1. FIRST THOUGHTS

Since the very first year of my Rescue by Jesus Christ in the fall of 1979, for reasons that I can only now call inspired, I have been fascinated, captivated, perhaps even obsessed with the entire idea of the world plunging increasingly into some sort of Great Darkness.

A WORLD IN TRAVAIL. Certainly my graduate study of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and its associate Principle of Entropy attached me to this general idea that: ‘All things are moving toward Retrograde,’ and not the opposite. That applies not only to a Nation, but also to literally everything, including the entire Cosmos.

Or as PAUL THE APOSTLE poignantly described it in his exquisite Letter to the Romans: “For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” – ROMANS 8:22-23, NKJV

That intellectual and spiritual pique was deepened and disciplined rather quickly when pastor Eugene Kraft asked me in 1981 to teach an adult course on the entire Book of Revelation to his nondescript little church in Stockton California. That class started with six people, but in two years ballooned to 220 attendees, instructing and encouraging my first efforts toward the fine art and science of applying Theology to largely Socio-Political events.

Nearly 40 years later, those very first glimmers of what I would later define as ‘Political Eschatology’ came to be known and practiced as: “The fusion of theology with cultural and geopolitical analysis.” Which in its turn resulted in my first book, ‘The Sixth Seal: A Pre-Wrath Commentary on the End of History As We Know It,’ published in 2017.

A substantially updated Second Edition is forthcoming, to be published toward the end of 2022 or at the beginning of 2023: ‘The Sixth Seal II: A Pre-Wrath Commentary Redux on the Rise of Trump Nationalism and the Decline of the American Order, 2017-2021’

PERSONAL BIRTH PANGS. Not very unlike the first tremors of the Last Days that is our subject matter for today’s discussion, my own personal transformation from a radically secular university professor was painful. In fact, I would use the word, ‘wrenching,’ at certain points in my journey toward becoming a genuinely ‘Christian’ scholar, as opposed to another run-of-the-mill Christian author who writes stuff that sounds pretty much like the world.

Though I was not aware of it in my early years as a follower of Christ, I was clearly being fundamentally ‘changed’ by both the Words of God and His Spirit according to a Divine promise and command recorded in that same Letter to the Romans.

“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. ‘And do not be conformed to this world’ [any longer with its superficial values and customs], ‘but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by ‘the renewing of your mind’ [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” – ROMANS 12:1-2, AMP

In only the last five to seven years I have discovered how powerful this admonition is, because it explains for me why so many self-proclaimed Christians are acting In so very many ways against Christ and against Truth. KING SOLOMON summed it up perfectly: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” – PROVERBS 23:7, KJV

It really is all about ‘Worldview’ beloved, and that’s why I spend so very much time hammering away about the way the Church ‘thinks!’

THE CONTRAST. Also out of my still young understanding of this Christian journey was the fact that I was becoming more and more filled with the Lord’s Light while the world at the very same time was plunging more and more rapidly into Deep Darkness. Which brings us full circle into our present moment, powerfully summarized by our King.

“In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being. In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines on in the darkness, ‘and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].’” – JOHN 1:1-5, AMP

When those words were spoken and written 2000 years ago, the earth was already plunging into that Darkness. But today beloved, today our world is racing at Lightspeed into the very thick of it. It is no longer a secret to any discerning American that the Nation is becoming virtually engulfed by the vicious Darkness of Donald Trump’s burgeoning White Christian Nationalism.

And it’s killing us.

THE IMPACT. To be blunt: He is the very One about whom the Law and the Prophets and the Messiah and the Apostles spoke,  who would serve as the Lightning Rod to electrify the last of the Last Days, to become ‘The Ignition’ as it were, to all that would follow.

Antichrist himself. Selah.

1. AMERICA IN THE CROSSHAIRS

In a stunningly prescient ‘Jerusalem Post’ essay by SHERMAN POMERANTZ titled, “is God Punishing the United States of America?” (Aug. 24, 2022), the author consciously or unconsciously outlines the parameters of Christ’s Olivet Discourse with impressive accuracy. He thereby does yeoman’s work in the construction of a powerful rationale for an Americentric World experiencing rapidly accelerating “Birth Pangs,” heralding the soon Return of the Jewish Messiah.

And, the Antichrist as well, just before His Arrival.

