RADICAL. “Radical was first an adjective, borrowed in the 14th century from the Late Latin ‘radicalis,’ itself from Latin ‘radix,’ meaning ‘AT ROOT.’ And the earliest uses of radical are indeed all about literal roots, hinging on the meaning of, relating to, or proceeding from a root. Thus: Pertaining to the root or origin; original; fundamental; implanted by nature; native; constitutional; primitive; original; underived; uncompounded; serving to origination.”

FIRST THOUGHTS

In August of 1972, I earned a doctorate degree in Philosophy, with emphasis upon communication and social theory. Please don’t misunderstand, this is not a boast, except on a loving God. If you knew the details, you’d know why it was nothing short of a miracle that I completed the entire degree program in just two years.

No, it’s because of our subject matter for today: “Philosophy” (and “empty deception”), for they are nearly one and the same, if not managed, overseen and fully submitted to ‘Sola Scriptura,’ the matchless, infallible Word of Almighty God.

So, let’s take a closer look before proceeding further.

PHILOSOPHY. From the Greek, ‘Philosophia’ [φιλοσοφία], meaning: “The love or pursuit of wisdom (or sophistry, ‘fallacious reasoning; reasoning sound in appearance only’); traditional Jewish theology; secular theory; loving one’s own [human] wisdom; the pursuit of truth apart from the revelation of God’s Word.”

EMPTY DECEPTION. Derived from the key Greek term: ‘Apaté’ [ἀπάτη]: “Deceit, deception, delusion [chimera]; a false impression, made to deceive or cheat – i.e., motivated by guile and treachery (trickery, fraud); excited by deceitful influences seducing to sin; ‘pseudo-intellectual babble;’ originally intended as love feasts transformed by base men into seductive revels; to delude [as in ‘Old Deluder,’ 1647].”

THESIS. As one who has been trained in these Secular Philosophies of Men for over 50 years now, I can speak with some authority to the following Proposition:

The American Church has, in those same 50 years, REPLACED the orthodox, canonical Gospel of Jesus Christ with an Imposter, a ‘False Gospel,’ fashioned more by American Culture than by God.

This Doctrinal Sedition is addressed very severely by the Apostle Paul:

“For [you seem readily to endure it] if a man comes and preaches another Jesus than the One we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the [Spirit] you [once] received or a different gospel from the one you [then] received and welcomed; you tolerate [all that] well enough!…But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to and different from that which we preached to you, let him be accursed (anathema, devoted to destruction, doomed to eternal punishment)!” – 2 CORINTHIANS 11:4, GALATIANS 1:8, AMPC

TRUTH! Are you hearing this, Pastors and Teachers of God’s Word? Do you understand the Severity of what Jesus Christ, through Paul, is saying to you all? Are you teaching ‘The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, so help you God?’ Be absolutely sure, before God, that you are not offering an ‘American Gospel,’ that we shall define and delineate for the rest of our study.

120 YEARS OF DEPARTURE

Borrowing from several reliable sources, I shall trace the Roots of this False Gospel to SIX MILESTONES since the Turn of the 20^th Century – 1900 to 2020 – that had profound impact on the Departure from Orthodoxy in America, to increasing Apostasy in that 120 Year Period.

THE TEMPLATE. “Then the Lord said, ‘My Spirit shall not strive and remain with man forever, because he is indeed flesh [sinful, corrupt, given over to sensual appetites]; nevertheless his days shall yet be a hundred and twenty years.’” – GENESIS 6:3, AMP

1900-1920. APRIL 13, 1906: Black evangelist William J. Seymour begins a series of Revival Meetings in Los Angeles leading to the founding and development of American Pentecostalism. APRIL 18, 1906: The San Francisco Earthquake struck at 5:12 am with an estimated magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme). MAY 7, 1915: The sinking of the British ocean liner Lusitania by a German submarine killing 128 American brings the United States into First World War, leaving Isolationism behind and becoming Global Superpower and establishment of League of Nations.

