PART II: “THE WAY WE ARE – A DOCUMENTARY.”

SCRIPTURE. “The [empty-headed] fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable deeds; there is none that does good or right. FIRST THOUGHTS

TODAY’S AMERICA can be described in many, many ways – depending on who you ask. ‘The Washington Post’ ran an excellent piece on December 18, 2020, requesting readers to describe that Epochal Year in a single word. Here is their Introduction to the results of this non-scientific, yet nonetheless revealing, field study.

“Many of the words submitted reflect just how horrible this year has been. ‘Dumpster fire’ was the sixth most common word or phrase, while ‘Nightmare’ was No. 11. But others were also popular, such as ‘Surreal’ (No. 5) and variations of the word ‘Relentless’ (No. 10).”

NOTE. Each of these Responses were offered BEFORE January 6, 2021, that would likely have deepened the gravitas of these already somber assessments.

EXHAUSTING. “All of our challenges have been drawn-out, slow-motion car wrecks. From covid, to the election, to Trump in general, to police shootings, to unemployment, to no sports, to some sports and no fans, it just keeps dragging on. I feel trapped in a corner, and all I can do is try to block the next thing that gets thrown at me.” – Matthew Hirvela, 55, Plymouth, Massachusetts

LOST. “We’ve lost our way as a country. The year was lost for students, families, weddings, holidays, positive human interaction. Lives were lost unnecessarily to disease. It feels like being lost in the wilderness with no compass.” – Jack Fleig, 72, West Salem, Wisconsin

CHAOTIC. “Coronavirus, aftermath of general election, inability to acquire simple provisions like toilet paper, racial injustice, Trump and the GOP, Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying and being replaced against her wishes. Families being torn apart. I do not recognize this country anymore.” – Maya Schneider, 40, Fairfax, Virginia

RELENTLESS. “The hits just kept on coming. The good, the bad, the ugly. In our family, we shared a birth and a life-altering heart surgery and a decision to move that changed our family forever. There was much soul searching and out of it came monumental changes. The year was relentless, and we had to be the same. We could not allow ourselves to succumb. We had to find creative means of succor. Succor became survival.” – Deborah Drezon Carroll, 68, Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania

SURREAL. “There have been terrible and beautiful moments in 2020 — but all of them seem larger and more disjointed than normal life progressions or conditions. Extraordinary situations and behaviors — by people, groups, even countries — have ruled the day.” – Kristin Tesmer, 51, Dallas, Texas

FALLOW. “This is how I have tried to think of this year, a fallow year, a time of temporary stillness. It is easy to think of this year as endless, but it will not be. We’ll plant again, we’ll grow again. But this year, we just had to…stop.” – Sam Phillips, 34, Los Angeles, Californnia

LIMBO. “We’re neither here nor there; neither hell nor heaven. Working toward normalcy and not sure if there will ever be what we’ve known as normal again.” – Thomas Sheffield, 68, Wells, Maine

HEARTBREAKING. “I lost a dear friend to covid, and I have lost precious time not seeing family and friends that I will not get back.” – Theresa Grimes, 65, Ocala, Florida

NIGHTMARE. “If you’ve ever experienced a nightmare that you struggled to wake up from and woke up screaming and covered in sweat, you would know why that word best describes 2020.” – Dan Hutchinson, 72, Portland, Oregon

STIFLING. “I am a health-care worker who has to wear an N95 and goggles all day. I sometimes have to wear a second mask. It forces me to shout to be heard, and it is exhausting. I also have two small kids and a disabled husband who have had to be home a good portion of the year. It all feels literally and figuratively stifling.” – Laurie P., 50, Westfield, New Jersey

UGH. “2020 has been a near-constant state of grief. The rising numbers of the pandemic, the murders of Black Americans, the 70 million people who support Trump, fires. Oh, and my job ended and before the next could begin funding was pulled. Turns out being a writer and artist will have to be a career plan.” – Bellamy Shoffner, 38, Charlottesville, Virginia

DK NOTE. For those of you who weren’t around in the Olden Times, the historical record will unmistakably show that such widespread Views of Despair have Never Before been the case in America. Not even in the Civil War Era. Not in the Depression. Not during the Great War Eras I and II. Not even in the cynical Vietnam Era in the 1960s.

