SCRIPTURE. “Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.” – 1 TIMOTHY 3:8-10, NKJV

THE DEACON. From the Greek term, ‘Diakonos’ [διάκονος], meaning: “A servant or minister; then of any one who performs any service, an administrator; from a root word translated as ‘in the dust laboring;’ a voluntary attendant [to a leader], as with a servant to an employer, bishop or overseer; he is considered, at root however, to be in the employ of God, not a man [having a higher duty to Jesus Christ than to the bishop or leader above him]; properly, a chief servant; hence, an agent appointed to transact or manage business under the authority of another.”

DK NOTE: In effect, these are what we would call, ‘Middle Level’ leaders or managers, and as such are the Focus of the Series – as over against the bishops, teachers, high profile, nationally prominent celebrities, for that is what they have become. The Implication: God is doing an old-fashioned ‘End-Around,’ to move to the next level of leadership to see if He can awaken them. Selah.

FIRST THOUGHTS

Let me start with an unambiguous Declaration: The vast majority of the American Church has become a Blasphemy to the sacred name of Jesus Christ. To be even clearer: This historic ‘Blasphemy’ has everything to do with DONALD JOHN TRUMP.

Ponder that long and hard and prayerfully. It could save your life.

THREE GROUPS. For some who read this, you instantly know what I am saying, and agree with it. Another group will recoil in horror (and some anger), saying or thinking, ‘How dare you!” But a third group, the one I am primarily addressing, will have something like this in mind: “I have sensed something is very wrong, but can’t quite put my finger on it.”

Today and the for the rest of this important Series, therefore, we shall have a great deal to say about Clarifying what may still be somewhat confusing to you. With God’s help.

LEADERSHIP AND VIRTUE

One of the earliest Definitions of Strong Leadership that has stayed with me over the decades since I first read it in my undergraduate college days, is from a Roman educator and rhetorician-philosopher named MARCUS FABIUS QUINTILIANUS – “Quintilian” for short.

From his classic, ‘Institutio Oratoria’ written around 95 AD, we read this about this rather remarkable ancient template for leadership.

“In this work, Quintilian establishes that the perfect orator is first a Good Man, and after that he is a Good Speaker. He also believed that a speech should stay genuine to a message that is ‘Just and Honorable.’ This came to be known as his Good Man Theory, embracing the message that if one cannot be genuinely good, then one cannot be a good speaker [or teacher-leader] for the people. This theory also revolves around being of Service to the people. A good man is one who works for the good of the people and the prosperity of society.” EDITORS, ‘Wikipedia,’ updated January 28, 2021; edited

VIRTUE AS FIRST PRINCIPLE. Even the pagan Romans understood that the first characteristic of the ideal, effective leader is Principled Character. Amazing, in contrast to an America today that has completely forgotten or abandoned this First Principle.

The Founders and Framers certainly had not, as they carved out their brilliant, biblically rich Template for the American Order. One of my favorite quotes affirming this wisdom is from SAMUEL ADAMS.

In a letter to James Warren that he penned from Philadelphia while attending to his duties at the Continental Congress, dated February 12, 1779, he wrote this:

“A general Dissolution of Principles & Manners will more surely overthrow the Liberties of America than the whole Force of the Common Enemy. While the People are Virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their Virtue they will be ready to surrender their Liberties to the first external or internal Invader. How necessary then is it for those who are determind to transmit the Blessings of Liberty as a fair Inheritance to Posterity, to associate on publick Principles in Support of Publick Virtue.”

Notice that the health of the still nascent Republic would require that the ‘General Publick’ would of necessity have to live more or less ethically, but all the more so, the Leaders. For what issue could be expected for a Moral People to be led by an Immoral Commander?

None, save for the Darkness spewing from today’s American Corruption of such lofty Principle, whether it come from Jerusalem or Rome – or Washington, DC.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP

One of the most stunning developments of American Leadership in this hour, is the realization that Secularists have more accurate memory of sound leadership principles than does the Church. As further illustration of this deeply troubling fact is the following statement from the Social Science Community.

