FIRST THOUGHTS

Permit me to begin this important series by relating to you the Story of Kitty Genovese. Some of you may have already read of this tragic Morality Tale, but it sets in unforgettable stone the Central Narrative of these three teachings:

‘The Absence of God’ is the Greatest Terror a human being can ever experience.

THE STORY. “On March 13, 1964, Kitty Genovese was murdered in front of her home. She parked her car a number of feet from her apartment when all of a sudden, a man named Winston Moseley chased her down and stabbed her in the back twice. Due to the excruciating pain, Kitty screamed for help and a neighbor responded shouting at the criminal ‘Let that girl alone!’ Immediately after getting the attention of the criminal, Winston fled the scene and left the girl crawling towards her apartment.

Several witnesses reported to have seen Winston fled the scene with his car and returned ten minutes after the response of one of the neighbors. After seeing his prey lying on the ground almost unconscious [and no one assisting her], he stabbed the already wounded Kitty Genovese several times more. After this, he stole the money of the victim and sexually assaulted Ms. Genovese. A neighbor phoned the police and an ambulance arrived but was too late to help the assaulted Kitty Genovese.

Thirty-eight neighbors of Kitty Genovese were aware about the murder that was taking place during that time and yet all of them chose to do nothing in rescue of the assaulted girl. Why were such apathy, indifference and lack of concern observed from all the neighbors of Kitty? Two social psychologists started asking questions WHY the witnesses demonstrated a lack of reaction towards the victim’s need for help.” – EDITORS, “Bystander Apathy Experiment: Kitty Genovese Murder Explained,” ‘Explorable,’ July15, 2009; edited

ANALYSIS. Social psychologists JOHN DARLEY AND BIBB LATANÉ conducted an experiment to determine why nobody actually helped the dying woman, and this is what they found.

“Two Reasons were offered to explain the Bystander Apathy Effect. First is ‘Diffusion of Responsibility.’ This occurs when other people think that another person will intervene and as a result, they feel less responsible. The second explanation is ‘Pluralistic Ignorance.’ This refers to the mentality that since everyone else is not reacting to the emergency; my personal help is not needed. Seeing the inaction of others will lead to the thought that the emergency is not that serious as compared to perception when he is alone.” – cf. “Bystander Intervention in Emergencies: Diffusion of Responsibility,” ‘Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,’ 8(4), 1968, 377-383

THE POINT. As early as 1968 – a significant Decade of Redefinition in America – our people were showing clear signs of Disengagement from what we might call, ‘Rules of Moral Obligation’ to one’s fellow. This in stark opposition to our Judeo-Christian Call to offer Rescue in such emergencies, as with the Biblical Story of the Good Samaritan. – cf. Luke 10:25-37

The numbers grow even fewer when an emergency would require us to actually step in to save the life of someone being physically assaulted, at ‘Personal Risk’ to ourselves. Many of us have seen numerous videos recently of Asians being openly attacked on our streets, with observers either looking away or actually physically leaving the scene. Some due to the Diffusion of Responsibility Effect discovered by Darley and Latané, others due to an ‘Historic Absence’ of something – or Someone.

AS JESUS INSTRUCTS: “No one has greater love [nor stronger commitment] than to lay down his own life for his friends” (John 13:15). So what’s up, why are we so much less willing to render aid to a fallen person? The next section will address that important Question.

WHEN GOD IS NOT THERE

In a reference to Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s landmark Speech in Response to receiving the Templeton Prize in 1983, Orthodox Christian and former East European CHRIS BANESCU wrote this.

“Nobel laureate, Orthodox Christian author, and Russian dissident, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, in his ‘Godlessness: The First Step to the Gulag’ address, given when he received the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion on May 10 of 1983, explained how the Russian Revolution and the Communist takeover were facilitated by an Atheistic Mentality and a long process of Secularization which alienated the people from God and traditional Christian Morality and Beliefs.

He rightly concluded:

As poignant companion to this piece is that of Catholic priest FRANCIS AFU, who poses the Question of questions that we shall consider today.

“In a culture that is gradually Forgetting God, there is a growing sense that we are forgetting ourselves. We are becoming less and less human; giving in to behaviours that suggests we have Lost the Plot. Pithily, this discredits Jean-Paul Sartre’s assertion that the existence of humanity and his freedom is a proof of God’s non-existence. In other words, the Forgetfulness of God is the commencement of our freedom.

But how free are we when we forget God?” – ‘Dabar Online,’ July 20, 2020; edited

SECULAR FREEDOM. These are Two Universes of Discourse that define Liberty in vasty different ways. I will argue that America today wants Unbridled Freedom, which easily translates as Licentiousness. And from that logically flows what Jesus and the Apostles called, ‘Lawlessness.’

