PART III: “BECOMING PHILADELPHIANS”

SCRIPTURE: “I know your deeds. See, I have set before you an open door which no one is able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not renounced or denied My name…Because you have kept the word of My endurance [My command to persevere], I will keep you [safe] from the hour of trial, that hour which is about to come on the whole [inhabited] world, to test those who live on the earth.” – REVELATION 3:8,10, AMP

QUOTATIONS

“[On February 22, 156 AD, BISHOP POLYCARP] was escorted to the local proconsul, Statius Quadratus, who interrogated him in front of a crowd of curious onlookers. Polycarp seemed unfazed by the interrogation; he carried on a witty dialogue with Quadratus until Quadratus lost his temper and threatened Polycarp: He’d be thrown to wild beasts, he’d be burned at the stake, and so on. Polycarp just told Quadratus that while the Proconsul’s fire lasts but a little while, the fires of judgment (‘reserved for the ungodly,’ he slyly added) cannot be quenched. Polycarp concluded, ‘But why do you delay? Come, do what you will.’ Soldiers then grabbed him to nail him to a stake, but Polycarp stopped them: ‘Leave me as I am. For He who grants me to endure the fire will enable me also to remain on the pyre unmoved, without the security you desire from nails.’ He prayed aloud, the fire was lit, and his flesh was consumed. FIRST THOUGHTS

And now, finally, to the really good stuff: What’s it like to ‘Become Philadelphian.’ So much to say here, beloved, about what I consider to be the Biblical Ideal that Jesus Christ holds up to us to Emulate. And it can become as easy as breathing, depending on this:

Our Will, our Deepest Desire to become this sort of Christian.

But before we get to that ‘Good Stuff’ to make lots of John Lewis’ ‘Good Trouble’ along the way, we must first turn to its Polar and Moral Opposite, who have effectively become: ‘The Anti-Philadelphians,’ those who are Destined, by their willful Choice, to most assuredly become Servants of Antichrist in this very Hour.

THE LAODICEANS

A strong case can be made that the Last Days Church in America will be Laodicean in nature. For those of you who are not familiar with this sort of Congregation, here is the Biblical Profile of it, in the Words of the Messiah Himself.

Prepare yourselves for a rough ride in this stinging Rebuke of a Church whose Conduct God Hates – and yes, that is precisely the correct term – Hates. You will see why below.

“And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God:I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.’” – REVELATION 3:14-18, NKJV

LUKEWARM. This core indictment comes from the Greek term, ‘Chliaros’ [χλιαρός], meaning: “Tepid [as with timid]; metaphorically, of the condition of a soul wretchedly fluctuating between a torpor and a fervor of love, Revelation 3:16; moderate or moderately warm; not ardent; not zealous; cool; indifferent; as lukewarm obedience; lukewarm patriots.”

WRETCHED. This next characteristic is from the word, ‘Talaipóros’ [ταλαίπωρος]: “Distressed, miserable; Usage: afflicted, miserable [as in ‘deplorable’]; beaten down from severe strain [or sustained disobedience]; enduring toils and troubles; having to endure many trials; sunk into deep affliction or distress, either from want, anxiety, grief [or rebellion]; despicable; hatefully vile and contemptible.”

MISERABLE. From the similar idea found in this word, ‘Eleeinos’ [ἐλεεινό]: “Pitiable, wretched; in great need of mercy (because desperate); immediate regard for the consequence of (serious) sins; therefore full of misery; being in a pitiable state of distress or unhappiness (as from want or shame); of wretched character or quality; contemptible; very unhappy, causing much unhappiness.”

POOR. Taken from the Greek, ‘Ptóchos’ [πτωχός]: “Of one who crouches and cowers, hence) beggarly, poor, destitute, spiritually poor, either in a good sense (humble devout persons) or bad; deeply destitute [spiritually or physically]; to be thoroughly frightened, to cower down or hide oneself for fear; hence, πτωχός properly, one who slinks and crouches), often involving the idea of roving about in wretchedness; fallen, helpless, needs lifting up.”

BLIND. Here the largely spiritual idea is translated from, ‘Tuphlos’ [τυφλός]: “Sightless, physically, mentally (or spiritually);destitute of the sense of seeing, either by natural defect, or by deprivation; not having sight; not having the faculty of discernment; destitute of intellectual light; unable to understand or judge; ignorant; as authors are blind to their own defects; heedless; inconsiderate; undeliberating; in Scripture, blind implies not only want of discernment, but moral depravity.”

