NOTES ON LOVE AND TRUTH: THE PROPER CHRISTIAN RESPONSE TO BRUTES, BULLIES, AND BIGOTS IN THE AMERICAN CHURCH

SCRIPTURE. “Love endures with patience and serenity, love is kind and thoughtful, and is not jealous or envious; love does not brag and is not proud or arrogant. ‘It is not rude;’ it is not self-seeking, it is not provoked [nor overly sensitive and easily angered]; it does not take into account a wrong endured. It does not rejoice at injustice, but rejoices with the truth’ [when right and truth prevail].” – 1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-6, AMP

FAULKNER. “Never be afraid to raise your voice for Honesty and Truth and Compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world … would do this, it would change the Earth.” ― William Faulkner,Speech to his daughter’s high school class, May 28 1951, at Fulton Chapel, University of Mississippi; edited

BUCCIANERI. “An acquaintance merely enjoys your company, a fair-weather companion flatters when all is well, a True Friend has your best interests at heart and the pluck to tell you what you need to hear.” ― E.A. Buccianeri, ‘Brushstrokes of a Gadfly,’ 2018; edited

KINZINGER. “I certainly think the President is guilty of knowing what he did, seditious conspiracy, being involved in these, you know, kind of different segments of pressuring the DOJ, vice president, et cetera … Unfortunately, my Party has utterly failed the American people at truth. It makes me sad, but it’s a fact.” – Rep. Adam Kinzinger, ‘Insider,’ June 19, 2022; edited

  1. FIRST THOUGHTS

Of all the things that the American Church currently struggles with that effectively neutralizes its impact on the American culture is this one is what one courageous Christian apologist named MARK KARAPEYTYAN wrote straight into his point-blank title:

“TIMID CHRISTIANITY.” – ‘What if UR Wrong,’ ret. July 18, 2022

This is the one thing that drives me into considerable grief and punctuated outrage, keeping me up at night, wrestling me into a Soul-Ache as nothing else ever has before in over 40 years of following the Messiah.

And I don’t think it’s because I’m a man with a pretty fiery heart.

No, beloved, it’s much deeper than that, much more  theologically pernicious than that. It is Betrayal’ by any other name, that does nearly mortal injury to the Cause of Christ as when that ancient Rabble screamed at the top of their lungs, “Give us Barabbas!” instead of setting Jesus free.

A favorite quotation of mine over the years about all this comes to us from the razor-sharp pen of C.S. LEWIS in his classic, ‘The Abolition of Man’ in 1943. Although I have read it many times and quoted it more than once, repetition does not diminish its raw and eloquent power one bit.

“In a sort of ghastly simplicity, we remove the organ and demand the function. ‘We make men without chests’ and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.”

PRETTY PASTORS, PILLOW PROPHETS. Listen carefully to a man of God who foretold what is happening to the American church decades before it came to full flower. DAVID WILKERSON speaks to us from a sermon that was likely delivered in the 1990s at the latest, though technically undated.

“Ezekiel stood alone against all the false prophets of Israel. These prophets would have nothing to do with the message of righteousness and impending judgment. Instead, they prophesied an era of peace, ease and prosperity. Ezekiel 13 is the very Word of Jehovah against ‘preachers and prophets who accommodate people’ with flesh pleasing words they said were from the Lord. Their words were designed to make God’s people comfortable in the face of impending judgment.

In fact, they were not satisfied to prophesy good times ahead from their great houses and ivory beds of ease — they sought to provide A PILLOW for every elbow (Ezekiel 13:18). ‘Woe to those who apply pillows unto all elbows … Behold, I am against your pillows wherewith ye entice souls’ (Ezekiel 13:20).”

In a bold statement on October 15, 2015, the ‘American Pastors Network’ published a fiery rebuke of its own in the following summary SIX REASONS for refusing to teach on the thornier issues of the day.