“From the end of World War II and for 70 years thereafter, America ‘worked.’ The triumph of Democracy and Freedom over Fascism and national land grabs energized the American body politic to take responsibility and rebuild the world after the devastating losses in the War. ‘The World was put back in Order,’ nations devastated by battle were rebuilt (much of that through US programs like the Marshall Plan), while people felt secure enough to plan for careers, family, education and retirement. America’s role as the world’s Police Officer, resentful as that made some nations feel (everyone remembers the term ‘Ugly American’), kept the world in check …

However, 77 years after the end of the War, it all seems to be falling apart. Why? What happened? For sure, US foreign policy changed beginning in the Obama years, when it started to move away from the country’s self-defined role as the world Police Officer. Yes, countries do alter their foreign policies without their cultures going downhill. Yet over these past 13 years, with the advent of the smartphone and the exponential rise of social networking, hardly a day goes by that we don’t see some catastrophic event or trend that does not augur well for the continued success of the world’s greatest Democracy …

‘[T]here has never been a time in post-Civil War history as now where the US has been so broken,’ for so many things seem to be going wrong simultaneously, and where the political leadership seems powerless to deal with all of it. It is almost as if God is now expressing Displeasure with His servant, the US, in the course it has taken.”

Pomerantz then does brilliant, surgical analysis that we can translate into a bullet point indictment of America uniquely incurring the advancing Wrath of the Almighty for her many transgressions.

• A very likely US Second Civil War between Republicans and Democrats.
• The US mass shooting crisis and gun ownership.
• The catastrophic weather in the US.
• The American homeless crisis.

DK. I submit to you that the United States of America has always indeed been in the Plans of God as very possibly The Linchpin to all of it, second only to Israel. But the Purpose is of His Plan began to become clearer to me now as I watch what is happening all around us, most especially in direct relation to the mind boggling and nearly inexplicable RISE OF DONALD TRUMP to the political forefront of not only America, but the entire world.

I further submit that The Intersection between America’s central role in world history and now Last Days History and the rise of Donald Trump as the lead candidate for the Biblical Antichrist can no longer be overlooked. If this Intersection is what I think it is, it goes far to explain the onset of the ‘Birth Pangs’ that the world is now experiencing more intensely every single day.

1. THE TEACHING

SCRIPTURE. “But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs [of the intolerable anguish and the time of unprecedented trouble].” – MATTHEW 24:8, AMP

Early on the morning of Sunday August 28th, 2022, I was led to study the entire Chapter of MARK 13, which is a record of Jesus Christ’s epic OLIVET DISCOURSE concerning Last Things. Importantly, it is parallel to Matthew’s Account (Ch. 24) and Luke’s Account (Ch. 21).

As I began to read Mark’s Narrative, I noticed an orderly ‘Superstructure’of the entire scenario of the Return of Jesus Christ I had never before recognized.  Or what I am calling in this essay, borrowing shamelessly from J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S wondrous third book of his Trilogy, ‘The Return of the King’ (1955).

THE THREE PHASES. Here is what I saw, and I submit it before the Lord to you all for your prayerful and critical review. My hope is that it will reconcile opposing points of view about the timing of the Rapture, the Seven Year Tribulation era, and the Final Consummation of Christ’s Return to destroy the forces of Antichrist.

1. The Birth Pangs of the Gentiles – Mark 13:3-13
2. The Great Tribulation of the Jews – Mark 13:14-23
3. The Grand Reconciliation of Christians and Jews – Mark 13:24-27

BIRTH PANGS. Today obviously we’re going to review that FIRST PHASE, called by the Lord Christ Himself, “The Beginning of Sorrows.” in that regard, the base-word used here in the Greek is, ‘Ódin’ [ὠδίν]: “The pain of childbirth, acute pain, severe agony, a snare; grief, distress; anguish; intense or extreme suffering; great travail; labor pains as with the birth of a child or a New Order.”

Perhaps beloved now you understand why you are so distressed as you see the things going on all around you today. We are here in the very Center of the Beginning of Sorrows, prior to but not the same as The Great Tribulation of seven years that will follow.

These are merely painful ‘Harbingers’ of what is yet to come vastly more painfully and destructively and terrifyingly.

MARK 13:13-27. As I sensed the Lord instruct me, we will next take these 10 Verses, case by case, in brief and detailed summary of what this particular Phase involves. Rendered in the New King James Version for efficiency and accuracy. Interpretive assistance is borrowed from WILLIAM MACDONALD’S excellent ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary’ (1995, pp. 1355-1356).