1921-1940. JULY 10, 1925: The infamous “Monkey Trial” ended and John Scopes was found guilty of teaching Darwinism, the same year President Calving Coolidge declared: “The chief business of the American people is business.” Noted for “The Roaring 20s,” and “The Jazz Age,” instituting comparatively radical new forms of the American lifestyle and music. OCTOBER 28-29, 1929: The devastating Wall Street Crash as the New York Stock Exchange completely collapsed based on excessive speculation by the Federal Reserve; signaled the beginning of America’s Great Depression. Resulted in an unemployment rate of 24.9% by 1933. MARCH 20, 1933: The first Nazi Concentration Camp was opened at Dachau, Bavaria, where some 188,000 Jews and other “undesirables” would be slaughtered.

1941-1960. DECEMBER 7, 1941: America enters World War II on the side of the Allies, bringing the United States out of a second leaning toward Isolationism. APRIL 9, 1945: Dietrich Bonhoeffer hung naked by piano wire by the Nazis at Flossenbürg Concentration Camp. AUGUST 6 & 9, 1945: President Harry S. Truman authorizes dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing over 200,000 mostly civilians, effectively ending the Second World War, and solidified America as the undisputed number one Global Superpower that would impact world economics, politics and spirituality for decades to come. MAY 14, 1948: Israel was formally established as an independent State, attacked that same day by all surrounding Arab states with Israelis prevailing. SEPTEMBER 30, 1951: Billy Graham’s “Hour of Decision” first aired on ABC. JUNE 19, 1956: Jerry Falwell founded Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. DECEMBER 9, 1958: The John Birch Society was founded. MARCH 3, 1959: The Unitarian-Universalist Church became an official religious denomination. DECEMBER 8, 1960: Madalyn Murray O’Hair filed suit in Baltimore to force the end of Bible readings and recitations of the Lord’s Prayer in public schools.

1961-1980. OCTOBER 1, 1961: Pat Robertson began broadcasting for the Christian Broadcast Network from Plymouth, Virginia. JUNE 25, 1962: Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962), was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer and encourage its recitation in public schools. NOVEMBER 22, 1963: President John F. Kennedy assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. JANUARY 30, 1968: Tet Offensive in Vietnam giving the Americans a technical victory, but the Vietnamese and Vietcong won the propaganda war. APRIL 4, 1968, Reverend Martin Luther King shot by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee. JUNE 5, 1968: Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California. JANUARY 22, 1973: Roe v. Wade effectively legalized abortion for any reason, arguing that the Constitution protects “a right to privacy,” giving a woman to kill her preborn child. AUGUST 9, 1974: President Richard Nixon resigns in the wake of a special investigation of the Watergate Hotel break in at the Democratic National Headquarters on June 17, 1972. SEPTEMBER 17, 1978: The Camp David Accords signed by Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister, Menahem Begin.

1981-2000. JANUARY 22, 1980: Jerry Falwell attended a breakfast at the White House prayer event with President Jimmy Carter, marking the beginning of the Evangelical Church liaison with American politics. OCTOBER 6, 1981: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat assassinated by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad in Cairo. JANUARY 20, 1981: Ronald Wilson Reagan assumes the presidency of the United States (some argue that the Washington for Jesus Rally on April 29-30 may have influenced his election). MARCH 19, 1987: Television evangelist Jim Bakker resigned from his PTL Ministry after the revelation of a 1980 consensual sexual affair with a church secretary, Jessica Hahn. APRIL 8, 1988: Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart was defrocked by the Assemblies of God after it was revealed that he was involved with a prostitute. AUGUST 31, 1989: Jerry Falwell officially dissolves his Moral Majority. JANUARY 20, 1992: William Jefferson Clinton elected president, followed by a stronger economy and the Monica Lewinsky Affair in 1994, over which he was Impeached by not indicted. SEPTEMBER 27, 1996: The Taliban seize control of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and hanged the president, Najibullah. NOVEMBER 7, 2000: Judge Roy Moore was elected Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

