NOTES ON GOD’S PREPARATION FOR THE APPROACHING STORMS: WEATHERING WEARINESS BY LONG ENDURANCE Part I

PART I: “RUNNING WITH THE FOOTMEN”

SCRIPTURE: “[But the Lord rebukes Jeremiah’s impatience, saying] If you have raced with men on foot and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? And if [you take to flight] in a land of peace where you feel secure, then what will you do [when you tread the tangled maze of jungle haunted by lions] in the swelling and flooding of the Jordan?” – JEREMIAH 12:5, AMPC

QUOTATIONS

WISDOM. “If your enemy is secure at all points, ‘Be Prepared’ for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.” – SUN TZU, ‘The Art of War,’ 5th Century BC; edited

COURAGE. “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the Truth of God except precisely that little point which the World and the Devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christianity.  ‘Where the Battle Rages,’ there the loyalty of the Soldier is proved, and to be steady on all the battlefield besides is mere flight and disgrace to him, if he flinches at that one point.” – A FOLLOWER OF MARTIN LUTHER, 2 April 1526, quoted in ‘Chronicles of the Schönberg-Cotta Family, 1865, p. 321; edited

HUMILITY. “The Road must be trod, but it will be very hard. And neither strength nor wisdom will carry us far upon it. This Quest may be attempted by the weak with as much hope as the strong. Yet it is oft the course of Deeds that move the wheels of the world: Small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere.” – J.R.R. TOLKIEN, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ 1954; edited

Selah.

  1. FIRST THOUGHTS

Jews have a favorite Yiddish word to describe a sometimes frequent habit in Times of Trouble: KVETCHING. Now, many of you already know what it refers to, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I am not immune to such predilection.

But let’s take a closer look, since it bears directly upon Today’s Study.

DEFINITION: “‘Kvetch’ literally means ‘Squeeze’ in Yiddish, and commonly refers to ‘whiningcomplaining, and grousing’ in the midst of tough situations. A person who ‘kvetches’ incessantly can also be referred to as a ‘Kvetch.’” – STAFF, ‘Chabad,’ November 2018; edited

Think my beloved TEVYA from the play, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ (1964, 1971) about here.

Lest you feel guilty for falling prey to this common affliction, especially in the Age of the Beast, take heart! Some of the greatest figures in the Bible were Kvetches, not the least of whom is my very favorite: The Prophet Jeremiah.

JEREMIAH, THE KVETCH. Take a listen to this necessarily lengthy Lament from the Prophet to God. I am always heartened by this passage, as it teaches us much about the human condition of even one of the great men of God’s Kingdom. And of His unmitigated, yet stern, love for us in our weaknesses.

“Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me to be a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither loaned, nor have men loaned to me, yet everyone curses me…

O Lord, You know and understand; [earnestly] remember me and visit me and avenge me on my persecutors. Take me not away [from joy or from life itself] in Your long-suffering [to my enemies]; know that for Your sake I suffer and bear reproach. Your words were found, and I ate them; and Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.  I sat not in the assembly of those who make merry, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone because Your [powerful] hand was upon me, for You had filled me with indignation.

Why is my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you indeed be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail and are uncertain?” – JEREMIAH 15:10, 15-18, AMPC

YAH’S RESPONSE. Now please don’t miss that last line where the Prophet dares to accuse God of being unfaithful. Yikes! I would not recommend it. But now consider God’s Reply, showing us much of His true heart – as over against some of the American Myths promulgated in too many of our churches these days.

“Therefore thus says the Lord [to Jeremiah]: ‘IF’ you return [and give up this mistaken tone of distrust and despair], then I will give you again a settled place of quiet and safety, and you will be My minister; and if you separate the precious from the vile [cleansing your own heart from unworthy and unwarranted suspicions concerning God’s faithfulness], you shall be My mouthpiece. [But do not yield to them.] Let them return to you—not you to [the people].

