PART II: “THE SILENCE OF REVERENCE.”

FIRST THOUGHTS

I suppose it would be the sin of the obvious to say that the Nation and world are immersed in and surrounded by Great Storms today – Coronavirus, Politics, Weather aberrations,especially in this hour, the Economy, and unprecedented Divisiveness – to name just a few. And they collectively have the force of a Tsunami on our daily lives and personal ability to handle them.

But what if I were to say there are still Larger Storms on the way, should Americans not respond properly to those already present? I know: Aren’t I a happy little camper to be reading at times like these. In my defense, I’d rather offer you the Truth rather than the pretty little things most churches are serving up today, that are not only false, but if believed, could lead to your destruction.

I like what JOHN STEINBECK wrote of this Principle in his classic, slightly veiled Biblical morality play, ‘East of Eden’ (1952). “An unbelieved truth can hurt a man much more than a lie. It takes great courage to back truth unacceptable to our times. There’s a punishment for it, and it’s usually crucifixion.”

With that in mind, then, let’s proceed to a consideration of the great value of ‘The Quiet’ that always precedes a Great Storm.

A NATION OF NOISE

We live in a terribly Noisy World today. In fact, decades of research show that the planet is becoming noisier pretty much every day. And there are many different kinds of ‘Noise’ in our world.

KIMBERLY DYKE, writing for an online educational journal, ‘Classroom Synonyms’ (June 25, 2018), lists and defines Three Kinds of Noise, beginning with the following DEFINITION.

“A broad definition of Noise in Communication is something that keeps a receiver from completely comprehending a message. Noise comes in many forms. Distractions can inhibit a person from offering his undivided attention and may keep him from fully grasping what you are trying to say. These disturbances guarantee that the receiver will either misinterpret your information or not understand it at all.”

PHYSICAL NOISE. “Sometimes the biggest impediment to clear communication is everyday Environmental Noise. This can include loud passersby, music (think talking over a band at a concert), traffic or children playing. Even a simple phone ringing can distract a listener so that she cannot fully focus on a conversation. Annoying whispering and classroom side bar conversations can interfere with the ability of the instructor and other students to focus on the material during a lecture. Other physical conditions that can hinder communication are physical illness, hearing impairments, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or being tired.”

SEMANTIC NOISE. “Semantic Noise affects communication when people communicate from different playing fields [or worldviews]. For example, a patient without knowledge of medical terminology may have no idea what the doctor is saying. In other words, they are working from different understandings, such as different vocabularies, primary languages or dialects. Noise can also occur when pedantic vocabulary or regional colloquialisms break down communication. Cross-cultural communication noise can include mistaken interpretations of voice tone, eye contact and body language. Illegible handwriting and using slang can also be semantic noises that complicate effective communication.”

PSYCHOLOGICAL NOISE. “Psychological Noise can be more difficult to define in a particular situation, as the mental makeup of every person is different. This type of noise includes concepts like prejudices, narrow-mindedness and personal bias. Communication can also be difficult if a person is feeling very emotional — anger, sadness and even joy can affect how much someone can pay attention during a conversation. Individuals with psychological problems such as severe mental illness may have trouble understanding others or communicating their own thoughts.”

LAST DAYS ‘NOISE.’ As I read these rather precise and quite useful definitions, I kept thinking of the sorts of Noise that is largely plaguing the American Experience more than any of these three, though it does implicate and wreak havoc on Numbers 2 and 3.

Let me give you a Sample of this sort of Eschatological Noise that I believe is destroying our Nation and the World, as it seems to have exploded on the scene in only the last five years or so.

“The new Coronavirus is real. The response to the Coronavirus is hyped. And in time, this Hype will be revealed as politically hoaxed. In fact, COVID-19 will go down as one of the political world’s biggest, most shamefully overblown, overhyped, overly and irrationally inflated and outright deceptively flawed responses to a health matter in American history, one that was carried largely on the lips of medical professionals who have no business running a national economy or government.” – CHERYL K. CHUMLEY, “Coronavirus Hype Biggest Political Hoax in History,” ‘Washington Times,’ April 28, 2020

Since that massive failure at armchair medical prophecy, the writer has penned such pieces as: “Christian Nationalism is the Left’s Next Anti-American Play” (February 3, 2021); “Liz Cheney Epitomizes Political Elitism” (February 10, 2021); and my favorite, “ISIS: We’re Baaack” (February 12, 2021) under President Biden.

