing; then I will receive you kindly and treat you with favor, And I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” – 2 CORINTHIANS 6:17, AMPC; emphasis added

Here is where the Spiritual and Practical rubber meets God’s Narrow Road. Paul’s Letter to Corinth here teaches us volumes in a single Instruction, all the more pointed in these Last Days suffused in compromise and idolatry.

BE SEPARATE! This key idea is taken from the Greek, ‘Aphorizó’ [ἀφορίζω]: “to mark off by boundaries from, set apart. Usage: I rail off, separate, place apart; from those unwilling to obey the Gospel; to exclude as disreputable [placing a stain on the name and witness for Christ]; to cast out of society as wicked and abominable; to become ‘separated to the Gospel,’ in order to be selected for some office or work (for God).”

This pretty much teaches itself, does it not? But indulge me to earn my keep by pointing out a few important ideas for those of us who are ‘Coming out of Babylon.’

NOT MONASTICISM. This Call is clearly not to become an ascetic, find yourself a comfy little cave somewhere, deck it out with the basics, build a little fire, shut the door to the world, and settle in for the rest of your days so you don’t become ‘contaminated’ by the World. No! Recall the Aphorism that even Jesus taught: “Be in the world but not of the world.” – John 17:14-16

THE DISTINCTION. Now here is a searing point not written of much these days. You are NOT to be separate from sinners in the World. Good night! That would subvert the very Commission we are all set upon (cf. Matthew 5:13-16; 28:19-20). But where we must be careful, is Trafficking with Apostates who practice their Darkness while still using the name of Christ to do it. From these, ‘Be ye separate!’ For ‘such bad company corrupts all your good morals.’ Worse, it assassinates our Christian witness. – 1 Corinthians 15:33

TOUCH NOT THE UNCLEAN. Here is severe warning indeed, to not even be seen close to or ‘touching’ the Unclean thing. Okay, so what, exactly, is that? From the Greek, ‘Akathartos’ [ἀκάθαρτος], meaning: “That which is impure; not pure (because mixed), i.e. adulterated with ‘a wrong mix’ [of God’s truth and foreign teachings], and hence ‘Unclean’ (because tainted by sin); in a moral sense, unclean in thought and life; the Septuagint takes it to mean all idolatrous worship and heathen impurity.”

ON PLEASING GOD. I recall again the intrepid Olympian runner and Christian missionary, Eric Liddell, made famous in the Academy Award winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’ (1981). When asked by his sister, “Why do you run?” He replied in magnificent fashion: “I believe God made me for a purpose, but He also made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure.” WILLIAM MACDONALD writes of it so plaintively: “The recompense for Standing with Christ outside the Camp of Evil is to know Fellowship with the Father in a new and more intimate way. – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 1846; edited

THE PRINCIPLE. And, I quickly and sadly add, to ‘Refuse Standing’ with Him means that one becomes increasingly blind and deaf and unresponsive to His Presence, and to His Word. Which in turn Neutralizes Discernment, without which they cannot distinguish the differences between Good and Evil, the True and the False, the Right versus the Wrong way.

Which is, to be blunt, precisely what has happened to millions of Christians in America today, who yet Choose Rebellion despite God’s Warnings for four years straight now.

ANTICHRIST & BABYLON. Paul writes of this massive Tragedy of the End Times, when both the spirit and the person of Antichrist will become rife in the culture that has increasingly taken on the very heart and soul of Spiritual Babylon. .

“The coming of the [Antichrist, the lawless] one is through the activity of Satan, [attended] with great power [all kinds of counterfeit miracles] and [deceptive] signs and false wonders [all of them lies], and by unlimited seduction to evil and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love of the truth [of the gospel] so as to be saved [they were spiritually blind, and rejected the truth that would have saved them].

Because of this God will send upon them a misleading influence, [an activity of error and deception] so they will believe the lie, in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth [about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ], but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.” – 2 THESSALONIANS 2:9-11, AMP

So do we have this Great Schism in the Body of Christ in America today, as the Church takes up sides – the Majority moving with the Spirit of the Age, the comparatively tiny Minority choosing instead to Stand with and for God and Truth.

