PART I: HOW WE GOT HERE

FIRST THOUGHTS

Babel. The Time and Place where Mankind had arrived at such skill, both by science and art, that they thought of themselves as gods, and desired therefore to build a Great Tower, signifying their presumptive divinity.

I believe that America has reached its Zenith of similar arrogance and presumption, at the same time its Nadir concerning its moral soundness and humility. Thus my lead in to today’s Teaching on ‘Migdal Bavel,’ [מִגְדַּל בָּבֶל], the legendary Tower of Babel. – cf. Genesis 11:1-9.

THE STORY. “The descendants of Noah were living in the area of Mesopotamia in Babylon. They settled in a land named Shinar. The population was growing and they all spoke one language. The people decided to build a tall, proud symbol of how great they had made their nation. The Babylonians wanted a tower that would ‘reach to the heavens’ so that they could be like God and that they would not need Him. They began to construct a great Ziggurat.

God did not like the pride and arrogance in the hearts of the people. God caused the people to suddenly speak different languages so they could not communicate and work together to build the tower. This caused the people to scatter across the land. The tower was named The Tower of Babel because the word ‘Babel’ means ‘Confusion.’ This story is a powerful reminder of how important it is to obey God’s Word and not think that we can build a successful but godless life on our own!” EDITORS, ‘Bible Study Tools,’ February 11, 2016; edited

THESIS. I propose that the Legacy of Babel is now rife among us here in America, including its Church, and that our accurate Understanding of our Times must begin precisely here.

THE SPIRIT OF BABEL

As I was drawn into this area of study (not my original plan), I discovered a far ranging Commentary which I found riveting. Here is a Synopsis some Core Ideas from ALAN MORRISON, pastor, scholar, church planter and blogger on matters of Biblical Doctrine and History. – cf. ‘MountainRetreat.org,’ “The Spirit of Babel: The New Spirituality in Redemptive History,” 2002; edited

What he writes will drive us toward detailed response to our First Question: “How Did We Get Here.”

More significantly, toward the other Two Questions for the two remaining Discussions: “How Are We Doing Now?” and especially, “Where Are We Heading?” Make that read: Just What is America fast Becoming?

So let’s begin with a Summary of his excellent analysis.

PROLOGUE. “It is right for diligent Christians to Discern the Signs of the Times. However, it is possible to get into an over-pietistic mindset and say, echoing some words of the Lord Jesus, that it is not for us to know times and seasons. So we shy away from using our Discernment antennae. The net result is that we then bury our heads in the sand and cease to take note of what is happening around us.”

THE NEW SPIRITUALITY. “The New Spirituality is not new. What is perceived to be New today in the religious sphere is never new; it is merely something considerably older but dressed up in newer clothes. As Solomon has wisely said, ‘There is nothing new under the sun’…It is not Spiritual in the truest

sense. It is Religious, most certainly. In fact what we are really looking at in all these articles, is the unified thrust of World Religion. That is what we are looking at…[Third], It is inevitable that the New Spirituality will be Political…It is because there’s a total crossover between the New Spirituality and the New World Order. The New World order and the New Age scenario are both inextricably linked together because, for human beings that are unregenerate, their only hope lies in this present world and in bringing about Worldly Change.

TRUE SPIRITUALITY. “Thus, there is True Spirituality which has its roots in the Will of God and is rock-like in its consistency — the everlasting Gospel (Revelation 14:6) which has been the same from the very Beginning — and there is the New Spirituality which is an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of seductive movements, philosophies, religions and worldviews. It is, in fact, the modern pinnacle of the development of World Religion. Now to begin to understand the background of all this properly, we need to go back to the very beginning of the Scriptures.”

ORIGIN OF WORLD RELIGION. “World Religion really begins with The Moment that the Fall of angels took place. That is why we say that what we identify today as the New Spirituality is NOT new. From that Moment in history when the angel whom we now call Satan became filled with Pride — thereby giving birth to its daughter, Rebellion — a Movement came into being…From the time that Adam and Eve turned away from their Creator, a whole new ‘World’ came into being — a World based on sin and on enmity toward God — a World which was under the sway of Satan and his fellow fallen angels or demons — a World System which was set to last throughout all history, until the time that the Lord Jesus Christ Returns at the End of the Present Age.

