NOTES ON LOSING NEVERLAND: SALVATION VS. SUPERSTITION IN THE AMERICAN CHURCH – PART III: MAMMON
SCRIPTURE. “Come [quickly] now, you rich [who lack true faith and hoard and misuse your resources], weep and howl over the miseries [the woes, the judgments] that are coming upon you.” – JAMES 5:1, AMP
QUOTATIONS
SOCRATES. “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.” ― Socrates, c. 400 BC
DOSTOYEVSKY. “The world says: ‘You have needs — satisfy them. You have as much right as the rich and the mighty. Don’t hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your needs and demand more.’ This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe that this is freedom. The result for the rich is isolation and suicide, for the poor, envy and murder.” ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, ‘The Brothers Karamazov,’ 1880; edited
VONNEGUT. “Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created. Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage. And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus, ‘the American Dream’ turned belly up, turned green, bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, ‘God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, or Pearls Before Swine,’ 1965; edited
- FIRST THOUGHTS
Since we began this essay with the great Greek philosopher, Socrates, who some of the Church Fathers considered a ‘Pre-Christian Pagan,’ let me turn a page in that ancient book to the ideas sponsored by another group of thinkers that whose spirit is in the current American bloodstream, best I can discern it.
THE EPICUREANS. This school of thought bears directly on our discussion for today, and I think you will quickly see why in this simplified Definition.
“Followers of the Greek philosopher [and atomist], EPICURUS (who died at Athens 270 BC), were adherents of the Epicurean Philosophy that was a System of Atheism. It taught men to seek as their highest aim [a largely materialist] pleasant and smooth life. They have been called the ‘Sadducees”’ of Greek Paganism. They, with the Stoics, ridiculed the Teaching of Paul (Acts 17:18). They appear to have been greatly esteemed at Athens.” – JAMES ORR, General Editor, “Entry for Epicureans,” ‘International Standard Bible Encyclopedia,’ 1915; edited
Though I had not originally planned this, the preaching of PAUL AT ATHENS at the Jewish Synagogue there where the people gathered to hear him, is fascinating. Listen to our venerable Patriarch speak to these brilliant unbelievers, philosophers, religious leaders there, and yes, the ever-present Epicureans.
It is so instructive for what we face today in a deeply confused, divided America.
So Paul, standing in the center of the Areopagus [Mars Hill meeting place], said: ‘Men of Athens, I perceive in every way [on every hand and with every turn I make] that you are most religious or very reverent to demons. For as I passed along and carefully observed your objects of worship, I came also upon an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you are already worshiping as unknown, this I set forth to you …
Because He has fixed a day when He will judge the world righteously (justly) by a Man Whom He has destined and appointed for that task, and He has made this credible and given conviction and assurance and evidence to everyone by raising Him from the dead.’
Now when they had heard [that there had been] a resurrection from the dead, some scoffed; but others said, ‘We will hear you again about this matter.’ So Paul went out from among them. But some men were on his side and joined him and believed (became Christians); among them were Dionysius, a judge of the Areopagus, and a woman named Damaris, and some others with them.” – ACTS 17:22-23, 31-34, AMPC
The powerful relevance here is starkly outlined by the Apostle, in offering them A CHOICE between the Epicurean pursuit of ‘Leisure and Pleasure’ – versus the Christian pursuit of ‘the One True God,’ as even Socrates and Plato in their own understanding had argued for the Much Higher Way.
THESIS. I propose that the American Dream is currently defined by the ribald and shamelessly Epicurean WORSHIP OF MAMMON, rather than the God of whom Paul spoke so wisely and eloquently. It is embodied in the New Christianity of ‘Trumpian Nationalism,’ and shall surely prove to be our Destruction as a free-standing Republic if it continues unabated.
Selah.
- AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH
Before moving to the next section of this discussion, I want us to be grounded in a proper Definition of Mammon, the very Centerpiece of the ideas under review.
