NOTES ON THE SOUND OF SILENCE: DIVINE QUIET BEFORE YAH’S GREAT STORM PART I

PART I: “THE SILENCE OF REBELLION.”

PART II: “The Silence of Reverence.”

PART III: “The Silencing of a President.”

SCRIPTURE. “Take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead [let your lives be so in contrast as to] expose and reprove and convict them. For it is a shame even to speak of or mention the things that [such people] practice in secret. But when anything is exposed and reproved by the light, it is made visible and clear; and where everything is visible and clear there is light. Therefore He says, ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.’” – EPHESIANS 5:11-14, AMPC

QUOTATIONS

“We despise and abhor the bully, the brawler, the oppressor, whether in private or public life, but we despise no less the coward and the voluptuary. No man is worth calling a man who will not Fight rather than submit to infamy or see those that are dear to him suffer wrong. No nation deserves to exist if it permits itself to lose the stern and virile Virtues; and this without regard to whether the loss is due to the growth of a heartless and all-absorbing commercialism, to prolonged indulgence in luxury and soft, effortless ease, or to the deification of a warped and twisted sentimentality.” –  THEODORE ROOSEVELT, ‘Nobel Peace Prize Lecture,’ May 5, 1910; edited

“Some who seek to escape from taking a stand publicly find a place of refuge in a private virtuousness. Such a man does not steal. He does not commit murder. He does not commit adultery. Within the limits of his powers he does good. But in his voluntary renunciation of publicity he knows how to remain punctiliously within the permitted bounds which preserve him from involvement in conflict. He must be blind and deaf to the wrongs which surround him. It is only at the price of an act of self-deception that he can safeguard his private blamelessness against contamination through responsible action in the world. Whatever he may do, that which he omits to do will give him no peace. Either this disquiet will destroy him or he will become the most hypocritical of Pharisees.” – DIETRICH BONHOEFFER, ‘Ethics,’ 1949; edited

“And in the naked light I saw, ten thousand people, maybe more; People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share; No one dared disturb the Sound of Silence.” – PAUL SIMON & ART GARFUNKEL, ‘The Sound of Silence,’ 1964; edited

  1. FIRST THOUGHTS

A very long time ago during my doctoral studies days at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, likely around 1972, I discovered a fascinating monograph by research psychiatrist by GERALD ZUK “On the Pathology of Silencing Strategies,” published in ‘Family Process,’ March 1965.

Listen to his prescient Definition of what those Strategies are, and how they are carried out.

“Those maneuvers designed to punish an individual for some ‘transgression’ by isolating him in Silence. The motivation for Silencing Strategies is complex [but include]…Induced compliance or conformity [and] possession of the victim as an object for the needed projected feeling of being bad or inanimate.” – p. 1; edited

THESIS. Let me say at the outset that the Great Sin of the American Church today is its intractable, self-protective, and frankly cowardly SILENCE in the face of unprecedented Corruption in National and Church Leadership.

I intend to build this argument around THREE SECTIONS:

  • THE SILENCE OF REBELLION. That Silence that we have witnessed throughout the majority of our Church in the bloody aftermath of January 6, 2021, at our Nation’s Capitol. Our pastors and leaders have decided to ‘Not speak’ when all Biblical admonition commands us to break our Insipid Quietude and not just speak, but Shout.
  • THE SILENCE OF REVERENCE. Oppositely, this will describe the rich and honorable, reverent indeed, Silence that we see described in the Scriptures just before a Great Judgment or Calamity is about to take place. A standing in Respectful Awe of it. Certain Eschatological ‘Interims’ will be noted as illustration of such ‘Moments.’
  • THE SILENCING OF A PRESIDENT. Here I refer to what has happened in the Aftermath of what is now being appropriately called, America’s ‘Day of Insurrection.’ Former President Trump has been virtually Muted from nearly all social media platforms, ‘Silenced’ if you will. My concern is for what Trump and Army of Insurrectionists plan to do in the months ahead, in response to such large scale Shunning and Snubbing.

Let’s turn then to our first major consideration in this series: The Silence of the American Church.