SATANIC INITIATION. “There are Three Elements in this ‘Satanic Initiation’ in Genesis 3:1-6, which have never changed since that time and which have come to infect the entire human creation. This is what lies behind the development of world religion. (1) ‘The Promise of Personal Divinity’…Here is the promise: ‘You will be like God, knowing good and evil’ (Genesis 3:5)…(2) ‘The Guarantee of Unconditional Eternal Life.’ ‘And the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die’ (Genesis 3:4). This was, of course, a phenomenal Lie. Here Satan reveals his consummate role as a Liar…(3) ‘A Desire for Wisdom which is Above and Beyond that which was Received by Nature’…The Third Part of the ‘Satanic Initiation’ was to persuade our first parents that they could acquire a level of wisdom over and above that with which they had been endowed by their Creator, and that by obeying him, rather than their Creator, they would have access to that wisdom: “When the woman saw that the tree was desirable to make one wise” (Genesis 3:6).

POST FALL INFLUENCES. “‘An Innate Need to Suppress Spiritual Truth.’ First of all, in Romans 1:18, there is mention of the fact that people ‘Suppress the truth in unrighteousness.’ There is an inbuilt innate need for the suppressing of truth in the person. It is important to understand this in relation to spiritual, religious matters. The awesome reality of God the Creator is too much for a human race riddled with actual guilt and unholiness…

[Second], ‘A Profound Love of the Lie.’ [By those] ‘who exchanged the truth of God for the lie,’ (v. 25). What is this monolith known as ’The Lie’? It is what naturally comes about when one suppresses the truth about God the Creator. In a nutshell, the Big Lie is that God is not God…It is also the Lie which will play its own special role in the Final Days of this Present Evil Age (2 Thessalonians 2:11-12)…

A Third Post-Fall Influence on the development of World Religion is: ‘A Willful Refusal to Acknowledge the Transcendence of God the Creator’… ‘Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened’ (Romans 1:21).

Fourth, ‘The Worship of the Creature.’ This is the next step, is it not? This is quite plain from verses 22 and 23 of Romans Chapter 1: ‘Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.’ After the Denial of the Transcendence of God, we slip straight away into Idolatry, the worship of the created thing.

Fifth, ‘A Rejection of Gods Entire Created Order.’ If you look at Romans 1:24 through to the end of that chapter, you will see how once things begin to go wrong in the ‘Conception-of-God’ department, the entire development of the world goes out of kilter and you wind up with a complete Rebellion against the Created Order of God.”

COLLECTIVE OUTWORKINGS. “The First Thing which should be mentioned here is ‘The Inauguration of the “Spirit of Antichrist.’” In John’s first letter, he refers to a denial of Jesus Christ coming in the flesh, a refusal to accept that God has been manifested in the flesh in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 2:22). In other words, he is referring to a 100% rejection of the Incarnation of the Son of God. This is what Scripture refers to as ‘the spirit of antichrist’ (1 John 4:4)…Second, ‘The Outworking of the “Satanic Initiation” in Pre-Diluvian Culture’… Sixteen hundred years ago, Augustine of Hippo wrote a book called ‘The City of God,’ in which he spoke of the Two Cities which had been formed by Two Loves. The Earthly City, formed by the Love of Self and the Contempt of God; and the Heavenly City, formed by Love for God and even the Contempt of Self. These are styled spiritually as ‘Babylon’ (the Mother of Harlots) and ‘The New Jerusalem.’ The first is destined for destruction. The second is to last forever.”

BABEL. “An understanding of this portion of history is vital to our understanding of the ‘New Spirituality.’ At that time, we find that the whole earth had one language and one speech (Genesis 11). Previous Civilisation had been wiped out by The Flood, and Noah’s great-grandchild started a Kingdom which was centred in a part of ancient Mesopotamia known as Shinar. Within this kingdom lay the city which came to be known as Babel…Now it had not taken very long since the time of the flood for the evil heart of humanity to reassert itself. And we find that the Babel of Nimrod’s kingdom was set-up in direct Contravention of God’s earlier Covenant with Noah, which stipulated that all His descendants in the wake of The Flood should be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth (Genesis 9:1 & 7).

THE FRUIT OF BABEL. Morrison then takes us to his sweeping Conclusions by tracing the Great Ideas Opposed to God from these early, pre-historic Origins. “Gnosticism. Mysticism. Rosicrucianism. Freemasonry. The Enlightenment [with Dr. Schaeffer, I used to call it, ‘The Endarkenment’]. Evolution Theory. Theological Liberalism. Comparative Religion. The Mind Sciences. The Theosophical Society. Interfaithism [i.e., Ecumenism].” And I add: Marxism, Freudianism, Fascism, Deconstructionism, and their respective Offspring.

