THE BATTLE IS GETTING REAL: NOTES ON THE BURGEONING AMERICAN CULTURE WAR OF 2022 – PART III: THE COMMAND

PART I: The Commission – Ephesians 5:1-2

PART II: The Warning – Ephesians 5: 5-7

PART III: THE COMMAND – EPHESIANS 5:11-14

PART IV: The War – Ephesians 6:10-18

PART V: The Mystery – Ephesians 6:19-20

SCRIPTURE. “Take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness, but instead [let your lives be so in contrast as to] expose and reprove and convict them. For it is a shame even to speak of or mention the things that [such people] practice in secret. But when anything is exposed and reproved by the light, it is made visible and clear; and where everything is visible and clear there is light. Therefore He says, ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.’” – EPHESIANS 5:11-14, AMPC

QUOTATIONS

SMITH. “Anger is what makes our struggle visible, and our struggle is what exposes the hypocrisy of a Nation that fashions itself a moral leader. To rise against the narrative and ‘expose the Lie’ gives opportunity to those whose identity depends on the Lie to question and, hopefully, change.” ― Mychal Denzel Smith, ‘Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man’s Education,’ June 2016; edited

KASSEM. “We awaken by asking the right questions. We awaken when we see knowledge being spread that goes against our own personal experiences. We awaken when we see popular opinion being wrong but accepted as being right, and what is right being pushed as being wrong. We awaken by seeking answers in corners that are not popular. And we awaken by ‘turning on the Light inside’ when everything outside feels Dark.” ― Suzy Kassem, ‘Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem,’ May 2011; edited

  1. FIRST THOUGHTS

If ever there were a single, driving purpose for Jesus Christ to have become Incarnate in order to so intimately visit our tortured planet, it is, in His own scintillating Words, this. Spoken right after He rescued the woman caught in adultery from being stoned to death.

“Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.’” – JOHN 8:12, AMP

I love this brilliant response offered by MATTHEW HENRY.

“Christ is the Light of the world. God is Light, and Christ is the Image of the invisible God. One sun enlightens the whole world; so does One Christ, and there needs no more. What a dark dungeon would the world be without the sun! So would it be without Jesus, by whom Light came into the world. Those who follow Christ shall not walk in Darkness. They shall not be left without the Truths which are necessary to keep them from destroying error, and the directions in the way of Duty, necessary to keep them from condemning sin.” – ‘Exposition of the Old and New Testaments,’ 6 vols., 1708-1710; edited

MY STORY. Though I will not make this Lesson about me, I do think it may again help to illustrate the unbridled, loving power of God’s Light when it is invited into a half-life suffocating and suffused in nearly absolute Darkness.

It was October 29, 1979, as I lay in my bed early in the evening, so completely immobilized by a suicidal depression that I had been there for days on end. Not eating. Hadn’t slept in three days straight. Not even drinking the alcohol I had used to treat the soul-pain in me for many years. And, significantly, not reporting to work without telling my employers at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California what was wrong with me.

Because I didn’t know what was wrong with me.

I thought it strange back then that my mom had been sending me religious literature in the mail for weeks, stuff that I normally tossed into the trash. But that evening, I was prodded by some unknown Presence to grab a book off my shelf to read in the attempt to get some sleep after those three completely sleepless nights, before I was to take my own life on Halloween Night in just a couple of days.

The Book was, ‘Man in Black,’ by Johnny Cash, published a few years before in 1975.

Here is one review of its contents by DAVID CANTWELL writing for the Miami Herald on August 12, 2016, that reached into my blackened, nearly dead heart that night as I read it cover to cover before dawn broke. Its Message pierced my shriveled soul with a small but piercing Shaft of Light, prompting me to hear God’s Voice for the very first time:

          “Call a pastor!”

Startled at this strange Voice around 4 am, I desperately fumbled through several calls and found the number of “a pastor” from my born again, younger sister, Darisa Jasperson.

And the rest, as they like to say, is history. My history, now barely starting to belong to Yehoshua ben David, as I climbed out of a cold, rat infested, Dungeon of a near death to a brand new Lease on Real Life in just about 90 days, as I best recall.

THE POINT. As it is true that the God of the Universe can rescue a single soul from a crushing Darkness from all its entrail of destruction and death, so can He raise a Nation – or a Church – to New Life. Yet these two institutions have for the last five years; and more, ‘Defied Him’ in virtually every possible way

So to our Lesson for Part III: ‘The Command.’