2001-2020. JANUARY 20. 2001: George W. Bush, an avowed Christian whose testimony of life change was made known, assumes the presidency. SEPTEMBER 11, 2001: In the United States, four airliners were hijacked by Wahabi Muslim terrorists from Al Quaeda and intentionally crashed into the Twin Towers in NYC, the Pentagon, and a third in Pennsylvania, resulting in 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries and $10 billion in infrastructure damage. MAY 9, 2003: The National Associations of Evangelicals condemned Franklin Graham, Jerry Falwell, Jerry Vines, Pat Robertson and other Evangelical leaders for their anti-Islamic statements. FEBRUARY 17, 2004: Catholic children advance 11,000 allegations of sexual child abuse by 4,450 Catholic priests. JANUARY 20, 2009: Barack Hussein assumes the American presidency, the first Black man to ever be elected to that office. JUNE 26, 2015: Supreme Court in Obergefell v. Hodges approves same-sex marriages for all American states. JANUARY 20, 2017: DONALD JOHN TRUMP assumes the presidency of the United States of America, on two policy appeals – Nationalism and Anti-Immigration.

JANUARY 6, 2021. I continue to argue that this was AMERICA’S BREAKPOINT insofar as Almighty God was concerned. It clearly signaled that the Nation had gone one step too far in her Betrayal against His Laws and Statutes and 120 Years of calling for Repentance.

I quote the following excellent and copiously DOCUMENTED SUMMARY of the Event by Wikipedia at some length, to give this Landmark Insurrection largely sponsored and in part planned by Evangelical, pro-Trump Christians. Selah.

“The storming of the United States Capitol was a riot and violent attack against the 117th United States Congress at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Part of the 2020–21 U.S. election protests, it was carried out by a mob of supporters of Donald Trump, the 45th U.S. president, in a failed attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. The Capitol was placed under lockdown while lawmakers were evacuated. Five people died and more than 140 were injured.

Called to action by Trump, thousands of his supporters had gathered in Washington, D.C., on January 5 and 6 in support of his false claims that the 2020 election had been ‘stolen’ from him, and to demand that Vice President Mike Pence and Congress reject Joe Biden‘s victory. On the morning of January 6, at a ‘Save America’ rally on the Ellipse, Trump repeated false claims of election irregularitiesand said, ‘if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore’. At his encouragement, thousands of protesters then walked to the Capitol, where a joint session of Congress was beginning the Electoral College vote count to formalize Biden’s victory.

Many in the crowd at the Capitol breached police perimeters and stormed the building, occupying, vandalizing, and looting for several hours, assaulting Capitol Police officers and reporters, erecting a gallows on the Capitol grounds, and attempting to locate lawmakers to take hostage and harm. They chanted “Hang Mike Pence”, blaming him for not rejecting the Electoral College votes, although he lacked the constitutional authority to do so. The rioters targeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–CA), vandalizing and looting her offices, as well as those of other members of Congress.

Upon security being breached, Capitol Police evacuated the Senate and House of Representatives chambers. Several buildings in the Capitol complex were evacuated, and all were locked down. Rioters occupied and ransacked the empty Senate chamber while federal law enforcement officers drew handguns to defend the evacuated House floor. Pipe bombs were found at the offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee, and Molotov cocktails were discovered in a vehicle near the Capitol.

Trump resisted sending the D.C. National Guard to quell the mob. In a Twitter video, he called the rioters ‘very special and told them to ‘go home in peace’ while repeating his false election claims. The Capitol was cleared of rioters by mid-evening, and the counting of the electoral votes resumed and was completed in the early morning hours of January 7. Pence declared President-elect Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris victors, and affirmed that they would assume office on January 20. Pressured by his administration, the threat of removal, and numerous resignations, Trump later committed to an orderly transition of power in a televised statement.” – Updated February 23, 2021; edited

STATE OF THE UNION. According to many recent reports: 50% of all Republicans want Trump to run again for the presidency in 2024, saying ‘It’s his for the asking.’ 78-82% of American Christians still support him, and would likely vote for him should he run again.