“And many false prophets will rise up and deceive and lead many into error. And the love of the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity.” – MATTHEW 24:11-12, AMPC

LAWLESSNESS. From the Greek term, ‘Anomia’ [ἀνομία], or: “Iniquity, disobedience, sin; properly, without law; the utter disregard for God’s Law (His written and living Word); includes the end-impact of law breaking – i.e., its negative influence on a person’s soul (status before God); not having or knowing of God’s Ordinances; contempt and violation of the Law, iniquity, wickedness; illegality, unrighteousness, transgression; disorder; rebellion against the Lawgiver.”

LORD OF THE FLIES. “William Golding’s 1954 novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ tells the story of a group of young boys who find themselves alone on a deserted island. They develop rules and a system of organization, but without any Adults to serve as a Civilizing Impulse, the children eventually become violent and brutal. In the context of the novel, the tale of the boys’ Descent into Chaos suggests that human nature is fundamentally savage.” – JEFFREY SOMERS, ‘Thoughtco,’ July 26, 2020; edited

CHRISTIAN FREEDOM. On the other hand, God speaks in diametric opposition to this worldly concept of freedom in an iconic passage known to just about every true disciple these days. This is the True Liberty in Christ and His Spirit.

“In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].” – GALATIANS 5:1, AMPC

FREEDOM. Here the Greek word for freedom is, ‘Eleutheria’ [ἐλευθερία]: “Freedom from slavery; generosity; independence; grace; the ‘perfect Law of Freedom’ from the bondage of corruption; freedom from restraint [from the enemy]; privilege or exemption from compulsion, or the undue power or control of another; such freedom can be personal, civil, political, and religious [spiritual].”

STAND FAST! In this Divine Freedom, we are to remain iron firm. From the Greek, ‘Stékó’ [στήκω]: “Stand firm; persevere [under trial]; to persist [no matter the situation]; to keep one’s standing in Christ; not to sin; to be stationery; to continue in covenant (as ordained); to set firmly or fix in place [so as not to be moved from it]; to remain, abide [as with a remnant].”

COMMENTARY. “Here we may render, In the Freedom then wherewith Christ made us free ‘stand fast.’ The Freedom thus bestowed is Spiritual Liberty which is quite independent of outward circumstances. St. Paul in chains, a prisoner in Rome, exulted in it. Nero on his throne, the master of the world, with thirty legions at his back, was the miserable slave of his lusts. Luther beautifully remarks: ‘Let us learn to count this our Freedom most noble, exalted, and precious, which no emperor, no prophet nor patriarch, no angel from heaven, but Christ, God’s Son, hath obtained for us; not that He might relieve us from a bodily and temporal subjection, but from a spiritual and eternal imprisonment of the cruelest tyrants, namely the law, sin, death, the Devil’.” -JOHN PEROWNE, ‘The Cambridge Bible,’ 1882; edited

THE PRINCIPLE. Whether we speak of an individual or a Nation of people, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17). However, and it is a massive ‘However:’ Where God’s Spirit is ‘Absent,’ there is only Slavery, Tyranny, Oppression, and ultimately, Death.

Selah, America. Consider this most deeply indeed.

In an excellent and penetrating piece entitled, “When God is Absent,” published on

January 25, 2021 by DR. M.D. HARRIS in his online journal, ‘MD Harris Institute,’ we once again visit a chilling illustration of the strictly Godless Nation:

Modern Russia.

“The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, ‘Soviet Union’) was a terrific example of a nation that lived as though God was Absent. The Communist State was explicitly Atheist and strove to eliminate God and Religion from all areas of public life. One wonders if Communism, and its bedmate, Atheism, caused the disaster which ensued. From 1922 to 1991, millions died [100 million by a WSJ report on November 6, 2017 by DAVID SATTER; not even including those who perished in World War II]. The Soviet economy usually underperformed compared to the West, standards of living stagnated, and families wilted. Fertility and birth rates plummeted. In the end, the USSR collapsed under the weight of its own folly. Increasingly, America and many developed nations resemble the USSR and other places ‘Where God is Absent.’”

So do we turn to the America of 2021, to apply these Stern Warnings, to see what we shall find.

THE TEACHING

“O God, You are my God, earnestly will I seek You; my inner self thirsts for You, my flesh longs and is faint for You, in a dry and weary land where no water is. So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory.” – PSALM 63:1-2, AMPC

THESIS. This Scripture describes the Current Spiritual Condition of the American Enterprise, in my studied opinion. As we proceed with the Drill Down, I think you’ll see what I mean, and why.