  1. WHEN GOD ROARS

In my many years of teaching and writing, I have never been a shouter. And now that I am more than occasionally given to it, I am still not comfortable with it, nor convinced for one minute that it’s always ‘Him.’ But there it is: My intensity and fury are unprecedented.

With that caveat plainly stated, I do wonder: Is God possibly shouting today, or more appropriately, ‘Roaring’?

GOD’S FIRST ROAR. After skittering around countless fluff pieces declaring the triumph of the Spirit-filled Church over all the secular enemies we have heard about since Day One of our Christian translation, I could find only One that properly focused on His First Target.

It we recently published by DR. CLAUDE MARIOTTINI, Professor of Old Testament at Northern Baptist Seminary. The title of his Blog: “A Lion Roars Against God,” published on March 8, 2021.

Here are his main points, so deeply appreciated by this writer for this moment in Church history.

  • THE ROAR OF AMOS. “And he said, ‘The Lord roars out of Zion and utters His voice from Jerusalem; then the pastures of the shepherds mourn and the top of [Mount] Carmel dries up … The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?’” – AMOS 1:2;3:8, AMPC
  • AUTHOR INTERPRETATION. “In Amos 1:2 and 3:8 God speaks with the Roar of a Lion in order to warn Israel of the impending Judgment that was coming upon the nation. The Roar of the Lion is the angry message that the Prophet proclaims to Israel. Amos was saying that the words he heard were like the roar of a lion. The Lion’s Roar was the voice of an angry God who was hurt because of the Apostasy of Israel.”
  • THE SIN OF GOD’S HOUSE. “Israel acts like a lion threatening God. ‘Israel is the lion, in short, the animalistic aggressor that has acted against God.’ Israel has acted as a lion in the forest, roaring against Yahweh. This roaring lion is ready to attack. Because of the aggressive attitude of Israel, Yahweh hates what they have done: Israel has defiantly raised its voice against Yahweh. By roaring against God, Israel is telling God it does not love Him even though God has remained faithful to the relationship He established with Israel on Mount Sinai.”
  • THE PAIN OF YAHWEH. “Yahweh will punish the people, because they have become ‘like a lion in the forest’ roaring against him. Yahweh will bring judgment upon the people of Judah but not without a cost; Yahweh Himself will suffer in punishing the people. Yahweh shows His pain: ‘I have forsaken My house, I have abandoned My heritage; I have given the beloved of My heart into the hands of her enemies’ (Jeremiah 12:7). The pain that Yahweh will incur as He delivers over His beloved people to their enemies is strongly expressed here.”
  • GOD’S LOVE IN ANGER. “For Yahweh to treat Israel as an enemy does not mean that Yahweh stops loving Israel. Yahweh is the spurned Lover who endures all the pain, the anger, and the anguish of Israel’s betrayal and rejection. Yahweh has forsaken Israel because Israel has forsaken Yahweh. Yahweh has abandoned Israel because Israel has abandoned Yahweh. Yahweh has given Israel over to their enemies because of their Rebellion and Apostasy.”

DK’S TAKE. I love this analysis because it reveals something to me I have never before realized, though it was right in front of me: God’s ‘reluctance’ to punish, but by His holiness, His ‘necessity’ of doing so. Yet it breaks His heart to have to move against His own, because they have dared to move against Him.

Recall the Messiah’s Great Lament: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother fowl gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!” – MATTHEW 23:37, AMPC

GOD ROARS AS GOD WEEPS. This is the more complete Picture of Jesus Christ and the Father that I had not gleaned – until reading Dr. Mariotinni’s superb Commentary. Let us remember that we drive our King to such passion because of our heart-rending, law-crushing and covenant shattering Rebellion. And it tears the heart of our Sovereign literally in two.

Selah. Selah.

  1. ROOTS OF THE CHRISTIAN REBELLION

The Question of the hour for many Christians today, though tragically from only a minority of us: ‘What has happened to God’s Church?

EARLY RED FLAGS. To address this Central Question that storms against the doors of our understanding more loudly each day – at least for those who are listening – I turn to an insightful analysis by Bible scholar, pastor and missionary to Israel, JIM GARRISH.

He effectively tackles our anguish in his article, “Whatever Happened to the Christian Church?” first published in 2005 – ten years before our Present Crisis was first ignited. Here are some Highlights from that thoughtful study.