By every single February News Report that I reviewed – over a dozen – all declared Trump will run – and likely win back – the Presidency in 2024. Why? Because the Senate Impeachment Trial acquitted him, leaving that door wide open.

THE TEACHING

SCRIPTURE. “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the elementary principles of this world, rather than following [the truth—the teachings of] Christ.” – COLOSSIANS 2:8, AMPC

There are TWO KEY TERMS not yet examined from this powerful Letter from Paul to the Colossian Church, that will speak volumes about today’s American Church Crisis.

TRADITIONS OF MEN. This important word, used in the distinct negative here, is from the Greek, ‘Paradosis’ [παράδοσις]: “A handing down or over [from one generation to another] of an ordinance, law or precept; the transmission of some important concept or practice; the surrendering or yielding of something important to another.” DK: For Judaism, the ‘Talmud’ (Tradition) vs. ‘Torah’ (God’s Word); for Islam, the ‘Hadith’ (Tradition) vs. Qu’ran’ (the word of Allah); for Christianity, ‘Apocrypha’ or Commentaries (Tradition) vs. ‘Holy Bible’ (Word of God). The Issue: AUTHORITY!

PRINCIPLES OF THE WORLD. Similarly, taken from the Greek word, ‘Stoicheion’ [στοιχεῖον]: “The basic elements of knowledge or matter; a rudiment, an element, a rudimentary principle, an elementary rule governing the conduct (or the origins) of something; the phase, ‘First Principles’ or presuppositions are often used in this regard; in Galatians, Paul called them ‘weak and poor’ of and by themselves [worldly as opposed to Divine]; the rudiments with which Man is indoctrinated [or ‘socialized’ in modern vernacular]; most often refer to philosophy (explanatory frameworks created for the understanding of reality).” – DK: From ‘the World’ (‘Kosmos’ [κόσμος]), or “Worldly affairs and practices, by which we become adorned or decorated, appearing just like it.”

THE COMMENTARIES. Now let’s put all this together to see what the Sages have to say about its core meaning, and relevance to Our Times.

ALBERT BARNES. “‘Beware lest any man spoil you’ – The word ‘Spoil’ now commonly means, to corrupt, to cause to decay and perish, as fruit is spoiled by keeping too long, or paper by wetting, or hay by a long rain, or crops by mildew. But the Greek word used here means to spoil in the sense of plunder, rob, as when plunder is taken in war. The meaning is, ‘Take heed lest anyone plunder or rob you of your faith and hope by philosophy.’ These false teachers would strip them of their faith and hope, as an invading army would rob a country of all that was valuable.” DK: Through the Agencies of philosophy, empty deceit, the Traditions of men and/or the elementary principles of the world’s view of reality, we become first Corrupt and then fully Apostate. – ‘Notes on the Whole Bible,’ 1875; edited

WILLIAM MACDONALD. “False Teachings seek to rob men of what is worthwhile, but offer nothing substantial in its place. ‘Philosophy’ means literally ‘the love of wisdom.’ It is not evil in itself, but becomes evil when men seek wisdom apart from the Lord…It is evil because it exalts human reason above God and worships the creature more than the Creator…’Empty deceit’ refers to the false and valueless teachings of those who profess to offer secret truths to an inner circle of people. There is really nothing to it. But it gathers a following by catering to man’s curiosity. Also it appeals to their vanity by making them members to ‘the select few.’” DK: One cannot avoid the direct implication to America’s modern day Gnostic Heresy found in QAnon. Now that we have the Historical Background and the Scriptural Warning underneath us, let’s being to finish be actually Defining this distinctly ‘Americanized’ Version of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What we are about to see isn’t pretty, nor does it bode well for America’s Return to true greatness.

