PART I: THE CALL OF THE CHURCH

FIRST THOUGHTS

Most Church-going folk in America today would admit, if they are honest, that something is very wrong in our Houses of Worship today. Sadly, however, most would come to that conclusion from two very Different Perspectives, based on one thing:

Politics.

THE NEW DIVIDE. Not based on doctrine or denomination so much anymore, but on the basis of what side of the Ideological Fence one happens to fall: Pro-Nationalist or Non-Nationalist, with upwards of 90 percent of the Church opting overtly for the former or remaining silent, leaving ‘The few and the stubborn,’ if you will, out in the Cold. 

Whether participants realize it or not, this has now become The Great American Divide that has forced itself upon the sacred Sanctuaries of the Christian Church – and Split them straight down the middle, in the stunning Disproportion proposed above – 90/10.

This Sea Change in American Political and Spiritual Life has taken place comparatively quickly, only since the Election of 2016, when Donald John Trump took the White House.

STAN GUTHRIE. Writing for ‘Breakpoint,’ Guthrie recently advanced the following Analysis of this powerful Trend (some say more like a Tsunami), brought to unprecedented fever pitch in these ever deepening Divisions we now see in America today.

“Back in 1969, Americans were told that ‘The personal is political.’ The slogan, popularized by Second-Wave Feminism, asserted that women’s unequal treatment was caused not by individual circumstances but by a ‘System’ of patriarchal oppression and power imbalances–and thus must be addressed politically. 

Fast forward to 2020, and now, according to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, ‘Everything is political.’ Tragically, especially in this cruel year of COVID-19, police brutality, and urban looting and riots, ‘Everything’ most definitely includes the Church.” – August 27, 2020; edited

ERRATUM. As well conceived as the piece was, it catastrophically missed ‘The Elephant in the Kitchen,’ as it were (play on words shameless intentional), by fielding and fumbling the worn-out old Shoe that the Church just needs to lovingly, ‘Accommodate our differences’ in order to heal the Rifts.

You know: Just join hands and sing, ‘Kumbaya, my Lord, won’t You Kumbaya?’ Pardon me while I default to my ancestral expletive: Oy vey!

THE BLINDNESS OF THE CHURCH

A number of us Christian ‘Outsiders’ (the 10% or so) have been writing for several years now about these Internecine Battles inside God’s houses, as being rooted in what we see as passive or active Ignorance of the true nature of America’s current Historic Struggle.

THE SPLIT. Here I refer to the raging conflict inside God’s houses between Christian Orthodoxy vs. the Religious Pragmatism that has coopted American Evangelicalism, including the Pentecostal and Charismatic wings of the Church. And by all accounts, the Conflict is Intensifying – Just as Jesus said it would in ‘The Last Times.’ – cf. Matthew 10:36, 24:10

MARK GALLI. In a reasonably temperate but nonetheless explosive Commentary for ‘Christianity Today,’ (he had to resign as a result of this essay), this former CT editor in chief, dared to uncover the festering wounds in today’s American Church, with ‘Butterfly Effects’ impacting not only politics, but churches, social networks, families, business establishments, the economy, and even medical science. 

All of which serves as powerful underscore to Paul Krugman’s prophetic narrative:

‘Everything is political’ now. Everything. Absolutely everything. 

Galli thus offers this.

“In our Founding Documents, Billy Graham explains that Christianity Today will help Evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their Faith. The Impeachment of Donald Trump is a significant event in the story of our Republic. It requires comment. The typical CT approach is to ‘stay above the fray’ and allow Christians with different political convictions to make their arguments in the public square, to encourage all to pursue justice according to their convictions and treat their political opposition as charitably as possible…

That said, we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear—always, as Graham encouraged us, doing so with both Conviction and Love. We love and pray for our president, as we love and pray for leaders (as well as ordinary citizens) on both sides of the political aisle…

To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of Gross Immorality and Ethical Incompetence. And just when we think it’s time to push all our chips to the center of the table, that’s when the whole game will come crashing down. It will crash down on the Reputation of Evangelical Religion and on the world’s understanding of the Gospel. And it will come crashing down on a Nation of men and women whose welfare is also our concern.” – “Trump Should Be Removed from Office,” ‘CT,’ December 19, 2019; edited

CALLING OF THE CHURCH

In the midst of all this Not so Friendly Fire among us, beloved, it becomes more than vital to Revisit just what The Church was called to do by its Creator. Allow me to first Start Broad, then Narrow down our Historic Charge found in God’s Two Great Commissions.

