SPECIAL PRÉCIS ON THE ZEAL OF THE LORD VS. THE ANGER OF MAN: HONORING THE KING VS. TAKING REVENGE (WITH VIDEO)

  1. THEOLOGY

SCRIPTURE. “He made a whip of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; His disciples remembered that it is written [in the Scriptures], ‘ZEAL (love, concern) FOR YOUR HOUSE [and its honor] will consume Me!’ …

[But] understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving]; for the [resentful, deep-seated] ANGER OF MAN does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].” – JOHN 2:16-17; JAMES 1:19-20, AMP

KEY TERMS:

  • “ZEAL” (FOR GOD’S HOUSE).” ‘Zelos’ [ζλος]: “Based on a primary word for ‘heat,’ meaning: ‘Ardor, fervency, jealousy; excitement of the mind; diligence, forwardness [i.e., Boldness].’” NOTE: “Zlos (an omamopoeic term that mimics the sound of water bubbling over from heat and perhaps derived from 2204 /zéō, ‘To boil’) – Properly, ‘burning emotion’ (inner feeling boiling over, ‘boiling from heat’…(figuratively) something very fervent’ (‘red-hot’) as with ‘Spirit-fueled zeal to serve the Lord.’ This root (zē-) is used both negatively (‘jealousy’) and positively (‘zeal’) depending on The Context.’ [The root (zē-, ‘zeal’) literally means ‘Hot enough to boil.’ It is metaphorically used of ‘Burning Anger, Love, Zeal (for God and Truth).”
  • “ANGER” (OF MAN). Orgé’ [ργ]: “[Unbridled] wrathful desire; rage, indignation.’ ‘Violent passion or abhorrence; punishment or vengeful wrath; an impulse or impetus toward coveting after something.’” NOTE: The term ργή occurs thirty-six times in the Greek New Testament and gathers into TWO BROAD SPHERES: (1) The settled, righteous opposition of God to sin, and (2) The moral emotion of anger in people, which Scripture repeatedly warns must be restrained. In every setting, ργή reveals the Character of a Holy God and calls His people to live in light of both His Justice and His Mercy.” DK: Thus, there is theological OVERLAP between the Anger of God and the Anger of Man. When injury to God is the case, the Righteous Anger of Christ is likely; when it is over an Injury to Self, it is likely the Unrighteous Anger of Man.

QUOTATION. “While Adulation has its moments and can be like a bath in warm water after coming in from a snowstorm, the psychic high from ‘Standing Up for what you believe in’ and being attacked for it far surpassed the comfort to be derived from that bath of praise.’” ― ANDREW BREITBART, Righteous Indignation: Excuse Me While I Save the World!, 2011; edited

COMMENTARY. “‘The FIRST public work in which we find Christ engaged, was driving from the Temple the traders whom the covetous priests and rulers encouraged to make a market-place of its courts.’ Those now make God’s House a house of merchandise, whose minds are filled with cares about worldly business when attending religious exercises, or who perform Divine offices for love of gain. Christ, having thus cleansed the Temple, gave a Sign to those who demanded it, to prove His Authority for so doing. He foretells His Death by the Jews’ malice, ‘Destroy ye this temple; I will permit you to destroy it.’ He foretells His Resurrection by His own power: In three days I will raise it up. Christ took again His own life. Men mistake by understanding that according to the letter, which the Scripture speaks by way of figure. When Jesus was Risen from the Dead, His disciples remembered he has said this. It helps much in understanding the Divine Word, to observe the fulfilling of the Scriptures …

‘Instead of blaming God under our trials, let us open our ears and hearts to learn what He teaches by them.’ And if men would govern their tongues, they must govern their passions. The worst thing we can bring to any dispute, is anger. Here is an exhortation to lay apart, and to cast off as a filthy garment, all sinful practices. This must reach to sins of thought and affection, as well as of speech and practice; to every thing corrupt and sinful. We must yield ourselves to the Word of God, with humble and teachable minds. Being willing to hear of our faults, taking it not only patiently, but thankfully. It is the Design of the Word of God to make us wise to Salvation; and those who propose any mean or low ends in attending upon it, dishonour the Gospel, and disappoint their own souls.” – MATTHEW HENRY, Exposition of the Old and New Testaments, 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited

II. TEACHING

“To everything there is a SEASON [‘a Divinely appointed occasion’], and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to get and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away; a time to rend and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak; a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace … He has made everything beautiful in its time.” ECCLESIASTES 3:1-8, 11, AMPC

PAUL’S MAXIM. The Beginnning of distinguishing what sort of Anger God permits us to express is found in the Great Apostle’s clear instruction in the following passage. This Principle can be summed up in the often pejorative phrase:

 “It depends.”