- JESUS CHRIST. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord].” – MATTHEW 6:24, AMP
- MAMMON. From the Greek term, ‘Mamónas’ [μαμωνᾶς]: “(Aramaic) – Riches, money, possessions, property; ‘the treasure a person trusts in;’ placing confidence in material wealth; a comprehensive word for all kinds of possessions, earnings, and gains; a designation of material value; a reference by the Messiah here to ‘the god of riches,’ and by extension, the temporary pleasure and false security they provide.”
- WILLIAM MACDONALD. “The impossibility of living for God and for Money is stated here in terms of ‘Masters and Slaves.’ No one can serve two masters. One will inevitably take precedence in his loyalty and obedience. So it is with God and Mammon. They present rival claims, and A CHOICE must be made. Either we must put God first and reject the rule of Materialism or we must live for Temporal Things and refuse God’s claim on our lives.
DK’S TAKE. Note the Absolute Binary here: You cannot, beloved, you cannot have it both ways and call yourself a true disciple of Christ. Once again, I see the nature of the Genuine Gospel in a blaze of clarity in these Last Days. One, or the Other – but not both!
If you wish to debate the point, I strongly urge you to take it up with the One who spoke it, rather than with me. I know I say it a great deal: “I didn’t write The Book,” beloved.
NEIL POSTMAN. In one of the most brilliant expositions of this almost uniquely American Quest for Material Pleasure comes to us from the late Dr. Neil Postman, former Chairman of New York University’s program in Media Ecology.
His landmark book, ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business’ published in 1985, exploded onto the academic scene like a bomb burst of prescient warning of the Power of Media to transform society in massively and permanently destructive ways.
Here is summary statement of his Major Thesis.
“We were keeping our eye on ‘1984.’ When the year came and the [1949 Orwellian] Prophecy didn’t, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of Liberal Democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares.
But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell‘s dark vision, there was another – slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley‘s ‘Brave New World’ [1932]. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley‘s vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.
What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one … As Huxley remarked in ‘Brave New World Revisited’ [1958], that the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny ‘failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.’ In ‘1984’ Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting Pain. In ‘Brave New World,’ they are controlled by inflicting Pleasure.
In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us. This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right.” – “Forward,” pp. vii-viii; edited
Our study of the Rule of Antichrist in America instructs us that it is very likely that Huxley’s Pleasure Principle shall characterize the ‘Beginning’ of this rise with promises of The American Dream. But the ‘Completion’ of his dictatorship shall surely prove to bear out Huxley’s Principle of Pain.
CHRISTIAN HEDONISM. In his book, ‘Desiring God’ [1986], JOHN PIPER flips all this on its head by arguing for Christians to become what he calls a ‘Christian Hedonist.’
“A Hedonist is one who believes that the pursuit of pleasure is the most important thing in life. A Christian Hedonist realizes that True Pleasure is only found in Christ and His work, and, as a result, sacrifices everything in pursuit of that Pleasure. While at first glance it seems selfish and wrong to serve God for our own pleasure, it is actually exactly what God is asking of us. He wants us to love and desire Him with everything we have because this desire is what ultimately brings Him glory. A cook receives pleasure and glory from the joy people get from his food, an artist his paintings, a musician his music, and so on. Similarly, God receives pleasure and glory when we as humans receive our greatest pleasure in Him—when we find and enjoy Him in every aspect of His Creation.” – Cited in STEWART EBERSOLE, “In Pursuit of Pleasure,” ‘Think Truth,’ March 9, 2020; edited
Controversial to this day, but I becoming convinced that he’s on to something here: When I sense God’s Pleasure by my conduct, I participate in that Joy as a result. The famous 1924 Christian Olympian, ERIC LIDDEL, who famously said this:
“I believe that God made me for a Purpose. But he also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His Pleasure.” Selah.