CONTEXT. This was a plaintive Psalm of David when he was in “The Wilderness of Judah,” an important qualifier for understanding what follows. The Hebrew for “Wilderness” here is, ‘Midbar’ [מִדְבָּר], translated as: “Desert; uninhabited land where things are dried up; an arid place in which is no man (Job 38:26); the abode of jackals (Isaiah 34;13), and wild asses (Jeremiah 22:24); in a desert land, and in a waste howling wilderness.” WEBSTER (1828): “A desert; a tract of land or region uncultivated and uninhabited by human beings, whether a forest or a wide barren plain, that yields no supply.”

I WILL SEEK YOU. David’s first order of business in this Wilderness was to urgently “Seek” God. From the Hebrew, ‘Shachar’ [שָׁחַר]: “Literally, ‘To look early (in the morning) or diligently for; seeking eagerly for their [necessary] food, with great longing; to be up at dawn; implying earnestness; to rise betimes [before the usual time of day]; to search for painstakingly.” WEBSTER (1828): “To go in search or quest of; to look for; to search for by going from place to place. To inquire for; to ask for; to solicit; to endeavor to find or gain by any means. ‘The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God’ (Psalms 104:21).”

‘IN A DRY AND WEARY LAND.’ From several Hebrew terms that, taken together, say this. ‘Tsiyyah’ [צִיָּה], or “Dryness, drought; solitary place; parched, barren, arid.” And ‘Ayeph’ [עָיֵף]: “Faint, weary; famished; languid; beastly.” Where there is comparatively, “no water,” literally or spiritually speaking. That is, no place of necessary refreshment from the glaring sun, howling winds nor suffocating heat. No Oasis, as it were. A ‘Godless’ place of barrenness and absence of fresh fruit.

EVEN IN THE SANCTUARY. The stunning implication here is that ‘God’s Presence, Power and Glory’ are not to be found even in God’s Sacred Houses of Worship! Not even there, 80% of the time, beloved. Not even there. From the Hebrew, ‘Qodesh’ [קֹדֶשׁ], or: “A holy, consecrated place belonging to God; where the sacred oblations take place; the ‘innermost’ part of the sanctuary, where God resides.” WEBSTER (1828): “A sacred place; particularly among the Israelites, the most retired part of the Temple at Jerusalem, called the Holy of Holies, in which was kept the Ark of the Covenant, and into which no person was permitted to enter except the high priest, and that only once a year to intercede for the people.”

AMERICA’ SPIRITUAL WILDERNESS. From this Scriptural Foundation then, I advance my argument that I have constructed for the past three years, with copious documentation, that this is an apt description of Today’s America, 2021:

‘A Land without a true Knowledge of God,’ manifest in our now Timid Sanctuaries, having become a Spiritually Barren Landscape with little real refreshment of weary, embattled and confused and endangered souls, rendering them exhausted and parched for Christ’s Living Water.

Consequently, God is no longer widely Present in America, as He Increasingly Withdraws Himself and His Cover from us. Only a few remain Lit by His Light – ‘The Remnant’ – just enough to graciously provide ‘Night Beacons’ for others to find and to follow to His Shelter.

As Paul wrote of it to the Romans: “The night is far gone and the day is almost here. Let us then drop (fling away) the works and deeds of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.” – ROMANS 13:12, AMPC

It’s time, beloved, past time! But not for much longer, without a wholesale, passionate and quite Public Repentance throughout the land – Beginning in America’s Church, to Reset the High Standard she has lost or thrown away.

AMERICA AND ICHABOD

“And she named the child Ichabod, saying, ‘The glory is departed from Israel!’—because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, ‘The glory is gone from Israel, for the ark of God has been taken.’ – 1 SAMUEL 4:21-22, AMPC

This is perhaps the saddest and most devastating thing the Lord might say concerning any nation, but especially those who once belonged to Him. So let’s take a closer look at the possibility, even the probability, that God’s Glory no longer dwells with America.

THE STORY OF ICHABOD. “The term ‘Ichabod’ is found in two places in the Bible, 1 Samuel 4:21 and 14:3. Ichabod was the son of Phinehas and the grandson of Eli, the priest of the Lord in Shiloh. The sad story of Eli and his two wayward sons, Phinehas and Hophni, is found in 1 Samuel, chapters 2 and 4. Hophni and Phinehas died in battle with the Philistines who captured the Ark of the Covenant and took it away from Israel. Upon hearing this terrible news, Eli fell backward off his chair and broke his neck and died. Phinehas’s pregnant wife went into labor and bore a son.