NAKED. Here we have another largely symbolic or spiritual reference, from the Greek, ‘Gumnos’ [γυμνός]: “Poorly clothed; rarely: stark-naked; generally: wearing only the under-garment; bare, open, manifest; mere; open, laid bare; bereft of spiritual clothing; uncovered or separated from the imputed righteousness of God through obedience; unarmed; defenseless; open; exposed; having no means of defense or protection against an enemy’s attack, or against other injury.”

VOMIT OUT. In the most distressing of Christ’s Rebukes here, is the idea of being “Vomited out of His mouth,” meaning Rejected from the Covenant. From the word, ‘Emeó’ [ἐμέω]: “Properly, vomit; (figuratively) repulsed, showing utter rejection (desiring total separation); ‘to reject with extreme disgust;’ to eject with violence from any hollow place; to disgorge or spew violently.”

REBELLION. Here we have what I consider to be the Root System of the Last Days of the Apostate Church, that will follow anything or anyone give her blatant Disregard for Truth in the form of the Sacred Teachings of Scripture – much of which I have quoted in the Study today.

But let’s consider one Expert’s hard-hitting analysis of this powerful passage.

COMMENTARY. “The Church at Laodicea was neither cold nor hot. It was sickeningly Lukewarm. The Lord would have preferred it to have been extreme in its Indifference or its Zeal. But no – it was Lukewarm enough to Deceive people into thinking that it was a Church of God, and so disgustingly Lukewarm about Divine Things as to nauseate the Most High. Furthermore, the Church was characterized by Pride, Ignorance, Self-sufficiency, and Complacency.” – WILLIAM MACDONALD, ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 2360; edited

IMPLICATIONS. Two towering extensions of this Teaching from the Messiah strike us with blunt force effect. Consider, for example what this means for this church.

CHURCH OF ANTICHRIST. Given this church’s staggering Departure from the Doctrines of the Church, from what the Founders and Framers would have called, ‘True Religion,’ they are easy prey for the forces of Antichrist. Indeed, the entire Interfaith Movement spearheaded by Pope Francis, Jared Kushner, and UAE Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed el-Tayeb in the Abraham Faith Initiatives precedent to the Abraham Accord Peace Deal with Israel, is Dark Harbinger of the construction of the False Church of the Last Days. – cf. CHRIST’S DISAVOWEL. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. Many will say to Me on that day [when I judge them], ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, and driven out demons in Your name, and done many miracles in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them publicly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me [you are banished from My presence], you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].’” – MATTHEW 7:21-23, AMP

MY MISSION. This is why I push so hard, raise my voice and even pump the air with my fist on occasion: To Awaken a Sleeping Church! This is precisely what the King meant by the word, “Vomit.” As Dietrich Bonhoeffer said in his brilliant tome, ‘The Cost of Discipleship’:

‘Jesus means business!’ – 1937, p. 79

THE HOPE. As is His Character, however, He offers even to this seditious body One Last – and I do mean, ‘Last’ – Opportunity for Restoration.

“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” – REVELATION 3:18-20, NKJV

TESTED BY FIRE. “Tested by fire simply means refining, and refining means removing what isn’t faith, not altering the faith itself. It’s a simple fact that gold can be subjected to extreme temperatures and literally melted over and over again without losing its nature. The same is true for faith. Only faith tested by fire is genuine faith.” – EDITORS, ‘Truth Immutable,’ Ret. November 14, 2020; edited

THE POINT. Time for Religious Pretention in the Forms of posing, nominalism, social club faith, surface scratch spirituality is OVER for those who would Desire to Remain True. So let’s finally get this Right, beloved, while Daylight is still present, however dwindling.

BECOMING PHILADEPHIANS

“I know your deeds. See, I have set before you an open door which no one is able to shut, for you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not renounced or denied My name…Because you have kept the word of My endurance [My command to persevere], I will keep you [safe] from the hour of trial, that hour which is about to come on the whole [inhabited] world, to test those who live on the earth.” – REVELATION 3:8,10, AMP

BACKGROUND. “The Seven Churches addressed were actually churches in the cities mentioned. They are representative of all churches of that time, as well as Churches in subsequent generations…with ongoing application to all local churches throughout Church History, giving discernment as to where they stand spiritually before the Lord; and with ongoing personal application, exhorting the individual to be an Overcomer.