1. THE GREAT COMMISSION. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.” – JESUS OF NAZARETH, MATTHEW 28:19-20, AMP

2. THE CULTURAL COMMISSION. “You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.” – JESUS OF NAZARETH, MATTHEW 5::14-16, AMP

IN SUM. The King has appointed us to these Two Historic Tasks as His followers: (I) To Encourage others to become ‘Born of the Spirit’ in order to follow Him as well, offering them wise Discipleship in the Ways of the Lord; and (II) To Make a Difference in our culture by becoming servant to its and people and institutions on matters of Truth and Virtue, as a ‘Preservative’ of the health of that culture.

THE TEACHING

So now we turn to the important Task of reviewing and reporting THE MEANS by which we are to Fulfill these Two Commissions. I restate the passage here, with greater detail in the affirmation of the following Maxim or Thesis.

THESIS. The American Church will either succeed or fail in relation to the strength and consistency of its performance of these ‘Five Spiritual Giftings’ (as opposed to ‘offices or positions’). Or, their Absence or Abuse.

“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. 

As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.” – EPHESIANS 4:11-15, NASB

NOTE. This Presupposes that the Old Testament Model for Church Leaders has been honored:

“Furthermore, you shall select from all the people competent men who [reverently] fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; you shall place these over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.” – EXODUS 18:21, AMP

In addition, I am a ‘Continuist,’ (as opposed to a ‘Cessationist’), who believes in the ongoing, responsible operation of the ‘Charisms,’ or Spiritual Gifts. Importantly, this Grouping of Spiritual Gifts is parallel to and confirmed by the Apostle Paul’s specification of the Nine Gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12:4-11.

THE FIVE-FOLD MINISTRY. Now to these Five Core Functions (or ‘Gifts’) that must exist and operate in Spiritual Integrity for the ‘Church to be the Church,’ as it is popularly phrased.

• APOSTLES. Of immense importance to Leadership; from the Greek, ‘Apostolos’ [ἀπόστολος]: “A messenger, one sent on a mission [for God]; an envoy, one commissioned by another to represent him in some way, especially a man sent out by Jesus Christ Himself to preach the Gospel; properly, someone sent (commissioned), focusing back on the authority (commissioning) of the Sender; a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders (Herodotus 1, 21; 5; 1 Kings 14:6); in a broader sense the name is transferred to other eminent Christian teachers; as Barnabas; a royal ambassador to bear witness of The Christ.”

• PROPHETS. An often misunderstood (and much abused) term, taken from the term, ‘Prophétés’ [προφήτης]: “An interpreter or forth-teller of the divine will); poet; a person gifted at expositing divine truth; elevating/asserting one idea over another, especially through the spoken-word; properly, one who speaks forth by the inspiration of God; [in the Apostolic Era] they discerned and did what was best for the Christian cause; to serve as oracle of a Divine message; one to whom God makes known His mysteries (with understanding that they shall be communicated to others).”

• EVANGELISTS. Here the word in the Greek is, ‘Euaggelistés’ [εὐαγγελιστής]: “A missionary, bearer of good tiding; someone with a vocational calling from God to announce the good news of the Gospel, which includes preaching the full Message of Christ’s salvation (the Whole Gospel); all the Apostles were Evangelists, but not all Evangelists were Apostles, that is, they were subordinate to the Apostles; preacher or publisher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, licensed to preach, but not having charge of a particular church.” 

• PASTORS. The word for this assignment is, ‘Poimén’ [ποιμήν]: “A shepherd; hence, the feeder, protector, and ruler of a flock of men; someone who the Lord raises up to care for the total well-being of His flock (the people of the Lord); the presiding officer, manager, director, of any assembly; the designation of the spiritual leader of the flock of God; minister of the Gospel who has the charge of a church and congregation, whose duty is to watch over the people of his charge, and instruct them in the Sacred Doctrines of the Christian Religion.”

