NOTES ON THE RISE OF QANON: THE FINAL SEDUCTION OF THE AMERICAN CHURCH – PART II

PART II: AMERICAN DEBUT

‘PESACH SAMEACH!’ – Passover, Hebrew Pesaḥ or Pesach, in Judaism, a 8 Day Holiday commemorating the Hebrews’ Liberation from Slavery in Egypt and the “Passing Over” of Yah’s Forces of Destruction, or the sparing of the firstborn of the Israelites, when the Lord “Smote the land of Egypt” on the Eve of the Exodus. Passover begins with the 15th and ends with the 21st day of the month of Nisan (2021: Sat March 27 – Sun April 4, Easter).

QUESTION: Are we entering upon such a ‘Time of Smiting’ in America today, beloved?  Selah.

  1. FIRST THOUGHTS

I begin by proposing flatly that America has quite apparently Lost her Mind, and very nearly now, her very Soul. In this tragic regard, most psychologists will tell you that ‘going mad’ essentially involves one’s loss of an understanding of ‘What is Real.’

To wit:

INSANITY. “Mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish Fantasy from Reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior.” – DR. RYAN HOWES, “The Definition of Insanity: Perseverance vs. Perseveration,” ‘Psychology Today,’ July 27. 2009; edited

The most damning evidence for my claim: America’s increasing Embrace of The QAnon Conspiracy Theory, its sinister talons now reaching ever deeper into the inner chambers of the American Church. Incredibly, with nary a whimper from our seemingly anesthetized Pastors. 

CASE IN POINT. In a chilling NPR interview by host journalist, ARI SHAPIRO with the Religious News Service’s KATELYN BEATY, we see the following telling exchange on August 21, 2020. The piece is entitled: “How QAnon Conspiracy Is Spreading In Christian Communities Across The U.S.” 

Quoted as always at some length for a full grasp of these vital issues of a most terrible importance to all true Christians. Shapiro’s comments will be indicated by “S,” while Beaty’s by “B.”

“S: The false Conspiracy Theory known as QAnon is moving from fringe Internet chatrooms into Mainstream Politics. A Republican congressional candidate in Georgia is a supporter. The Texas Republican Party has used a QAnon slogan in campaign messaging. President Trump himself has retweeted QAnon followers at least 200 times and described them as, quote, ‘People that love our country.’ To be clear, this is a group the FBI has labeled a potential domestic terrorist threat. Its followers believe that President Trump is saving the world from a cult of cannibalistic pedophiles…Your piece is called ‘QAnon: The Alternative Religion that’s Coming to Your Church.’ Do the people you interviewed really see it as a Belief System comparable to organized religion?

B: They do. They are picking up on the overt Spiritual language that Q, whoever that is, is using in his messages on the Internet, and they see that as connecting directly to the Bible, to the God of Christianity and to God’s hand at work in the world. So, they see the QAnon messages as revealing truth in the world and that they are supposed to take up a Spiritual Battle to reveal truth…The Pastors that I spoke with talked about a Crisis of Authority that they feel acutely as spiritual leaders. They perceive that we’re in this time when traditional forms of credibility, of verifying truth, of looking at authoritative figures as holding truth – we’re in a time when there’s a lot of mistrust of traditional sources of authority and truth. And they feel that themselves as Church Leaders. So, they’re concerned that if they try to take on QAnon directly and speak truth instead of falsehood, that they just – they won’t be trusted. They won’t be believed.” 

DK: Well now, by my conservative assessments, make that read, ‘Pastors are afraid to confront the Beast head on, period. We can invent any number of reasons and rationales that Beaty heard from a number of them, but FEAR is their nemesis, strongly suggesting that they have effectively given up The Fight before it began.

May I remind them all of Paul’s bitter Invective of such horrific condition. This is not pretty: God’s severe rebukes rarely are, but they are given to Awaken to Life.

“As it is written, ‘None is righteous, just and truthful and upright and conscientious, no, not one. No one understands [no one intelligently discerns or comprehends]; no one seeks out God. All have turned aside; together they have gone wrong and have become unprofitable and worthless; no one does right, not even one! Their throat is a yawning grave; they use their tongues to deceive (to mislead and to deal treacherously). – ROMANS 3:10-13, AMPC

BITTER HARVEST. How in God’s sacred name did we get here, beloved? What has happened to our Church? Though I have written of it much in this past year, let me now take us down a crucial but painful path, to answer that burning Question.