And I will make you to this people a fortified, bronze wall; they will fight against you, but they will not prevail over you, for I am with you to save and deliver you, says the Lord. And I will deliver you out of the hands of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the palms of the terrible and ruthless tyrants.” – JEREMIAH 15:19-21, AMPC

GOD’S ARDOR. You hear the Divine Loving Vehemence there, beloved?  And all of it, every bit of God’s careful blend of Firmness and Grace is dependent on Jeremiah’s “Return” to Faith (‘Shub’ [שׁוּב], ‘brought back from the point of departure for restoration of fellowship’).

That is the Voice of God that I hear nearly every day now: Insistent; Urgent; Commanding; Compassionate. And not the softer tones and gentle whispers of someone prodding us to ‘just be nice, no matter what.’

NOTE. This Voice is directly aimed at The Church and her Leaders – not the Unsaved. With them He is vastly more forgiving, since they “knew not” what believers understand – or should understand – to be True.

Jesus of Nazareth clarifies this Principle in crystalline prose.

“But he who did not know and did things worthy of a beating shall be beaten with few [lashes]. For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required; and of him to whom men entrust much, they will require and demand all the more.” – LUKE 12:48, AMPC

Now to offer still more depth, here is one learnèd interpretation.

THE COMMENTARY. “Jeremiah met with much contempt and reproach, when they ought to have blessed him, and God, for him. It is a great and sufficient support to the people of God, that however troublesome their way may be, it shall be well with them in their latter end. God turns to the people. Shall the most hardy and vigorous of their efforts be able to contend with the Counsel of God, or with the army of the Chaldeans? Let them hear their doom. The enemy will treat the Prophet well. But the people who had great estates would be used hardly. All parts of the country had added to the national guilt; and let each take shame to itself…

But he ‘complains,’ that he found little pleasure in his work. Some good people lose much of the pleasantness of religion by the fretfulness and uneasiness of their natural temper, which they indulge. The Lord called the Prophet to cease from his distrust, and to Return to his work. ‘IF’ he attended thereto, he might be assured the Lord would deliver him from his enemies. Those who are with God, and faithful to Him, He will deliver from trouble or carry through it. Many things appear frightful, which do not at all hurt a real believer in Christ.” – MATTHEW HENRY, ‘Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited

THE LESSON. I have made the point more than once that God is ultimately interested in what I shall call, ‘Raw Obedience.’ What I mean by that is that it is not always dressed out in pretty forms and phrases. It’s most often messy, neither the stuff of Sunday Soliloquies nor Hollywood Fables.

Life is gritty, it is often hard, and we must recall that Our Messiah once took human form and allowed Himself to be beaten and soiled and bloodied by the world’s violence and filth – that we might be saved. So also that He would forever have an organic knowledge of what it’s like ‘Down Here,’ midst all this Great Mess.

Straight to “The Story of the Two Sons” – One obeyed, yet ‘kvetched.’ The other one made the ‘pretty talk,’ but did not obey. Jesus asks: “Which of the two did the will of his father?” ANSWER: “The first.” – cf. Matthew 21:28-32

THE SANCTITY OF OBEDIENCE. Kvetching, while loathsome and annoying, is not the unforgivable sin. In fact, if combined with Obedience, it is ultimately salutary. Disobedience, when it is sustained over a long period of time, however, is entirely another matter.

Jesus said it this way:

“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you?…But the one who has [merely] heard and has not practiced [what I say], is like a [foolish] man who built a house on the ground without any foundation, and the torrent burst against it; and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.” – LUKE 6:49-50, AMP

THE QUESTION. Is the Church listening to our King today? Are we hearing the ‘Right Voice’ that He is truly, now fervently, speaking to us? Anyone, anyone at all. He’s still waiting – but not for long, beloved. Not for much longer.