In that latest missive on ISIS, she led with this:

“It’s really no coincidence that as soon as strong-on-foreign-policy Donald Trump exited the White House office and weak-with-overseas-players Joe Biden entered that headlines started blasting this: “ISIS could regain capacity to orchestrate attacks in 2021.”

TRUMP NOISE

These publications and thousands and thousands more just like them from the likes of Fox, One America, Red Slate, American Thinker, Red State, Breitbart, National Enquirer, Tea Party, The Washington Times as we have just seen, Conservative Firing Line, IOTW Report, Patriot News Channel, Trump Nation News, Paranoia Magazine, Zero Hedge, Infowars, Newsmax, Pro-Trump News, and many others represent a concomitant ‘New Journalism’ for the Alt Reich that I find deeply troubling.

MY POINT. If Donald Trump desires to move forward with his ‘MAGA Movement,’ he still has countless ‘news’ outlets for his propaganda, and potentially 74 million American voters and 80% of the Christian Church to support him. To say nothing of the number of military vets and militia groups who are rabid backers.

In Sum: He has an Army that has not been substantially decimated by the January 6 Insurrection planned and carried out by that hybrid Army.

THE NOISE OF ANTICHRIST. Now this is not to ‘name’ Trump as that “man of sin, the son of perdition” described by the Apostle Paul (2 Thessalonians 2:3) – yet – but rather to argue that the most dangerous and seditious Noise of all is that which flows from False News Nets, the proliferation of False Teachers and Prophets in the body, and a staggering, collective Ignorance the Sound Doctrine in the Church.

As I mentioned to a close friend on the phone just the other night, Truth is getting harder and harder to find, confirm and settle on in such a massive Information Ecology of Deception and Political Legerdemain.

The Prophets Isaiah and Amos wrote of such a time long ago.

“Yes, truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. And the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no justice…[For] Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but [a famine] for hearing the words of the Lord.” – ISAIAH 59:15; AMOS 8:11, AMPC

Into this Cacophony of False Reports heard virtually everywhere today, we find Americans trying desperately at times, to find Relief, Repose and even Escape from all the Madness – the subject of our next section.

FINDING NEVERLAND

My purposeful use of the title from the 2004 fantasy drama film of that name is to underscore the frantic American search for Respite from the simultaneous onsets of Coronavirus, insanely dangerous weather patterns and the vicious politics and economic instability gaslighted by Trump. Many of us know of individuals and even friends who are talking more and more about ‘Moving’ to a safer or quieter place,’ a more trouble-free environment to attenuate The Madness.

UNBECOMING AMERICAN. A somewhat sad but notable sidebar to this new trend is found in a report from ‘U.S. News & World Report’ entitled, “Americans Renouncing Citizenship in Record Numbers” (September 9, 2020). Journalist BRETT GOODIN writes:

“A record number of Americans are renouncing their citizenship. In just the first half of this year, 5,315 Americans gave up their citizenship. That puts the country on track to see a record-breaking 10,000 people renounce U.S. citizenship in 2020. Until a decade ago, fewer than 1,000 Americans per year, on average, chose to renounce their citizenship…With 10,000 U.S. passports expected to be dumped this year and another 23% of American expats – about 2 million people – saying they are ‘seriously considering’ renouncing citizenship, unbecoming American is starting to sound as American as apple pie.”

WHY? What is the reason for the growing Exodus from a country whose citizenship used to be the supreme prize for countless millions streaming to our shores? Mr. Goodin predictably cites “the financial factor” as the chief reason, and there is certainly truth to that in a taxed-to-the-death, increasingly challenged job market.

But I see other reasons, more deep-seated and much more troubling.

LOSING OUR RELIGION. There is an engaging song released in 1991 by the alternative rock group, R.E.M. by this title that serves as a benchmark of sorts for an important Trend in the Church that is borne out by many research reports.

Here is a sample of the lyrics from that musical lament.

“That’s me in the corner
That’s me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don’t know if I can do it
Oh no, I’ve said too much
I haven’t said enough.”

INTERPRETATION. Mike Stipe of R.E.M. interprets this stanza in this way: “‘Losing my Religion’ is a southern American way of saying ‘Reaching the end of one’s rope’ or ‘losing your temper’ or ‘losing your civility’. Basically, these verses mean that he is getting angry and frustrated trying to stay ahead of the game…He’s behind the game, in the spotlight, failing.”