That is precisely what King Solomon meant in the foregoing passage about “Seasons.” Here is what Paul wrote to us all for such times as these.

“For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a SERVANT TO ALL, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law;to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.” – 1 CORINTHIAN 9:19-23, AMPC

Taking into account both the Passage from Solomon and the Teachings of Paul, we derive the following COROLLARIES.

  • THE SEASON. As with the wise Sons of Issachar, we are instructed to always pay attention to ‘Understanding the Times, so that we will know what America ought to do’ (1 Chronicles 12:32). This requires us all, but especially our PASTOR AND TEACHERS AND ELDERS, to be acutely attentive to what is taking place in the culture, filter it through the Grid of Scripture, and offer prudent counsel as to how to best engage The Times.
  • THE UNSAVED. Several important protocols are noted by Ronald Beers, General Editor of the Life Application Study Bible (2022, p. 2614). (1) Find common ground with your companion as a means of caring about how to make the conversation successful. (2) Avoid a know-it-all attitude, preferring a healthy mixture of confidence and humility. (3) Make the other feel accepted, valued and respected, no matter their present situation or station in life. (4) Be sensitive to their needs and concerns, discerning the spirit of the individual. (5) Look for opportunities to share about Christ, often times by using part of your testimony to do so.
  • THE REBELLIOUS. Here we turn to the indelible EXAMPLE OF CHRIST in dealing with Church leaders who are either too timid, too arrogant, or too avaricious to tell their congregations the truth. An AI Overview (ret. Dec. 1, 2025) was superior to all others I reviewed from well-known Bible scholars. This in and of itself a sad commentary on the present reluctance or patent absence of the Church’s Duty to confront Falsehood in Gods own House. I deal at length with this crucial Third Category of Speaking God’s Truth to Religious Power – a Responsibility that the American White Church has virtually abandoned wholesale. With the devastating Consequences we see all around us today.

III. TWO VIEWS OF MATTHEW 23

Of all of the Lord’s Remonstrances – including His taking a whip to the hated Moneylenders of (John 2:13-17), is His nearly UNBRIDLED RAGE at the Religious Leaders of His day. Here is the Text in its entirely, for accurate details from which we must all learn – and especially our own Christian Pastors and Teachers of today.

“Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do to be seen by men.

They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, “Rabbi, Rabbi.” But you, do not be called “Rabbi’;” for ONE is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for ONE is your Teacher, the Christ. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

But WOE [‘Ouai!; a severe exclamation of grief or dread or runuciation’]to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

WOE to you, blind guides, who say, “Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.”Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? And, “Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.” Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift. Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.

WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence.Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.

WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, “If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.”

Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers’ guilt.Serpents, broodof vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell? Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation” (VV. 1-36, NKJV).

This, Jesus Christ’s fiery, public and properly DEFAMING REMONSTRANCE against the Religious Hypocrites is, if presented at all from our Pulpits, normally watered down to what I shall refer to as ‘Digestible American Dilution.’

That is: ‘Jesus wasn’t really angry. Upset a little maybe, disappointed in these men, but oh no.”Our Jesus” would never act like this!’ Or this:Must be a translation issue,’ likely whispered to wives and coworkers in private conversation over coffee.

Once again therefore, since I could not find a single Teacher of Scholar to make this point for us, I defaulted toward TWO AI OVERVIEWS that did yeoman’s work to drive this idea home (ret. Dec. 2, 2025; edited).

ONE: THE AMERICAN VIEW. Here is what I most often hear from our Pastors who labor furiously to keep the congregation engaged (entertained) and attending ever Sunday. And of course, to keep those gifts and offerings rolling in, don’t you know.

This approach reminds me of a book chapter (in which I also published a chapter) by DR. ROBERT NORTON in his insightful essay on “Soft Magic” (Dr. Carol Wilder-Mott, Rigor & Imagination: Essays from the Legacy of Gregory Bateson, 1981). Another writer would define that concept as: “Stuff that’s Abstract, like miracles or wishes maybe based on Religion or Philosophy- based on something Unquantifiable, like Emotion, Faith, Value, and Desire” (Radiant Oberon, Reddit, 2023; edited).

This is in the Church, the very New Age-like stuff of Mystery, Spirit, Experience, Emotion, and what George Orwell once called, “The feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, 1949).