And she named the child Ichabod, saying, ‘The glory has departed from Israel!’ because the Ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. And she said, ‘The glory has departed from Israel, for the Ark of God has been captured’ (1 Samuel 4:21–22). The word Ichabod means literally ‘Inglorious’ or ‘There is no glory,’ and in her pain and despair, the woman (who is unnamed in Scripture) lamented over the Loss of the Glory of God from Israel.” – EDITORS, ‘Got Questions,’ ret. ARE WE THERE YET, FATHER? I have been writing for over three years and more, about the at first, gradual, then the catastrophic ‘American Dégringolade.’ I borrow the term from British historian PAUL JOHNSON’S landmark book, ‘Modern Times: The World from the World the Twenties to the Eighties,’ published in 1983.

It Means: “A rapid decline or deterioration (as in strength, position, or condition): Precipitous downfall.”

I take no real pleasure in writing these lines; it just is what it is, and I am compelled to write them. Now let’s close in on this Thesis, to see some of THE EVIDENCE for such a severe verdict, just over the last ten years or so.

CHARISMA. “God is calling His people to wake up and shake loose from their apathy and lethargy. He is calling us to hear the ‘Divine Warning’ about the days to come and to prepare, prepare, prepare. We must prepare ourselves for His Coming by trimming our lamps with oil. We must Prepare the Church as an Ark of Refuge for those who are perishing … We need a ‘Fresh Revelation’ of the work of the Cross and the power of the Resurrection in a place of authentic humility—‘Dying to Self.’ One of the highest forms of worship is simple ‘Obedience to God’ … We need courageous voices of ‘Prophetic Clarity’ to resound from the Pulpits of America as well as Righteousness to permeate through the Halls of Politics. We have a renegade judiciary and need a new generation of righteous judges raised up in the land. We need princes, politicians, priests (pastors), prophets and people who love God and others more than they love themselves. From preachers to politicians, from pulpits to political offices, and all in between, we need A ‘Revival of Character!’” – DOUG STRINGER, “Is the Glory of God Departing from US?” August 5, 2012; edited

NEW BIBLE CONCEPTS. “We (Christians) in America have enjoyed the Blessings of God probably more than any society before us. I’m talking about physical blessings here. For the past 80 – 100 years, life has been generally easy. Technology has provided us with many benefits and enjoyments unheard of in times past. Societal Progression has brought a large change in a very short period of time. From the hard life of the western frontiersman to the easy life of today’s corporate executive, the Change is very apparent … ‘Almighty God has blessed, but His Presence has left America.’ At least that is the way I see it. We have been led to believe that we (as a Nation) are too big to fail. We are the Superpower and the World Leader. America can buy or borrow its way out of any problem? Why do we not laugh at those who purport such absurdities? … America Sleeps while their ‘hair’ is being cut. Just as Samson, when we awake, God’s Presence could be gone and our Country and life could be history. COMFORT & COUNSEL. “The Ark being captured by the Philistines was not the reason for the Glory to depart. The Glory had already departed, and this was only an open manifestation of that fact. It is possible that this was evident much earlier to the priests in charge of the Ark. We read in 1Kings 8:9 that when the Ark was placed in the Temple that Solomon had built, there was nothing in the Ark except the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were written. What happened to the pot of Manna and Aaron’s Rod? It was the Glory of God in the Ark that was to keep these two items fresh throughout the generations. The Manna must have bred worms and the Rod must have withered up, as soon as the Glory Departed, and so these would have been quietly thrown away by the priests. But the people of Israel recognised that the Glory had departed only when the Ark was captured. This teaches us that God’s Anointing may depart from us at a particular time, and it may be only much later that this becomes evident to people around us. When Worldliness or Sin becomes manifest in us as individuals or as churches, it is clear to everyone who has some understanding of God’s Ways that ‘God has departed.’” – JACOB NINAN, “When Does the Glory of God Depart?” ret. DK’S TAKE. Beloved friends, for some time now, and most especially during the last four tumultuous, debauched, chaotic and treacherous years, have I entertained the painful possibility that God’s Presence has in fact, nearly, fully Departed from America. I now believe it to be so.

I do, and can draw no other conclusion, for the Reasons I list in the Closing Section that follows.

LAST THOUGHTS

In 1980, of three books that influenced me considerably, JOSH MCDOWELL’S ‘Evidence that Demands a Verdict’ (1972) was significant in grounding my Faith in solid doctrine. But it’s not the content of the book that requires my attention here, but rather, The Title.

One of my passions as a professor of record for the Disenfranchised Christian in America is to help RESTORE CRITICAL THINKING to the Body of Christ, and any who read my Commentaries. That is why they are lengthy, detailed, and replete with References from the Scriptures and relevant literatures, and, hopefully, present of reasoned argument.