Importantly, most American Pastors will not or cannot see these elements in their preaching.

TENETS OF ‘THE AMERICAN GOSPEL.’

Many of us have witnessed with horror, frankly, the American Church’s crass and historic Turn to Material Gain (i.e., political and economic power), and away from Christian Orthodoxy during the Trump Years especially.

A biting Commentary to this is penned by a rather brilliant Anglican Bishop named, MWITA AKIRI, in a scholarly piece entitled, “The Prosperity Gospel: Its Concise Theology, Challenges and Opportunities.’ His ideas were originally presented at the Gafcon Jerusalem Conference in 2018, and published by their online journal on January 25, 2019. They are a conservative worldwide Anglican Communion that takes the High View of Scripture (inerrant, infallible).

For those of us coming from the Pentecostal and Charismatic Movements in America, we are about to take some major hits, so buckle up. I believe they are largely justified since those two ‘Traditions’ tend to suppress the importance of Sound Doctrine in favor of Personal Experience.

INTRODUCTION. “The Pentecostal movements that began in the 19th century have evolved over time into various strands that we encounter in global Christianity in the 21st century. One of these strands is the prosperity gospel. This paper explores the concise theology of the Prosperity Gospel, the challenges and opportunities it brings to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ as understood and practiced by most mainline churches worldwide [sic].”

EARLY ORIGINS. “The Prosperity Gospel can be traced as far back as the late Nineteenth Century in the United States. At this early stage, the focus was on the belief in the power of the Individual’s Mind to unlock God’s blessings through correct thinking and speech. This teaching found a catalyst in some of the assumptions of Christian Science, for example, the claim that Reality is purely spiritual and the material world is an illusion, and furthermore, that disease is a mental error that can be corrected not necessarily through medicine but through prayer.”

THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT. “The first important stage in the history of the Prosperity Gospel was what was known as the New Thought Movement. The New Thought movement emerged in the 1880s and centered its basic teaching on THREE THINGS. First, High Anthropology, which is to say that if elevated to the maximum, the human potential could achieve salvation even without a person connecting with God. Second, the movement centered its teaching on the Power of Positive Thinking in which the material world is not a reality but mere thought that exists only in the mind. Third, believers have a share in God’s Creationist Power meaning that they can acquire the same power that God used to create the world and can use it to attain all that God promised through the atonement. E. WILLIAM KENYON (a Baptist minister, 1867–1948) is credited with the popularisation of the New Thought Movement.”

THE FAITH MOVEMENT. “What began as a New Thought Movement developed into the second stage, namely the Faith Movement, variably known as ‘Word of Faith Movement’ or the ‘Positive Confession.’ This development became more evident from the post-World War II revivals (1940s and 1950s) onwards but reached its maturity in the late 1970s. According to The Faith Movement, ‘Faith’ is a spiritual law. This law is capable of binding God’s Word into legal guarantees and can be demonstrated and measured by Health and Wealth.”

HEALTH. “Good Health is the ‘Barometer’ of your faith and demonstrates the power of your faith. However, you can only acquire God’s healing power if you activate your faith and follow the spiritual law. The Prosperity Theology teaches that Christ’s atoning death does not release believers from spiritual sin only. It frees them from physical disease as well (cf. Isaiah 53:5). You maintain this freedom through intense prayer, regular fasting and positive thinking which means one believes that the healing has taken place. If someone is prayed for but does not get healed, then it is their fault [e.g., KENNETH COPELAND, 1980] because they lack faith or they have some form of God’s Judgement due to sin or sins they have committed but not confessed.”