• V6. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many.” WM: Many false christs were to appear claiming to be the Messiah. Such individuals would also be the leaders of various cults in the Last Times, each with its own, personal “antichrist.”

• VV7-8. “But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows [birth pangs].” WM: The disciples were instructed to not presume that these Birth Pangs were the signal of the actual End of the world, but rather again ‘early signs’ of a period of unparalleled travail and chaos and terror that would follow later. Though MacDonald does not mention it, I add that there is clear indication of interracial and ethnic conflict, and more than a suggestion of Civil War.

• V9. “But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them.” WM: The Lord predicted great personal testing for those who would be unflinching in their testimony for Him. They would be put on trial before religious and civil courts. In some disagreement with Mr. MacDonald, I add that this is not a reference to the 144,000 Jews who will serve as evangelists after the Exit of the Church.

• V10. “And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations.” WM: Here the Lord clearly instructs that the Gospel must be taken to all the nations before the Rapture of the Church. It must be proclaimed worldwide, but that is a difficult measure to make accurately. The point is, the Return of Christ for His Bride could occur at any moment, as differentiated from His Return with the Saints to Judge the forces of Antichrist and all wickedness.

• V11. “But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.” WM: Jesus also promises that persecuted believers on trial for His sake would be given Divine help in making their defense. They would not need to prepare their case in advance; perhaps there would not be time. The Holy Spirit would give them exactly the right words.

• V12-13. “Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” WM: Another aspect of these pre-Tribulation Days will be widespread betrayal of those who are loyal to the Savior. Family members will serve as antagonists against true believers and a great wave of anti-Christian sentiment will sweep the world. It will take great courage to remain true to Christ, but he who endures to the very end shall be saved. Selah.

INTERPRETIVE SUMMARY. After wrestling with these and many other passages for four decades, I offer this in Summary of what I think is taking place now, and will take place in the days just ahead of us.

• I. BIRTH PANGS. All true Christians we’ll go through the first Five Seals of Revelation, Chapter 6, which is nearly perfectly parallel to the Scriptures in Mark 13:3-13. Thus, our leaders and teachers and pastors should be preparing God’s people for very rough sailing ahead as outlined in the very Words of Christ the Messiah. But clearly, beloved, they are not! Having listened to other voices more than ever before only during the past six years or so, they have largely chosen to turn away their ears from the Voice of the Holy Spirit and Words of God, and turn aside instead to myths and fables pleasing to their congregations. – cf. 2 Timothy 4:4

• II. GREAT TRIBULATION. Significantly my dear friends, it is only AFTER the catastrophic Rapture of Christ’s True Church at the end of the Fifth Seal Judgment and perhaps a split second before the opening of Seal Six that the seven-year Great Tribulation is initiated (Mark 13:14-23). That is “The Time of Jacob’s Troubles” as the Prophet Jeremiah termed it (30:7), as God deals once and for all with His chosen people who began to follow Antichrist in this violent but stunningly Redemptive Phase of the End of all things. – cf. Daniel 9:27

• III. THE RETURN. At the end of the seven-year Great Tribulation, a triumphant Jesus Christ thunderously Returns with the Armies of Heaven on horseback (angels and Church Age saints) to rescue the remaining Jews and Tribulation saints, then to utterly annihilate the armies of Antichrist and all earthly forces that opposed Jesus Christ (Mark 13:24-27). Thus, we see things coming full circle with Jews and Christians being ‘reunited and restored’ to fellowship in the Messiah forever and ever. This is why I call this phase the beginning of The Grand Reconciliation. Selah.

We will deal in great detail with Phases II and III of the Return of the King in our next two studies, but will today finish with some last comments about what you and I will experience in the days just ahead.

1. LAST THOUGHTS

Should all of this be in agreement with the teachings of Christ for the Last Times, then it is powerfully suggestive of what we should all be doing next. Which leads us to a single concept loaded with the full measure of Christ words frequently spoken to our generation:

“Therefore you also BE READY, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (LUKE 12:40, NKJV).

PREPARATION. After a review of several theological checklists that outline how the diligent Christian must prepare for those Five Seal Judgments, I settled on a very thoughtful one from JOHN PIPER (Oct. 1, 2021). To which I will add my own suggestions from my book, ‘The Sixth Seal,’ published in 2017.