  1. BIRTH OF THE DEEP STATE

The Lead Question for me concerning what many in the Trump Camp call “The Deep State,” has been simple: Does the Deep State even exist? Is it ‘really Real,’ in the vernacular of Dr. Schaeffer, or in Urban Dictionary gorilla speak terms, “Is the Deep State ‘a thing?’

No. Well, sort of, ‘no.’

Lest you think me double-edged or minded, I need to explain. First, the evidence clearly shows that Deep State as a bona fide “Conspiracy” does not, in fact, exist. However, a more Conventional Definition of it in broad historical terms, does indicate that there has always been a sort of ‘shadow government,’ but not deserving enough respect for me to even capitalize it.

TWO ‘DEEP STATES.’ Following a review of a half dozen or more articles on this important subject, I came across one from an online publication called, ‘The Daily Dot,’ advertising itself as “Everyone’s hometown newspaper.” 

In it, a piece by AMRITA KHALID entitled, “What Exactly Is The Deep State, And Is It Even Real?” (January 26, 2021), ably distinguishes between these Two Visions of the Deep State, in a thoughtful and accurate manner. 

  • TRUMP’S DEEP STATE. The ‘Deep State’ is the worst kept secret government operation in Washington. Fox News host Sean Hannity grimly warned of an ‘Unelected Fourth Branch’ of government, leaking secrets to the media in a massive effort to undermine the Trump presidency. White House Chief Strategist STEVE BANNON vowed to destroy the ‘Administrative State,’ and his former news outlet ‘Breitbart’ blamed the firing of former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn on the Deep State.

Trump confidants and advisors such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Dennis Kucinich, Corey Lewandowski, and Roger Stone have all insisted that the deep state exists and is at war with President Donald Trump. InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones aired multiple segments linking the Deep State to everything from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s resignation to Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with the Russian lawyer. Reports have surfaced detailing that the Trump administration is considering a global network of private spies to counter supposed Deep State enemies.”

  • THE HISTORIC DEEP STATE. “The so-called ‘Deep State,’ sometimes also known as ‘shadow government,’ is often used to describe the bureaucracies of the military and spy agencies and their top secret inner-workings. The ROOTS of the Deep State’s Creation date back to the end of World War II and the expansion of what President Dwight Eisenhower deemed the ‘Military-Industrial Complex.’ Former congressional staffer MIKE LOFGREN is the author of ‘Deep State: The Fall of the Constitution and the Rise of Shadow Government and offered up the following definition of the Deep State on Bill Moyers:

‘(The Deep State) is a Hybrid of national security and law enforcement agencies: The Department of Defense, the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Justice Department. I also include the Department of the Treasury because of its jurisdiction over financial flows, its enforcement of international sanctions and its organic symbiosis with Wall Street.’

Lofgren also includes FISA courts and powerful federal courts such as the Eastern District of Virginia, which has issued subpoenas to Trump associates Paul Manafort and Flynn in connection with the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russia, and the Southern District of Manhattan, which has the ability to investigate Trump’s numerous conflicts of interests on Wall Street and once included ousted federal prosecutor Preet Bharara.”

IN SUM. There has been a semblance of a ‘Shadow Government’ ever since there has been a governing authority throughout history, without exception. What Trump does is, predictably, torture and twist the historic definition of it into a full-fledged, craftily organized Conspiracy expressly designed to destroy his presidency. Vastly more truthfully, to help him once more avoid responsibility for his countless Failures of Governance. 

Khalid’s superb review goes on to deliver what I consider to be a delicious Death Blow to the entire notion of Trump’s Deep State. I again quote it at length since it’s too important to truncate.

JASON ROYCE LINDSEY, the author of ‘The Concealment of the State,’ told the Daily Dot via email that study of Deep State terminology has its roots in Authoritarian Regimes like Egypt and Turkey, where the military-security component is strong. Politicians exist in the ‘Shallow State’ and military and security services exist in the ‘Deep State’ and are less apparent to the general public. According to Lindsey, the embrace of the Deep State concept by Trump supporters gives them someone to Blame for the administration’s setbacks.

‘The narrative that someone inside government is to blame is a false one,’ Lindsey wrote ‘but an easier explanation than laying out the real political complexity of the United States at this time and explaining how the various parts of government have to reach some consensus for actual legislation to happen.’