• TEACHERS. The last gift is defined by, ‘Didaskolos’ [διδάσκαλος]: “An instructor acknowledged for their mastery in their field of learning; in Scripture, a Bible teacher, competent in theology; those who in the religious assemblies of Christians undertake the work of teaching, with the special assistance of the Holy Spirit; also a learner, pupil or disciple (of Christ’s); used with Divine authority granted by the One who calls him to instruct in matters of Sound Doctrine; also associated with learned scribes [who record these important concepts and principles].”

Doctrinal Note. This view does not, however, subscribe to the New Apostolic Reformation’s claim that today we have “Apostles” and “Evangelists” holding the OFFICE of each of these as in the Early Church. Rather, that these are Spiritual Gifts conferred by the Holy Spirit. – cf. Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 124-11

THE KEY TO SUCCESS. “Sound Doctrine,” beloved. Or as we are fond now of saying: “The Truth, the Whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, so help us God. With it, all things Wondrous are possible. Without it, only the stuff of Darkness and Death.

Selah, beloved, long and thoughtful.

COMMENTARY. “Unto every believer is given some Gift of Grace, for their mutual help. All is given as seems best to Christ to bestow upon every one. He received for them, that he might give to them, a large measure of Gifts and Graces; particularly the gift of the Holy Ghost. Not a mere head knowledge, or bare acknowledging Christ to be the Son of God, but such as brings trust and obedience. There is a Fulness in Christ, and a measure of that Fulness given in the Counsel of God to every believer; but we never come to the perfect measure till we come to Heaven. God’s children are ‘growing,’ as long as they are in this world; and the Christian’s growth tends to the Glory of Christ. The more a man finds himself drawn out to improve in his station, and according to his measure, all that he has received, to the spiritual good of others, he may the more certainly believe that he has the Grace of sincere love and charity rooted in his heart.” – MATTHEW HENRY, ‘Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited

Do not lose the crucial importance that ALL believers are endowed with one or more of these ‘Charisms,’ or Gifts from the Holy Spirit, for the work of the ministry.

PRAXIS. If you don’t already know what Gift or Gifts you are granted, two things can lead to clarification. Prayerful Reflection of course, with study of these matters in the Scriptures. Two, there are Spiritual Inventories that are sometimes useful in pinning this down. – e.g., Jeff Carver, ‘Spiritual Gifts Test;’ Discipleship Ministries, ‘Spiritual Gifts Inventory;’ Lifeway Christian Resources, ‘Spiritual Gifts Survey.’

This is important, beloved, and rather exciting, especially for those who are now on the Road of Discover of what your Gift-Calling shall be for the challenging days ahead.

THE SUCCESSFUL CHURCH

In the Mind of God and the Apostles, it was Axiomatic that an effective church could not possibly operate without the full and consistent presence and expression of these Divine Gifts. Paul said as much in the Conclusion of the passage from Ephesians.

“His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church), [That it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the [full and accurate] knowledge of the Son of God, that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood (the completeness of personality which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ’s own perfection), the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.” – EPHESIANS 4:12-13, AMPC

COMMENTARY. The brilliant WILLIAM MACDONALD once again takes us to school, uncomfortably I might add, on the terrible Implications of this Doctrine of the Church. Read and listen and absorb its full measure of meaning for the believers today, in this ever-Darkening Era of Trump.

“We come now to the FUNCTION OR PURPOSE of the Gifts. It is for the ‘Equipping of the Saints for the work of the ministry, for the Edifying of the Body of Christ. The Process goes something like this: (1) Gifts Equip the saints; (2) The saints are then able to Serve; and (3) The Body is then Built up…

It is the Divine Method of producing Growth [and Health] in the Body of Christ, both in size and spirituality…Verse 13 answers the Question, ‘How long will this Growth process continue?’ The Answer is ‘Till we all come to a State of Unity, Maturity, and Conformity [to the Truth and Virtue of God]…The Measure of the Stature of the Church means its complete development, the fulfillment of God’s Plan for its Growth.” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, pp. 1935-1936; edited

SOUND TEACHING. The very Lifeblood of an assembly, is found in paying the closest of attention to the Last Days Charge to Teachers and Pastors and Evangelists of the Church:

Preparation for the Lord’s ‘Parousia’ and the ‘Catching up’ of the Saints. – cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 2 Thessalonians 2:7

TO WIT: Christ and the Apostles then, and we Disciples, must now attend to the Core Mission of Protecting, Preserving and Promulgating Truth as Sound Doctrine, at every cost, if the Church – or what is left of it – is to Survive and Succeed in the unprecedented Challenges in the years ahead.