  1. THE TEACHING

“[But the Lord rebukes Jeremiah’s impatience, saying] If you have raced with men on foot and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? And if [you take to flight] in a land of peace where you feel secure, then what will you do [when you tread the tangled maze of jungle haunted by lions] in the swelling and flooding of the Jordan?” – JEREMIAH 12:5, AMPC

DK, THE KVETCH. To self-indict a bit more to help us understand these Lessons quite frankly at my expense, here is what was happening in the days before I was impressed with this Scripture.

I found myself muttering a lot in the last month or more about how tough things got for me and the family at times. But then I’d catch myself, and say something like this: “But Lord! I know these are but light afflictions compared to those already being experienced by many of Your people, and compared to the hard times yet to come. Forgive me, Lord.”

THE DEEP DIVE. Now to The Teaching, bearing in mind that one of my great weaknesses is: Complaining about ‘being weary.’ When feeling that great weariness, I sometimes repeat it several times throughout the day: “I’m so tired, Father.” Not the best witness, beloved. A couple of times, sure. But a dozen is well over the line.

Enough said. Only so much self-deprecation is healthy. Now to work.

  • WEARIED. This from the Hebrew, ‘Laah’ [לָאָה], meaning: “To be weary or impatient [exhausted by the demands of life]; to become tired or parched; refers to sluggards and laziness; to faith with grief; become disgusted, loathe; having one’s strength much diminished by toil or violent exertion; the mind yielded to great discouragement.”
  • CONTEND. Here we have the requirement of all true followers of The Christ, especially in times of trial. From the Hebrew, ‘Tacharah’ [תַּחָרָה]: “Literally derived from ‘Habergeon,’ an Old English word for breastplate. In Job 41:26 (Heb. ‘Shiryah’) it is properly a ‘coat of mail’ [for battle]; the Revised Version has ‘pointed shaft.’ In Exodus 28:32 Exodus 39:23 , it denotes a military garment strongly and thickly woven and covered with mail round the neck and breast; to strive against in anger or fury; struggle in opposition to a foe; to debate fiercely; to wrangle.”
  • FLOODPLAIN. Now beloved, here is where our Christian mettle is to be tested in the days ahead. From the Hebrew, ‘Ga’own’ [גָּאוֹן]: “It refers to something or someone [an enemy] who is arrogant by self-exaltation, to heights of undeserved majesty; of great wealth or power; magnificence of great buildings; a swelling up in pride or pomp; of an increase, triumph; some translations (e.g., Amplified) allude to this: ‘Then how will you do [among the lions] in the [flooded] thicket beside the Jordan,’ indicative of a fierce struggle with a vicious foe.”

DK’S TAKE. Beloved, it could not be plainer: We are to be ‘Training for War’ in this Hour of Testing, and not for the Lord’s somewhat cynical reference to “a land of peace where we feel secure.” But why, oh, why do our Churches and Pastors tell us otherwise?

Here is another Severe Warning for those who continue to do so. Again, from our main protagonist, the Prophet Jeremiah.

“For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness (to greed for unjust gain); and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely. They have healed also the wound of the daughter of My people lightly and neglectfully, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.” – JEREMIAH 6:13-14, AMPC

Now to Seal this important Lesson in wise Commentary.

WILLIAM MACDONALD. “Jeremiah asks why the Lord, who is Himself righteous, allows the Wicked to prosper – such as the men of Anathoth – and permits the Righteous, like himself, to suffer. God answers that Jeremiah will meet more bitter opposition than this, including treachery from his own brothers. If he found it difficult to cope in relatively calm conditions (running with the footmen), what would he do in the severe trials that were coming (contending with horses)?” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 1005; edited

To add richness and texture to MacDonald’s remarks, eminent theologian and abolitionist ALBERT BARNES notes this: “The ‘Pride of Jordan’ is taken to mean the luxuriant thickets along its banks, famous as the Haunt of Lions (compare Jeremiah 49:19Jeremiah 50:44Zechariah 11:3). What will the Prophet do when he has to tread the tangled maze of a Jungle with the lions roaring round him?” – ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 1884; edited

IN SUM. My Dad was a World War II Navy submariner in the South Pacific. His generational Navy legacy was the birth of the Navy Seals, through the establishment of the Navy Amphibious Scout and Raider School in 1942 at Fort Pierce, Florida. Officially launched as the ‘Navy Seals’ in January of 1962, they had and still have a saying that is apt to our present lessons:

“The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat.” Selah.