The numerous definitions of Deep State and the concept’s enthusiastic embrace by pro-Trump Conspiracy theorists make its serious discussion almost impossible. Other experts dismiss the idea of a Deep State altogether. The Daily Dot reached out to Pulitzer Prize-winning national security historian TIM WEINER to ask him to define what he understood a deep state to mean.

‘THERE IS NO DEEP STATE,’ he wrote to the Daily Dot in a Facebook message.

When asked to explain the many Trump supporters who are convinced of the Deep State’s plans to overthrow Trump, Weiner had a one-line response: ‘They are deluded.’

Y’all know what’s coming about right here.

GOD’S STRONG DELUSION. “Because of this God will send upon them a ‘misleading influence’ [an activity of error and deception] so they will believe the lie, in order that all may be judged and condemned who did not believe the truth [about their sin, and the need for salvation through Christ], but instead took pleasure in unrighteousness.

But we should and are [morally] obligated [as debtors] always to give thanks to God for you, believers beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through the sanctifying work of the Spirit [that sets you apart for God’s purpose] and by your faith in the truth [of God’s word that leads you to spiritual maturity].” – 2 THESSALONIANS 2:11-13, AMP; emphasis my own

  1. WHY Q IS SO DANGEROUS

As I continue to confess my earlier naiveté concerning the real threat of a proliferating, malevolent and fully renegade QAnon, I turn to a brilliant piece of investigative journalism by executive editor of The Atlantic, ADRIENNE LAFRANCE entitled, “The Prophecies of Q” (Part of the ‘Shadowland’ Conspiracy Series, June 2020).

To call it a compelling read is gross understatement. Here’s a rather large taste of a real-time scenario that sounds like something from an Alfred Hitchcock movie or Stephen King horror novel.

INSIDE Q. “If you were an adherent, no one would be able to tell. You would look like any other American. You could be a mother, picking leftovers off your toddler’s plate. You could be the young man in headphones across the street. You could be a bookkeeper, a dentist, a grandmother icing cupcakes in her kitchen. You may well have an affiliation with an Evangelical church. But you are hard to identify just from the way you look—which is good, because someday soon dark forces may try to track you down. 

You understand this sounds crazy, but you don’t care. You know that a small group of Manipulators, operating in the shadows, pull the planet’s strings. You know that they are powerful enough to abuse children without fear of retribution. You know that the Mainstream Media are their handmaidens, in partnership with Hillary Clinton and the secretive denizens of the Deep State. You know that only Donald Trump stands between you and a damned and ravaged world. You see plague and pestilence sweeping the planet, and understand that they are part of ‘The Plan.’ You know that a Clash between Good and Evil cannot be avoided, and you yearn for the Great Awakening that is coming. And so, you must be on guard at all times. You must shield your ears from the scorn of the ignorant. You must find those who are like you. And you must be Prepared to Fight. You know all this because you believe in Q.”

Now then, in light of the recent spate of mass killings in Colorado and Georgia (and the many preceding these), consider this chilling account as LaFrance continues.

CASE STUDY. “the origins of QAnon are recent, but even so, separating Myth from Reality can be hard. One place to begin is with EDGAR MADDISON WELCH, a deeply religious father of two, who until Sunday, December 4, 2016, had lived an unremarkable life in the small town of Salisbury, North Carolina. That morning, Welch grabbed his cellphone, a box of shotgun shells, and three loaded guns—a 9-mm AR-15 rifle, a six-shot .38-caliber Colt revolver, and a shotgun—and hopped into his Toyota Prius. He drove 360 miles to a well-to-do neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C.; parked his car; put the revolver in a holster at his hip; held the AR-15 rifle across his chest; and walked through the front door of a pizzeria called Comet Ping Pong…

Shortly after Trump’s election, as ‘Pizzagate’ roared across the Internet, Welch started binge-watching Conspiracy-Theory videos on YouTube. He tried to recruit help from at least two people to carry out a vigilante raid, texting them about his desire to sacrifice ‘the lives of a few for the lives of many’ and to Fight ‘a corrupt system that kidnaps, tortures and rapes babies and children in our own backyard.’ When Welch finally found himself inside the restaurant and understood that Comet Ping Pong was just a pizza shop, he set down his firearms, walked out the door, and surrendered to police, who had by then secured the perimeter. ‘The intel on this wasn’t 100 percent,’ Welch told The New York Times after his arrest.”

