FIRST THOUGHTS

It is nearly impossible to approach this last subject with anything less than a sense of Awe. What I am attempting here is to present, in 5,000 words or less, the PATH OF MASTERY through the most difficult time in memory, in the History of this Nation and her people.

No pressure.

Thankfully, I am not left to my own resources, which on my best day might get you a cup of coffee and a sandwich at your favorite eatery. No, we have Hashem. We have the Decalogue. We have the Spirit of God. We have, most immediately and joyfully, the soon coming Jewish Messiah, the very Light of the entire World.

But Time is growing short, beloved, it truly is.

“So Jesus said to them, ‘You will have the Light only a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light [keep on living by it], so that darkness may not overtake and overcome you. He who walks about in the dark does not know where he goes [he is drifting].’” – JOHN 12:35, AMPC

So do we set out on the most vital installment of this Series: “Mastering the Times.” Buried deep in its Doctrinal soil is the Prime Directive for all Mankind that the Answer – the only Path to such Mastery, is to look to ‘the Master of the House,’ who holds the Keys to all its rooms.

THE FOUNDATION: WISDOM

Of all the gifts and tools we must possess and deploy in this massive, world wide Crisis, Wisdom is inarguably first and foremost. Our friend NOAH WEBSTER again, provides a basic Definition.

“The right use or exercise of Knowledge; the choice of laudable ends, and of the best means to accomplish them. This is Wisdom in act, effect, or practice. If Wisdom is to be considered as a faculty of the mind, it is the faculty of discerning or judging what is most just, proper and useful, and if it is to be considered as an acquirement, it is the knowledge and use of what is best, most just, most proper, most conducive to prosperity or happiness.

Wisdom in the first sense, or ‘Practical Wisdom,’ is nearly synonymous with Discretion. It differs somewhat from prudence, in this respect; prudence is the exercise of Sound Judgment in avoiding evils; Wisdom is the exercise of sound judgment either in avoiding evils or attempting good. Prudence then is a species, of which Wisdom is the genus.” – ‘American Dictionary of the English Language,’ 1828; edited

BOTTOM LINE: Wisdom is the ability to ‘MAKE RIGHT CHOICES,’ and to know what to actually DO, founded in Biblical morality, producing beneficial consequences. – I kind of just made that up, based on the pertinent authoritative texts.

The Question that begs immediately from this, and of which most of you are already aware, is the SOURCE OF WISDOM – Where do I find such a Gift? The Scriptures of course are lucid in this vital matter.

“The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of wisdom [its starting point and its essence], And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding and spiritual insight.” – PROVERBS 9:10, AMP

FEAR OF GOD. From the Hebrew root word, ‘Yirah’ [יִרְאָה]: ‘Terror, reverence, awe, piety, true religion; it involves departing from evil, without which wisdom cannot be conferred, thus blocking out the ability for discernment and prudent choices; it recognizes that God as all-powerful, reflected in both attitude and practical conduct; as a consequences, fully understanding that He rewards good and punishes wickedness; this predated the Golden Rule, on which that later Principle rests.’

KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY ONE. The term here is the Hebrew, ‘Daath’ [דַּעַת]: “Insight, intelligence, understanding, wisdom, cunning; discernment; the contemplative perception of a wise man; especially knowledge with a moral quality; truth; issues from a proper relationship between God and man who truly obeys Him; it essentially refers to a deeply held moral cogntion.”

UNDERSTANDING. From the word, ‘Binah’ [בִּינָה]: “Insight, prudence, intelligence; clear consideration; keen understanding with predictive ability to know what will occur as a result of such insight; the faculty of the human mind by which it apprehends the real state of things presented to it, or by which it receives or comprehends the ideas which others express and intend to communicate.”

THE KEY. True Wisdom further acknowledges that we are all ACCOUNTABLE TO GOD for our thoughts and actions – a reality that is breathlessly absent in American culture and Church life today. By every assessment, both scientific and theological, it is simply not there, beloved. I

It has vanished, significantly, from both Church and State.