  1. THE PREPARATION

After a review of a number of articles on Preparation for Spiritual Battle, I came across one by a mom, a housewife, and a freelance writer who made more sense than all the “Pretty Talk” experts (who shall remain unnamed).

FIVE SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL ATTACK. She has penned an excellent piece entitled, “5 Signs You’re in Spiritual Warfare and How to Fight It.” Published by DEBBIE MCDANIEL as a contributing writer for ‘iBelieve,’ retrieved on Good Friday, April 2, 2021; edited.

  1. ONSLAUGHT OF VARIOUS TROUBLES, LOSSES, AND TRIALS. The Enemy has a favorite tactic of ‘piling on’ in order to overwhelm and weaken us further when we are tired or troubled, so don’t be surprised when that takes place. Recognize it and from whom it issues, and you can remain steady in the midst of the din of intense spiritual battle. – cf. Isaiah 43:2
  1. ATTACKS OF PHYSICAL DANGER, ILLNESS, LIFE THREATENING LOSS. Here the Battle gets very serious, as most of us are familiar with such experiences in this Age of Covid. This is why we must martial all our spiritual and medical forces against such threats, at the same time not fearing even death, should the Lord permit it. – cf. Revelation 12:11
  1. INCREASED TEMPATION AND LURING TOWARD SIN AND WRONG CHOICES. Again we see how oftentimes we are attacked when weary or distracted, when Satan will strike with strategic assaults at that moment, to throw you off your thinking even more, while he has the opportunity. Realizing this is a first line of defense tactic – to avoid major decision making till things calm down. – cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13
  1. OVERWHELMING FEELINGS OF DESPAIR, DARKNESS OR FEAR. Clearly a common form of attack, we must be girded for such broadsides against our emotions, characterized by the sense of strong, even nearly suffocating Oppression. The sense that we cannot breathe, or think, or sort things out as we normally would while this ‘heaviness’ is all around us. Pray hard against it, then wait for relief; it always comes, as with my Circuit Ride Battle. – cf. Ephesians 6:12
  1. DEEP CONFUSION, CONDEMNATION AND GUILT, DULLED SPIRITUAL AWARENESS. This last one is an attempted kill shot from the Enemy, in the effort to convince us that we are not even Christians. We are too far gone, sinned far too much, to be considered His. The Key Strategy is, beloved, to “pull us away from Truth,” in which are to lovingly rejoice. – cf. Romans 1:25; 1 Corinthians 13:6

SEVEN KEYS TO STANDING FIRM. Now for the much Better News that God has provided all that we need to not only RESIST THE ENEMY successfully, but to Overcome him as we study and Learn of the Spiritual Disciplines that follow.