WEALTH. “Rightly so, Wealth is regarded as blessing from God the Provider (Jehovah Jireh). The Prosperity Gospel teaches that the invisible faith should lead to tangible financial rewards. The Prosperity Gospel would go further and claim that the size of your wallet tells the size of your faith. Most Prosperity Gospel preachers would argue that Prosperity is governed by a spiritual law of Positive Confession. Here is the basic premise of Positive Confession as far as the Bible is concerned. The Bible has promised the believers Prosperity, so the believers should ‘speak in faith’ about that promise. Indeed, the Bible is a Faith Contract between God and the believer. In this contract, the believers must fulfill their part of the contract. If they do this then they will receive God’s promises of financial security especially if they make the financial miracles an everyday prospect, and invoke the name of Jesus which unlocks God’s material blessings. Whoever does this becomes the beneficiary of the legal benefits (including the rights and privileges) that the Substitutionary Atonement of Jesus secures (cf. Mark 16:17-18, Malachi 3:10 and Matthew 25:14-30).”

GEKKO’S AMERICA. We can now more easily understand the historic, symmetrical Evolution of The Prosperity Gospel with its evil twin, ‘The American Dream’ (‘rags to riches’) Mythos. And, we can more fully grasp why and how our very own, ‘Gordon Gekko’ (‘Wallstreet,’ 1987) in the person of DONALD TRUMP, rose to such power in 2016 – and may well yet again in 2024.

And why January 6, 2021 became insidiously possible, after some 120 Years of germination in the soil of the American Soul: The Church.

LAST THOUGHTS

120 YEARS. This the very same length of time given to Noah’s Generation (Genesis 6:3) for its own many Insurrections. How appropriate, don’t you think? Let me help remind us of why.

“And [just] as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the time of the Son of Man. [People] ate, they drank, they married, they were given in marriage, right up to the day when Noah went into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all

So also [it was the same] as it was in the days of Lot. [People] ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; But on the [very] day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed [them] all.

That is the way it will be on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.” – LUKE 17:26-30, AMPC

THE GREAT AMERICAN SEDITION. I try hard not to use terms carelessly, since they are all fashioned for us by our Maker. To this two careful point.:

SEDITION. “[Latin ‘Seditio.’ The sense of this word is the contrary of that which is naturally deducible from ‘sedo,’ or ‘sedeo,’ denoting a Rising or Raging, rather than an appeasing. But to set is really to throw down, to drive, and Sedition’ may be a setting or rushing together.] A factious commotion of the people, a tumultuous assembly of men rising in Opposition to Law or the administration of Justice, and in disturbance of the public peace. Sedition is a rising or commotion of less extent than an Insurrection, and both are less than Rebellion; but some kinds of Sedition in Great Britain, amount to High Treason. In general, Sedition is a local or limited Insurrection in Opposition to Civil Authority, as Mutiny is to Military [cf. APOSTASY. “The term ‘Apostasy’ as we use it today comes from the Greek word ‘Apostasia’ [ἀποστασία] which means departure, defection, revolt or rebellion. In terms of Religion, Apostasy is the abandonment of, or a ‘willful falling away from,’ the Faith. It can be defined as the departure of religious practices, a rejection of beliefs once agreed upon, or even mockery of the Religion…In Christianity, Apostasy is the rejection of the Faith by someone who formerly was a Christian. It is a Conscious Abandonment of faith in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. B.J. THE HISTORIC POINT. One cannot miss the unmistakable LINK between False Doctrine and all-out Rebellion and Apostasy from the Church to the Political Square. They are Joined at the Hip, and go far to explain the Founders and Framer’s fervent belief:

WHICH GOD? So what does Jesus Christ have to say about all this American Gospel Heresy, do you think?

THE CANONICAL JESUS. “So I also will choose their delusions and mockings, their calamities and afflictions, and I will bring their fears upon them—because when I called, no one answered; when I spoke, they did not listen or obey. Make ever so sure, beloved, that you have ‘The Right Jesus’ in mind, and ‘The Right Gospel,’ and importantly, ‘The Right Teacher’ of the Gospel. On your very life for the Stormy Days to come. There and there alone is our only True Shelter.