Ecclesiastical ‘business as usual’ will simply no longer do – as if it ever did. And here is precisely why.

“So that we are no longer children [spiritually immature], tossed back and forth [like ships on a stormy sea] and carried about by every wind of [shifting] doctrine, by the cunning and trickery of [unscrupulous] men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything [for personal profit]. But speaking the truth in love [in all things—both our speech and our lives expressing His truth], let us GROW UP in all things into Him [following His example] who is the Head—Christ.” – EPHESIANS 4:14-15, AMPC

• NO LONGER CHILDREN. I have argued for some time now that the American Church is filled with silliness and pretension and immaturity, because of the patent Absence of Sound Doctrines being taught. We have offered ‘Baby Talk’ Christianity for the Last Days, tantamount to a Death Sentence upon Faith, anemically incapable to suffer any real Test. It simply cannot withstand what is Coming, and I daresay is already Here.

• ‘NÉPIOS’ [νήπιος]. This is the Greek word used in this passage for “Children.” Listen carefully and painfully to what I propose the American Church has churned out by the millions for such a time as this, and consequently why the Nation is failing and falling into an Historic Ditch. DEFINITION: “An infant, a simple-minded or immature person; unlearned, unenlightened; an infant, child; a minor, not of age; childish, untaught, unskilled, ignorant; a simple minded [naïve] ‘babe in Christ.’” 

In Allegorical terms, this idea came to mind as I reflected on my Navy Dad’s gritty wisdom, borne of fiercer battles than we shall likely ever know.

‘A ship is no better or surer than the integrity of her Captain, the maturity of her crew, the power of her engines, and the straightness of her rudder.’

AMERICAN INTERREGNUM

This term came to mind about here, defined as: “The time in which a throne is vacant, between the death or abdication of a king and the accession of his successor. An ‘Interregnum’ in strictness, can happen only in governments where the king is elective; for in hereditary kingdoms, the reign of the successor commences at the moment of his predecessor’s death or demise. The word however is used with more latitude.” – NOAH WEBSTER, 1828; edited

Enter, the Presidential Election of November 3, 2020, in which many have concluded that it offers People of the Book, NO REAL CHOICE. Thus, leaving us ‘Sine rege,’ “Without a king.”

And, as Aristotle proposed Millennia ago: “Nature abhors a vacuum.” 

ANCILLARY CRISIS. As Paul the Apostle has written of it, mere ‘Babes in Christ,’ then, are now expected to take on the End Times War with the Daemons of Hell, armed with half-truths and what Paul called “fables and myths,” fit only for little children. 

He writes in blistering prose, the following Prophetic Warning.

“For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying], they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold, And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions.” – 2 TIMOTHY 4:3-4, AMPC

THE CHURCH. Welcome to the Great Majority of the American Church today – just as Paul and Timothy and Jesus Christ said it would be: Lost of Sound Doctrine, in favor of worldly, childish Fairy Tales that make them feel (falsely) secure. I truly never thought I would be witness to it, but here it is, indisputably Present Everywhere.

Selah. 

LAST THOUGHTS

I am just about to finish the moving, literary magnum opus by Holocaust survivor, ELIE WIESEL, ‘The Night Trilogy’ (2008). Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 and dozens of other awards for his intrepid march from the soul-slaughtering Nightmare of Auschwitz, to the slow, torturous Climb back to human life and some faith. 

This after declaring ‘God is Dead’ in so many ways, as he endured the Unthinkable that Year in Hell’s Camp – Wiesel grips the heart as few writers can do, first with whispers, then shouts-out-loud, of The Whirlwind America’s reckless sowing may soon be Inheriting. – cf. Hosea 8:7

HARBINGER. Now I am not arguing that America is about to experience or sponsor another Holocaust, the brutal, bloody slaughter of 65 million preborn children notwithstanding, that is. But what I will propose is that that ‘Same Spirit of Barbarism’ that prevailed in Germany in the 1930s is back among us, beloved, in startling and stunning Measure.

And if I am right in that assessment, borne of my 40 Years with the King as a teacher and writer and commentator on matters of Political Eschatology, then we’d best be deeply, gravely concerned about where America is about to go:

If she is not very, very careful, the Way of Berlin in 1930.