“‘Effective leadership is essential to a functioning society.’ If we did not have effective leaders there would be Anarchy. Anarchy can be characterized as a chaotic situation in which the people are not controlled by rules or laws (imagine the zombie apocalypse). On the other end of the spectrum there is Absolute Totalitarianism. Totalitarianism forces all aspects of your life under the authority of the State, usually with one leader (and his subordinates) calling all the shots (imagine Nazi Germany). Neither of these extreme situations could be defined without the mention of Leadership. In the former, there are no leaders. In the latter, there is an all-powerful leader who gives you no say in your life. However, we all know there has to be a Better Alternative that resides somewhere in between the two extremes.” – EDITORS, ‘Applied Social Psychology,’ November 30, 2014; edited

And America has had that ‘Better Alternative’ for centuries, birthed from a richly Judeo-Christian Template, yet today hangs precariously between the Winds of Anarchy or Totalitarianism.

AN AMERICAN REICH? “Imagine Nazi Germany” indeed, beloved. Indeed. I and a growing number of others have argued that America is treading the very same path taken by Post-Weimar Germans in the 1930s. Lest you think this too extreme, consider the following from a ‘Newsweek’ piece by SHANE CROUCHER, April 9, 2018.

“Stephen B. Jacobs has a warning from the past for America today: It’s happening again. At 79 years old, he is among the youngest of the living Holocaust Survivors and was born six years after Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. But Jacobs can remember life in the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald; what the Nazis did to him, his family, his friends. He worries about what’s happening right now in America, where he has lived and prospered since arriving a couple of years after Buchenwald’s Liberation on April 11, 1945 …

In Trump, Jacobs says, the Far-Right sees an ‘Enabler.’ ‘I’m involved with New York real estate, I know this man personally,’ says Jacobs, whose eponymous architecture firm celebrated its 50th birthday in 2017. ‘Trump is an Enabler. Trump has no ideas. Trump is out for himself. ‘He’s a sick, very disturbed individual. I couldn’t say that Trump is a Fascist because you’ve got to know what Fascism is. And I don’t think he has the mental power to even understand it’ …

Jacobs calls New York, where he lives, an ‘Island of Resistance.’ But he says Washington will soon realize too that ‘Fascism has to be resisted. Fascism could have been won in Spain. It could’ve been stopped. But Appeasement of Fascism is what led to everything,’ Jacobs warns. This is a man who lived what happens when Fascism isn’t stopped before it metastasizes.”

EVEN FOX NEWS. Surprisingly, this report was issued BY MORGAN PHILLIPS from the Fox News Desk on September 29, 2020, emphasizing the Jewish View of American politics under Trump. Listen ever so carefully.

“The Jewish Democratic Council for America compared the United States under President Trump to Germany under Adolf Hitler in the 1930s in a new ad targeting Jewish voters in swing states. The ad features a split-screen of images from 1930s Germany, with Hitler supporters waving Nazi flags, and photos from Trump rallies and white supremacy gatherings. ‘History shows us what happens when leaders use Hatred and Nationalism to divide their people,’ the narrator says. ‘As anti-Semitism and White Nationalism rise to dangerous levels in America, we are all less secure.’”

If the Jews see this coming, why cannot the Gentile Christian Church, beloved? Just why is that?

TODAYS’ CHRISTIAN LEADER

What I am about to report here should, I say ‘should’ make your spiritual skin crawl. But it may not, given the staggering Denial of basic Christian Principles by almost all of our high visibility Christian Leaders. Along with agreement among the majority of our leading Pastors. With abject Silence among the rest.

So here we go. Taken from a report by ‘Slate,’ posted by MOLLY OLMSTEAD on January 7, 2021, one day after the Insurrection of January 6 in the DC Capitol, by Christian and non-Christian Trump supporters.