  1. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

Let me start what promises to be an unrelenting Indictment of the American Church for her staggering failure to become desperately needed ‘Salt and Light’ in the midst of what is unquestionably our most serious Existential Crisis since the Civil War.

SUSAN (WRIGHT) BAGWELL. This gifted friend and writer published a broadside at the Church a year and a half ago that is so on the historic and biblical Mark, that I want to quote it at some length as our platform for what follows.

“Where are the strong Christian voices, standing on what is biblically right, rather than politically expedient? That’s a question the Church in the United States needs to be asking herself. When did our Witness to the world become secondary to political gain? This is a theme that I’ve visited often in my work. Anyone who has read my writing for any length of time can affirm this…

It didn’t begin with Donald Trump. From the issue of Slavery to even Hitler’s March through Europe, American Christians dragged their feet about responding from the Pulpit. Were those issues too political? Or was the Church Complicit?” – “The Silence of the American Church is Deafening,” ‘Patheos,’ August 5, 2019; edited

Silences that were Deafening, indeed. Even after the Barbarism of January 6, our Pastors and Prelates simply cannot find their voice – or their courage. Why is this, beloved? Why do the vast majority of our Christian Leaders demonstrate such Timorous Fear in this time of maximum need for that voice?

What in the name of Almighty God are American Pastors afraid of? Or perhaps I should ask, who. Certainly not God.

ORIGINS OF COLLAPSE. You know me well by now: I am fascinated with Starting Points of some phenomenon, those ‘First Seeds’ that give birth to some Idea or Movement, whether good or evil. So let me scurry about in the archives a bit, to find out some answers to this important question.

  • HIGHER CRITICISM. Though this subject be vast and wide indeed, it is an excellent subject for our study. JOHN W. STEWART, writing for ‘Encyclopedia.com’ (March 1, 2020) summarized it thus: “Higher Criticism is a term applied to a type of Biblical studies that emerged in mostly German academic circles in the late eighteenth century, blossomed in English-speaking academies during the nineteenth, and faded out in the early twentieth. Early modern Biblical studies were customarily divided into two branches. ‘Lower’ or Textual Criticism addressed critical issues surrounding the Bible’s extant manuscripts, canon, and variant readings. The other genre was called ‘Higher’ Criticism, which, as Benjamin Jowett of Oxford University once said, sought to investigate and interpret Biblical documents ‘like any other document of antiquity.’” DK: The effect of such a Seismic Shift in hermeneutics was intended to Dethrone God, if that were possible.
  • SUBSEQUENT DECLINE. What followed in Western and American thinking, both Secular and Christian, was further erosion of the Baseline Presupposition that God’s Words were Supernatural. Biblical scholar and old friend and colleague, KERBY ANDERSON, President of Probe Ministries and host of Point of View Radio Talk Show, wrote of the NEXT MILESTONES contributing to the Decimation of Biblical integrity. “To understand how we have arrived at this appalling situation, we need to go back a century and look at the influence of five intellectual leaders who still profoundly affect the modern world.”

The first person is CHARLES DARWIN (1809-1882). In 1859 he published The Origin of Species and later published The Descent of Man in effective defiance of the Creation Doctrine…The second person is KARL MARX (1818-1883). He and Friedrich Engels published the Communist Manifesto around 1850, and Marx devoted his life to writing about the demise of Capitalism and coming of a God-free Communism…The third person is JULIUS WELLHAUSEN (1844-1918)…Wellhausen argued that the early books of the Bible were not put together by Moses but were gathered together many centuries later by several different men called redactors who wove various strands together. He and his disciples established an Anti-Supernatural approach to the Scriptures which is influential in most denominational seminaries today. The fourth person is SIGMUND FREUD (1856-1939). He merely took the logical implications of what Darwin was doing in biology and applied them to what today is known as Psychology and Psychiatry…A fifth person is JOHN DEWEY (1859-1952). He is the founder of modern education and published his first work, The School and Society, in 1899, embracing Evolutionary Naturalism rather than the Absolutism of the Bible. John Dewey was also one of the co-signers of the Humanist Manifesto in 1933, a radical repudiation of Judeo-Christian Orthodoxy.