EPILOGUE. “It is here that we must close this first article of our examination of the ‘New Spirituality,’ as we try to Discern the Signs of the Times…There has been an enormous Quickening, leading to a Global Movement which is highly aggressive, which professes Universal Tolerance but which is highly IN-tolerant of True Christianity. It is well organised and it is following a very identifiable Agenda. This is not conspiracy theory, but conspiracy fact.

THE POWER OF IDEAS. The reason that the Apostle Paul spent so much time and aggressive effort to ‘Preserve Sound Doctrine,’ beloved, is because Satan wages his War Against Truth through the agency of Grand Ideas. This is why I spend so much time on the consequently existential matter of ‘The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, so help us God.’ And the entire notion of Worldview. – cf. Proverbs 23:7a

Grasp this, and you grasp so very much indeed, beloved.

ROOTS OF AMERICAN ORDER

A notable work that continues to influence my thinking is the landmark book by RUSSELL KIRK, ‘Roots of American Order,’ published in 1974. Known by many as the Father of American Conservatism, Kirk set forth several Philosophical Roots of American Stability that are nicely Summarized in the following essay by LEE EDWARDS.

Edwards, at the time of writing his article was a Distinguished Fellow in Conservative Thought at the Heritage Foundation, and author of a short biography of William F. Buckley, Jr. Here is his excellent Précis of that important Idea. – cf. ‘The Kirk Center,’ “The Many Roots of American Order,” March 2, 2009; edited

THE AMERICAN MIRACLE. “Nearly four decades ago, Catherine Bowen wrote a delightful little book about the Constitutional Convention of 1787 entitled ‘Miracle at Philadelphia.’ The “Miracle” was that a diverse group of strong-willed, political leaders could, within a few months, produce a Document that has served as the Foundation for the most successful and enduring experiment in democracy in human history.”

THE QUESTION. “What is the source of America’s strength and endurance? Its abundant, natural resources? Its educated, highly skilled people? Its fortuitous geographical location midway between Europe and Asia? Its national will? Whence comes our limited government, individual freedom, free market system, and fundamental values?”

THE ANSWER. “In ‘The Roots of American Order,’ first published in 1974, Russell Kirk provides a convincing answer: America is not only the land of the free and the home of the brave but a place of Ordered Liberty, which made its freedom and prosperity possible. Using the device of examining five cities—Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia—Kirk traces the ‘Roots of American Order’ to long-standing Traditions in human history.”

THE ROOTS. “First came the Hebrews, who recognized ‘a purposeful moral existence under God.’ For the Prophets, the hill-town of Jerusalem was the Eternal City for salvation. Next came the Greeks who strengthened the roots with their philosophical and political self-awareness. Athens was where Western philosophy was born, and from it came the Western views of science and the conviction that all areas of knowledge are within the ability of the mind of men. There followed the Romans, with their emphasis on law and social awareness. Rome was the seat of a great empire, and its political administration and stability echoed down the centuries. The Roots of these cities were intertwined ‘with the Christian Understanding of human duties and human hopes’ and were joined by Medieval custom, learning, and valor.”

THE SECRET. “The Roots of Order were then enriched by Two great Political Experiments in law and liberty centered in London and Philadelphia. But they did not come to pass overnight. Indeed, the British contribution was made possible by six-and-a-half centuries of political experimentation from the Magna Carta in 1215 through the Glorious Revolution of 1689. The first part of the British experiment took place during what are so often called, erroneously, the Dark Ages. In ‘The Roots of American Order,’ Kirk lists the contributions of the Middle Ages: Our system of Common [Christian] Law, the essentials of representative government, our language, our social patterns, and the foundation of our modern economy.”

AMERICAN VALUES. “Out of the Protestant Ethic, Kirk says, came self-reliance, self-examination, endeavor in the secular world, and democracy. England, thanks to Richard Hooker and others, found a middle path between warring factions on the continent and passed it on to America: It consisted of law, liberty, and tolerance. But the passage was not an easy or swift one, in part because of the conflicting ideas of philosophers like Hobbes and Locke.”