  • THE SPARK. “In the MID-1960s, while serving as a young pastor in Denver, Colorado, I witnessed what I shall call a Spiritual Tsunami. This Tsunami must have been about a thousand feet (304 m) in height. It was like a dam that had long restrained evil broke, and a mighty ‘torrent of Lawlessness’ swept over the country and over the Church. Suddenly pastors were replaced as moral authorities in the community and new gurus began to arise everywhere in their stead.”
  • THE IMPACT. “We immediately began to pay a high price for this New Lawlessness. Soon, over forty million babies were destroyed in the evil tide of abortion.  In time, another forty million people were washed away in the flood tide of HIV and AIDS, mostly due to the New Morality and illicit sex.  Many Christian homes, parents and children were also severely damaged. Since that time, we have paid a very high price in areas almost too numerous to mention. For instance, the ancient Biblical Foundations of business morality were virtually wiped away and we began to enter into a new and frightening ‘Anything-Goes’ commercial world.”
  • ON SIN. “Because of the tidal wave of Lawlessness there began to be a New Attitude expressed toward sin.  In 1966, an Episcopal priest, JOSEPH FLETCHER, wrote an extremely popular book entitled ‘Situation Ethics.’  In the book, Fletcher assured us that we no longer needed to concern ourselves with laws to be obeyed. From now on the only law was the ‘Law of Love,’ and love justified both the means and the end. It is of note that Joseph Fletcher eventually became an atheist. In 1967, THOMAS HARRIS wrote his classic, ‘I’m OK – You’re OK.’ It was probably not so much the content of his pop psychology book, but the title itself that so appealed to an emerging Lawless Society.  Of course, with that line of thinking we could easily say Enron is OK, Hitler is OK, and maybe even Satan is OK.”
  • ON REPENTANCE. “So, we see that in our Society and even in the Church we have learned to coddle sin or else deny its existence. We deny a lot of other things too. If there is no sin, then what do we need with Repentance? It too has become a casualty of the Tsunami wave of Evil … ‘Repentance is a total change in one’s life.’  Perhaps Repentance is best pictured in the story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-24. This impetuous young man demanded his inheritance from his father and then promptly went to waste it in a foreign land. At last, when all was spent, he found himself feeding swine and even craving the husks that the swine were eating. As he came to his senses, he realized that his father’s servants were better off than he. At that point he made a decision to ‘return to his father and to confess his sins.’  He said: ‘I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men’ (Luke 15:18-19). That young lad reflected a true, Biblical Repentance.
  • ON CROSS & BLOOD. For much of its history, the religion of Judaism was a very bloody religion. Continual sacrifices were required at the Temple in Jerusalem and the blood constantly flowed down into the Kidron Valley. But in time Judaism became an altar-less, bloodless religion, as it is today. What is even more alarming is that we are coming closer and closer to an altar-less, Cross-less, and bloodless Christianity. A recent quote from a feminist theologian, DELORES WILLIAMS, illustrates this trend. She says: ‘I don’t think we need folks hanging on crosses and blood dripping and weird stuff.’ Today we seem to be ‘losing the Cross’ in the Christian life.  Jesus in Matthew 16:24-25 speaks about this Cross saying: ‘If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for My sake shall find it.’”
  • ON OTHER STUFF. “When we reflect a little, we can see that the Church is missing a lot of other things that used to belong to Christianity. Whatever happened to the preaching that this world is passing away (1 John 2:17)? Or, what happened to the preaching that the world and its sinners will be destroyed by fire? We read about this in 2 Peter 3:7: ‘The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.’ Whatever happened to the preaching that there is an eternal Hell?  In Matthew 10:28, Jesus says: ‘Be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.’  We might also ask, whatever happened to the preaching of a holy and sanctified life?  In 1 Peter 1:16 we read: “It is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

AMERICA’S PRECURSOR. “In the 1930s The Darkness closed in on Germany and much of Europe.  The Church was unprepared for this onslaught and many churches found themselves cooperating with Hitler and surrendering the Jews on their rolls.  But during this same time there was a small valiant Confessing Church that stood its ground. One of those brave pastors was DIETRICH BONHOEFFER. Bonhoeffer dared to help the Jews while standing against Hitler and his program. For doing so he was finally imprisoned at Buchenwald and in time was sentenced to death. Bonhoeffer was led to the gallows and gave his life as a Christian martyr just shortly before the war ended in 1945. He left us with these challenging words: ‘When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.’ Actually, if we have nothing worth dying for, we probably have nothing worth living for.”

It is significant to note that this good man’s focus was upon the Secular Left as our primary enemy back then. Yet he was sensitive enough to the Lord’s leading to conclude with this Echo from Hitler’s Germany. Clearly a Lesson today’s Church needs to heed, but by all accounts it is not.