Reminds of a Passage in Scripture that I have quoted before, but fits like a glove about here.

“But understand this, that in the last days dangerous times [of great stress and trouble] will come [difficult days that will be hard to bear]. For people will be lovers of self [narcissistic, self-focused], lovers of money [impelled by greed], boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy and profane, [and they will be] unloving [devoid of natural human affection, calloused and inhumane], irreconcilable, malicious gossips, devoid of self-control [intemperate, immoral], brutal, haters of good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of [sensual] pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of [outward] godliness (religion), although they have denied its power [for their conduct nullifies their claim of faith]. Avoid such people and keep far away from them.” – 2 TIMOTHY 3:1-5, AMP

So yeah, pretty much, wouldn’t you say? WILLIAM MACDONALD offers a stunning appraisal of The American Church during such a time.

“The Apostle now gives Timothy a description of Conditions that will exist in the world prior to the Lord’s Coming. It has often been pointed out that the list of sins [and signs] that follows is very similar to the description of the Ungodly Heathen in Romans 1. The remarkable thing is that the very Conditions that exist among the Heathen in their savagery and uncivilized state will characterize PROFESSING BELIEVERS in the Last Days. How solemn this is!” – ‘Believer’s Bible Commentary,’ 1995, p. 2120; edited

Y’all get that? “Professing Believers” will be the ones expressing Incivility and Savagery in the Last Days – even more so than those Outside the Church! Do you see evidence of this, beloved? I do. But don’t take my word for it, let’s take a closer look at our Day of Infamy as a Nation and a Religious Order to offer some bloody proof.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

JANUARY 6, 2021. “The Storming of the United States Capitol was a Riot and Violent Attack against the 117th United States Congress at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Part of the 2020–21 U.S. election protests, it was carried out by a mob of supporters of Donald Trump, the 45th U.S. president, in a failed attempt to overturn his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. The Capitol was placed under lockdown and lawmakers were evacuated while rioters occupied and vandalized the building. Five people died and more than 140 were injured.

Called to action by Trump, thousands of his supporters had gathered in Washington, D.C., on January 5 and 6 in support of his false claims that the 2020 election had been ‘stolen’ from him, and to demand that Vice President Mike Pence and Congress reject Joe Biden‘s victory. On the morning of January 6, at a ‘Save America’ Rally on the Ellipse, Trump repeated false claims of election irregularities, and said, ‘If you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.’ At his encouragement, thousands of protesters then walked to the Capitol, where a joint session of Congress was beginning the Electoral College vote count to formalize Biden’s victory.

Many in the crowd at the Capitol breached police perimeters and stormed the building, occupying, vandalizing, and looting for several hours, assaulting Capitol Police officers and reporters, erecting a gallows on the Capitol grounds, and attempting to locate lawmakers to take hostage and harm. They chanted ‘Hang Mike Pence!’ blaming him for not rejecting the Electoral College votes, although he lacked the constitutional authority to do so. The rioters targeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–CA), vandalizing and looting her offices, as well as those of other members of Congress.

Upon security being breached, Capitol Police evacuated the Senate and House of Representatives chambers. Several buildings in the Capitol complex were evacuated, and all were locked down. Rioters occupied and ransacked the empty Senate chamber while federal law enforcement officers drew handguns to defend the evacuated House floor. Pipe bombs were found at the offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee, and Molotov cocktails were discovered in a vehicle near the Capitol.

Trump Resisted sending the D.C. National Guard to quell the mob.

In a Twitter video, he continued to assert that the election was ‘fraudulent’ but told his supporters to ‘Go home in peace’. The Capitol was cleared of rioters by mid-evening, and the counting of the electoral votes resumed and was completed in the early morning hours of January 7. Pence declared President-elect Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris victors, and affirmed that they would assume office on January 20. Pressured by his administration, the threat of removal, and numerous resignations, Trump later committed to an orderly transition of power in a televised statement.” – ‘Wikipedia,’ March 8, 2021; edited, documented by 549 footnotes

THE ROLLING STONE ACCOUNT. “The January 6th Save America March, where then-President Donald Trump incited a crowd to attack the U.S. Capitol, opened with a prayer. Trump’s longtime spiritual adviser and White House adviser, the Florida televangelist PAULA WHITE, called on God to ‘give us a holy boldness in this hour.’ Standing at the s’me podium where, an hour later, Trump would exhort the crowd to ‘fight like hell,” White called the election results into question, asking God to let the people ‘have the assurance of a fair and a just election.’ Flanked by a row of American flags, White implored God to ‘let every adversary against democracy, against freedom, against life, against liberty, against justice, against peace, against righteousness be overturned right now in the name of Jesus.’