The theories of these five men continue to have devastating consequences in our Nation and World. Because, beloved: Ideas have consequences, and really, really Bid Ideas have really, really Big Consequences.

  • SEEKER SENSITIVE CHRISTIANITY. Though I am hopscotching over decades of Doctrinal Decay here, what we have now is an American Church consumed by making what New Age psychologist DR. ABRAHAM MASLOW called, ‘Self-Actualized’ believers rather than true disciples of the Messiah. T.A. MCMAHON of ‘The Berean Call’ (March 1, 2004) writes: “TWO CHURCHES are seen as models for this movement: Willow Creek Community Church (near Chicago), pastored by BILL HYBELS, and Saddleback Valley Community Church (south of Los Angeles), pastored by RICK WARREN. Their influence is stunning. Willow Creek has formed its own association of churches, with 9,500 members. Last year, 100,000 church leaders attended at least one Willow Creek leadership conference. More than 250,000 pastors and church leaders from over 125 countries have attended Rick Warren’s Purpose Driven Church seminars. More than 60,000 pastors subscribe to his weekly email newsletter. DK: By this time, the American Church had largely abandoned the Classical Model of the Faith to ‘Make disciples and teach them Obedience’ to make them comfortable and successful. – cf. Matthew 28:19-20
  • A CHURCH WITH NO CHEST. When DR. GEORGE BARNA came out with his stunning survey results in 2014 (‘American Pastors Network,’ August 21, 2014), the Church and Pastorate were for all intents and purposes neutered. “New research shows that while 90 percent of pastors believe the Bible has much to say about today’s pressing political and societal issues, less than 10 percent are talking about those issues from the pulpit…Barna added that many pastors are afraid to get involved in political issues because of the controversy it might create. And, he added, ‘Controversy keeps people from being in the seats, controversy keeps people from giving money, from attending programs,’ Barna said. He also found that when asked how they measure the success of their churches, most pastors look to five factors: ‘Attendance, Giving, Number of Programs, Number of Staff and Square Footage.’” DK: Crass Survivalism seemed to have overtaken the Church’s raison d’être – Thus cometh Donald Trump, and all that followed.

SELAH. Much to ponder here, beloved, in our Précis of Church Decline. Always remember that All things have Origins in God’s Cause-Effect Universe. I have done what I can to ‘set the stage,’ as it were, for “the rest of the story” in subsequent sections of our study.

  1. THE TEACHING

THE DRILL DOWN. Now, that’s a great deal to cover, so as the Professor of Record, I will again Highlight what I consider the most PERTINENT TERMS that strike to the heart of our Teaching today. So here we go.