COMMENTARY. “The very first, and, indeed, the Principal Thing which is to be instilled into all men’s minds, (without which they will make no progress in true Wisdom,) is a serious sense of the Divine Majesty, and ‘an awful regard toward Him.’ And next, that no knowledge deserves the name of understanding but that which disposes us to devote ourselves, in Holy Obedience, to God; or the knowledge and practice of True Religion, and the duties of it…’If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself —Thou dost not profit Me, but thyself by thy wisdom. I advise thee for thine own good. But if thou scornest — If thou despisest and deridest the Advice which I give thee, thou alone shalt bear it — The blame and mischief of it will fall wholly upon thee, not upon Me, or my Word, or ministers, who have warned thee.” – JOSEPH BENSON, ‘Critical Notes on the Holy Bible,’ 5 vols., 1811-1818; edited

Do you hear it, beloved? Do you grasp the, ‘SOBRIETY’ of it all? Yes, yes, the American Church has become something so much less than this. In my estimation,

‘A Playground’ rather than ‘Sacred Ground’ – A House of Pretend, rather than a House of real Wisdom, true Worship, genuine Fellowship, Spiritual Refreshment, and Training for Battle.

This in contrast to the insipid ‘Social Club’ Model of American Christianity that has sprung up everywhere.

THE CALL TO MATURITY

I have been arguing that the American Church is guilty of ‘Fudging Doctrine,’ in the interests of making it more ‘Seeker Friendly,’ perhaps the most insidious attack on God’s Truth in memory. Its Goal: To Dilute or ‘water down’ the Scriptures to serve them up, in the spirit of Mary Poppins, with a “spoonfuls of sugar to help the Medicine go down.”

The widely popular song, ‘Shallow’ (2018), for example, is perhaps Ensign to such a culture wide phenomenon, the lyrics of which are so vacuous, so shamelessly juvenile, that I dare not publish them here. Yet America loves it.

Look them up to see what I mean.

THE EVIDENCE. Here is one thoughtful commentary on the Consequences of our Shallowness, that captures what the World now thinks of us. Rightly titled, “A Lament for the American Church and Her Leaders.”

“Jerry Falwell, Jr. Bill Hybels. James MacDonald. Joshua Harris. Ted Haggard. Jimmy Swaggart. Jim and Tammy Bakker. Tullian Tchividjian (Billy Graham’s grandson). These are just a few of the more well-known, even celebrity type, Evangelical Christian Leaders who have fallen into scandal and disgrace in recent times. To be clear, this is not to say any of these leaders’ stories are or were over, but simply to note that each of these leaders had some major scandal exposed that they tried to keep secret. There are also of course many others, who have become so ‘Wedded to Politics’ that they have destroyed their Prophetic Witness too.

But in the days of Swaggart and Bakker, these scandals shocked and rocked the Christian community. In recent years however, the shock is not as great as it once was. Instead, it is more of an attitude of ‘There goes another one’ and ‘Who will be next?’ What in the world is happening? What has become of the American Church and her leaders?

On one level, I believe this is God’s Purifying Judgment on the Church. All these leaders once spoke out against sin and immorality; while falling into Temptation and discrepancy of morals (Money, Sex, Power). But they are Icons that represent the sad state of God’s people. American Evangelicalism reeks of hypocrisy, politics, culture wars, shallowness, celebrity culture, and success defined by the American Dream more than the Gospel of Jesus Christ and faithful obedience to Him.

Cleansing is needed. Soul-searching humility and godly repentance are sorely needed. Leadership, based on integrity, character, and purity of heart, not charisma, personality, and celebrity power is desperately needed.” – BEN FOLEY, August 24, 2020; edited

TRUMP’S CHRISTIANITY. While not the Cause of all this Degradation, President Trump (and a Complicit Church), who many regard as ‘the Gas Lighter-in-Chief,’ often serves as Satan’s Trigger Man, to incite us toward our lower angels (demons).

In just 1,335 days, clearly a record of some sort.

THE ROAD BACK?

I purposely inserted a strategic Question Mark at the end of that subhead. Why? Because I am not at all convinced that enough Church Leaders are at all interested in following Godly Counsel in this hour. I’m not, having no reason to believe otherwise.

To speak out directly, naming names, and with boldness.

WHEAT AND CHAFF. But so long as God is in the Fight, we could, possibly, however remotely, see a Turn Around, a ‘Revival’ if you will. But not in the Culture. No, no. In the Church! It must begin there, or not at all.

Here’s a reminder as to why this is so.

“For the time [has arrived] for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will [be] the end of those who do not respect or believe or obey the good news (the Gospel) of God?” – 1 PETER 4:17, AMPC

THE TIMES. It has already begun, beloved, as surely as I am typing these words you are reading. It is already here, Pastors. The whir of His Great Threshing Fan has already started to cleave the very air we now breathe.

Matthew prophetically recorded it.