  1. Fear of controversy or pushback from those in the pews if Biblical Principles are applied to the issues of the day.
  • Negative theological training regarding talking about impacting the culture or discussion of anything regarding civil government or politics.
  • Unjustified fear of losing their 501(c)(3) status.
  • Being unaware of the historical role of pastors in the history of America.
  1. Believing that the primary purpose for preaching is limited to “preaching the Gospel” rather than training and “making disciples.”
  1. Having more of a fear of man rather than a fear of God.

BARNA’S BOMBSHELL. They concluded their report by quoting Dr. George Barna’s excoriating reasons for the ‘Church’s moral collapse’ fully engaged by the Year 2015 – the very same year DONALD TRUMP would appear on the political scene to harvest the dark fruit of Church cowardice.

“Barna stated that many pastors are afraid to get involved in political issues because of the controversy it might create. And, he added, ‘Controversy keeps people from being in the seats, controversy keeps people from giving money, from attending programs.’”

If you listen very carefully, you can very possibly hear the rumble of Yahweh’s Groans about such treachery. We turn now to a few words about where this has led us by 2022.

  1. FROM TRUTH TELLING TO ‘BEING NICE’

It is my studied conviction that a sea change Transition’ has taken place in the American Church that has all but ruined our witness to the culture. It has to do with our sustained Rejection of Christ’s Commission to: ‘Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help us God!’ (cf. Zech. 8:16 Jn. 8:32; Eph. 4:15).

I will argue rather forcefully here that we have been turned from courageous Truth Tellers into an overly polite little gaggle of ‘Nice People’ – hardly the stuff that is about to turn the Nation or the world upside down for Christ and Canon!

I rather love the introduction to a hard-hitting piece by author JO SWEENEY, writing for ‘Christianity Today’ in a piece titled, “It is Not Christian to Be Nice” (Aug. 26, 2016).  She speaks powerfully to the fire in my bones, and I daresay, God’s.

“Somewhere along the way, Christianity has got itself entangled with a soapy, soft, non-offensive concept: ‘Niceness.’ The movement founded by a radical so offensive He got Himself killed has a bunch of followers who smile at each other with creepy insincerity; deep, warm crinkles at the corners of our eyes as we say ‘God bless you’ to shopkeepers in the hope that our niceness will get them to church where more nice people will be there to welcome them. Jesus did not ask us to be nice!”

TIMIDITY AND ‘BEING NICE.’ Christian writer DAVID SANFORD specifies “11 Reasons Christianity is More than Just ‘Being Nice’” (‘Christianity.com,’ Apr.20, 2020’ edited). Must reading for every American pastor today.