THE SETTING. “In the crowd of Insurrectionists who seized the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Christian imagery was rife. Alongside Confederate flags and white supremacist symbols, protesters shouldered crosses, waved ‘Jesus Saves’ signs, and hung oversized ‘Jesus 2020’ banners. One rioter who made it inside the building carried a “Christian flag.” Outside, on the National Mall, people chanted, “Christ is king.” As the reporter Jack Jenkins noted, some in the crowd referred to the neo-fascist Proud Boys as ‘God’s warriors.’”

ERIC METAXAS. “There is no doubt the election was fraudulent. That is the same today as yesterday. There is no doubt Antifa infiltrated the protesters today and planned this. This is political theater and anyone who buys it is a sucker. Fight for justice and Pray for justice. God bless America!”

TWITTER. “According to former attorney general WILLIAM BARR, the Department of Justice found no evidence of ‘fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.’ Election officials at the Department of Homeland Security said ‘the November 3rd Election was the most secure in American history.’ Voter fraud of any type is incredibly rare, reported The Associated Press and Reuters. Officials and experts warned ahead of Election Day that most interference in US elections comes in the form of misinformation campaigns, many of which are intended to create distrust in America’s electoral process.”

BURNS & GRAHAM. “[Metaxas] was not alone among Evangelical public figures. The televangelist MARK BURNS called the assertion that Trump supporters were responsible a ‘lie from the gates of hell.’ And while the evangelist FRANKLIN GRAHAM warned that ‘our country is in trouble’ and called for Christians to pray for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, he also speculated that the people “who broke the windows” were ‘most likely’ Antifa. ‘To tell people to go home, it’s not for me to decide that,’ he said.”

MCCONNELL & CANER. “Silence, in some cases, spoke volumes, as when Truett McConnell University president EMIR CANER [brother of disgraced former Liberty University professor Ergun Caner] made no comment on the protests but took to Twitter to grouch about Facebook’s Trump ban and urged his followers to use Parler instead. Meanwhile, other pastors tried to offer solace in an awkwardly apolitical way, posting prayers for a country in turmoil, with no indication of who might be responsible for that turmoil.”

UNREPENTANT MORALISTS. “RICK WARREN, one of the most influential evangelical pastors in the country and someone who has voiced concerns about Trump’s policies, also pleaded for Trump to speak to his supporters. ‘Armed breaching of capitol security behind a confederate flag is anarchy, unAmerican, criminal treason and domestic terrorism,’ he said on Twitter. The televangelist PAT ROBERTSON, a prominent Trump supporter who criticized the president for living in an ‘alternate reality’ after he lost the election, directly turned on Trump, accusing him of going ‘mad.

THE MINORITY. “ADAM GREENWAY, the president of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, was less verbose: ‘Violence is never the answer. God have mercy on and help us all.’ The Southern Baptist ethicist RUSSELL MOORE, a Trump critic, called the rioters’ actions ‘inexcusable’ and Trump’s response to the crisis ‘shameful beyond words.’ Turning to his followers, he expressed grief and rage and urged them to accept that Biden was lawfully elected. ‘If Christians are people of truth, we ought to be the first to acknowledge reality,’ he wrote. R. ALBERT MOHLER, JR., the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, spoke at length about the day’s events and made the boldest statement against the president, calling ‘the cult of personality’ the ‘greatest danger to the American Experiment.’ Mohler, who had opposed Trump four years ago, supported the president’s reelection bid.”

THE SAD REALITY. In all of this, Two Truths must be reckoned with concerning the Condition of American Christianity. ONE: The great majority of our leaders support the presidency of Donald Trump, apparently despite the barbarism of January 6 in Washington. TWO: We may safely conclude from this that this Apostasy from Orthodoxy will continue in the Days Ahead, absent of any evidence of a groundswell of opposition to Trump’s vile conduct, or the Republican Party, about to exonerate him in the upcoming Impeachment Trial II.