Within hours, insurrectionists had surrounded the Capitol, beaten police, battered down barricades and doors, smashed windows and rampaged through the halls of the Capitol, breaching the Senate chamber. In video captured by The New Yorker, men ransacked the room, rifling through senators’ binders and papers, searching for evidence of what they claimed was treason. Then, standing on the rostrum where the president of the Senate presides, the group paused to pray ‘IN CHRIST’S HOLY NAME.’ Men raised their arms in the air as millions of Evangelical and Charismatic parishioners do every Sunday and thanked God for allowing them ‘to send a message to all the tyrants, the communists and the globalists, that this is our nation, not theirs.’ They thanked God ‘for allowing the United States of America to be reborn.’” – SARAH POSNER, “How the Christian Right Helped Foment Insurrection,” January 31, 2021; edited, emphasis my own

WHAT GOD THINKS. The Prophet speaks to such vile, seditious BLASPHEMY in no uncertain terms. To all who are still Complicit, or remain Silent, most especially.

“WOE to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and prudent and shrewd in their own sight!” – ISAIAH 5:20-21, AMPC

And still, and still, and still, the Church remains overwhelmingly Silent about or Supportive of a Second Trump Presidency. Selah. Selah.

THE PULPIT COMMENTARY. “‘Woe unto them that call evil good.’ This is ‘The Fourth Woe.’ There are persons who gloss over evil deeds and evil habits by fair-sounding names, who call cowardice caution, and rashness courage, stubbornness thrift, and wasteful profusion generosity. The same men are apt also to call good evil; they brand prudence with the name of cunning, call meekness want of proper spirit, sincerity rudeness, and firmness obstinacy. This deadness to moral distinctions is the sign of deep moral corruption, and fully deserves to have a special “woe” pronounced against it.” – JOSEPH S EXELL & HENRY DONAL MAURICE SPENCE-JONES, EDS., 1913; edited

Let’s never forget the nearly inarguable Verbal Sanction of this Era of Deception by KELLYANNE CONWAY when responding to a challenge by broadcast journalist CHUCK TODD about the crowd sizes at the Trump Inauguration:

“‘Don’t be so overly dramatic about it, Chuck,’ Conway told NBC News’s Chuck Todd when he noted that the White House basically began the Trump presidency with these falsehoods. ‘You’re saying it’s a falsehood, and they’re giving — our press secretary, Sean Spicer, gave ALTERNATIVE FACTS to that.’” – AARON BLAKE, “Kellyanne Conway’s Legacy,” ‘Washington Post,’ August 24, 2020; edited, emphasis my own

Roger that, Kellyanne, Mr. Trump, Mr. Spicer. Republican Party, and Church: We got it.

THE TEACHING

You may think that this passage makes no sense in relation to our Topic for Today: “Where We Are Now.” Especially if as I continue to argue that it was and is the American Church that is overwhelmingly responsible for what took place on TWO HISTORIC DAYS:

The Election of Donald Trump as President on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2016.
The Storming of the Capitol on WEDNESDAY JANUARY 6, 2021.

Our Prospects. We have never been the same since, and as I continue to argue: Unless there is widespread Christian Repentance, we shall never return to what was considered ‘Normal’ again. Ever. Ever. Consider just one more representative Commentary about this Unprecedented Treachery issuing from God’s Church.

CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM. “The name of God was everywhere during Wednesday’s insurrection against the American government. The mob carried signs and flag declaring ‘jesus saves!’ and ‘god, guns & guts made america, let’s keep all three.’ Some were participants in the Jericho March, a GATHERING OF CHRISTIANS to ‘Pray, march, fast, and rally for election integrity.’ After calling on God to ‘Save the Republic!’ during rallies at State Capitols and in D.C. over the past two months, the marchers returned to Washington with flourish. On the National Mall, one man waved the flag of Israel above a sign – begging passersby to say ‘yes to jesus.’ ‘Shout if you love Jesus!’ someone yelled, and the crowd cheered. ‘Shout if you love Trump!’ The crowd cheered louder. The group’s name is drawn from the Biblical story of Jericho, ‘A city of false gods and corruption,’ the March’s website says. Just as God instructed Joshua to march around Jericho seven times with priests blowing trumpets, Christians gathered in D.C., blowing shofars, the ram’s horn typically used in Jewish worship, to banish the ‘Darkness of election fraud’ and ensure that ‘the walls of corruption crumble.’” – EMMA GREEN, “A Christian Insurrection,” ‘The Atlantic,’ January 8, 2021; edited

Except for hundreds of liberal and progressive Christian leaders, the so-called “Conservative” Church remains in ironclad, cowardly, reprehensible SUPPORT OR SILENCE. – JASON LEMON, ‘Newsweek,’ January 24, 2021; edited

THE CHURCH OF AMERICAN JINGOISM. “Jingoism is Nationalism in the form of aggressive and proactive foreign policy, such as a country’s advocacy for the use of threats or actual force, as opposed to peaceful relations, in efforts to safeguard what it perceives as its national interests. Colloquially, Jingoism is excessive bias in judging one’s own country as Superior to others – an Extreme type of Nationalism.” – EDITORS, ‘Wikipedia,’ February 19, 2021; edited

Thus does this Scripture to now apply to America’s overwhelmingly APOSTATE CHURCH in the following, severe manner.

THE FOOL. As the American Church continues their Sedition against the King, they have chosen to ‘Play the Fool,’ no longer protected by the Covenant. From the Hebrew, ‘Nabal’ [נָבָל]: “From a root word meaning ‘to fall away, fail or faint;’ also, to be foolishly wicked; to despise [the truth]; disgrace, dishonour, lightly esteem [the things of God]; to come to nought; surely make vile and wither; stupid, impious; (utterly) senseless; ignoble, disgraceful, acting immorally.” The synonym, “Deplorable,” works nicely here. DK: A “fool” by this account is never, ever a “faithful believer.” Thus, the prohibition of “Raca” does not apply. – cf. Matthew 5:22

NO GOD! The Presumption here is that they ACT is if God neither exists, or if He does, He either doesn’t care or cannot see their treachery. They effectively become, ‘Christian Atheists,” who reason like this, according to DR. JACK KERWICK: “If there is no God, then there is no Spirit. And if there is no Spirit, then all is Matter [“Naturalistic Atheism”]: Reason and human nature boil down to human biology, and biology, in turn, becomes nothing more or less than the latest product of a resolutely non-purposeful mechanical process billions of years in the happening. If there is no God, then anything is possible…Of Christianity, Friedrich Nietzsche said that he regarded it ‘as the most fatal and seductive lie that has ever yet existed — as the greatest and most impious lie.’ Yet Nietzsche viewed Christianity as the Ground Zero of the ‘Campaign against morality’ that he openly waged, the Prototype of just the notion of objective morality that he so despised. Thus, when Nietzsche declared ‘THE DEATH OF GOD’ [‘The Gay Science,’ 1882], it was the Death of Moral Objectivity, of Moral Absolutes, that he celebrated. Human beings had nothing to go on but their own, ‘Will to Power.’ They alone are the Creators of Value.” – “If There Is No God, There Is No Morality,” ‘New American,’ December 20, 2012; edited

THEY ARE CORRUPT. By this Scriptural Calculus, they are in the Hebrew rendering, ‘Shachath’ [שָׁחַת]: “Those who go to ruin; become marred, spoiled or stained [by blood in the case of murder]; guilty of killing, wounding or devastating [an enemy]; to violate or injure; act perversely as with ‘the destroying angel;’ like a rogue lion on a rampage; accusative of [God’s] wisdom; to change from a sound to a putrid or putrescent state; to separate the component parts of a body, as by a natural process, which accompanied by a fetid smell; debased; rendered impure; changed to a worse state; not genuine; infected with errors or mistakes.”