We may well call this form of Spiritual Nonsense, “Passive-Aggressive Anger.”

OPEN. “‘A Timid American Gospel View of Matthew 23 is likely a Soft interpretation.’ downplays Jesus’s Harsh Condemnation of the Scribes and Pharisees, ignoring the Severity of the passage.

  • DOWNPLAYING JUDGMENT. “A Timid View might treat ‘Jesus’ Woes’ as less severe, failing to acknowledge the serious Condemnation they represent. The strong language like ‘Hypocrites!’ ‘Blind Guides!’ and ‘Brood of Vipers!’ would be softened or recontextualized away from the Judgment it is meant to convey.”
  • POSITIVITY. “It would emphasize the ‘Positive Commands’ for servant leadership and humility (Matthew 23:8-12) but ignore the preceding and following ‘Woes’ that demonstrate the dire Consequences of failing to live by those Principles.”
  • IGNORING HYPOCRISY. “It might overlook the ‘Core Theme of Hypocrisy,’ which is Central to Jesus’ Critique of the Scribes and Pharisees. Instead, it would likely present the passage as ‘a Gentle Lesson’ on the importance of being a Good Role Model, rather than a fierce Denunciation of a System that was leading people astray.”
  • AVOIDING CONFRONTATION. “‘This approach would avoid Confronting the Idea of Spiritual Deception or the Danger of sincerely believing one is doing God’s work while actually being deceived.’ It would ignore the Warnings that it is possible to be genuinely devoted but wrong– ‘Leading to DAMNATION!’”

TWO: THE ORTHODOX VIEW. The Editors of Got Questions (Ret. Dec. 2, 2025; edited) offer an accurate, drastically Contrasting View of the Christian Faith: “In the context of Christianity, Orthodoxy’ refers to the Core Beliefs that define the Christian Faith. The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church defines Orthodoxy as ‘Right Belief, as contrasted with Heresy(2005, p. 1,206). Orthodox Beliefs are established, Biblical Beliefs that all Christians should agree on. While there is a wide range of legitimate views on many topics: ‘Rejection of Orthodox Beliefs places someone “OUTSIDE” the Bounds of Christianity.’”

  • OPEN. “In Matthew 23, Jesus’ Anger is directed at the Hypocrisy of the Scribes and Pharisees, [Religious Hypocrites] who focused on external rituals while neglecting the ‘Weightier matters of the Law,’ such as Justice, Mercy, and Faithfulness. He condemns their ‘Superficial Righteousness,’ using harsh language to criticize them for oppressing the poor, misleading people, and shutting the Kingdom of Heaven from them. Jesus’ Anger is portrayed as a ‘Righteous, Prophetic Denunciation of Corruption,’ not a personal outburst, and is intended as a Divine Warning!” DK: And it is LOUD!
  • HYPOCRITES! [ποκριταί, ‘Dissemblers, Pretenders, Play Actors’] “Jesus condemned the Scribes and Pharisees for their Hypocrisy, specifically for meticulously observing minor rules (like tithing spices) while neglecting the more important aspects of the Law—Justice, Mercy, and Faithfulness.” DK: That is, The DOCTRINES!’
  • SUPERFICIAL RIGHTEOUSNESS. “He criticized their outward appearance of Piety, likening them to ‘Whitewashed Tombs’ that are beautiful on the outside but full of dead bones and uncleanness within.”
  • MISLEADING OTHERS. “He accused them of straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel, meaning they focused on small details but ignored the larger, more important matters of the Law [‘The TRUTH!’]. He also warned that they made converts ‘twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.’” DK: The horrific Discipleship Protocols of churches making youth ‘Like Themselves rather than Christlike messengers.’
  • OPPRESSING THE POOR. “The Scribes and Pharisees are also condemned for devouring widows’ houses for appearance’s sake.” DK: Make that read: ‘Brutalizing the least among us!’ Selah.
  • RIGHTEOUS ANGER. “This anger is described as a ‘Righteous, Prophetic Denunciation of Corruption’ and a DIVINE WARNING rather than a personal emotional outburst.”
  • OVERVIEW. “Jesus highlights THE HYPOCRISY OF LEADERS who emphasize ‘Outward Appearance’ and harsh adherence to [their reading of] The Law’s small details while lacking ‘Inner Righteousness and Compassion.’ He stresses that True Righteousness comes from inner purity, not just outward performance, and that one must ‘Clean the inside’ of a person first. ‘His Critique shows his Hatred for Religious Hypocrisy and His Desire for Genuine Faith, which includes Mercy and Justice, not just rules.’” DK: Now think ICE KIDNAPPINGS of the poorest of the poor – with NOT a single whisper from our Pastors, beloved.
    IV. LAST THOUGHTS

So let’s wrap this up with a simple SUMMARY of the Clear Differences between Divine Wrath and Human Anger. Because, beloved. those Differences are stark and dramatic! IF we don’t understand those Contrasts, we run the risk of Destroying Life’ or, more happily, ‘Bringing Life.’