Q TURNS VIOLENT. Are we listening, beloved? Are you getting this, Pastors? Do you understand the rapid acceleration of the QAnon Mythology to the status of Blood Cult? If not, here is a Bullet Point Chronology of the growing Militance of the Q Movement. 

Taken from ‘The Guardian’s’ senior crime reporter, LOIS BECKETT, in an article entitled, “QAnon: A Timeline of Violence Linked to the Conspiracy Theory” (October 16, 2020). Each of these crimes are directly linked to Trump’s QAnon Movement.

  • 15 JUNE 2018. An Arizona resident blocks a bridge near the Hoover Dam with an armored vehicle. He later pleads guilty to a terrorism charge.
  • 19 DECEMBER 2018. A California man is arrested after being found with what appeared to be bomb-making materials in his car, in an alleged plot to blow up a satanic display in the capitol in Springfield, Illinois.
  • 13 MARCH 2019. In Staten Island, a 24-year-old man allegedly murders a leader in the Gambino crime family.
  • 25 SEPTEMBER 2019. A QAnon supporter allegedly smashes up the Chapel of the Holy Hill in Sedona, Arizona, while shouting about the Catholic Church supporting human trafficking.
  • 30 DECEMBER 2019. Montana police arrest a QAnon supporter from Colorado in connection with an alleged kidnapping scheme.
  • 26 MARCH 2020. A Kentucky mother is charged with kidnapping twin daughters. 
  • 2 APRIL 2020. A man is charged with intentionally derailing a freight train near the navy hospital ship Mercy in Los Angeles. 
  • 30 APRIL 2020. A woman is arrested after driving to New York and allegedly making threatening statements against Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.
  • 11 JUNE 2020. A Boston man leads police on a 20-mile car chase while livestreaming himself talking about QAnon.
  • 3 JULY 2020. Corey Hurren, a reservist in the Canadian Rangers, allegedly rams a truck through the gates of the prime minister’s residence in Ottawa.
  • 12 AUGUST 2020. A Texas woman is arrested after allegedly chasing and crashing into a car, then telling police she thought she was chasing a pedophile 
  • 1 OCTOBER 2020. Utah woman arrested in Oregon for allegedly kidnapping her young son.

AMERICAN RUBICON. History records that sometime in January, 49 BC, Julius Caesar led his Legio XIII brigades south over the Rubicon from Cisalpine Gaul to Italy to make his way to Rome. In doing so, he deliberately broke the Law on Imperium [a form of sovereignty] and made armed conflict inevitable. Since then, the phrase “Crossing the Rubicon” is a metaphor that means ‘To pass a point of no return.’

Did America do so, beloved, on January 6, 2021? Have we finally ‘Crossed Over’ to the Point of No Return? While that is a demonstrably Empirical Question yet to be answered, I believe more and more that Q and Donald Trump have at the very least, pushed us to the very edges of Himmelfarb’s Abyss.

Most significantly, and shamelessly: The Church Leaders did not respond!

  1. THE TEACHING

As we now reread this in the Context of Trump’s Conspiracy Movement, the Words take on a much richer, pertinent and urgently instructive meaning. So, let’s get right to it.

  • ‘THIS’ WISDOM. A stunning contrast is made by the Apostle here, between Wisdom that comes “from above” (‘Anóthen,’ ἄνωθεν, ‘from heaven’), and that which is “earthly, sensuous and demonic.” The first term is ‘Epigeios’ [ἐπίγειος]: “Worldly; arising from things below on the earth, from men (as opposed from God and Heaven).” The second word is, ‘Psuchikos’ [ψυχικός]: “Natural, of the soul or mind; carnal, arising from our animal our soulish aspects, as contrasted from the spiritual or glorified nature.” Finally, there is ‘Daimoniódés’ [δαιμονιώδης]: “Resembling or proceeding from an evil spirit, demon-like; influenced by Supernatural Evil.”
  • LEADS TO ALL EVIL. From the Greek, ‘Phaulos’ [φαῦλος], meaning: “Worthless, of no account; ethically, bad, wicked, base.” Whose main fruit are Envy and Contention, and possibly even worse, Confusion, which neutralizes all ability for work. From the term, ‘Akatastasia’ [ἀκαταστασία]: “Instability; disturbance; upheaval; revolution; near anarchy – first in the political, then in the moral; being out of control; disorder, uncertainty, tumult.” DK: The very opposite of the Divine Order that godly individuals bring to an enterprise. 