DO ABOMINABLE WORKS. Still worse, and descriptive of what took place in Washington on January 6, and later at the CPAC Conference (much more on this in Part III of this Essay), these ‘Christian Atheists’ become ‘Abominations’ to God. Selah. Defined by the Hebrew, ‘Taab’ [תַּעָב]: “To abhor or be abhorrent; as with a vulture or scavenger bird; diseased; become detestable, loathsome, or ‘deplorable’ in every way; morally abominable; to be refused (or rejected) by God; i.e., to become what Scripture calls, ‘a prostitute’ or harlot to the Lord’s Covenant,” thereby forfeiting all rights and privileges associated with belonging to the Lord; that is, fully Apostate: “One who has forsaken the Church, sect or profession to which he before adhered.”

COMMENTARY. “A description of the Depravity of Human Nature, and the ‘Deplorable Corruption’ of a great part of Mankind. – ‘The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.’ The sinner here described is an ATHEIST [professed or de facto], one that saith there is No Judge or Governor of the world, No Providence ruling over the affairs of men. He says this in his heart. He cannot satisfy himself that there is none, but ‘wishes’ there were none, and pleases himself that it is possible there may be none; he is willing to think there is none. This Sinner is a Fool; he is simple and unwise, and this is evidence of it: He is wicked and profane, and this is the cause. The Word of God is a discerner of these thoughts. No man will say, ‘There is no God,’ till he is so hardened in sin, that it is become his interest that there should be none to call him to an account.” – MATTHEW HENRY, ‘Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited

Now to a Severity of painful Example that may shock, but hopefully into a Moral Sanity currently, grotesquely absent from almost all God’s Houses in America.

LAST THOUGHTS

THE DIALOGUE. I had planned a different conclusion than the one that follows, and here’s why. As I was putting a wrap on this last section, a well dressed and mannered couple was sitting at the table next to mine, and I needed their help in unplugging my power cord.

And you can probably guess the rest. They turned out to be Christian believers, going to a politically conversant Megachurch here in The Springs. To save time, I will refer to the nattily dressed, 86-year-old man as “M,” and his somewhat younger wife as “W.”

W: “Oh, I see you are working on something, what do you do?”

DK: “I’m a writer, a semi-retired college professor.”

W: “And what do you write about?”

DK: “Um, well, I blog and vlog on the Theology of American Culture and Politics.”

M: “Really. Well, what do you think is the most serious problem facing the country today?”

DK: “For me, it is clearly the Collapse of the American Pulpit into timid avoidance of preaching the hard truths.”

[Affirming head nods from both].

M: “We go to a church that does bring that forth, the Church for All Nations. We used to go to New Life Church, but they weren’t willing to do that. The lead pastor there is afraid.”

[At this point I am getting excited that I may have found some spiritual comrades].

DK: “Well that’s great, because it’s getting pretty rough out there, and truth has become a big deal as never before. That’s why I carry “Fred” everywhere I go [the 9 mm Glock on my hip]. Had 70+ death threats so far.”

M: “Really. Hmm.”

DK: “You might be surprised who they all came from.”

W: “Who? Who?”

DK: “Followers of Trump, every single one.”

[They both become church mouse quiet about now, faces angle downward].

M: “So, we can’t survive this Biden presidency you know.”

DK: “I’m not convinced we were going to survive another Trump term.”

M: “Well, not so sure I can agree with you there.”

DK: “I understand, you’ll likely have another chance if he runs in 2024.”

M: “Yes, I expect he will. And we cannot let Biden stay in there.”

Selah. Selah.

SAME OLD, SAME OLD. We talked about Covid-19 as we all got ready to leave, and the Wife mentioned that they [Divinely] avoided it. “We’re healed!” Baptists going to a Spirit-filled Church, you see.

To This Point: With a non-scientific sample size of just two, I confirm research on Donald Trump being the clear FAVORITE OF 80 PERCENT of all those who call themselves “Christian.” Or more. I tell you from what I discern and read and hear and sense – or more.

The American Church has not budged from Trumpism, not by one inch.

CODA. So, this is “WHERE WE ARE NOW,” beloved. In the final installment, we will look at where these Strong Trends are likely to take us in the Near Future – even by the End of 2021.

And WALK AWAY from all the rest.