- THE TEACHING
SCRIPTURE. “Come [quickly] now, you rich [who lack true faith and hoard and misuse your resources], weep and howl over the miseries [the woes, the judgments] that are coming upon you.” – JAMES 5:1, AMP
As always, straight to our KEY TERMS from this rather severe passage from the Apostle to the very wealthy Americans among us. Caveat: ‘Wealth’ is a somewhat relative term that I shall define precisely in what follows.
- YOU RICH. From the Greek word, ‘Plousios’ [πλούσιος]: “Abounding in material resources; wealthy; fully provisioned by having ‘muchness;’ valuable bestowment; opulent; possessing a large portion of land, goods or money, or a larger portion than is common to other men or to men of like rank; ‘abounding’ in that which is splendid, costly, valuable, precious or sumptuous.” DK: That is to say, ‘having more than you need’ pretty much all the time.
- YOUR MISERIES. The term used here is ‘Talaipória’ [ταλαιπωρία]: “Hard work, hardship, distress; misery, distress, toil; literally, a calloused (miserable) condition; wretchedness resulting from ongoing, intense affliction; trouble and calamity; enduring, ongoing trials; great unhappiness; extreme pain of body or mind; misfortune; natural evils which are the cause of misery [as a result of] covetousness.” DK: God is here expressing the case of the very rich who live for their money and lifestyle more than for God.
- MATTHEW HENRY. “Public troubles are most grievous to those who live in pleasure, and are secure and sensual, though all ranks suffer deeply at such times. All ‘idolized treasures’ will soon perish, except as they will rise up in Judgment against their possessors. Take heed of defrauding and oppressing; and avoid the very appearance of it. God does not forbid us to use lawful pleasures; but ‘to live in pleasure,’ especially sinful pleasure, is a provoking sin. Is it no harm for people to unfit themselves for minding the concerns of their souls, by indulging bodily appetites? The just may be condemned and killed; but when such suffer by oppressors, this is marked by God. Above all their other crimes, the Jews had condemned and crucified that Just One who had come among them, even Jesus Christ the righteous.” DK: The painful application is for all who support Trump Nationalism while the faithful followers who do not are persecuted, God marks it! – ‘Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited
THE QUESTION. As I was reviewing this section, I was troubled somewhat about why God was being so tough on all “You rich.” Then I read WILLIAM MACDONALD’S Commentary, along with Henry’s above, and it became clear. Consider the following, beloved, and make necessary adjustments should you be ‘Affluent.’
“First He summons The Rich to weep and howl because of the miseries which they were about to experience. Soon they would meet God. Then they would be filled with shame and remorse. They would see that they had been unfaithful stewards. They would wail over the opportunities they had missed. They would mourn over their covetousness and selfishness. They would be convicted about their unfair employment practices. They would see The Sin of seeking security in material things rather than in the Lord. And they would shed hot tears over the way they had indulged themselves to the full. James mentions four Cardinal Sins of the rich. The first is the sin of ‘Hoarding wealth.’” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 2239; edited
DK’S TAKE. After pondering all this in my heart and head, it seems to me that the Lord is severe with The Wealthy because they simply could not have possibly accumulated such riches without having made wealth ‘their obsession,’ their idol, their priority in life.
Thus, did He say it so plain: “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man [who places his faith in wealth and status] to enter the kingdom of God.” – MARK 10:25, AMP
THE REST OF THE STORY. As one considers the ‘next five verses ‘from the indictment by James, the gravity of the crime nearly overwhelms one’s soul.
“Your wealth has rotted and is ruined and your [fine] clothes have become moth-eaten. Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. You have stored up your treasure in the last days [when it will do you no good]. Look! The wages that you have [fraudulently] withheld from the laborers who have mowed your fields are crying out [against you for vengeance]; and the cries of the harvesters have come to the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. On the earth you have lived luxuriously and abandoned yourselves to soft living and led a life of wanton pleasure [self-indulgence, self-gratification]; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and have put to death the righteous man; he offers you no resistance.” – VV. 2-6, AMP
The Fire and Fury of the Lord and King against this Pursuit of Wealth and Pleasure is Noteworthy, which leads to the final conclusions and implications of the next section.