Though this song was composed as tale of unrequited love, it is not a stretch to extend the meaning to America’s Loss of God, followed by “getting angry and frustrated” trying to figure out the sense of what sociologist ROBERT BELLAH defined as a newfound ‘Loss of Place’ again, and the collective and increasing and ‘sense of failure. – cf. ‘Habits of the Heart,’ 1985

Thus, into this accelerating Noisy Chaos and Uncertainty and Loss steps a loving but stern God, seeking to give us one last opportunity to Discover the reasons for the Madness, and the Solution to it.

THE PURPOSE OF QUIET

Recent remarks by PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN reflect the proper discernment that Americans are losing hope midst all the fearful conditions.

“‘It’s very clear that our economy is in trouble,’ he said during a speech at the White House, highlighting the difficulties for Americans during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Biden spoke about the Hopelessness in the country, pointing to the rise in suicides, drug overdoses, domestic violence, and mental health problems in the country. He proposed the government as the solution, announcing that he would move forward on his $1.9 trillion Rescue Package. ‘A lot of folks are losing hope and I believe the American people are looking right now to their government for help,’ he said.” – JOSEPH SPIERING, ‘Breitbart,’ February 5, 2021; edited

For all his good intentions, though compromised by statist politics, his measures reflect the depth of American despair but also, American and even Church ignorance concerning WHY all this is happening to us at the same, increasingly intense, time. And WHAT we must do in order to begin to effectively counter it.

THE NEED FOR QUIET. In a review of several pieces on how the mere experience of ‘Quiet’ can bring much needed conditions for intellectual and spiritual Refreshment, the following Checklist is helpful review about Why God must bring some necessary ‘Calm before the Coming Storms.’

“Every few months, a swelling of overwhelm inside pushes me to Retreat. I pull back from anything and everything and hibernate for a while. Doing as little as necessary in order to rejuvenate my mind and body… [Tweet ‘The Internet can be extremely noisy even though it doesn’t make a sound.’]. It can also be cruel. “‘We need Quiet Time to examine our lives openly and honestly – spending Quiet Time alone gives your mind an opportunity to renew itself and create order.’ – SUSAN L. TAYLOR. Let’s face it. There’s a lot of Noise and Distraction in the world. Sometimes, the din is so loud and the interruptions so many and varied that it’s tough to tend to what’s necessary and right, much less what is desired. The yearning for Peace and Quiet, however, has more significance than just taking a well-deserved break. It’s an important and integral part of growth, renewal and joy of living.” – SUZANNE KANE, “7 Reasons Why You Need Quiet Time,” ‘Psych Central,’ June 8, 2017; edited

“The non-stop togetherness of households in the Pandemic is causing extra stress, experts say. For nearly a year now, members of the same households have been working, learning and living in the same shared space. If that’s true for you, it may be time to create a Quiet Space in your home…According

to RACHEL CANNON, a Louisiana-based interior design consultant, having a quiet place in the home means just that — a physical space where you can be alone. Ideally, this should be a room with a door that can be closed. ‘It’s a place you can walk into, sit down and close the door. Look for low traffic areas in your house where you can build your nest of Solitude.’” – JULIA BAYLY, “Why You Need a Quiet Room in Your Home,” ‘Bangor Daily News,’ February 142, 2021; edited

This reminds of a Word the Lord shared with me after having to spend five years in Virginia apart from my family due to a rough job market in 2006-2011: “Splendid Isolation.” Used by Him to shore up many fissures in my character, perspective and spiritual armor.

All of which serves as an ideal Bridge to the final sections of our conversation, and the Biblical Framework for its importance.

THE TEACHING

Under nearly any circumstances, this passage is inherently terrifying if applied to our own condition and time. Bible scholar WILLIAM MACDONALD punctuates this fact in no uncertain terms.

“[The Prophet] uses the expression, ‘the Day of the Lord’ seven times in his little book. This gives the Theme of the book: God’s Judgment is coming on Judah for Disobedience. Other key expressions are ‘jealousy’ and ‘in the midst.’ God is jealous in the sense that He resents the Idolatry of His people. He is ‘in the midst’ first as a Righteous Judge (3:5) and then as a Conqueror of their foes [upon their repentance].” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 1148; edited

THE DRILL DOWN. In view of the Severity of this Moment (including ours today), we are now prepared to take a closer look at the subparts and key terms used by the Lord to unmistakably communicate the Gravity of this Warning for America.