  1. JESUS SHAKES THINGS UP.  “Deconstructing ‘Nice’ Jesus leaves us with the uncomfortable reality of a Redeemer who modeled ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ by shaking people to their core.”
  • “NICE” ISN’T A BIBLICAL WORD. “I’ve checked every major English-language Bible published in the past five centuries. Stick with the Biblical Text itself. ‘Nice’ doesn’t appear once. Not even about Jesus.Especially not about Jesus!”
  • JESUS ISN’T JUST ‘SOFT AND SWEET.’ “Jesus doesn’t come in soft and sweet. Even on the best of days, He is anything but Mr. Nice. Not just not nice to the Pharisees (see Luke 16:13-15) and Sadducees (see Mark 12:18-27) , but also not nice to His own followers (see  Luke 24:25-27).”
  • JESUS IS UNPREDICTABLE AND LOVING. “‘Love your neighbor’ and ‘Follow Jesus’—it sounds so good until we try to do it. Jesus is so unpredictable, not nice at all, and so loving to so many unlikely people. ‘Not nice, yet so loving’ (see 1 John 4:17-19).”
  • CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE TRUTHFUL. “Our mutual friend RANDY ALCORN has said: ‘We’ve been schooled that it’s inappropriate to say anything negative. Being a good witness once meant faithfully representing Christ, even when it meant being unpopular. Now it means ‘making people like us.’ We’ve redefined ‘Christlike’ to mean ‘Nice.’ He’s right on the mark (see Ephesians 3:14-19).”
  • “NICE” STUNTS OUR SPIRITUAL IMAGINATION. “Never give in to The Lie that you can ‘nice’ someone to faith in Jesus Christ. ‘Nice’ is never enough. Besides, many of my neighbors can ‘out-nice’ me any day of the week. Instead, focus on ‘Loving God’ with all your heart, soul, strength and mind. Then, listen to your Maker inspire you with creative ideas and fresh opportunities.”
  • CHRISTIANS NEED TO SHOW RUGGED LOVE. “Jesus was loving. He was gracious. He was forgiving. He was kind. But he was ‘not’ nice. He was a Man who would leave the 99 sheep to rescue the one, but He was also totally unafraid of offending people. Jesus understood the difference between graciousness and personal compromise, between speaking truth and needlessly alienating people. Rather than wear a shiny veneer, He became ‘the embodiment of rugged love.’ This, not niceness, is what we are called to.”
  • CURRENT CULTURE DOESN’T RESPECT ‘NICE.’ “It’s not enough to be nice. When it comes to conversations about beliefs, morals, and faith, Christians have often emphasized the importance of being winsome and engaging. The thinking—driven by the right impulse—is that if Christians would be reeeeeally nice about things, then others would at least respect the people behind the beliefs. We should be disciplined, patient, and kind in sharing our beliefs, but simply being ‘nice’ to avoid ruffling anyone’s feathers, or held beliefs, isn’t what Jesus exemplifies.”
  • CHRISTIANS ARE TO BE COUNTERINTUITIVE, NOT ‘NICE.’ “Thankfully, Jesus already is at work in the lives of many of our neighbors. And Jesus invites us to join Him … in many unexpected, surprising ways. These surprising, often counterintuitive ways open us up to the Holy Spirit’s leading to be more than a ‘nice, loving Christian neighbor.’ While a ‘loving Christian’ is essential, ‘nice’ definitely is not a big enough word for what God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit had in mind for the 1st and 21st centuries.”
  1. CHRISTIANS ARE TO RESCUE JESUS FROM ‘NICE.’ “Jesus isn’t simply ‘nice.’ He doesn’t overlook what needs to be tended. That’s the whole point. Simply nice isn’t nice. Nice alone isn’t loving. It isn’t true. ‘It’s the illegitimate child of Romanticism,’ which turned the meaning of the word on its head. So, keep asking [the other person], ‘Do you think Jesus is trying to be nice?’ until they finally get it. Once we rescue Jesus from ‘nice,’ He becomes real in their eyes. And then His seemingly rude, ruthless ways begin to make sense (see Matthew 15:23-28).”
  1. JESUS PRAYS YOU WON’T JUST ‘BE NICE.’ “Right now, Jesus is praying for you to be anything but ‘just a nice Christian’ (see John 14:16-17). May His Holy Spirit fill you with unconventional, counterintuitive ways of loving your neighbor (see Acts 1:8Acts 4:8-12Acts 4:31Acts 8:29-40Acts 13:2-5, and especially Acts 16:6-7, where the Spirit closes several doors before opening an unexpected one!).

CHURCH WARS. Unfortunately, there is an opposite side to this great sweep of change in the Church: “Brutes, Bullies and Bigots.” Make that read: ‘MAGA Christians, housed overwhelmingly among White Evangelical Nationalists best described as largely ‘Anglo Hyper-Patriots’ who proudly bandy about both Bible and Flag to perversely justify belligerent, cruel and brutish racial and religious supremacy.

Thesis. I propose that the TIMIDS are terrified to go up against what the late CHARLES COLSON might have termed the BARBARIANS for fear of antagonizing his followers who sit in the pews and bring their tithes every Sunday to Church (‘Against the Night,’ 1989). Or worse, because they sit under the false and pernicious doctrine that to do so would be against Christ!

Or more probably, they’re just frightened.