- FINAL THOUGHTS: THE PROSPERITY GOSPEL
So let me cut to the chase here: I believe that the preachers and teachers and leaders of the Prosperity Movement, along with those connected to it by heart and head, are headed for some very Rough Seas ahead.
ABOMINATION. God considers this form of Idolatry and its attendant Betrayal of Christ to be found in the Greek term, ‘Bdelugma’ [βδέλυγμα], or: “A detestable, accursed thing; literally, derived from ‘bdēō,’ to ‘reek with stench’ – properly, what emits a foul odor and hence is disgustingly abhorrent (abominable, detestable); (figuratively) moral horror as a stench to God (like when people refuse to hear and obey His voice).” DK: Does God have everyone’s attention about here? I trust He does.
In short: I am convinced that God is about to Dismantle this False Doctrine once and for all, starting with its ‘Leading Voices,’ then working down through the ranks. It may come in increments according to God’s normal strategy of Gradualism, to give maximum time for Repentance.
But it will happen. Here’s why.
“For the time [has arrived] for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will [be] the end of those who do not respect or believe or obey the good news (the Gospel) of God?” – 1 PETER 4:17, AMPC
CASE STUDY 1. I happened to turn the television channel just last this morning (Tuesday October 19, 2021) to a commercial for someone called PETER POPOFF. He was hawking some sort of magic water from some mystical spring that would bring instant healing or money or whatever one needed, to all who would donate to his “ministry.”
Here is a ‘Truth in Advertising’ review of this latest of many of his notorious Money Scams. – August 25, 2020; edited
“‘This ‘Faith Tool’ will help you to see liberation from the bondage of debt,’ Popoff says in the ad. ‘It’s free. I want to send it to you, no obligation. Call me now’ …
Within a couple weeks, the water arrived in the mail, along with a long letter from Popoff in which he prophesied that ‘a sudden release of money … somewhere between $1,900 and $19,000’ was headed our way. All we had to do was use the water as directed and one other small thing. ‘SEND EXACTLY $19.00,’ Popoff wrote. ‘Because 1 is the number of the Father … and 9 is the number of NEW BIRTH.’ Sure, why not? We sent the $19.
About a month later, we received a response from Popoff thanking us for the ‘seed-gift of $19.00,’ which we were assured would soon bring us ‘a bountiful Harvest of Great Blessings.’ Popoff said to let him know as soon as that happens. Well, it’s been more than five months since we initially sent for the miracle spring water and we’re still waiting for our check. In the meantime, we’ve accumulated many additional requests from Popoff for varying amounts of money (which may help to explain how he’s able to afford a multimillion-dollar home, according to GQ).”
NOTE: “Peter Popoff is a German American televangelist and faith healer who has a net worth of $10 MILLION. Peter Popoff was born in West Berlin, Germany in July 1946. His family immigrated to the United States when he was a child. Popoff attended Chaffey College and the University of California, Santa Barbara.” – ‘Celebrity Net Worth,’ ret. October 19, 2021; edited
‘Sure Dr. Kelly, but that’s an extreme case, not representative of the great majority of Evangelicals in America.’ You sure about that, beloved? While this is indeed an extreme Case of One, I propose further that the Spirit of Mammon is in the American Church as a ‘Deep Structure Infection’ as never before in her history.
DOCTRINAL IGNORANCE. We turn to the Roots of that splintering from a Review of a special documentary on what we derisively call, ‘The American Gospel.’
“The new Netflix documentary ‘American Gospel: Christ Alone’ [2018] shows in gory detail the often-grave consequences of ‘Theological Illiteracy.’ Interviewing several pastors, faith leaders and Christians who have encountered the Prosperity Gospel, launched counter-initiatives or climbed out of its grip, the documentary takes a two-fold approach to the issue. It addresses both the theological roots and errors as well as the tangible ramifications of this distinctly American theology.