BE SILENT! This exclamatory command in the Hebrew again underscores the Fury of God toward the people’s Sin of Idolatry. Such exclamation is virtually excised from most Church sermons today, to our staggering loss of the Truth of God’s Character as Judge. From the term, ‘Has’ [הָסָה]: “Hush! Keep silence! Hold your peace! Be still! [in the presence of the Most High God].” DK: It very nearly translates in the modern vernacular: ‘Shut up!’ The imperative or interjection used here strongly denotes, so in sync with our previous discussion, this literal interpretation: ‘Make no more Noise!’ – as with empty or misguided worship and weak teaching in so many churches today that ostensibly exculpates the Pastor from his lapses in Sound Doctrine. Just so long as he ever so safely and repeatedly preaches “Love is all you need.” – a Beatles song, by the way. Truth? Too tough a duty for most.

A SACRIFICE. Here we find a bit of a Mystery on first glance. A “sacrifice,” you say? From the Hebrew, ‘Zebach’ [זֶבַח]: “Properly, a slaughter, i.e., the flesh of an animal; by implication, a blood sacrifice (the victim or the act); the killing of some living thing (for sacred or profane rites) for a meal or repast; to offer to God in homage or worship, by killing and consuming, as victims on an altar; to immolate, either as an atonement for sin, or to procure favor, or to express thankfulness; To destroy, surrender or suffer to be lost for the sake of obtaining something.” In this passage the sacrifice is described, somewhat ironically or even sarcastically as, “guests” [‘Qara’ קָרָא – to call aloud with a great roar].” DK: A reference to both the Disobedient among God’s people, and subsequently, the Enemy used to punish them.

THE COMMENTARY. “‘Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord’ — Keep Silence in token of an awful reverence toward God. ‘For the day of the Lord is at hand’ — Now he is coming to execute His Judgments upon the land. Humble thyself under His mighty hand, without repining or murmuring at His corrections, which thy sins do so justly deserve. ‘For the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice’ — The slaughter of the wicked is called a sacrifice, because it is, in some sense, an Atonement to God’s Justice. ‘He hath bid his guests’ — This is an allusion to the custom of those who offered sacrifices, which was to invite their friends to partake of the feasts which accompanied them. So here God is said to invite His guests, that is, the Babylonians, who were to reap the spoils of the Destruction of Judah and Jerusalem, and of the Desolation of Judea: or, as some explain it, the guests may mean ravenous birds, wild beasts, and dogs, collected to devour the carcasses of the slain.” DK: ‘Fear God, and get your houses fully in order before He Comes!’ – cf. DK’S TAKE. Now this is not for the faint of heart, beloved. The Lord is clearly describing His Wrath falling upon HIS OWN PEOPLE by giving them over to their Enemy. Refers to all those who earned His Ire by their sustained Idolatry. That is, by Replacing Him with a ‘False Messiah,’ or what one might ably refer to as ‘an Antichrist’ in New Testament terms.

John the Revelator describes this heinous Betrayal.

“They fell down and paid homage to the dragon, because he had bestowed on the beast all his dominion and authority; they also praised and worshiped the beast, exclaiming, Who is a match for the beast, and, Who can make war against him? – REVELATION 13:4, AMPC

While this passage refers to a much later time during the Great Tribulation Era, I argue forcefully here that this Dark Obeisance has already begun, beloved. It is already underway with the vast majority of the Church giving itself over to a Political Messiah, replacing the Real One with a Malevolent Substitute.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF. Without more fully citing once again the famous Dictum by Santayana, let me say this: At Jesus’ First Appearance, the Jews were looking for a Political Messiah to free them from the Roman Occupation. This point is not lost on me as I see the American Church now desiring the very same thing, for a Man (not a God) to secure for them the rights and privileges of freedom and citizenship guaranteed in the United States Constitution.

Note: Freedom and ‘my rights’ first, not God’s will first. Selah.

Thus they are willing to place THAT GOAL above the very Call of Christ to His true followers to ‘Make disciples’ and ‘Teach them’ the full Counsel of the Scriptures. Thus, as the Jews did at His First Advent, so are we Christians doing the very same just Prior to His Second Advent. – cf. Matthew 28:19-20

Here’s the way DAVID LEVY describes part of this expectation from a Jewish perspective, writing for his Blog, ‘Friends of Israel’ on May 1, 2020:

^“Traditional Judaism (Orthodox and Conservative) has never viewed the Messiah as a God-Man, but only a Man with unusual power from God who will manifest the qualities of a prophet, priest, and king in Israel. They have described the Messiah in a Dual Role. First, there would come the ‘Suffering Servant’ (Messiah ben Joseph) who would die in battle against the enemies of Israel preparing the way for the second Messiah. Secondly, there would come a descendant of King David who would secure the land of Israel for the Jewish people; bring peace and blessing to Israel and the world; rebuild the Temple on its historical site; and reinstitute the sacrificial system.”