THE AMERICAN IDEA. “The last Englishman that Kirk mentions, and with obvious affection, is the Anglo-Irish statesman, Edmund Burke. Burke, he says, went far beyond John Locke’s Utilitarian Social Contract to talk of an Eternal Contract between the dead, the living, and the unborn. Burke argued that we all participate in this spiritual and social partnership because it is Ordained of God. Before leaving London and traveling to Philadelphia, Kirk underscores the importance of the Bill of Rights drawn up in 1689 and the fruition of English constitutional development during the preceding four centuries. Much of the language of the English Bill of Rights appears in the first Ten Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.”

FOUNDING DOCUMENTS. “The author then takes up the first of America’s Founding Documents—the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was a revolutionary document, Kirk says, a bill of particulars for going to war against George III, but it was not an open-ended justification of Revolution under any and all circumstances. It was, in fact, primarily a political document, meant to set forth grievances against the King and the justifications for the political separation of the colonies. Among its 27 specific Complaints, not one touched on social and economic conditions. The Declaration was a conservative document in that it spoke of changing the ‘Government’ but not the ‘State.’ As Kirk points out, ‘Government’ implied the ministers and other temporary possessors of political power while ‘Society” meant the establishment civil social order. Still, the Declaration was a radical document in the sense that it reasserted a Political Autonomy rooted in the North American continent ever since the landings at Jamestown and Plymouth.”

THE CONSTITUTION. “Eleven years later and now citizens of a new nation, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia met to revise the Articles of Confederation. They wound up producing a whole new Constitution. It was a practical document, says Kirk, attempting to resolve the conflicting demands of freedom and order. Its composition demanded balance, firmness, and yet a willingness to yield because the delegates had to (a) Uphold order but not reduce true liberty, (b) Produce a reasonably strong national government while not reducing the states to mere provinces; and (c) Provide for an effective chief executive who could not, however, become a king or dictator.”

AMERICA AT THE END OF THE 20^TH CENTURY. “‘Whatever the failings of America in the eighth decade of the twentieth century,’ Russell Kirk wrote thirty years ago in The Roots of American Order, ‘the American Order has been a conspicuous success in the perspective of human history.’ As he summed up: ‘Under God, a large measure of justice has been achieved; the state is strong and energetic; personal freedom is protected by laws and customs; and a sense of community ensures.’”

THE TRANSFER. As I have argued for some time now, there has occurred in that largely Stable American Order A BREACH (recall Erich Sauer here), or more accurately, a Sequence of Breaches, that have occurred over the past 120 years or so – since the Year 1900.

And most acutely and destructively, during just the past Three and a Half Years – 1,335 Days. Let’s take a closer look at what I mean.

ROOTS OF AMERICAN DISORDER

Now we consider what has happened to that Elegant, largely Judeo-Christian Framework that has torn so much of it to tatters in recent years. The Idea here is, one cannot Solve a Problem without first, Diagnosing the Problem.

Somewhat surprisingly, perhaps, I turn to a Catholic scholar in a piece titled, “The Natural Law Theory of the Founders and the Roots of American Disorder,” Essay II, May 24, 2019. His pen name is ABRENUNTIO, which roughly translates as “Renunciation.”

Here is what he most vigorously ‘Renounces,’ as must the American Church and the State – but have clearly not.

“The primary intersection will be the Renunciation of much of the contemporary zeitgeist of our Post-modern world – its non-teleological morality, its banal anti-culture, socio-economic determinism, revulsion of religious and metaphysical truth, and – perhaps above all – its blindered conception of how things might be different.”

FOUR ROOTS OF DISORDER. He then launches into a rather sophisticated analysis of The American Decline based on Four Factors, or “Roots,” that run directly Counter to those discussed so lovingly and eloquently by Mr. Kirk.

POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY & THE FLATTENING OF POLITICAL SPACE. “In the American Founding, there is a fundamental tension between an expressed desire to avoid the Tyranny of arbitrary authority and a general recognition that neither the People at large, considered as a mostly uneducated mass, nor the Constitution’s provisions, as an abstract formalization, provided surety against such an outcome.”

THE UNITARY SOCIETY VS. THE SOVEREIGN STATE. “In this respect, the ‘Post-reformation’ provenance of the theories of American popular sovereignty becomes clear; with power and authority to be bestowed upon the Government, there is an attempt to escape the creation of a Hobbesian Leviathan state while yet avoiding the anarchical divisions of the state of nature.”