The Prosperity Gospel is an offshoot of Evangelicalism in the United States, promulgated by household names like KENNETH COPELAND, T.D. JAKES and JOEL OSTEEN.
It brings with it many buzzword phrases like ‘name it and claim it’ and ‘health, wealth and happiness.’ Central to the teaching is a fundamentally ‘Broken Christology,’ the documentary suggests. It navigates the theological mechanics of the movement with surprising nuance and accuracy while avoiding the temptation to aggregate all of American Christianity, or even all of American Evangelicalism, under a single, pejorative header. It grapples with the pervasiveness and evils of the Prosperity Gospel without issuing a universal condemnation of Christianity.” – LIZA VANDENBOOM, “Review of American Gospel,” ‘Religion Unplugged,’ June 20, 2020; edited
Without question, this once Fringe Doctrine has today infiltrated the Pews and Pulpits of almost all American churches across economic, racial and denominational lines and classifications. It has truly become a unique and virulent form of Christianity that was ‘Readymade for Trumpism,’ the quintessential, malevolent Materialist.
CASE STUDY 2. Elevation Church pastored by STEVEN FURTICK is a case in point of the extreme devastation the Prosperity Sacrilege can do to a Christian pulpit and congregation. Here is a blistering, no holds barred critique – the kind the Lion of Judah shall bring a bit later – of that Church, located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Buckle up, beloved.
“Elevation Church is one of the most subversive and dangerous Pseudo-Christian Movements in the world. Following in the footsteps of Hillsong, Steven Furtick, the Lead Pastor, has built an empire that has grown tremendously with now over 20 campuses and even internationally with campuses in Toronto.
[His] Prosperity Gospel is arguably the second-most nefarious and subversive false gospel plaguing the American Church today, right behind the Social Justice Gospel. The Prosperity Gospel teaches that God is, in a sense, a ‘Genie in a bottle’ and by having enough ‘Faith,’ you can get what you want from him — Material Gain! …
Steven Furtick has built ‘his’ empire around a False Gospel and from that has emerged a False Jesus. His church steers people away from the living God and resurrected Jesus Christ and lures them into their Movement of Self-Idolatry. Elevation Church is not of God, it is a Synagogue of Satan. Elevation Church is from the pits of Hell.” – EDITORS, “Elevation Church is from Hell,” ‘Reformation Charlotte,’ March 7, 2020; edited
Oh yes, his Net Worth is $55 million. – cf. Money Inc., Wealth Record, etc.
ENTER TRUMP NATIONALISM. On the fatally ruptured heels of this theological treachery comes Donald John Trump’s flag-waving, shamelessly anti-Christian “America First” Campaign. And the Material Church resounded to it like puppies and kitties to their first bowl of milk.
Their Theological Anemia could not withstand the glare and sparkle of a carnie-barking Shaman singing to their wanton tune. Nor were Pastors willing to call it like God saw it.
THE RESULT. It is what we experience today, as we witness the Horror of a Balkanized American Church, split into nearly armed camps. So powerfully depicted in the following somewhat raw analysis by TIMOTHY DALRYMPLE, President and CEO of ‘Christianity Today,’ in his compelling analysis, “The Splintering of the American Soul,” April 16, 2021; edited.
“New Fractures are forming within the American Evangelical Movement, Fractures that do not run along the usual regional, denominational, ethnic, or political lines. Couples, families, friends, and congregations once united in their commitment to Christ are now Dividing over seemingly irreconcilable views of the world. In fact, they are not merely dividing but becoming incomprehensible to one another …
The Quandary is not unique to Evangelicals. But fellow believers who once stood shoulder to shoulder now find that tectonic shifts have thrust them apart, their continents are separating, and they cannot find a bridge back to common ground. How could our views of reality diverge so dramatically—and is there anything we can do to draw together again?”
Though Dr. Dalrymple offers well meaning, sophisticated Remedy for this dire spiritual condition via something described as “building bridges” to the opposing informational sides and improved media performance, I don’t think he went deep enough into our Tortured Spiritual Soil, beloved.