“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat (believers) into His barn (kingdom), but He will burn up the chaff (the unrepentant) with unquenchable fire.” – MATTHEW 3:12, AMP

This is where we are, beloved of God. So now to the hard work of putting on greater understanding of what lies before us, ‘IF’ (that Great Conditional of God), we are to ‘Return to our True Founder’ in the days ahead. Or not.

THE REQUIREMENTS. One of my favorite Scriptures over the centuries I have walked this troubled earth is found in Paul’s Letter to Ephesus. Listen to its clarion clear, Upward Call to us all, starting with Church leaders and pastors.

This Call to Obedience is unmistakable in the context of Today’s Anemic Churches.

“So then, we may no longer be children, tossed [like ships] to and fro between chance gusts of teaching and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine, [the prey of] the cunning and cleverness of unscrupulous men, [gamblers engaged] in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead. Rather, let our lives lovingly express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us GROW UP in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).” – EPHESIANS 4:14-15, AMPC; emphasis added

NO LONGER CHILDREN. From the Greek, ‘Népios’ [νήπιος], a term reserved for: “An infant, a simple-minded or immature person; unlearned, unenlightened; a child, not yet able to [think] or speak plainly; a babe in ignorance and simplicity; a person weak in faith; childish, untaught, unskilled [in dealing with life].”

GROW UP! I purposely added the exclamation, to make the point a Command of God. From the Greek term, ‘Auxanó’ [αὐξάνω]: “To enlarge, increase; to augment, become greater; is key to authentic discipleship. Indeed, the Lord requires non-stop progress (development) in the life of faith; to advance; to improve; to make progress; as, to grow in grace, in knowledge, in piety.”

SPEAK TRUTH. From the word, ‘Alétheuó’ [ἀληθεύω]: “To be true in doctrine and profession; to tell of that which is real, genuine, actual, no counterfeit, and to act as such [as with integrity of character]; also, to make it one’s business to express the reality of love and not to feign it; literally, ‘to truth;’ includes Spirit-led confrontation where it is vital to tell the truth so others can live in God’s reality rather than personal illusion.”

COMMENTARY. “The last two verses in the paragraph [vv. 14-15] describe the proper process of Growth in the Body of Christ. First, there is the necessity of Doctrinal Adherence; but ‘Speaking the Truth’…there can be no compromise as to the Fundamentals of the Faith. Second, there must be a Right Spirit: ‘But, speaking the truth in love.’ If it is spoken in any other way, the result is a one-sided testimony…Then, as the Gifts equip the saints, and as the saints engage in active [aggressive] service, they ‘Grow Up in all things into Christ.’ Christ is the aim and object of their growth, and the sphere of growth is ‘in all things.’ In every area of their lives they become more like Him.” – WILLIAM MACDONALD, ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, pp. 1936-1937; edited

What is described here is a far cry from what I call, the ‘Conditional Christians’ we currently find in most churches in America. I see us as overwhelmingly Lukewarm to or, again, woefully Shallow concerning the Core Doctrines of the Faith, indifferent to or afraid of the demands for Suffering and Resisting the World Spirit as a Countercultural Soldier of Christ.

Rather have we become ‘Redefined’ by the Spirit and Politics of the Age, and our reed thin testimony now rings hollow and empty.

WARRIORS FOR CHRIST

What God therefore seeks today, more than any other priority I can think of for His Bride, are those obedient, loving and courageous SOLDIERS willing to ‘go to the wall’ for Him. Even more, I love the term, “Warrior,” since it conveys a greater Intrepidity that the Last Times will surely require of us.

A somewhat anonymous Christian graphic novelist defined it in this rather compelling manner.

“A Christian Warrior is someone who is not afraid to pick up their Cross and follow Christ. They know that to live is Christ, and to die is gain, and they are willing to give what they cannot keep to gain what they cannot lose. They live by ‘The [Heavenly] Vision.’ They wake up every morning prepared for Battle, waging the War against sin and death so that all might come to life in Christ. They are fearless. Unafraid, they boldly face persecution, ridicule, and even torture with unwavering e
Their battles are often silent. Their victories go unnoticed by the world. They fight not against people, but against sin. They do not strive for earthly treasure, but for Heavenly rewards. They wield the weapons of Truth, Prayer, and Love.” – WARRIOR4JAH, July 24, 2006; edited

A FAITHFUL REMNANT. And, I propose, they are in the distinct Minority, even as Gideon’s ‘mighty men of valor,’ numbered only 300 of the larger group of 32,000 original volunteers. – cf. Judges 7:7

Because of my love for statistics, I calculated that to be 9.375% of the original number of men. That enduring ‘Tenth,’ or Terebinth, that God always preserves for the real work of His Kingdom. – cf. Isaiah 6:13

Selah.