  1. THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. “God fills us with strength, wisdom, and discernment through His own Spirit to stay strong in the Battle. He never leaves us to fend for ourselves and fight in our own strength. We need His fresh filling every day, we need the Empowerment that only He can offer. Every believer has the Gift of God’s Spirit dwelling within them. The same power that raised Lazarus from the dead, parted the sea, broke open prison doors, and caused the lame to walk, is the same powerful Spirit still alive and at work within us today.” DK: I ask for such Infilling every single day; please do the same. – cf. Acts 1:8; Romans 8:26
  1. ARMOR OF GOD. “God reminds us not to go into the day without being prepared and equipped for battle. He tells us to take up his Full Armor in order to stand against the enemy’s schemes. Each piece has a specific purpose and is designed for our protection and covering. Just as a soldier would not go to battle unprepared, we also should be fully ready for the attacks we will face.” DK: I also pray this Armor upon me each morning, before leaving the house. Every day. – cf. Ephesians 6:11-17
  1. FERVENT PRAYER. My take on this is that we need more than a technically obedient, ‘I put in my prayer time today’ approach. For the Times Ahead of us, we shall be required to Intercede with depth, focus and real passion, with a whole heart, and with sometimes a brutal honesty about what is happening in our lives, and in the lives around us. And never stop conversing with God throughout the day. This is now life and death, beloved, so let’s keep Him near throughout the day. – cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17; James 5:16
  1. GOD’S WORD. “He arms us with the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to stand against the Enemy’s lies. Praying God’s Words back to Him [or to the Enemy] is a powerful weapon against the forces of Evil. It is Truth going out into Enemy territory. It reminds us that God knows our way and understands what we face today. It builds our Faith and our trust in God. It guards our hearts and focuses our minds back on Him.” DK: This is what Jesus did while contending with Satan in the desert; we must do the same. – cf. Matthew 4:1-11; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 3:16
  1. THE POWER OF PRAISE. “Praise invites God’s Presence. He dwells close to us when we praise Him. And praise is a powerful weapon as well. It makes the enemy flee. It pushes back the darkness the surrounds, and blocks the attacks and hissing lies over us. Evil will not stick around if we’re praising our God, who will fight our battles for us. In the story of Jehoshaphat, we see God miraculously defeat the enemy, because of the people’s obedience to praise Him.” DK: The most common form of Praise for me is Gratitude; thanking God for all He does for me, and often. – cf. 2 Chronicles 20:22; Psalm 22:3
  1. RAW OBEDIENCE. “Our willingness to Obey the Words and Commandments of Christ in a world that would say to walk our own way is huge. It sets a powerful example that says we are willing to die to our own desires and live for the glory of God. But it will never happen naturally. Our very flesh, our own desires and sin nature will fight against it every step of the way. It’s a daily choice that says we will be careful of every thought, we will take up our cross daily and follow Christ’s ways, not our own. Submit to God’s Authority. Be ruthless with sin, which is an open door for the Enemy to work. Resist him and he has to flee.” DK: As I taught before, do it at first without liking it, till you gradually get to the place where you love obeying Him. – cf. James 4:7; 2 Corinthians 10:5
  1. THE BLOOD OF CHRIST AND THE WORD OF OUR TESTIMONY. “We are Overcomers in this life because He has overcome. And our lives are hidden in Christ with God. No enemy or obstacle can touch our souls. When we have been set free by the Blood of Christ and the power of His sacrifice by Death on the Cross, we have a new identity in Him. We’ve been bought with a price, we are not our own, but covered by the grace and forgiveness of Jesus. We live victorious, and no demon or darkness can ever separate us from the Love of God which is in Christ our Lord. There is Power in the Name of Jesus.” DK: “Never give in, never give in, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense” (WINSTON CHURCHILL, Harrow School, October 29, 1941). Even if it kills you, beloved.  – cf. Revelation 12:11; 1 Corinthians 1:18

BY FEARLESS ENDURANCE. I cannot emphasize this last point enough. I have told you, that once you Lose the Fear of Total Loss, even your own life, you are fully Free in Christ, from all the Tethers of the World. You are become, as it were, a bona fide Citizen of Heaven, with all the rights and duties and privileges and high honors associated with it.

The mighty words of ALBERT BARNES once again pierce both body and soul in this vital regard. Quoted at length for its own raw power.