AGAINST THE CHRISTOLOGICAL REDEFINITION OF POWER. “This fundamentally modern assumption of Authority and Power alike resting in the State renews the ancient problem of power that had been resolved in the Medieval system Christologically. In the older conception, the spiritual power of the Church was not a rival to the power of the Civil Authority, but rather its source of legitimacy and, in theory, if not always in practice, an abiding Constraint on its behavior. Here the Church stood as a permanent institution capable of maintaining a credible distance beyond the Political Order, and in such a position was able to act as the Guardian of an eternal, universal moral and theological orthodoxy.”

A PRIVATIZED, CONTRACTUAL POLITY. “By understanding this Fundamental Movement away from the community of practice in which the traditional Natural Law Doctrine was rooted, we can see that the Founders’ desire to Preserve the moral orthodoxy of the status quo ante was dependent on a particular social configuration that would in time be challenged by the explicitly contractual Sovereign Government they had formed, and the increasingly Market-based Society it consciously nurtured…This earlier conception represented an appeal to an objective Standard of Justice, and one that stands in tension with‘…the New Protestant Theology and Jurisprudence, which emphasized individual and subjective determinations.”

IN SUM. “And in the contemporary American political landscape, it is the notion of Freedom and Liberty that perhaps reigns supreme above all, and which almost undoubtedly stands as the Fundamental American Idea… And [w]hen the Concept of ‘Chosenness’ [i.e., American Exceptionalism] becomes unmediated by the Church and unmoored from the Biblical Narrative, the Danger is that the Nation will not only be a substitute church but a substitute God…Our Freedom itself becomes an Idol.”

Selah, Selah, beloved.

Ponder and consider this inevitable Reality, down to, indeed, its very Roots of Departure from “The Biblical Narrative” over the last Century. The Consequence: The State as Final Authority, rather than the Church, or the God of the Church. Thereby ‘Nationalism’ becomes the New Definition of ‘Power,’ more akin to Nietzsche than to Jesus Christ.

LAST THOUGHTS

Now then, a Closing Illustration of a Core Proposition of mine, restated here. On the Surface, we are all engaged in a War of Ideas, per the brilliant arguments of RICHARD WEAVER in his epic work, ‘Ideas Have Consequences’ (1949). Further, ‘Big Ideas’ have enormous Consequences.

Second, underneath this historic ‘Clash of Civilizations’ and their fundamental Worldviews (Idea Systems), is a Spiritual War that is the Baseline Reality of all we engage on a day to day basis. At its Core are the Universal Conceptions of what is Good and what is Evil, what is Right and what is Wrong, and more to its Nexus:

What is True, and what is False.

FIGHTING ON BOTH FRONTS. This is precisely why the Scriptures address this very Dualism in the following, authoritative and power-filled passages.

“See to it that no one carries you off as spoil or makes you yourselves captive by his so-called philosophy and intellectualism and vain deceit (idle fancies and plain nonsense), following human tradition (men’s ideas of the material rather than the spiritual world), just crude notions following the rudimentary and elemental teachings of the universe and disregarding [the teachings of] Christ (the Messiah)…

[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)…

For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.” – COLOSSIANS 2:8; 1 CORINTHIANS 10:5; EPHESIANS 6:11; AMPC

CODA. So as we prepare for the next Installment – ‘How Americans Are Doing’ today, let us bring all this lofty discourse down to the level of a commonly understood folk-saying that bears a great deal of Spiritual and Political Wisdom.

“But he saw too that in America the Struggle was befogged by the fact that the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word ‘Fascism’ and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty.” – SINCLAIR LEWIS, ‘It Can’t Happen Here,’ 1935

Modern Translation: “When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the Flag and carrying a Cross.”

TWO CITIES. The formidable AURELIUS AUGUSTINE of Hippo wrote his theological masterpiece of Man’s Great Struggle in ‘The City of God’ (De Civitate Dei, c. 420 AD), in which God’s City of the Elect was forever pitted against The City of Man of the Damned, for Dominance. And that the Outcome is to some degree decided by each Generation for that Time, until the End of Time.

Consider this last Idea very carefully, beloved, as we continue our exploration of what I tragically view as ‘The American Amateur Hour,’ and where it is very rapidly now taking us – if we do not Change Course. And very soon.

Which reminds of a pertinent Scripture in that regard, keeping in close mind again, Erich Sauer’s epochal Breach.

“And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of [buildings that have laid waste for] many generations; and you shall be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.” – ISAIAH 58:12, AMPC

But only if we truly, deeply and sincerely want it, beloved. Only then. Otherwise: The Judgment. And as always, Time is fast running out.