That makes me more Polemicist than Apologist.

WHAT WE’RE UP AGAINST. To continue. During my doctoral studies I once took a course from a rogue genius of a scholar named DR. GERALD R. MILLER, for a special seminar in something called, “Counter Attitudinal Advocacy:”

“[A] process where publicly communicating a belief which runs Counter to a belief that the individual holds, can result in the individual changing his or her original belief, in order for it to be in accordance with his or her statement.” – ARONSON, E., WILSON, T. D., & AKERT, R. M., ‘Social Psychology,’ 7th ed., 2010, p 159.

Which means: If I feed you enough of the Opposite of the view you currently hold, it’s possible to ‘Shift’ your view of an issue if presented in an effective and sufficient and repetitive manner.

Adolf Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, is said to have once similarly proposed: “A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.” Selah.

ENTER DR. ROBERT A.J. GAGNON, ‘conservative’ professor of theology at Houston Baptist University, the subject of a piece by the EDITORS of the ‘Capstone Report’ entitled, “Christians Cannot Trust David French,” published on January 13, 2021. Note: Written one week AFTER the January 6 ‘Christian Insurrection’ on the Capitol.

Here is their Opening Statement.

“Leading conservative theology professor Robert A. J. Gagnon said that David French should not be trusted by Christians until French repents for misleading Christian voters. Dr. Gagnon, a professor of theology at Houston Baptist University, highlighted French’s misleading writings about the threat of the Biden-Harris Administration and French’s deranged attacks on Sen. Ted Cruz, a fellow Southern Baptist, and Sen. Josh Hawley [the man who raised a clenched fist to the Trump followers on the way to an attempted coup d’état at the Capitol].

In a lengthy post, Dr. Gagnon said, ‘David French has really lost it. This vitriolic Never-Trumper who has been calling for Trump’s political death for the past four years predictably calls for Trump’s impeachment in the last week of his Presidency; and, worse, wants Cruz and Hawley expelled from the Senate if they won’t recant.’

Dr. Gagnon defended Sen. Cruz and Sen. Hawley. He said, ‘All Cruz and Hawley were trying to do is to get a commission to carefully study the issue and have a vote audit done in the contested states (simply signature verification) where there is likely to be corruption in the face of nonexistent safeguards against election fraud and incredibly high turnout and lopsided voting for Biden. Signature match is not denying anyone their vote but rather preventing the fraudulent invalidation of legitimate votes.’

Dr. Gagnon warned about the threat to American liberty posed by a Biden-Harris Administration—something insanely denied by Never Trump David French. In fact, Dr. Gagnon warns that French is clouded by his continued Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

Selah. Selah.

1,000 TROJAN HORSES. I wanted you all to know that in my assessment, this is the very Heartbeat of the ‘New Christian Right.’ More accurately, make that read, the Trump/QAnon/Alt Right Nationalism that is sweeping across the Nation, and inside the sanctuaries of the Church of America. Because no one of rank will speak!

It is eating us alive, beloved. It is here to stay, and it is, so far, winning. So, what, if anything, can we do to Counter it?

THE SOLUTIONS? After more than a cursory review of conservative and Christian journals and authors, I could find virtually none who: (1) Know what to do; (2) Are willing to speak publicly about what to do; or far worse, (3) Advocate for a return to Trumpism as America’s last real hope, for both Church and State.

Which brought me to a rather engaging little piece by CAITLIN JOHNSTONE, who self-describes as “a rogue journalist, poet and Utopia Prepper,” whose work is found in such diverse places as Apple podcasts, soundcloud, Facebook, Steemit, YouTube, and Spotify. I know, I know.

Sounding very much like the Millennials and Gen X’rs who are fed up with both Political Parties, the Church, and the American Empire, here is what she had to say. And there is a method to my seeming madness, so bear with me.

“The U.S. political/media class have been pushing hard for more Authoritarian policies to stave off the threat of ‘domestic terrorism’ in the wake of the Capitol Riot.

Political internet censorship is becoming increasingly normalized, anti-protest bills are being passed, and now we’re seeing liberals ‘to spy on Trump supporters to report them to the authorities.’ And an amazingly large percentage of the U.S. population seems to have no problem with any of this, even in sectors of the political spectrum that should really know better by now …

So, the option of stopping the Rise of Trumpism by changing the System is taken off the table, which is why you never hear it discussed as a possibility in mainstream circles. The only option people are being offered to debate the pros and cons of is giving more powers to that same corrupt System which created Trump, powers which will be under the control of the next Trumpian Figure who is elevated by that very system.