  • TAKE NO PART! I include the exclamation since I am convinced that is the spirit and tone in which the Lord spoke this to Paul. From the key term here in the Greek, ‘Sugkoinóneó’ [συγκοινωνέω]: “To be a partaker with, have fellowship with, am an accomplice in; properly, to share with by jointly partaking; to participate with, closely identified with someone (i.e., ‘deeply sharing with’); stronger than ‘Koinóneó;’ a much more intimate connection re: one’s very identity.” DK: Thereby one takes on the very Nature and Reputation of ‘the other’ in such fellowship. And God says, unequivocally: ‘Absolutely not! Ever!’
  • DEEDS OF DARKNESS. From the Greek term, ‘Skotos’ [σκότος]: Any business, enterprise, campaign, project, work or action pertaining to “Darkness [evil], either physical or moral; properly, darkness as obscurity; (figuratively) the principle of sin with its certain results; that which has the ‘Power (of Night),’ rendering men bold to commit crimes; metaphorically, of ignorance respecting divine things and human duties, and the accompanying ungodliness and immorality, together with their consequent misery; implies ignorance or serious error, leading to things practiced by wicked men in secret.” DK: Once again, the context and spirit of this is, “Do not touch!” since by doing so, we stain the very name of Jesus Christ in the eyes of all who see us.
  • RATHER, EXPOSE. By stunning contrast, we are commended to ‘Expose’ such dark things by our very life and conduct. From the Greek, ‘Elegchó’ [ἐλέγχω]: “To reprove or rebuke; discipline, expose, show to be guilty; properly, to convince with solid, compelling evidence, especially to expose (prove wrong, correct; to reprimand or show fault; reprehend, chide, admonish; chasten or punish; to confute; implies acknowledgement by the accused, inwardly, of its truth [implications for repentance for the good of the accused].”
  • SHAMEFUL. The Apostle goes on to passionately prohibit even ‘speaking’ about such dark things with any sort of glee or approval, bringing that shame upon one’s Testimony or the Name of God. From the Greek, ‘Aischron’ [αἰσχρόν]: “Indecorum; a painful sensation excited by a consciousness of guilt, or of having done something which injures reputation; or by of that which nature or modesty prompts us to conceal. Shame is particularly excited by the disclosure of actions which, in the view of men, are mean and degrading; that which brings reproach, and degrades a person in the estimation of others. Thus an Idol is called a Shame; reproach; ignominy; derision; contempt.”
  • MANIFEST LIGHT. In keeping with Christ’s admonition to “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works [and moral excellence] and glorify you Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). From the term, ‘Phós’ [φῶς]: “A source of radiance, as with the sun or the light of day; specifically, the Manifestation of God’s self-existent life; divine illumination; also firelight or heavenly light (as with Moses’ face, become ‘radiant,’ from ‘Qaran’ [קָרַן], rays of Divine light); never kindled, therefore never quenched, rather kindled ‘by the hands of Another.’”
  • ‘AWAKE, O SLEEPER!’ This, this precisely here, is the Message of Yahweh to the American Church today, currently regarded by our Sovereign as “a Corpse.” The key Greek term her, in the form of a Royal Command is, ‘Egeiró’ [ἐγείρω]: “To waken, arouse, rise or stand up [from a prone position]; to arise up from a deep sleep [or a sleep of death]; to become attentive to one’s own dangerous position in order to be delivered therefrom; denotes to quit one’s previous position, and get up; to cause to appear and bring before the public [make declaration]; to incite, ‘Stir up’ against (the Darkness).”

‘THE STIRRING.’ Borrowing from that last line, this is the term that was brought to mind as I wrote all this down. THIS is what God is doing, beloved: ‘Stirring us to Full Resistance of Last Days Darkness. As in a ‘Third Great Awakening.’ But not an Awakening of the general culture, beloved, No, no. This is a Call to An Awakening of His Church! His Houses! His people!

  1. COMMENTARY

As always, it is important to turn to our Teachers of the Scriptures, who offer often Insights we too easily miss. This time, however, I settled on a Single Voice that brings eloquence and the sharpness of God’s Sword to and understanding of our present perils of Compromised Silences and Fouled Alliances.

Here is a bit of an introduction to this wise scholar of The Word.

MATTHEW HENRY. Matthew Henry (1662-1714), beloved commentator on the Scriptures, was born near Whitchurch (Salop), England.  He was a prolific writer, most famous for his Commentary on the Whole Bible (1708-1710) which he began in November of 1704 and left incomplete upon his death. Ministerial colleagues concluded the work with reference to his notes and writings (Henry had finished the commentary from Genesis through Acts). Throughout his life as a minister, Henry was a diligent student of the Word, sometimes rising as early as 4 o’clock in the morning and often spending 8 hours a day in his study in addition to his pastoral labors. He was also, however, a man of prayer. His lifelong concern for prayer is said to have originated with his recovery from a potentially terminal illness at the age of 10. – Adapted from ‘Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals,’ 2020; edited

The reason I mentioned his biography in some detail, is because another favorite Bible scholar of mine, WILLIAM MACDONALD, had a similar childhood healing encounter with the Lord. Here is a brief account of that life-changing event.