For this Conclusion, we turn to DR. ERIC GEIGER, pastor, mission specialist with a doctorate in leadership from Southern Seminary. His piece is titled, “God’s Righteous Anger vs. Man’s Unrighteous Anger,” published in his Blog on October 17, 2023 (edited).

  • OPEN. The Apostle James wrote that ‘Human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness’ (James 1:20). There is a Difference between God’s Anger and Human Anger, Righteous and Unrighteous Anger. Not all anger is bad. God is holy and loving and His Anger is holy and loving and always good. ‘So, there is a Good Anger. It is Human Anger that ruins us.’”
  • DISTINCTIONS.  “Renowned Christian counselor David Powlison wrote: ‘Your anger is both brilliant and appalling.’ The shifting line between Good and Evil plays out when it comes to your anger. ‘Your anger is GODLIKE to the degree you treasure Justice and are alert to Falsehood. Your anger is DEVIL-LIKE to the degree you play God and are petty, merciless, whiny, argumentative, willful, and unfair.’”
  • CAUSE. “Augustine wrote: ‘In our ethics, we do not so much inquire whether a holy soul is angry, as WHY he is angry.’ The Why’ we get angry is the first step in identifying if it is Holy or Unholy. John 11 records Jesus at the graveside of His friend, Lazarus. Three times in the passage, Jesus is described as being ‘deeply moved.’ It is the same Word used for ‘Anger’ in other places in the Scripture. Jesus was angered at the death, angered that people He loved were facing the cruelty of this world, and angered about the impact of sin in our world. ‘This was a Holy Anger.’ We are right to be angered at sin and the impacts of sin. We should hold a Holy Displeasure about God’s Name being defamed, about people created in His image being abused or oppressed, and about our own sinfulness.”
  • SPEED. “‘Righteous Anger is Slooooow, and Unrighteous Anger is Quick.’ We often say, ‘He has a short fuse,’ or ‘She has a quick temper.’ The phrase gives the picture that the person is going to blow up because the fuse is short, and that the moment from when the person has been lit to the explosion is really quick. The Scripture uses the opposite language to describe PATIENCE: ‘Long-tempered. Long-fused. Thankfully “God is Patient and slow to anger” with us.’”
  • OBJECTIVE. “‘The Goal of Righteous Anger is to RESTORE to God’s Design and Intention.’ When Jesus was angered in the Temple and overturned tables, He was filled with Holy Displeasure … ‘The Goal of Human Anger is to DESTROY someone or something with the hope that someone will suffer or be humiliated.’”
  • EXPRESSION. “In his book, Good and Angry [2016], David Powlison pointed out the different expressions between Righteous and Unrighteous Anger. ‘Godly Anger Confronts someone. Human Anger Condemns. Righteous Anger Admonishes, while Unrighteous Anger Accuses. Righteous Anger Warns, and Unrighteous Anger Threatens.’”
  • TELOS. “The End of God’s Anger is satisfied in Jesus or by Jesus. ‘For those of us who believe in Jesus [and REMAIN in Jesus through Obedience], there is no Anger from God left for us because it was all poured out on Jesus. For those who do not, Jesus will pour out WRATH at the End of Times.’ If we do not trust God with Holy Vengeance, we will be consumed with our own desire for others to pay and we will be ruined.”

FINAL SATISFACTION. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave the way open for GOD’S WRATH [and His judicial righteousness]; for it is written [in Scripture], ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord.” – ROMANS 12:19, AMP

In Sum: Only through a RADICAL FELLOWSHIP with The Christ will you be able hear Him clearly to Confront Evil among Those Inside,” and share His Light with ‘The Outsiders’ (1 Cor. 5:12). Only by this deeply rooted Faith and Walk with THE LION OF JUDAH can we absolutely ‘TRUST HIM for the Outcomes.’

Enough to accept whatever HE desires, whether unto Life or unto Death. This, and nothing less!