1. PURSUE CHRISTLIKENESS NOW. “First, the Impulse that comes from the glorious prospect of seeing the Lord. ‘Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears [the second coming] we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure’ (1 John 3:2-3) … So, the Impulse of becoming a radically pure, holy, loving, sacrificial, Christlike person now is the intense hope and desire for that to happen when He Comes and we see Him. That’s the First Impulse.”

• READY YOURSELF FOR SUFFERING. “Second, the Impulse that comes from the necessity of suffering before Jesus Comes. Now I have in mind here all Christian suffering, because Paul said that ‘through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God’ (Acts 14:22). And I have in mind the suffering that will become more intense near the End, when Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:8, ‘The lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.’ Now Jesus speaks of that season of lawlessness in Matthew 24:11-13: ‘Many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved’ … So, one way to prepare for the Second Coming and its antecedent sufferings is to submit ourselves with intelligence and wisdom and joy to the ‘absolute standards of God’s Law’ for the sake of warm love, not cold love.”

• WORK FAITHFULLY FOR CHRIST. “The Third Impulse to Be Ready for the Second Coming is the Impulse to be found faithful and vigilant in our particular callings. Over and over and over in the New Testament, we are told to ‘be watchful, to be awake, to be ready!’ What does that mean? I think the Parable of the Ten Virgins is a good illustration of what it means. ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. [So this is a picture of being ready for the second coming, the return of the bridegroom.] Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps’ … So, the conclusion of the whole Parable is answering this question: How do you get ready? ‘Watch therefore, for you know neither the day or the hour.’ Now, what does that mean? Both the wise and the foolish virgins were asleep, and there was no criticism. That’s not a problem. ‘To watch,’ therefore, doesn’t mean any kind of artificial getting up at night, looking out the window, paying a lot of attention to end-times conspiracy theories.”

DK’S TWO CENTS. To this excellent brief list I would suggest the following as supplement to it. Most (but not all) of my contribution turns a bit more to the practical and material things that we’ll need attend to in order to complete our Preparation for what is soon coming.

• SPIRITUAL PREPARATION. Whether already saved or seriously lapsed from the Faith, “the first thing to do to prepare for the rough times ahead is to quite simply, ‘Get right with God.’This doesn’t boil down to a set formula or particular prayer as much as to a heartfelt plea for God to, indeed, take control of one’s life and all its mayhem and mistakes which is for all intents and purposes and in varying degrees, reeling out of control. I did this on October 30, 1979, just one day before I had planned to take my own life on Halloween the very next day. While many things didn’t improve right away, there was this inexorable pull toward God’s Peace and Light and Wisdom that is undeniable, as I look back over the years, now more than forty years later at the age of seventy-seven as I write these words. So yes, just get right with Him as a first step toward being Rebirthed (or Rededicated) into extraordinary Love and Truth and Power that is accessible in no other way (Jn. 3:16; Rom. 10:9–-10). And all the rest shall surely follow.”

• FINANCIAL PREPARATION. “Supposing that the banks may well fail or at least increasingly restrict our access to our own accounts, as took place in both Greece and China recently, I’d strongly suggest you follow my attorney’s counsels a few years back to avoid placing most of our money in our local bank. Rather, it may well be much safer to purchase a strong box to keep a sizable sum of cash in that (at least $1,000), rather than rely on the vicissitudes of world markets which interact, sometimes disastrously, with our banks. In that same regard, we are investing a modest amount in precious metals, especially silver, and avoiding like the plague the stock market highs and lows which we witness taking place on a daily basis. Second, downsizing is almost always a good idea, though in these times it may soon become absolutely necessary. Reassess your lifestyle and start to put away (sell or donate or both) various excessive material things, toys that we no longer use or need, and yes, that massive house you barely qualified for that is half empty since the kids left for college. And speaking of college, don’t do what we did and leverage yourself into an economic box canyon with hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt. And if you already have, establish a manageable payback strategy that moves you toward payoff as soon as is practical.”