NIGHT IS COMING. Wiesel’s Three, roughly chronological installments of his life and times and monumental personal and spiritual Struggles, in both non-fiction and novel forms, provide superb Metaphor and Organizing Template for where this Three-Part Series is going. 

But it is in his First Book, ‘Night,’ where he resonates with my own Jewish-American Soul, as he agonizingly recounts what ‘Could’ happen here, beloved. I tell you from Ezekiel’s ancient bones, it Could indeed, if we are not very bold to avoid it.

“Never shall I forget that Night, the first Night in camp, which has turned my life into one long Night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed…Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never…I did not deny God’s existence, but I doubted His absolute justice.” – ‘Night,’ 1958, Chapter 3; edited

This same insidious, hopeless, fear-driven Doubt has entered into the Bloodstream of the Church, in my studied view, to our sure and Final Collapse, if we do not Awaken.

Sooner than soon.

ADAPTATION. What I intend to do here, based on Wiesel’s Template, is the following in Three Teachings.

1. INTRODUCE us to a Model of the Successful Church as the Lord and His Apostles and Teachers presented to us in the New Testament Canon. This first Lesson has attempted to do just that.

2. PROVIDE a Short History of the seduction and perversion of the German Church during the 1930s, to gain prudent caution from its treacherous and violent example.

3. DESCRIBE the Emergence of ‘The Confessing Church’ as courageous,  Biblical Response to the Fascist Savagery that reigned in Germany and other parts of Europe for 13 years, from 1933 to 1945, until the German Surrender at Reims, May 7, 1945.

THESIS. I continue to advance my admittedly Controversial Proposal: That the American Church shows many, many Signs that she is already treading the same insidious Path as did the German Church 90 years ago. By Shameless Accommodation to the suffocating shadow of ‘Alt Right Nationalism,’ so terrifyingly reminiscent of the National Socialism of Hitler’s Era. 

If even half true, we desperately need to Awaken to that distinct possibility, and the Mayhem it would surely produce for an already deeply Compromised Ecclesiastical and Political Order – or should I better say, ‘Disorder’?

CODA: SINCLAIR LEWIS. Has often been associated with the now fully iconic, but heretofore unverified statement: 

“When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the Flag and carrying a Cross.” 

Here is what he actually said, according to the reasonably well researched, ‘Quote Investigator’ (July 28, 2017; edited). 

“Sinclair Lewis’s 1935 novel ‘It Can’t Happen Here,’ included the following thematically relevant passage: He was afraid that the world struggle today was not of Communism against Fascism, but of Tolerance against the Bigotry that was preached equally by Communism and Fascism. But he saw too that in America the struggle was befogged by the fact that the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word ‘Fascism’ and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty.” – July 28, 2017; edited

I believe Lewis was dead on, as I see every single inch and nuance of it taking place in America every single day, in staggering Contradiction of Christian Canon and common decency – just as it did in Germany.

A PROPHET SPEAKS. To close this study and construct a Bridge to the next installment, I refer us to the fiery and prescient Word delivered through Jeremiah, as Israel was facing their own Impending Captivity and Destruction at the hands of the Babylonians

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Stand by the roads and look; and ask for the eternal paths, where the good, old way is; then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’ But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’” – JEREMIAH 6:16, AMPC

So has America, beloved, said the very same, by every reasonable and Biblical reckoning I have been able to find. Thus, my Argument stands: That we are steaming headlong into the very same Darkness that Europe embraced nearly a Century ago.

FOR PASTORS. To a passage that was whispered to me just this morning, and not one with which I am familiar at all. For our Leaders, Teachers, Pastors and Elders, do consider it most soberly.

“And he said, ‘The LORD thunders and roars from Zion [in judgment]

And utters His voice from Jerusalem; Then the pastures of the shepherds mourn,

and the summit of [Mount] Carmel dries up [because of God’s judgment].’” – AMOS 1:2, AMP

With all my heart, I believe God is calling you Pastors, especially, to make doubly sure that you are teaching Sound Doctrines that directly speak to the Historic Crisis taking place in America, to Prepare us for what is to come. – cf. Ezekiel 33:8-9; James 3:1

Lives depend on it, dear Pastor, both temporal and Eternal.