“William (Bill) MacDonald was born on January 7, 1917 in Leominster, Massachusetts. In 1922, in the Western Hebrides, William was dying of diphtheria. A mucous membrane was forming across his throat, and breathing was becoming increasingly difficult. His Christian mother turned her back so she would not see William take his last breath. At that very moment there was a knock at the door. It was her brother-in-law from an adjoining village. He said, ‘I’ve just come to tell you that you don’t have to worry about William. He is going to recover, and one day God is going to save his soul.’ Mom was distracted and incredulous: ‘Whatever makes you say that?’ Then he explained he had been sitting at his fire reading Psalm 91 when God distinctly spoke to him through the last three verses. God saved William’s soul thirteen years after.”

MY POINT. Something to be said about God’s Dramatic Rescue of a Soul, and the subsequent tendency to want to ‘Pay it back,’ if you will. I know that is the case with this old writer, when He rescued me just hours before I was to take my own life in 1979. Just cannot do enough for Him ever since, and I know so many of you feel the same way.

Now to Henry’s Commentary. Enjoy this, beloved; I surely did. It speaks most profoundly to something we have been discussing much lately: THE MESSIAH’S PREPARATION OF HIS BRIDE.

“Filthy lusts must be rooted out. These sins must be dreaded and detested. Here are not only cautions against gross acts of sin, but against what some may make light of. But these things are so far from being profitable. That they pollute and poison the hearers. Our cheerfulness should show itself as becomes Christians, in what may tend to God’s glory. A covetous man makes a god of his money; places that hope, confidence, and delight, in worldly good, which should be in God only. Those who allow themselves, either in the lusts of the flesh or the love of the World, belong NOT to the Kingdom of Grace, nor shall they come to the Kingdom of Glory.

When the vilest transgressors repent and believe the Gospel, they become children of obedience, from whom God’s Wrath is turned away. Dare we make light of that which brings down the Wrath of God? Sinners, like men in the dark, are going they know not whither, and doing they know not what. But the grace of God wrought a mighty change in the souls of many. Walk as children of light, as having knowledge and holiness. These Works of Darkness are unfruitful, whatever profit they may boast; for they end in the destruction of the impenitent sinner. There are many ways of abetting, or taking part in the sins of others; by commendation, counsel, consent, or concealment. And if we Share with others in their Sins, we must expect to Share in their Plagues.

If we do not Reprove the sins of others, we have Fellowship with them. A good man will be ashamed to speak of what many wicked men are not ashamed to do. We must have not only a sight and a knowledge that sin is sin, and in some measure shameful, but see it as a Breach of God’s Holy Law. After the example of Prophets and Apostles, we should call on those asleep and dead in sin, to Awake and Arise, that Christ may give them Light.” – ‘Commentary on the Whole Bible (Concise),’ 1706; edited

And all of God’s true people said, ‘Amen.’

  1. LAST THOUGHTS

Another Personal Anecdote as I begin to conclude this first installment on ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’ I mentioned before that I have wanted for many years to get up each day, and be personally directed by God as to what to read for that day. And I think I am getting there, and here’s why.

Today, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2021, I distinctly ‘heard’ the Voice say, “TITUS 1.” No particular verse, just that, a reference to the Chapter. When I visited it around 5 am that morning, my eyes glommed onto Verse 13.

“And this account of [the false teachers and prophets] is [really] true. Because it is [true], rebuke them sharply [deal sternly, even severely with them], so that they may be sound in the faith and free from error.” – TITUS 1:13, AMPC

FURY VS. FRIENDLINESS. Now this may surprise some of you, but I tell you true: I have been concerned about why my Teaching has been so visibly (and audibly) Fierce in recent days. That is not my normal manner of instruction, and I frequently expressed my concerns over it to God and some of you.

Then the Titus passage came, as if to reinforce a Message from the King to us all:

“You must Rebuke the fallen sharpy now, even severely, to wake them up, for they shall not otherwise listen. Time is running very short, so Do as I Command.”

THREE COMMENTARIES. As I processed all this, I ran to those faithful standby’s, The Sages, and I could hardly believe what I found. Each of these men Punctuate the very sharpest of points that the American Church has completely forgotten – or rejected: REBUKE OF THE REPROBATES (‘The Unprincipled’).