COMMENTARY. “There is always a danger that ‘Worldly-wise men’ will be given places of Leadership in the Church. We must constantly guard against allowing Worldly Principles to guide is in spiritual affairs. James calls this False Wisdom –  ‘earthly, sensual, and demonic.’ There is an intended downward progression in these Three Adjectives. ‘Earthly’ means that the wisdom is not from Heaven, but from this earth. ‘Sensual’ means that it is not the fruit of the Holy Spirit, but of man’s lower nature. ‘Demonic’ means that it stoops to actions that resemble the behavior of demons rather than those of men.” – WILLIAM MACDONALD, ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, pp. 2233-2234; edited

Thus came Trump, the Deep State, QAnon, and a Compliant Church. So do I once again admonish all Pastors here: “All things evil.” Your Teachings of which shall be judged most severely indeed. – cf. James 3:1

DK’S TAKE. I have maintained steadily that Donald Trump didn’t ‘Cause’ all this Wickedness and Chaos, but he has thus far served as its ‘Trigger Man,’ as Gas Lighter in Chief. For any number of reasons, mostly documentable, Trump reminds me closely of ‘The Bad Seed,’ to use a reference to an old 1954 movie that depicted an evil child named Rhoda, who at the age of 8 was already capable of Demonic conduct, including murder.

Yes, I believe the Comparison is valid. I do. There is a great deal of evidence on the record to show he was a disturbed young man from the beginning. One example follows from TOM LEONARD’S piece in the ‘Daily Mail,’ entitled, “Even as a Child Donald Trump Was a Horror” (May 24, 2017; edited).

“A pint-sized bully who loved to pull girls’ hair and once lobbed rocks at a toddler in his playpen. A loud-mouthed classroom know-all who could never admit he was wrong and boasted of giving the music teacher a black eye. And a sporting show-off who yearned to hear the crowd’s applause… but who would smash his baseball bat in fury if he didn’t win. Arrogant, over-bearing, thin-skinned, determined, and not exactly great with the ladies – Does this portrait of a child growing up in Fifties surburban New York sound like a certain grown-up (well, sort of grown-up) currently strutting the world stage?”

This, my friends, is the now, full grown man, still lurking in The Shadows at Mar-a-Lago who has already changed the Nation and Church dramatically in just four short years. And, I will continue to argue, may well prove to be the Ultimate World Changer in the years ahead.

  1. LAST THOUGHTS

I began our discussion writing about Insanity, that America, and now by extension, her Church, has gone stark, raving mad. The progression of my argument brings us full circle to the man behind much of it, Donald Trump, who many professional mental health professionals believe is indeed, Clinically Insane – leading millions of Americans to lose their minds (and possibly their souls) as well.

TRUMP THE MADMAN. A petition signed by 350 psychiatrists and other mental-health professionals claiming that President Donald Trump’s mental health is deteriorating rapidly amid impeachment proceedings is set to be submitted to Congress on Thursday. Here’s one quote from their assessment.

From TOM PORTER writing for ‘Insider’ on December 5, 2019, we learn the following.

“‘We are speaking out at this time because we are convinced that, as the time of possible impeachment approaches, Donald Trump has the real potential to become ever more dangerous, a threat to the safety of our nation,’ Drs. Bandy Lee, a Yale psychiatrist, Jerrold Post, a former CIA profiler, and John Zinner, a psychiatrist at George Washington University, wrote in a statement accompanying the petition, which was first reported by the British outlet The Independent…

They outlined the facets of Trump’s behavior that prompted them to speak out:

‘What makes Donald Trump so dangerous is the brittleness of his sense of worth. Any slight or criticism is experienced as a humiliation and degradation. To cope with the resultant hollow and empty feeling, he reacts with what is referred to as narcissistic rage. He is unable to take responsibility for any error, mistake, or failing. His default in that situation is to blame others and to attack the perceived source of his humiliation. These attacks of narcissistic rage can be brutal and destructive.’”

CODA. Beloved, I have gone into all this to drive home a Central Existential Point: America and her Church have for all intents and purposes gone practically, politically and spiritually, increasingly Morally Insane. This is not hyperbole, but demonstrable fact, well documented for those who truly want to know.

Leaving all of us with one Last Question:

Can America Return from this Historic Brink? While I cannot answer that in full quite yet, one thing is certain: THE CHURCH IS THE KEY. Therefore, we will we be addressing this in Part III in the Final Essay: “Slouching Toward Gomorrah.”