THE TEACHING

“But the end and culmination of all things has now come near; keep sound minded and self-restrained and alert therefore for [the practice of] prayer…Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.” – 1 PETER 4:7, 5:8; AMP

Please note one key term or phrase in this passage that I will key on and begin to close with, given its central importance. And I warn you – this will be hard for some of you to read.

SOBER OF MIND. From the Greek term, ‘Néphó’ [νήφω]: “To be sober, to abstain from wine; Usage: (lit: I am sober), I am calm (vigilant), circumspect; to be discreet, watchful; not intoxicated; (figuratively) free from illusion, i.e. from the intoxicating influences of sin (like the impact of selfish passion, greed, etc.); enabling one to be temperate (self-controlled); means to have “one’s wits (faculties) about them,” which is the opposite of being irrational; to be calm and collected in spirit; dispassionate.”

The Idea here is that we are to be Fully Alert: At our full strength, resolutely ‘at watch’ at all times, and readied for battle, thereby unshaken by some sudden emergency, should God or Circumstance require us to be of service.

In Sum: We need to be ‘All there, all the time,’ Watchmen on the Wall.

“I have set watchmen upon your walls, O Jerusalem, who will never hold their peace day or night; you who [are His servants and by your prayers] put the Lord in remembrance [of His promises], keep not silence.” – ISAIAH 62:6, AMPC

And “keep not silence.” Selah.

CASE STUDY 1: CAPT. SULLY. “US Airways flight 1549, also called ‘Miracle on the Hudson,’ flight of a passenger airliner that made an emergency landing in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Five people were seriously injured, but there were no fatalities.

The airplane, an Airbus A320 operated by US Airways, took off from LaGuardia at approximately 3:25 PM. It was destined for Charlotte, North Carolina. On board were 5 crew members, including Capt. Chesley (‘Sully’) Sullenberger III, and 150 passengers. About two minutes into the flight, the airplane flew into a flock of Canada geese. Both engines were severely damaged, causing an almost complete loss of thrust. Repeated attempts to restart the engines were unsuccessful.

Sullenberger notified LaGuardia’s air control that he was returning to the airport. However, as the plane continued to descend in a glide, Sullenberger believed that it would be unable to reach LaGuardia. An airport in New Jersey was also quickly ruled out. Shortly thereafter he notified air control that he was going to attempt a very risky and rare water landing, in the Hudson River. At approximately 3:29 PM, Sullenberger announced over the intercom ‘This is the captain. Brace for impact’…

In late October 2018, Sullenberger wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post ahead of the 2018 mid-term elections, calling on Americans to ‘Vote for leaders who are committed to the values that will unite and protect us,’ who would show ‘Moral Compass…competence, integrity, and concern for the greater good.’ In a subsequent interview with Lawrence O’Donnell, Sullenberger elaborated his position, discussing his belief that voters should act as a check and balance in a partisan government.” – AMY TIKKANEN, “US Airways Flight 1549,” ‘Britannica,’ January 8, 2020; EDITORS, “Chesley Sullenberger,” ‘Wikipedia,’ October 12, 2020; edited

So now let me turn to how it is NOT to be done, in a much less demanding situation.

CASE STUDY 2: LINDA FORD. I have related this tale before, but it is fitting to our present discussion. In late 1980, I was resting at my sister’s home, swilling a few glasses of red wine. Not enough to be drunk, but, you know, slightly ‘buzzed.’ Linda Ford, a young friend at the time suffering from bulimia, called me quite distraught, asking if she could come for prayer. I said, “Of course!”

She drives up in her little blue 1979 or so Volkswagen Beetle, comes to a stop and opens the door to the curb (she parked on the wrong side of the street, suited to the emergency). I lean in, placing my hand on her shoulder and begin to pray. Next thing I know, I am knocked back on my hind parts on the sidewalk, and I blurted out, “What the heck, Linda!”

Her Reply, forever engraved in my spirit: “I don’t need some wino to pray for me, Cliff! I can do it better myself!” Then she drove off, actually laying a bit of rubber from that 53 BHP power plant, being so angry with me.

LESSONS. These Case Studies pretty much teach themselves. ‘SULLY’ was the picture of sterling character, brilliant skill, bravery, and resolute calm under life-threatening conditions. Though his heart rate was likely elevated (he is human) and voice commands at times expressive of some alarm, he was fully in control – as much as any mortal could have been in such dire circumstances.