LAST THOUGHTS

We hear a lot these days about “Identity Politics,” and for good reason: It is everywhere in America today, and explains a large chunk of our Tribal Divides. Wikipedia does a good job of breaking it down for us.

“Identity Politics is a term that describes a political approach wherein people of a particular religion, race, social background, class or other identifying factor form exclusive socio-political alliances, moving away from broad-based, coalitional politics to support and follow political movements that share a particular identifying quality with them. Its aim is to support and center the concerns, agendas, and projects of particular groups, in accord with specific social and political changes.” – November 6, 2020; edited

EXAMPLES. Such alliances as ‘Identity’ as with a feminist who always votes for female candidates regardless of policies, or a black person who primarily supports causes designed to empower the black community. Or, or, as with a Christian who aligns with ‘Republican-Trump’ almost no matter what, forsaking (or forgetting) their Prime Identity ought to be Christ and Truth.

This is a huge point, beloved. Please don’t overlook it, for several reasons, including the one recounted below.

THE SEARCH FOR IDENTIY. The very human and universal question, ‘But who am I, really?” is as old as Mankind itself, and we all address it in our lives, more than once. Here is an interesting take on it from ‘Psychology Today,’ in a piece penned by University of San Diego professor, DENNIS M. CLAUSEN.

“One of the most pervasive themes in American Literature is ‘the Search for Identity.’ Our earliest authors celebrated literary characters who separated from family, ancestry, and the past to head west. This was also a celebration of the severing of our European ties as we tried to create a national ‘American’ Identity. Later, it became a celebration of the Westward movement and the explorers who left their families and ancestral pasts to pursue their dreams out West…

For some time, however, we have seen a different pattern emerging in our national consciousness. Studies have demonstrated that Americans, more than ever before, are researching their ancestral connections as they sense that our national identity and values have changed significantly during their own lifetimes. They want—indeed, desperately need—to be more grounded in a continuance of ancestral connections.” – August 16, 2018; edited

THE POINT. I believe all this suggests that Americans – both Christians and Secular – are Searching ‘desperately’ indeed for the answer to that Question of questions: “Who am I, really?” My Thesis: Once we have Known and then Lost our Identity in our Maker, we become Untethered to our True Identity, to replace it with all manner of Human Substitutes.

Or again in the words of sociologist Robert Bellah, many Americans, even Christian Americans, have ‘Lost their Sense of Place’ in the world, and are desperately trying to Regain it – but in all the wrong ways, and in all the wrong places.

CODA. In closing, I am reminded of David’s plaintive cry: “Who am I to you, O Lord, and why would you take notice of me?” Or words to that effect (cf. 2 Samuel 7:18; Psalm 8:4). I have asked that very question more than once, and recently.

I love the way Scottish divine, writer and reformer WILLIAM GARDEN BLAIKIE put it, describing King David’s touching inquiry.

“He expresses wonder at the past, at God’s selecting one obscure in family and obscure in person; he wonders at the present: ‘How is it Thou hast brought me thus far?’ and still more he wonders at The Future, the provision made for the stability of his house in all time coming.” – ‘The Expositor’s Bible: The Second Book of Samuel,’ 1905; edited

How very sweet this reflection, beloved, as we Remember from whose Whole Cloth we are cut and fashioned. For this is the Key to be both willing and brave and yes, Proud of the One who first carved us, this Father to us all who would embrace His only Son, to live for and become fused and grafted into Him, the very God of the Universe.

The Prophet gives us rich end to our study.

“Hearken to Me, you who follow after rightness and justice, you who seek and inquire of [and require] the Lord [claiming Him by necessity and by right]: look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the hole in the quarry from which you were dug; Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him when he was but one, and I blessed him and made him many.” – ISAIAH 51:1, AMPC

CHOSEN, then, if you dare it, to become Different. For the Honor of His mighty name. For the joy of our Identity become Fused forever with His. And for the Rescue of as many as we can touch with His incandescent Light and Hope in this Age of deep Darkness and Despair. – cf. ISAIAH 60:1-5

So why, beloved, would we ever dare to risk all of that, for a tiny little speck of temporary Political Pottage? Why indeed, why indeed.