With that horrific idea in mind, let’s move forward to look at what God would instruct us Adam to ACTUALLY DO about all this. This in fierce opposition to what our pastors are  overwhelmingly teaching us to do – Nothing!

  1. THE TEACHING

It does not rejoice at injustice but rejoices with the truth’ [when right and truth prevail].” – 1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-6, AMP

Without further delay then, we go straight to TWO MAIN POINTS from this formidable and too often misunderstood passage of Scripture dealing with both Love and Truth.

  • LOVE IS NOT RUDE. For just a moment, I’m going to approach the entire notion of Biblical Love from the perspective of one of its conceptual opposites. It is taken from the Greek term, ‘Aschémoneó’[ἀσχημονέω]: “To act unbecomingly or improperly;  to conduct oneself dishonorably; fully or utterly disgraceful; with roughness; also, violently or fiercely; acting in an uncivil manner without precision and accuracy [of terms or logic].”
  • REJOICES IN THE TRUTH. He we turn to that which is strenuously opposed to rudeness, roughness, brutishness and violence. Taken from the Greek word, ‘Chairó’ [χαίρω]: “To be glad; also, to hail! joy as a direct result of God’s grace; to exult or rejoice greatly, as with a young calf skipping about; to be well, to thrive; to be exhilarated with lively and pleasurable sensations; feel or show great joy or delight.” DK: Significantly, when the true follower of Christ encounters the ‘opposite of truth’ from a so-called believer or especially a leader or pastor, he is normally and naturally repulsed’ by it – as Almighty God is repulsed by it!

FALSE BRETHREN. The very reason we have all these emotions and spiritual antagonisms when encountering someone who is behaving the opposite of what the Scriptures require, while claiming to Christian, we react in the same way the Law and the Prophets and the Apostles and even the Messiah Himself:

With horror!

The rest of our study will specify just how we are to act out that horror in ways that are pleasing and fitting to God. NOTE: The ‘absence’ of  being horrified is a serious sin called ‘Lukewarmness.’ So very serious that it will cause Jesus Christ to vomit  the offender from His mouth at The Judgment. – cf. Revelation 3:16-18

‘CHRISTIAN BRUTES.’ I know. Horrible combination of two terms, “Christian,” and “Brutes.”  Yet there it is, beloved, millions of them in our very midst as I write these words.

  • ‘ALOGOS’ [ἄλογος]. This is the Greek term for “Brute,” translated in this way: “Unreasonable, irrational, and cruel; against Divine reason; beastly; lacks sound moral reasoning.; senseless; savage, [wild at] heart or manner;  absurd, acting like a brute beast or animal; bestial, uncivilized; [morally] low bred and unfeeling man [absent of virtue or compassion].”
  • BULLIES. “Although we do not find the word ‘bullying’ in the Bible, we do find the word ‘Brutish,’ a synonym of the monstrous thuggery associated with thieves, assassins, and savage beasts (Psalm 49:10Proverbs 12:1Isaiah 19:11). The Hebrew and Greek words translated ‘brute’ or ‘brutish’ mean ‘stupid, foolish, and irrational, as cattle’ … It being evident that Christians should not be bullies [but] … When a Christian observes bullying, it may be appropriate to step in and help prevent the attack against the victim. Each situation will be different, and many times stepping in will add to the problem, but often it takes just one person to stand up on behalf of a weaker party in order to stop the bullying and prevent it in the future.” – EDITORS, ‘Got Questions,’ ret. July 17, 2022; edited

THE CALL TO RESIST EVIL. One of the darker underpinnings of the American Story is that I believe the Church has almost entirely forgotten this Sacred Duty – To our great Shame and to our great Decline.

A couple of thoughts on that before we move to the last section.