  • CHARLES ELLICOTT. “As a surgeon’s knife cuts away the diseased and mortifying flesh, so must the words and discipline of Titus, the Apostle’s representative in Crete, sharply rebuke, and, if need be, punish the sinning members of the congregation. Not merely the False Teachers—the Deceivers—are referred to here, but also the Deceived, those whole households mentioned in Titus 1:11.” – ‘Commentary on the Whole Bible,’ 1878, 1897; edited
  • ALBERT BARNES. “‘Wherefore rebuke them’ – Notes, 2 Timothy 4:2. Sharply – ἀποτόμως ‘Apotomōs’ – ‘cuttingly, severely’ – from ἀποτέμνω ‘Apotemnō,’ ‘to cut off.’ The word is used here in the sense of severity, meaning that the Reproof should be such as would be understood, and would show them plainly the wickedness of such traits of character. He was not to be mealy-mouthed, but he was to call things by their right names, and not to spare their faults. When men know that they are doing wrong, we should tell them so in few words; if they do not know it, it is necessary to teach them, in order to convince them of their error. That they may be sound in the faith – That they may not allow the prevailing vices to corrupt their views of religion.” – ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 26 vols., c. 1830s; edited
  • JOHN GILL. “Wherefore rebuke them sharply’: not merely upon the testimony of the poet, but upon the confirmation of it by the Apostle; and not because of these general and national characters, but because these things personally and particularly belonged to the persons before described; whom the Apostle would have rebuked, both for their Bad Principles, teaching things that they ought not; and for their Immoralities, their lying and deceit, their intemperance, luxury, and idleness, things very unbecoming the Christian name; and therefore since their offences were of an heinous nature, and they lived in them, and were hardened and obstinate, and were like to have a bad influence on others, they must be ‘Rebuked sharply.’” – ‘An Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 1746-1763; edited

“THE CHRISTIAN INSURRECTION.” This is what the well-regarded ‘Atlantic’ magazine recently called the savagery of January 6, 2020 – and I angrily and wholeheartedly agree.

My Outrage is palpable about this. Because the Church at this precarious time, nearly 40 days and nights later, has unbelievably, willfully and timidly Chosen Silence in the wake of the Bloody Anarchy of that Dark Day. This is, to be blunt, both sickening and seditious of all God has taught us, beloved.

REP. ADAM KINZINGER. While this Christian politician is no angel – he voted for Trump in the 2020 Election – he represents an Awakened ‘lone voice crying in the American wilderness.’ Here is what a recent ‘Atlantic’ reporter wrote of him.

“Looking to political personalities rather than Jesus for salvation is the worst kind of mistake a Christian can make, Kinzinger said. ‘There are many people that have made America their god, that have made the economy their god, that have made Donald Trump their god, and that have made their political identity their god.’ The problems that led to the January 6 Insurrection are not just political. They’re cultural. Roughly half of Protestant pastors said they regularly hear people promote conspiracy theories in their churches, a recent survey by the Southern Baptist firm LifeWay Research found. “I believe there is a huge burden now on Christian leaders, especially those who entertained the conspiracies, to lead the flock back into the truth,” Kinzinger tweeted on January 12…

On January 6, as an armed mob invaded the House of Representatives, Kinzinger said he could feel a Darkness descend over the Capitol. One of his friends in Congress, the Oklahoma Republican Markwayne Mullin, heard the same thing from members of the Capitol Police. Kinzinger doesn’t doubt that the Devil is at work in American politics. He just suspects that the enemy might be lurking in his own house.” – EMMA GREEN, “Betraying Your Church – And Your Party,” ‘The Atlantic,’ January 28, 2021; edited

CODA. This “Christian’ Insurrection” was America’s Tipping Point, possibly our very Last Chance to shake off the Sin that has so easily beset the Church: Avarice for material gain and political power. The ‘Good Life’ Now, rather than the Hereafter.

America is Dying, beloved, because the Church is Dying. She will not Speak Plain, having gone visibly (and audibly) deaf, dumb and blind to This Present Darkness that is engulfing the Nation, even the whole Earth. And if she does not Awaken ever so soon, we shall surely be visited by Another Silence, the subject of Part II in our series. I fervently pray that we shall Stir before that comes to us.