In Sum: The American Church has completely Lost her Savor, and is of no longer of any effect as a City on a Hill, shedding Light on all this present Darkness. For me, the Church has become effectively Dysfunctional, if not fully dead. Selah.

THE STANDARDS

SCRIPTURE. “Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.” – 1 TIMOTHY 3:8-10, NKJV

My reason for profiling today’s American Christian Leadership was to stand it in stunning Theological Contrast to what follows. One cannot miss the drastic differences between what Paul’s Letter lays out concerning what is expected of our Leaders, versus what we have tragically and dangerously become.

So, to work.

DEACONS. I had at first wondered why I was led to deal with Second Tier Leaders, if you will; Deacons are not the Big Kahuna’s of Church life. By the Greek term, ‘Diakonos’ [διάκονος], it refers to: “A minister; a waiter, servant; then of any one who performs any service, an administrator; usually refers to the Lord inspiring His servants to carry out His plan for His people; from the root, ‘Diakon,’ is ‘probably connected with the verb ‘Diōkō,’ ‘to hasten after, pursue‘ (perhaps originally said of a runner; one who executes the commands of another, especially of a master; a sergeant, attendant, minister; to minister, regulate, set in proper [the king’s] order.”

REVERENT. From the Greek word, ‘Semnos’ [σεμνός]: “Reverend, venerable, serious; honorable, grave, serious, dignified; properly, what is august (dignified, has “gravitas“); weighty, deeply respected because viewed as majestic (having “gravity”); grave; does not merely indicate the earthly dignity (‘Kosmios’) lent to a person, but who owes his modesty to that higher citizenship which is also being one who inspires respect, but reverence, worship and awe; rather invites and attracts (because of it).”

NOT DOUBLE-TONGUED. Here we have a stern prohibition for leaders; taken from the term, ‘Diligos’ [δίλογος], or: “Given to (meaningless) repetition, double-speak and deceitfulness; literally, ‘two sayings,’ used uniquely in this passage; double in speech, saying one thing with one person, another with another (with intent to deceive); equivocal, telling a different story on different occasions; ‘double-speaking’) describes someone leaving a deliberate misimpression – acting like a spiritual ‘weathervane’ by reversing their position (taking different sides of an issue whenever it is convenient or expedient). This person is unstable (vacillating), ‘speaking out of both sides of their mouth.’”

NOT MUCH WINE. The key word here is, “much,” taken from ‘Polus’ [πολύς], meaning: “Much, many; often; ‘much in number;’ emphasizes the quantity involved; signifies ‘many, numerous’; . . . with the article it is said of a multitude as being numerous;’ great in amount; abundant, plenteous; great, strong, intense, large [in proportion]; beyond that which is ‘enough,’ (becoming a part of one’s lifestyle).” DK: In the current vernacular, not given to ‘getting buzzed,’ which dulls one’s mental, spiritual and physical ability to lead. My Principle: ‘On Call 24/7.’

NOT GREEDY. Now we turn to a Major Pitfall for so many American Leaders, what the Scriptures call, “filthy lucre,” or ‘ill-gotten gains’ nearly at any price – including Truth. From a big word in the Greek, for a very big sin – ‘Aischrokerdés’ [αἰσχροκερδής]: “Greedy, fond of base gain; shameful, base, venal, filthy; (i.e., corrupt desire or motivation for personal material increase of some kind); the opposite of blameless, in the unworthy pursuit of increase that benefits only self.” ALSO: “Having a keen appetite for food, drink, money; ravenous; voracious; very hungry for gain; followed by of; as a lion that is greedy of his prey. Psalms 17:12; having a keen desire of anything; eager to obtain.”