  • EPHESIANS 6:13 (AMP). “Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] RESIST and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], ‘to stand firm’ [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious].”
  • CHRISTIAN RESISTANCE THEORY. “Resistance Theory is an aspect of political thought, discussing the basis on which constituted authority may be ‘resisted,’ by individuals or groups. In the European context it came to prominence as a consequence of the religious divisions in the Early Modern Period that followed the Protestant Reformation. Resistance Theories could justify ‘Disobedience on religious grounds’ to monarchs [and Church elites], and were significant in European national politics and international relations in the century leading up to the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 [between Catholics and Protestants].” – “Resistance Theory in the Early Modern Period,” ‘Wikipedia,’ May 25, 2017; edited
  • THE CALL. “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for Us?’ Then said I, ‘Here am I; send me!’ And He said, ‘Go and tell this people, Hear and hear continually, but understand not; and see and see continually, but do not apprehend with your mind.’” – ISAIAH 6:8-9, AMPC

JOHN GILL INTERPRETS. “‘Whom shall I send?’ To the people of Israel, ‘to reprove them’ for their blindness and stupidity, and to threaten them, and foretell unto them their ruin and destruction; intimating that it was a difficult thing to pitch upon a proper person; and that ‘there were but few’ that were fit to go on such an errand: this is spoken after the manner of men; otherwise the Lord knew whom to send, and whom he would send; and could easily qualify anyone he pleased, and send with such a message … ‘Then said I, “Here am I, send me!” For he who before thought himself undone, and unworthy to be employed in the service of God, now having a discovery and application of pardoning grace, freely offers himself to God.” – ‘An Exposition of the Old and New Testament,’ 9 vols., 1746-1763; edited

The Point here is a very poignant one, that sometimes brings a tear as I listen to the plaintive heart-cry of our King: “For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth so that He may support those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chron. 16:9).

THE WEDDING FEAST. As if to emphasize His near desperation to find such a man or such a woman, here He repeats this nearly Forgotten Doctrine in the powerful and deeply moving Parable of the Wedding Feast. Listen ever so closely to the heart of the Lion of Judah who is making all things Ready for His soon Return.

Presented verbatim in full for maximum impact to the point of this essay.

And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said: “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come.

Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

For many are called, but few are chosen.” – MATTHEW 22:1-14, NKJV

THE MEANING. The Parable needs no further explanation or elucidation, with the exception of one, glaring and unforgivably overlooked Reality: The King’s outrage!

  1. LAST THOUGHTS

THE CONFESSING CHURCH. The very first step in our matriculation as a Last Days component of the Remnant Church possessed of spiritual firepower, divine compassion, great courage and discernment of the times, is to look to a very noble Predecessor.

Under the leadership of DIETRICH BONHOEFFER and his colleagues, the Lord raised up The Confessing Church in World War II Germany to resist and withstand the onslaught of Christian Fascism in their time.

JOSEPH MATTERA writing for ‘Charisma Magazine’ on December 4, 2014 – long before the Trump Virus ruined his theology and STEVEN STRANG’S magazine, brilliantly outlines EIGHT CONTRASTS between a true Confessing Church and the horrible mess we see in today’s American churches.

  1. In the Confessing church, Christ is over culture. The Compromising Church accommodates Christ to culture. .
  1. The Confessing Church holds fast to the Word of God in spite of opposition. The Compromising Church alters the Word of God because of opposition.
  1. The Confessing Church puts the Kingdom of God above their culture and ethnicity. The Compromising Church puts their ethnicity before the Kingdom of God.
  1. The Confessing Church alters its methods of preaching. The Compromising Church alters the message they preach.
  1. The Confessing Church is a remnant in the minority of church and state. The Compromising Church wants to be in the mainstream of both church and state.
  1. The Confessing Church is penalized by the state government. The Compromising Church is applauded by the state government.
  1. The Confessing Church prophetically speaks truth to power. The Compromising Church conforms to those in power.
  1. The Confessing Church desires the praise of God. The Compromising Church desires the praise of men.

THE CONFESSING CHRISTIAN. In light of these powerful historic principles of the original Confessing Church, we finish our discussion with some Individual Duties we must live out every single day to honor this Confessing Church Vision in these treacherous Last Days.