• PRACTICAL PREPARATION. “One, barring religious reasons for not doing so, purchase at least one firearm and a sufficient supply of ammunition to last for a month. This, to be blunt, while you still can. I won’t take the time here to document the many governmental assaults on both the First and Second Amendments, but clearly, only a hermit would deny the fact that Americans are fast losing ground on our Constitutional freedoms, most rapidly and importantly, the first two. Second, also seriously consider buying a small, gas-powered generator suitable to the size of your dwelling, with enough gasoline to last for about a month. And for those who already have a gas grill, purchase extra canisters of butane for that same period of time. The obvious point here is to be able to generate heat for both comfort and cooking during times when the weather or power loss demand it. Also think about other power needs such as flashlights with long-life batteries, candles, matches, and a shortwave radio for listening in on any emergency broadcasts during a time when normal television and radio signals are lost. Finally, some sort of water purifier will become a must if the city or country loses power, since our water supplies are driven by electricity. Stocking up on bottled water is of course a good idea, but there may come a time when we will have to foray for our own water wherever it may be found, and a purifier would become a necessity in such circumstances. A long list of such devices that would be used for camping and backpacking are easily accessible online for relatively low cost.”

CODA. As I draw this to a close, it would be terribly irresponsible of me to not repeat The Warnings I have been instructed to speak for months on end now to those believers who are in hot pursuit of a dangerous Path to Destruction. Here I am principally addressing who I have come to call: MAGA CHRISTIANS.

I must continue to be blunt: Before the Lord, I tell you straight up that if you continue this idolatrous course of Trump Nationalism, ‘you could very well lose your position in the Kingdom of God.’ I do not say this lightly nor with any personal animus, but in trembling fear of the One who commanded me to say it.

More specifically, I was led to THREE PASSAGES to share with you as I close this Teaching on Preparing for the Return of the King. They are severe, but are offered by a God whose love for you has, of necessity, become severe.

• JUDE 1:17-19 (AMP). “But as for you, beloved, remember the [prophetic] words spoken by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. They used to say to you, ‘In the last days there will be scoffers, following after their own ungodly passions.’ These are the ones who are [agitators] causing divisions—worldly-minded [secular, unspiritual, carnal, merely sensual—unsaved], devoid of the Spirit.” – Received on Aug. 30, 2022

• TITUS 1:16 (AMPC). “They profess to know God [to recognize, perceive, and be acquainted with Him], but deny and disown and renounce Him by what they do; they are detestable and loathsome, unbelieving and disobedient and disloyal and rebellious, and [they are] unfit and worthless for good work (deed or enterprise) of any kind.” – Received on Aug. 31, 2022

• NEHEMIAH 2:20 (NKJV). “ So I answered them, and said to them, “The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem.” – Received on Sep. 1, 2022

COMMENTARY ON TITUS. “‘They profess that they know God; but in works they deny Him.’—These bitter foes to the Truth, Titus must remember, will present themselves under the guise of friends. They will rank themselves in the Christian company openly, with their lips confessing God, but in their way of life, in their acts, ‘practically denying’ the very things they were so careful to affirm with they had been making.

‘Being abominable.’—This is the only place where this strong expression is used in the New Testament. It signifies that the life and actions of these men, who professed to be His servants, had made them hateful in the sight of God. ‘And disobedient.’—Rebellious and opposed to all law and order would Titus find them.

‘And unto every good work reprobate.’—As a consequence of their hypocritical, selfish, defiled life, these men, when any good and noble work had to be done, were simply useless, worthless; and to teachers of this kind were many of the Cretan believers content to go for instruction in Christian doctrine and practice.” – CHARLES ELLICOTT, ‘Old and New Testament Commentary for English Readers,’ 1878, 1897; edited

DK’S CLOSE. To all those who believe me to be ‘excessively severe’ by these remonstrances against MAGA Christian Nationalism, I confess this. I was questioning myself early the morning of my draft composition about that very matter, when my eyes immediately fell upon what the Apostle recorded in TITUS 1, VERSE 13:

“And this account of them is [really] true. Because it is [true], ‘rebuke them sharply [deal sternly, even severely with them],’ so that they may be sound in the faith and free from error.”

Since I love and fear Him far more than I do you, and He values your life far more than any of us do, I am honor bound to say what I heard Him tell me to write. In the fervent hope, of course, that you will listen and turn from ‘This Present Darkness,’ as both FRANK PERETTI and the Scriptures describe it. This very day! – cf. Ephesians 6:12

This is the ‘Severe Light and Love of Christ’ to the Church that is necessary for such a Time as this, in these, the waning hours of the entire Church Age.