PURE CONSCIENCE. Taken from two Greek words: ‘Katharos’ [καθαρός]: “Clean, pure, unstained, either literally or ceremonially or spiritually; guiltless, innocent, upright.” And ‘Suneidésis’ [συνείδησις]: “A persisting sense or consciousness (of what is right and wrong); properly, joint-knowing, i.e. conscience which joins moral and spiritual consciousness as part of being created in the divine image. Accordingly, all people have this God-given capacity to know right from wrong because each is a free moral agent (cf. Jn 1:4,7,9; Gen 1:26,27); key to distinguishing or discerning Truth from Falsehood; augmented or diminished by the quality of one’s relationship to God.”

TESTED. No one becomes raised up by God to Leadership without a sometimes severe Testing; think Divine Gauntlet here, or the Bootcamp metaphor. All is Preparation, as with a combat soldier for the field of battle. From the Greek, ‘Dokimazo’ [δοκιμάζω]: “To test, by implication to approve; put to the test, prove, examine; to distinguish by testing, approve after testing; (to see if) I am fit; is done to demonstrate what is good, i.e., passes the necessary test; to scrutinize, to recognize one is genuine or deemed worthy; to try or prove in order to bring forth the good in us; God ‘tries’ us for good; Satan ‘tempts’ us to do evil.”

BEING FOUND BLAMELESS. To finish our Biblical Profile of the Christian Leader, we move to this last consideration – perhaps the most important of all in this age of Characterless Leadership everywhere. From the Greek, ‘Anegklétos’ [ἀνέγκλητος]: “Not to be called to account, unreprovable; irreproachable, blameless; beyond reproach; not merely unaccusable, but unaccused, free from any legal charge at all; unblemished, unspotted, unstained by serious sin; without fault; innocent; guiltless; not meriting censure; free from or not deserving of blame.”

TEMPERAMENT. Now here I add a personal insight that is found in VERSE 13 of this passage that cannot be overlooked, with this Caveat. IF one passes the above ‘Tests’ of Character as God builds it into our very Nature, then and only then are we serve with:

“Great boldness!”

From the Greek, ‘Parrésia’ [παρρησία], translated as: “Enhanced freedom of speech; openness, especially in speech; boldness, confidence; confidence (bold resolve), leaving a witness that something deserves to be remembered (taken seriously); free and fearless confidence, cheerful courage; the deportment by which one becomes conspicuous or secures publicity [for God’s good]; plainness, perspicuity of speech; liberty to say all that needs to be said; unwavering fearlessness and unhesitating confidence of faith in communion with both God and man, which characterizes one’s relation to Him.”

IN SUM: Unafraid of the opinions of men; only concerned with the Opinion of God.

LAST THOUGHTS

So does The Question beg an Answer: What went wrong? What happened to Christian Leadership over the past four years? This last section will only begin to address that vital matter; Part II next week will dive into the weeds on it.

But for now, this, just this, having ‘discovered’ it only this week for the first time during my research for this Essay.

“And I raised up some of your sons for prophets and some of your young men for dedicated ones [Nazirites]. Is this not true, O you children of Israel? says the Lord. But you gave the dedicated ones [the Nazirites] wine to drink and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. Behold, I am pressed under you and I will press you down in your place as a cart presses that is full of sheaves.” – AMOS 2:11-13, AMPC

‘DO NOT PROPHESY!’ So much here that explodes in my mind as Explanation of what happened to the American Church since 2016 that reveals one message: “Don’t tell us the Truth!” Though of course this Great Collapse began long ago, as I have argued, some 120 years ago at the Turn of the 20^th Century – and the Launch of The Modern Era.

“Then the Lord said, My Spirit shall not forever dwell and strive with man, for he also is flesh; but his days shall yet be 120 years.” – GENESIS 6:3, AMPC

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT. I continue to believe that America and her Church have reached their Last Stages of Supremacy, having increasingly Usurped the Authority of her Sovereign during all that time.

Let’s therefore consider TWO COMMENTARIES from the Sages of Yesterday, plus a Personal Anecdote, about this historic Forfeiture of ‘Priestly’ Duty.