  • LOVE GOD. I’ll cut right to the chase: ‘Would you be willing to be die for Christ if He asked you to?’ I have mentioned before that I was personally unable to answer that Question in the affirmative until 2017 – the year I published my book. REVELATION 12:11 INSTRUCTS: “For they did not love their life and renounce their faith even when faced with death.” Until you can answer that question with a resounding “Yes, Lord,” you are not worthy to be His disciple. But when you can, you will become stronger and freer than any eagle flying high in God’s firmament!
  • RESIST EVIL. Now then, continuing to get down to brass tacks: Just what does it mean to actually, actively, ‘Resist evil? We start with this – ROMANS 12:9 (AMP): “Love is to be sincere and active [the real thing—without guile and hypocrisy]. ‘Hate what is evil’ [detest all ungodliness, do not tolerate wickedness]; ‘hold on tightly to what is good’ [join fast, keep company with and labor for].” MEANING: (1) Commending the Good! (2) Exposing and Rebuking the Evil! Most especially beloved in these Last Days of deception and falsehood and treachery,  almost singularly inside the House of Almighty God! – cf. Mt. 18:15-17; 1 Cor. 5:13, 9:22;
  • SPEND TIME. Now here is where Gods Deep Work on the radical transformation of our souls and spirits and minds and lives takes place – or not! You will find ‘He will remove things from your life’ that stand in the way of much deeper communion with Him. And it all begins and ends with spending copious amounts of time with Him and His Word. All alone, one-on-one, mano a mano. At least one hour per day. So that the mystery and  the wonder of this can take place – PSALM 42:7 (AMP): “[Roaring] deep calls to [roaring] deep at the thunder of Your waterspouts; all Your breakers and Your rolling waves have gone over me.” Beloved, let Him have full at you in this way, and you will never ever be the same.

CODA. Neither Timid nor Truculent, neither Cowardly nor Savage, these Soldiers of the Cross are very specially trained to do one thing: ‘Speak truth in love with great power.’ They can be called by several names:

Warriors. Disciples. Confessors. Reformers. Champions. Remnants. Indeed, they are ‘Philadelphians!’

“I know your deeds. See, I have set before you AN OPEN DOOR [of opportunity, and the Kingdom of Heaven] which no one is able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not renounced or denied My name. Take note, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—I will make them come and bow down at your feet and make them know [without any doubt] that I have loved you. Because you have kept the word of My endurance [My command to persevere], I will keep you [safe] from the hour of trial, that hour which is about to come on the whole [inhabited] world, to test those who live on the earth.” – REVELATION 3:8-10, AMP

And they issue from the pen of the Great Reformer at similar time, called by The Mighty One to grapple with the titanic forces at work in his own time of Truth and Falsehood, Good and Evil, Righteousness and Wretchedness, issuing from the musty ancient Catacombs of God’s own House!

To Conclude then, here are Luther’s Marching Orders to us all.

LUTHER’S CONFESSION. “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every proportion of the Truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. ‘Where the battle rages,’ there the loyalty of the soldier is proved, and to be steady on all the battlefield besides, is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.” – c. 1530 AD

THE PLEDGE. So, if you are ready to forsake all, and I mean all for Jesus Christ, being willing to obey Him to do whatever He says to do, to say whatever He commands you to say, or to go wherever He tells you to go, then SIGN ON TODAY . in your own time and place, with your Personal Confession to give your everything to Him.

In other words, if you are ever ready to RUN TO THE BATTLE wherever it is found, rather than fleeing from it, then, beloved, then – You are truly worthy to be called His disciple.

THE RESULT. Inarguably, you shall receive in return the most electrifying and fruitful and dangerous and wonderful life you could ever live. And of course, Eternity with God forever, working side by side with Him to help explore and govern the entire Universe with all of it still unknown wonders.

All God asks of us in this exchange, is our entire life. And nothing less.