The Structure of the Letters falls into a Sevenfold Pattern: 1) A ‘Commission’ to the messenger of the church named; 2) A ‘Character’ description of Christ; 3) A ‘Commendation,’ with the exceptions of Sardis and Laodicea; 4) A ‘Censure,’ with the exceptions of Smyrna and Philadelphia; 5) A ‘Correction’ with the various imperatives; 6) A ‘Challenge’ repeated seven times. Beginning with the Fourth Letter [Thyatira, the ‘Corrupt Church’], the Challenge follows the Covenant of Promise; 7) A ‘Covenant Promise,’ which is the facet of Christ Himself and is a gift to every member of the Body of Christ.” – DR. JACK HAYFORD, Executive Editor, ‘New Spirit Filled Life Bible,’ 2002, p. 1818; edited

FOUR CHARACTERISTICS. Now here is the very meat of our Study today – a specification of the very Beliefs and Conduct of this congregation that produced the Messiah’s highest possible Commendations to any of the Seven Churches.

Here is the Essence, therefore, of what it takes to Become a Philadelphian for these Last Days.

A LITTLE POWER. The key term in the Greek here is, ‘Dunamis’ [δύναμις], reminiscent of the word, “dynamite,” meaning: “Miraculous (inherent) power, might, strength; (a) physical power, force, might, ability, efficacy, energy, meaning (b) plural: powerful deeds, deeds showing (physical) power, marvelous works; power though God’s Spirit; thus, to have great [supernatural] ability; able to exercise authority and dominion over the Satan’s kingdom.”

KEPT MY WORD. Here we have a vital and absolute Key Characteristic for the sorts of tests we shall face in the Last Days. From the Greek, ‘Téreó’ [τηρέω]: “To guard, observe, watch over (God’s Words of Truth); properly, maintain (preserve); (figuratively) spiritually guard (watch), keep intact; to serve as a watcher; to preserve as opposed to leaving (one’s post; cf. Jude 1:6); to observe [God’s] commands, ordinances, traditions, Law.”

NOT DENIED MY NAME. Another vital strength of this Church, from the Greek, ‘Arneomai’ [ἀρνέομαι], which means: “Properly, to renounce (refuse); hence, contradict, refuse to affirm or to confess (identify with); disown (repudiate); abnegate, abjure; disavow; to claim not to know or recognize Him; includes the idea of falsehood or contradiction of one’s beliefs; to confess falsely; to disclaim; to reject; as a title or claim; to refuse to own or acknowledge as belonging to.”

HAVE ENDURED. A personally inspired word for me (the Bathroom Mirror Story, 1988), the term is taken from the Greek, ‘Hupomoné’ [ὑπομονή], rendered as: “A remaining behind, a patient enduring; properly, remaining under, endurance; steadfastness, especially as God enables the believer to ‘remain (endure) under’ the challenges He allots in life; steadfastness constancy; associated with cheerful patience and hope, referring to the quality that does not surrender to circumstances or succumb under trial.”

HEROES. Noah Webster (1828) and his later contemporaries together Define this very special term this way: “A man of distinguished valor, intrepidity or enterprise in danger, as a hero in arms; a great, illustrious or extraordinary person, as a hero in learning; a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble; a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal.”

These then constitute the Heroes of the Faith, their names to be added to the Hall of Faith Heroes of Antiquity, which include such figures as: Abel, and Abraham, then Moses, and Gideon and Barak and Samson and David and Samuel and all the Prophets. And after them, all the Heroic Martyrs to the Cause of Jesus Christ over the long and often bloody centuries.

And an entire Pantheon of Unknown Soldiers of the Cross who lived and fought and died in undeserved ignominy and painful humiliation, but who shall yet Rise to Glorious Reward.

So let’s look at just what Messiah Promises to this Special Church.

DIVINE REWARD TO PHILADELPHIANS

As concisely as Jesus defined the Characteristics of The Philadelphians, which by the way clearly constitutes The Faithful Remnant Church for these Last Times, He also explicitly described their Reward, in FOUR DECLARATIONS.