ALBERT BARNES. “The world is mad against True Religion, because it feels itself condemned by it. People set themselves against Religion and the Religious, the Church or the Priesthood, only when and because they feel their power on God’s side against them. What people despise, they do not priest, as to the ‘Reign of Reason” in the First French Revolution. If the people in power had not respected the Nazarites, or felt that the people respected them, they would not have attempted to corrupt or to force them to break their vow.” – ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 1884; edited

MATTHEW POOLE. “But ye, for whose benefit both Nazarites and Prophets were raised, you who should have heard their Word, and imitated their example, gave the Nazarites wine; importuned, urged, or it may be (as is the custom of excessive drinkers) forced them to drink wine, to Violate their vow, and contemn God’s Law too, Numbers 6:3,4. By this passage it appears that they were Men in Authority who did this; it is not probable that mean persons who had no authority would enjoin silence on the prophets, Isaiah 30:10 Amos 7:13 Micah 2:6. It is evident Amaziah was chief priest in Beth-el, and by virtue of his Jurisdiction there Silenceth the Prophet(s) – The true, faithful, and plain-dealing Prophets, who rebuked their sins, required them to repent, and threatened judgments if they did not repent.” – ‘English Annotations on the Holy Bible,’ 1700; edited

THE DREAM. During a night of furious Unsettledness this week, I found myself still awake at 3:00 am, and literally called out: “Okay Lord, what now?” No audible answer, but somehow I fell into a fitful sleep, inside of which I ‘saw’ the following: ‘I was in some grand Christian University of some sort, though no specific institution was identifiable. I was accompanied by two highly respected academic officers, though again no identity was given me. They were troubled, angry actually, over something I had done or said. And once more, I was being escorted off campus, unceremoniously, left to myself, which found me wandering around the grounds, not knowing what to do or where to next go.’ When I awoke, my First Prayer on the day of my salvation came back to me loud and clear. “I want to be a good man now, Lord. I don’t want to be a bad man anymore.”

CANARIES IN THE COAL MINE. My understanding of all this is quite simply this: Beginning in 2015-16, Christian Leaders no longer desired to Please God and live by His Statutes. With the Rise of Donald Trump, following the fateful MEETING OF JULY 21, 2016 in New York, more and more Christian Leaders decided – for us – that Trump would be “Good” for the Christian Faith. In the years that followed, this ‘New Christian Right’ would increasingly Persecute those of us who would not bow.

This Persecution of the Remnant shall not abate in the days ahead, beloved, best I can assess the present Spiritual Climate in America. Selah.

CODA. As I draw our study to a close before next week’s Identification of just WHO ‘The Wolves’ are and what forms they are now taking, let me Conclude with a final thought brought to me as I finished the prep for this Commentary.

Many of you know it well.

“For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning [to Me] and resting [in Me] you shall be saved; in quietness and in [trusting] confidence shall be your strength. But you would not.” – ISAIAH 30:15, AMPC

“But you would not.”

Here is what JOHN GILL says of that devastating Reply from the Nation and Church to their Maker, who had repeatedly offered Rescue through Repentance and Return for so very long a time. Even 120 years, beloved. Even that long.

As this applies to our American Church Leaders to this very day, and the consequent 75 million Christian and non-Christian Trump Followers in tow, POLITICS would become the New God, our Golden Calf, the Alternate Path to National Salvation. Leaving our Nation shattered, divided, and increasingly incompetent and infertile.

Then JANUARY 6, 2021, with the first shots fired, the first blood drawn, and the first fatalities in what, short of a massive Divine Intervention, promises to be a Second Civil War. Between who, you ask? Good question.

Between ‘The Wolves’ and ‘The Saints’ of God.

MY FINAL WORD. I close with some of the richest words to have ever been penned by the Biblical Scribes, this time from who the Talmud and Christian Tradition identify as THE PROPHET SAMUEL.

“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” – JUDGES 24:15, AMPC

So may we all do this in the Days Remaining to us, according to His Charge to The Remnant of Christ in these last of the Last Days of history, as we have known them.