Do you see it, beloved? I do, I do. And for me this is the Church today shouting, as we did in the Nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021: “Give us Barabbas, and crucify Jesus!” All over again beloved. All. Over. Again.

Selah. Selah.

THE CONSEQUENCES

Because of all this Church Treachery of the Lord and His Canon today, I can nearly audibly hear The Prophets shouting at the top of their lungs: “Be Silent before the Most High God! For He is Coming soon to Judge you all! Do you not understand this?”

PROPHETIC INTERREGNUM. So do I turn to the MESSAGE OF MALACHI for what MacDonald describes as: “Jehovah’s Last Pleading with His people in the Old Testament Period. After this, the Prophetic Voice will BE SILENT for four centuries until the coming of John the Baptist.” – 1995, p. 1174; edited

You getting this, beloved? “Silent.”

We see the Prophet first Commending the Levitical Priests (counterparts to today’s pastors and teachers) for their obedience, followed by a stinging Rebuke for their subsequent Sin, requiring God’s Judgment.

The Prophet speaks.

“The law of truth was in [Levi’s] mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness and turned many away from iniquity…[But] You have WEARIED the Lord with your words. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we wearied Him?’ [You do it when by your actions] you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord and He delights in them.’ Or [by asking], ‘Where is the God of justice?’” – MALACHI 2:6, 17, AMPC

WEARIED. This vital Hebrew word is ‘Yaga’ [יָגַע], or: “To toil, grow or become weary; to have pain, suffer; to gasp [from frustration]; hence to be fatigued; having the patience exhausted; become tired out; to faint; to make impatient of continuance; having the strength much exhausted by toil or violent exertion; having one’s interest, forbearance or indulgence worn out, having become weary of delays.”

COMMENTARY. “‘Ye have wearied the Lord with your words’ – By your blasphemous words, full of unbelief and mistrust, you have in a manner wearied God. He speaks of God, after the manner of men, as a man afflicted by the ills of others. Whence also the Lord says in Isaiah Isaiah 1:14, ‘I am weary to bear them,’ and Isaiah 43:24, ‘Thou hast made Me to serve with thy sins; thou hast wearied Me with thine iniquities.’ In like way the Apostle says in Ephesians 4:30 [‘And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God’].” – ALBERT BARNES ET AL., ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 26 vols., 1847-1885; edited

DK’S TAKE. I have been teaching for the past year or so that “God is nearly done with America,” or words to that effect. I have never set a specific timetable to it, nor will I do so here. But this much I now believe strongly, in light of this passage He literally breathed into me this past week and more the following IMPRESSION.

‘The Divine Hourglass is running thin indeed, for the Church, I say again, the Church to fess up and straighten out those bent, sanitized doctrines you’ve been preaching. They simply will not hold when God’s Dam bursts. We can already track the early leakage.’

MALACHI’S CLOSING ARGUMENT. So now to a more Encouraging Point, I should think, coming from the very next chapter in this fiery Book. Listen carefully now to the WHY AND HOW of God’s dealing with His House in these Last Days.

“He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the priests, the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord offerings in righteousness.” – MALACHI 3:3, AMPC

The Hebrew term for “Purify” in this passage is, ‘Zaqaq’ [זָקַק], meaning: “To refine, purge, pour down [fire]; to strain or extract; clarify; test for purity; to clear from guilt or punishment; to cleanse or purify by separating and carrying off whatever is impure, heterogeneous, foreign or superfluous; to clear from moral defilement.”

GOD’S OBJECTIVE. Clearly beloved, know this: These Last Days Refinements are not designed to destroy us, but to Prepare us: Pastors for preaching boldly the Truth of His Word. Penitents to live fully for Christ now, unencumbered by the World. And the Unsaved to come running for His Shelter from the Storms ahead.

And after all that, this: The Event of all events, just down His Road a bit, that I shall close with in somewhat of a Dramatic Flair, as God would have it, to properly fit The Occasion.

LAST THOUGHTS

Here is what the Lord Promises to all who are willing to Endure His Final Fire, in order to bring Life, Light and Courage to the lost and broken, while there is still Time.

“[Then] I looked when He (the Lamb) broke open the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth [made] of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree shedding its late [summer] figs when shaken by a strong wind. The sky was split [separated from the land] and rolled up like a scroll, and every mountain and island were dislodged and moved out of their places…

For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of the archangel and with the [blast of the] trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain [on the earth] will simultaneously be caught up (raptured) together with them [the resurrected ones] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord!