OPEN DOOR “OF FAVOR.” Rather than do the Word-Study here, I remind you of the Stranger who came to me on Thursday, October 22 and stood quietly by as I packed my books. I inquired of him politely, and the Stranger said: “I came to open the door for you.” “Okay, thank you.” I replied, somewhat bemused, as he stood holding the door open for me. Then as I left, he turned to me and said: “God is going to Open a Door of Favor for you.” The word, “Favor” being defined by Noah Webster as, “Kindness, Grace, Vindication,” which by the Scripture, “no one can shut.” – Revelation 6:8

OPPONENTS HUMBLED. While the language in Verse 9 is strong (“worship before your feet”), the real meaning here is, by the Commentaries, a reference to the humbling, punishment and humiliation of your enemies and opponents. If that sounds harsh, you must remember that God hates bullying and opposition of those who are standing for righteousness, and most especially, when the bullies claim to be His disciples. Especially then. MacDonald writes in this regard: “Those who claimed to be God’s chosen people [whether Jew or Christian], though actually a ‘Synagogue of Satan,’ would be forced to admit that the despised Christians were actually the chosen flock.” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 2359; edited

KEPT ‘FROM’ THE GREAT TRIBULATION. I expect this will wrinkle some eyebrows, but to me the Text is crystal clear. Listen to Dallas Theological Seminary trained, DR. GRANT C. RICHISON, whose interpretation is the most accurate, in my studied view, among many. “The ‘Hour of Trial’ is the Trial of Tribulation (Chapters 6-19). There is one word in Greek for the English words ‘keep’ and ‘from.’ It is a compound word composed of both terms: ‘keep’ and ‘out of.’ The word ‘from’ [literally, out of] indicates that this church will not even enter the Tribulation Period. This is a guarding ‘from’ rather than a guarding ‘through.’ Those in the Tribulation will clearly go through this time of trouble (7:4). By inference, God must have Raptured the Church BEFORE the Hour of Trial. The point of the Tribulation is to get the attention of Israel that Jesus is the Messiah.” – ‘Bible Exposition Commentary,’ November 16, 1998; edited; also see Luke 21:36

ETERNAL HONOR. In Verse 12, the Lord bestows upon these the highest honor of becoming a “Pillar” in His Heavenly Temple. Defined by the Greek word, ‘Stulos’ [στῦλος]: “Literally, “a support column; ‘I will assign him a firm and abiding place in the everlasting Kingdom of God.’” MacDonald writes: “A pillar in the inner sanctuary of God [carrying] the thought of strength, honor and permanent security…safety and joy. The Overcomer will have Three Names written on him: The Name of God; the Name of the New Jerusalem; and the New Name of the Lord Jesus. He will be thus Identified [forever] as belonging to all three.” – 1995, p. 2359; edited

IN SUM. The Faithful Remnant Church of Jesus Christ at the End of History will be constituted by those “who endured” the many Fiery Trials of the Period of “Birth Pangs,” described in great detail in the Parallel passages in Matthew 24:1-8, and Revelation 6:1-11.

They shall have therefore passed through the First Five Seals of REVELATION CHAPTER 6.

ADVENT OF ANTICHRIST. And I looked, and saw there a white horse whose rider carried a bow. And a crown was given him, and he rode forth conquering and to conquer.” – 6:2

WORLD WARS. “And another horse came out, flaming red. And its rider was empowered to take the peace from the earth, so that men slaughtered one another; and he was given a huge sword.” – 6:4

ECONOMIC SCARCITY. “And I heard what seemed to be a voice from the midst of the four living creatures, saying, A quart of wheat for a denarius [a whole day’s wages], and three quarts of barley for a denarius; but do not harm the oil and the wine!” – 6:6

PESTILENCE AND DEATH. “So I looked, and behold, an ashy pale horse [black and blue as if made so by bruising], and its rider’s name was Death, and Hades (the realm of the dead) followed him closely. And they were given authority and power over a fourth part of the earth to kill with the sword and with famine and with plague (pestilence, disease) and with wild beasts of the earth.” – 6:8

LIMITED MARTYRDOM. “When the Lamb broke open the fifth seal, I saw at the foot of the altar the souls of those whose lives had been sacrificed for [adhering to] the Word of God and for the testimony they had borne.” – 6:9