THE SOLUTION. So to this. After nearly five years of grappling with this unprecedented shattering of Christian Orthodoxy, I dare to suggest the following FOUR STEPS to begin to resolve the Historic Impasse it has created.
- RENEWED MINDS. Paul’s Letter to the Romans posits an absolute Prime Directive for all followers of Christ, as a necessary platform on which to build one’s faith and active expression of the Faith. ROMANS 12:2: “And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]” (AMP). DK: All of this must begin, especially for Pastors and Church Leaders, with Humility, and a ‘Confession of Error.’ Without such Repentance, we shall remain stuck in our Apostasy toward complete destruction. – cf. Luke 13:3; James 4:6
- RENEWED FIRE. In Luke’s Sequel to his Gospel, Jesus Himself gives His disciples final instructions to before He ascended into Heaven before their very eyes. ACTS 1:4, 8: “While being together and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, ‘Of which,’ He said, ‘you have heard Me speak … But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.’” DK: While this Doctrine of the Holy Spirit has created many divisions in the Church, I cannot but say to you all: Just ask Him to “fill you with His Fire,” in the name of Jesus Christ – and He shall take care of the rest.
- RENEWED CHURCH. You will note that the inescapable Truth that a combination of ‘Sound Doctrine and Spiritual Empowerment’ is vital to a fully armed Church, against which the very Gates of Hell shall not be able to prevail (cf. Matthew 16:18; Luke 10:19). DK: One of the great weaknesses of a doctrinally illiterate Church is that it doesn’t know how to fight; all is love and kisses and hugs, and nothing more. Therefore, we desperately need theological instruction in how we are to Engage our enemy. Beyond the passages already cited, this one must be a First Priority. EPHESIANS 6:13: “Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious]” (AMP). Somehow, I find myself wanting to shout a guttural, passionatel and loud ‘Oorah!’ right about here.
- RENEWED NATION. Now the hardest part of all: A National Awakening. I must confess, beloved, I think it’s too late. But then I’m not God, and there is Nineveh as precedent (Jonah 3:6), so here is how I shall end this essay, with a reminder of America’s First Great Awakening. MELISSA PETRUZELLO of ‘Britannica’ (July 21, 2021) does an excellent job of getting to the heart of its Causes: “The Great Awakening represented a reaction against the increasing Secularization of society and against the corporate and Materialistic nature of the principal churches of American society.” DK: Ahem. Everybody getting this? Enlightenment Thinking and Materialism required a Spiritual Renewal like none other in American history. It is all the more vital today in this Last Hour. – 1 John 2:18
CODA. I conclude with a return to my beloved RICHARD WEAVER, and his prophetic magnum opus, ‘Ideas Have Consequences,’ published in 1948.
As with the very Creation of Almighty God in Genesis 1, all things begin with ‘Logos’ [λόγος], defined by ‘Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance’ (1890) as: “A word (as embodying an idea), intelligence and its expression; a statement, a speech, divine utterance using human language.”
Which drives us inexorably back to The First Word ever spoke in the annals of human history, recorded by the Apostle.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” – JOHN 1:1-5, NKJV
SOMETHING’S COMING. As we close our thoughts about the False Doctrines of today, and the desperate condition of the American Order, Dr. Weaver’s concluding remarks at the end of that very great book are fitting.
“It may be that we are awaiting a Great Change, that the sins of the fathers are going to be visited upon the generations until the reality of Evil is again brought home and there comes some passionate reaction, like that which flowered in the Chivalry and Spirituality of the Middle Ages. If such is the most we can hope for, something toward that Revival may be prepared by Acts of Thought and Volition in this waning Day of the West.” – p. 187; edited
That ‘Great Change’ is coming, beloved, ever so soon. How you shall receive it depends entirely on your Closeness to the Canon and to its Author.
Ever your servant, DK
