THE PROMISE FOR 2022. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work among you will complete it by the day of Christ Jesus.” – PHILIPPIANS 1:6, NASB
- COMPLETE. From the Greek word, ‘Epiteleó’ [ἐπιτελέω], rendered as: “To finish, accomplish, or perfect; to achieve the end-goal; bring to a successful conclusion; having no deficiency; concluded, as an edifice is completed; to fulfill or perform; to effectively execute. ”
- COMMENTARY. “The ground of St. Paul’s confidence in their Perseverance is the belief that it was ‘God’s grace’ which began the good work in them, AND that, ‘not being resisted’ (as was obvious by their enthusiasm for good), He would complete what He had begun. In his view, God’s grace is the beginning and the end; ‘man’s co-operation’ lies in the intermediate process linking both together … As is usual in the Epistles, ‘the Day of the Lord’ is spoken of as if it were near at hand. Paul teaches that there is much to be done, even in the development of Anti-Christian power, before [The Day] does come.” – CHARLES ELLICOTT, ‘Old and New Testament Commentary for English Readers,’ 1878, 1887; edited
DK’S TAKE. In Sum: All God needs, beloved, for the triumphal fulfillment of your destiny and calling in Christ is: (a) That you ‘sincerely ask’ Him to make it happen; and (b) That you ‘refuse to resist’ the Holy Spirit as He does just that. Such historic Resistance is currently THE GREAT DOWNFALL of many we see collapsing today.
- ROMANS 3:12 (AMPC). “All have turned aside; together they have gone wrong and have become unprofitable and worthless; no one does right, not even one!”
- TURNED ASIDE. From the Greek, ‘Ekklinó’ [ἐκκλίνω]: “To deviate; turn away from [God]; to fall away [apostatize]; to shun [ignore or reject]; to decline.”
- UNPROFITABLE. Here the word is, ‘Achreioó [ἀχρειόω], or: “Make useless; spoiled [or polluted]; become corrupt; good for nothing; without utility; turned sour; producing no gain or advantage.”
- CHARLES ELLICOTT. “‘They are together become unprofitable.’—Here the adjective is used to express a state of moral corruption and depravity. ‘Together’ means ‘altogether;’ i.e., ‘the whole mass of mankind, with one consent, has fallen to ruin.’” – ‘Old and New Testament Commentary for English Readers,’ 1878, 1897; edited
THE KEY. You will note, beloved, that the one missing ingredient on this body historically, and the one we see today, is this found in VERSE 18: “There is no [reverential] fear of God before their eyes.”
More happily, however, I am able to conclude this brief Homily, let me read into the record a Scripture and Commentary God gave me to share with you all just yesterday. I find it both realistic and exhilarating.
ISAIAH 9:2. “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great Light; those who dwelt in the land of intense darkness and the shadow of death, upon them has the Light shined.”
Of this, a very wise ALEXANDER MACLAREN wrote: “The darker the cloud, the brighter is the rainbow. This Prophecy has for its historical background the calamitous reign of the weak and wicked Ahaz, during which the heart of the nation was bowed, like a forest before the blast, by the dread of foreign invasion and conquest. The Prophet predicts a day of gloom and anguish, and then, out of the midst of his threatenings, bursts this glorious Vision, sudden as sunrise … The great Prophecy of these verses in its indefiniteness goes far beyond its immediate occasion in the state of Judah under Ahaz. As surely as the dawn floods all lands, so surely shall all who walk in darkness see the great Light; and wherever is a ‘land of the shadow of death,’ there shall the Light shine. It is ‘the Light of the world.’” – ‘Expositions of the Holy Scriptures,’ cf. 1900; edited
CODA. ‘We are that Light,’ beloved, by His appointment and our sustained desire to honor Him in all things. So, if the Lord be willing, my machines stay healthy, and the creeks don’t rise: See you soon! DK