THE SIXTH SEAL RAPTURE. “I looked when He (the Lamb) broke open the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth [made] of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree shedding its late [summer] figs when shaken by a strong wind. The sky was split [separated from the land] and rolled up like a scroll, and every mountain and island were dislodged and moved out of their places. Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the military commanders and the wealthy and the strong and everyone, [whether] slave or free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains;and they called to the mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne, and from the [righteous] wrath and indignation of the Lamb;for the great day of their wrath and vengeance and retribution has come, and who is able to [face God and] stand [before the wrath of the Lamb]?’” – 6:12-17

DR. KELLY COMMENTS. “It is therefore the Proposal of this work, along with two commentaries that came before my own, that the Rapture of the Church of Jesus Christ takes place on ‘The Day of the Lord,’ somewhere just prior to or between the onset of God’s Wrath in the Sixth Seal, and the commencing of the Trumpet Judgments following the opening of the Seventh Seal…I take the unique position that just before, perhaps only a microsecond before the appearance of the Wrath of God on the earth, indeed, ‘in the twinkling of an eye’ (1 Cor. 15:52), He literally, visibly, and some would say, ‘Catastrophically’ Rescues all [true] followers of Christ in a massive Upsweep into the clouds that leaves the rapidly disintegrating world order behind.” – ‘The Sixth Seal: A Pre-Wrath Commentary on the End of History as We Know It,’ 2017, pp. 115-116; edited

Selah. Selah.

LAST THOUGHTS

All these things are come near to us now, beloved, as we gaze toward the End of this Epic Year, 2020. Somehow, I sense that we are simultaneously coming to the Finish of something, while at the same time the Lord is about to burst upon the world scene, ‘A New Thing.’

“Do not [earnestly] remember the former things; neither consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs forth; do you not perceive and know it and will you not give heed to it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” – ISAIAH 43:18-19, AMPC

OUR FINEST HOUR. While this has been such a harsh time for so many, and the Plagues and Judgments and Perils continue even as I type these words, and yet, and yet. I sense, for the True Church, that ‘Finest Hour’ I have been mentioning increasingly to you.

And here’s why, beloved, in something I raised in just the last Teaching: Jesus is

Returning for a Spotless Bride, which explains a good deal of the scraping and

pruning and cleansing and spiritual bone-rattling currently going on in each of our scruffy, less than ideal lives.

“So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, That He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such things [that she might be holy and faultless].” – EPHESIANS 5:26-27, AMPC

This in priceless and necessary Preparation for our Final Missions, and then, to Meet the Bridegroom in the air. I love the Commentary offered below to beautifully expand on this Idea.

THE COMMENTARY. “The visible Church now contains clean and unclean together, like Noah’s ark; like the wedding room which contained some that had, and others that had not, the Wedding Garment (Matthew 22:10-14; compare 2 Timothy 2:20); or as the good and bad fish are taken in the same net because it cannot discern the bad from the good, the fishermen being unable to know what kind of fish the nets have taken under the waves. Still the Church is termed ‘holy’ in the Creed, in reference to her ideal and ultimate destination. When the Bridegroom comes, the Bride shall be presented to Him wholly without spot, the evil being cut off from the body for ever (Matthew 13:47-50). Not that there are two churches, one with bad and good intermingled, another in which there are good alone; but one and the same Church in relation to different times, now with good and evil together, hereafter with Good Alone [Pearson].” – R. So does the Bridegroom intensify and accelerate His Great Sifting: “His winnowing fan (shovel, fork) is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out and clean His threshing floor and gather and store His wheat in His barn, but the chaff He will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.” – MATTHEW 3:12, AMPC

THE QUESTION. And when He Returns, beloved, how shall He find us doing – Well or Ill? Shall we be found Faithful and Joyful, with persecutions, or shall we be Ashamed at His Coming, alive to the World but Estranged from Him?

I should like to conclude with a Scripture that I learnt as a wee lad in my green years with Christ. Heard it possibly for the first time in the ebb and flow and fury of my early times with Yeshua ben David, who again Instructs His Philadelphians as His champions for this Hour.

FINAL INSTRUCTION. “But be on guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down and depressed with the giddiness of debauchery and the nausea of self-indulgence and the worldly worries of life, and then that day [when the Messiah returns] will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth. But keep alert at all times [be attentive and ready], praying that you may have the strength and ability [to be found worthy and] to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man [at His coming].” – LUKE 21:34-36

Because if not, there is soon coming a Very Loud Voice whose blast shall Shatter the very edges of Time and Space.