“‘And they overcame him.’ – That is, [the Enemy] was foiled in his attempt thus to destroy the [true] Church. The reference here, undoubtedly, is primarily to the Martyr Age and to the Martyr Spirit; and the meaning is, that Religion had not become extinct by these accusations, as Satan hoped it would be, but lived and triumphed. By their holy lives, by their faithful testimony, by their patient sufferings, they showed that all these accusations were false, and that the Religion which they professed was from God, and thus in fact gained a Victory over their Accuser. Instead of being themselves subdued, Satan himself was vanquished, and the world was constrained to acknowledge that the persecuted Religion had a heavenly origin. No design was ever more ineffectual than that of crushing the Church by Persecution, no victory was ever more signal than what was gained when it could be said that ‘The blood of the martyrs is the Seed of the Church’…

And they loved not their lives unto the death.’ – They did not so love their lives that they were unwilling to die as Martyrs. They did not shrink back when threatened with death, but remained firm in their attachment to their Saviour, and left their dying testimony to the Truth and Power of Religion. It was by these means that Christianity was established in the world, and John, in the scene before us, saw it thus triumphant, and saw the angels and the redeemed in Heaven celebrating the Triumph. The result of the attempts to destroy the Christian Religion by Persecution demonstrated that it was to triumph. No more mighty power could be employed to crush it than was employed by the Roman Emperors; and when it was seen that Christianity could survive those efforts to crush it, it was certain that it was destined to live forever.” – ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 1884; edited

DK’S TAKE. This is what it is to be totally, unreservedly BONDED TO CHRIST. Holding on to no thing nor any person nor any place or time – all is His, all belongs to Him, again, ‘lock, stock and barrel.’ He owns the Whole of us, beloved!

Better we now act like it, in Final Preparation for the Last Times, and minutes and hours of History as we have known it.

  1. LAST THOUGHTS

It has been often said that the thing we first run to in a Crisis effectively becomes our God. Was a time when Scotch and Drambuie were my weapons of warfare for tough times. At other times, a relationship that defined my most compelling vision for what made life worthwhile. Another Idol at another time or two was my title, position, authority and income.

All false gods, all of them, every single one.

A JEALOUS GOD. I have made much of the First Commandment in past Commentaries concerning how fervently God insists that we shall have “No other gods before Him.” As in: None, zero, nada, not even one tiny little one that nobody should be concerned about. Not a single one.

For His name is, EL KANNAH [אֵ֥ל קַנָּ֖א], ‘The God who is Jealous over us.’ One group of Messianic writers says it this way:

“God’s Jealousy, in contrast to envy, is rooted in Justice, Holiness and Love. It is a healthy, passionate, burning Devotion for us and an insistence that He will not share His position, praise, or glory with another (Psalm 83:18). ‘I will not give My glory to another or My praise to idols’ (Isaiah 42:8)…

With all the distractions of this world pulling at us from every side, we may need to examine our hearts from time to time to see if our love has grown cold [or worse, lukewarm] or if there is anything (or anyone) who has drawn the focus of our devotion away from the living God, who is also known as ‘El Kannah’ – The Jealous God.” – EDITORS, “Three Powerful Names of God,” ‘Messianic Bible,’ ret. Good Friday, April 2, 2021; edited

CODA. So there you have it all, beloved, top to bottom, start to finish: The Requirements for becoming ‘Ready, Willing and Able’ to serve God fully in the Last Days. To first learn to ‘Run with the Footmen’ [or Infantrymen, ‘grunts’ in Army vernacular] before being promoted to a ‘Full gallop with the Horses’ [or cavalry].

Then, finally, to be made strong and fierce for ‘Contending with the Lions of the Jordan’ as a Seasoned Warrior for Christ.

That we might fiercely Oppose and Fight Against: “The despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.” – cf. Ephesians 6:12

But who most often work through human beings. Even those, beloved, who today so many times call themselves, ‘Christian.’

So may God beat the Loud Drums more fiercely, and let the Shofar Blasts pierce the morning air with His Call to Spiritual Arms. Here, perhaps, best cast through the eloquent pen of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, mustering the courage of the then quivering troops at the Battle of Agincourt on October 25, 1415.

“But we in it shall be remembered —
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.” – ‘King Henry V,’  1600, Act IV Scene 3, 18–67