The wine-bibbing DR. K, however, deciding in his first months of Christianity to hold onto his “happy juice,” found out the hard way that my half-hearted approach to the Faith would never, ever wash in an emergency.

That was 1980, 40 years ago.

THE RECKONING. Each of us will continue to have God’s Wakeup Calls sent to us in the days just ahead, as He identifies weak spots in our walk that need shoring up, or, more often, ‘Letting go.’ As with our little pet idols.

Being ‘Sober of Mind,’ therefore, means different things to different people. But most of all, it means ‘Being Ready,’ at any time, Fully Prepared to lend yourself to Rescue, to Encouragement, to Provision, to Prayer, undergirded and led by an unfettered, clear-minded Wisdom to handle the crisis.

WISDOM FOR LEADERS. An ancient Proverb speaks to the solemn Call of a Leader, as example – and, what I consider the proper use of wine and strong drink.

“It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to desire strong drink, lest they drink and forget the law and what it decrees, and pervert the justice due any of the afflicted. Give strong drink [as medicine] to him who is ready to pass away, and wine to him in bitter distress of heart.” – PROVERBS 31:4-6, AMPC

Can you not hear and see ‘Wisdom’ here, beloved? Not so much some arcane, legalistic prohibition as much as a call to by our King to:

“Come up higher! I have so much more for you, ‘Up here,’ where I dwell!”

CASE STUDY 3: DANIEL & FAHAD. I am warmly reminded of this great Life Lesson God branded me with, not long after The Linda Ford episode. Suzie and I were preparing, in 1982 as I recall, to have dinner with a then-student of mine from Saudi Arabia, Fahad Maleki and his live-in Western girlfriend, who I had witnessed to a bit.

It is important to note that Fahad’s father served in the Court of the Arabian king. You’ll see why in a minute.

While my wife was getting ready, I was waiting somewhat anxiously, in my study. In a few minutes, I sensed ‘Something’ was about to take place. I prayed to ask God what the heck was going on. Then ‘The Voice’ came gently to me, saying this:

“I have made it possible for you to never drink alcohol again, as you have asked. Just step over the line.”

As I trembled a bit at this as a still-new believer, I said in reply: “Lord! If this is You speaking to my addiction, I will open the Bible right now, and if it speaks a thing about alcohol, I am done with it forever!”

I knelt by my small couch, nervously opened up The Book of books, that was already highlighted and marked to this formidable passage:

“But Daniel determined in his heart that he would not defile himself by [eating his portion of] the king’s rich and dainty food or by [drinking] the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might [be allowed] not to defile himself.” – DANIEL 1:8, AMPC

THE CONSEQUENCE. Having accepted God’s Offer, I was soon swept away to Regent University in 1983, appointed Founding Director of their Public Affairs Journalism Program nine months later.

And the rest, as they say, is an almost light speed Ride with the King, triumphs, downfalls, fiery trials and all, to this present Place and Moment, again, some 40 years later. It has been hard, and exhilarating.

LAST THOUGHTS

THE PROMISE. To this powerful Promise from the Messiah to each one of us, especially for these Last Hours here on Earth.

“But be on guard, so that your hearts are not weighed down and depressed with the giddiness of debauchery and the nausea of self-indulgence and the worldly worries of life, and then that day [when the Messiah returns] will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who live on the face of all the earth.

But keep alert at all times [be attentive and ready], praying that you may have the strength and ability [to be found worthy and] to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man [at His coming].” – LUKE 21:34-36, AMP

I don’t know about you, but I take Him at His Word: To be found strong and worthy enough to ‘Escape all these things that are going to take place,’ and to Stand in His mighty Presence. An unmistakable reference to The Rapture of the Church.

Unmistakable.

BIBLICAL ‘SUCCESS.’ He embellishes this massive Promise with even more’ Power for the Hour,’ if you will. To all His obedient disciples and witnesses, this:

“For thus says the Lord: ‘Even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the prey of the terrible will be delivered; for I will contend with him who contends with you, and I will give safety to your children and ease them.’” – ISAIAH 49:25, AMPC

So to all who would Lead by Following, both saved and seeker, I say in the Words of that same fiery Prophet, who wrote this just a bit later in the Text:

“Wait and listen, everyone who is thirsty! Come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy [priceless, spiritual] wine and milk without money and without price [simply for the self-surrender that accepts the blessing].” – ISAIAH 55:1, AMPC

Do it, beloved, do it now, this very day!