  1. THE COMMAND

Now to the core of the Teaching: What does God ‘require’ of us toward obedience in this vital matter? As always, we go straight to the KEY TERMS in this passage to best appreciates its doctrinal building blocks.

REQUIRE. First however, so that we understand the terrible import of this Command, I choose this term carefully. From NOAH WEBSTER’S (1828) Dictionary again: “To demand; to ask, as of right and by authority. To claim; to render necessary; as a duty or anything indispensable; as, the Law of God requires strict obedience. To make necessary; to need; to demand. ‘The king’s business required haste.’ – 1 Samuel 21:8.”

  • NO FELLOWSHIP. The passage begins with the powerful idea of ‘Separation’ unto holiness. The Greek here is, ‘Sugkoinóneó’ [συγκοινωνέω], meaning: “To be a partaker with, have alliance and cooperation with as an accomplice in; to be in common cause with; properly, to deeply share with and be closely identified with someone; companionship; society; ‘consort’ [as an intimate companion]; mutual association of persons on equal and friendly terms; familiar intercourse; communion; intimate familiarity.”
  • FRUITLESS DEEDS. From the Greek term, ‘Akarpos’ [ἄκαρπος]: “Barren, profitless; refers to any thought (action) not originated and empowered by the Lord, i.e., not born of faith; By definitionall decisions that are not born ‘of faith are sin’ (Romans 14:23) – which automatically renders them eternally fruitless (‘a waste’). This is the case regardless of how impressive or acceptable they are in the eyes of the world; not  yielding what it ought to yield.”
  • OF DARKNESS. Here the word used is, ‘Skotos’ [ σκότος], or: “Either physical or moral darkness;  properly, darkness (obscurity); (figuratively) the principle of sin with its certain results; it has the power of rendering men bold to commit crimes in secret; persons in whom darkness becomes visible and holds sway; deeds done in darkness, ‘harmonizing’ with it; overcome by the night, becoming ignorant of error, thus committing its deeds; denotes the infernal spirits (or spirit of Antichrist) in hostile opposition to the Spirit of Christ; at war with God’s Light, resulting in eternal misery and damnation; implies a thick mist or fog.”
  • RATHER EXPOSE THEM! This Commandment is nearly universally ignored by today’s American Church. From the Greek word, ‘Elegchó’ [ἐλέγχω]: “To reprove with conviction or fervency; to rebuke; to discipline; to expose, show to be guilty; properly, to convince with solid, compelling evidence; to refute or confute; to bring to the light in order to expose; to find fault with, correct; to find fault with, correct; by word; to reprehend severely, chide, admonish; to lay open; ‘to set to public view’; to disclose; to uncover or draw from concealment.”
  • SHAMEFUL. Finally, to even speak (approvingly) of such matters is severely prohibited, defined by the Greek term, ‘Aischros’ [αἰσχρός]: “Base, disgraceful; improper, sordid; venal, filthy; dishonorable; in a manner to bring reproach; With indignity or indecency; in a manner that may cause disgrace; indecent, causing great offense; deserving of blame or castigation; humiliating or degrading; unethical, contemptible; opprobrious, degenerate; utterly despicable or abominable.”
  • AWAKE, O SLEEPER! Inarguably, the most important message God sends to His Church in this dark hour, taken from the Greek, ‘Egeiró’ [ἐγείρω], translated: “To arouse, cause to rise; literally, to wake up from the sleep of the dead; to recall the dead back to life; to cause to appear again [from an absence]; to incite, stir up against [indifference or rebellion]; cause to be reborn; to construct (or reconstruct); becoming attentive to one’s dangerous position in relation to the salvation of God; to rise again; to quit one’s previous position of defiance or slumber; implies a rescue from destruction.”

CHARLES ELLICOTT. “‘Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness.’—To ‘have no fellowship’ with such works is not to refuse to take part in them (for this surely might be taken for granted), but to keep no terms with them, to have no sympathy or indulgence or excuse for them. So the word is used, in Philippians 4:14, of ‘communicating with my affliction;’ and in Revelation 18:4, of ‘being partakers with the sins’ of Babylon. It is through such weak or cowardly indulgence, more than the actual love of evil, that sin is suffered to prevail. Hence St. Paul adds, ‘rather reprove them.’ Our Lord Himself has declared in all such cases, ‘He that is not with Me is against Me.’” – ‘An Old and New Testament Commentary for English Readers,’ 1878, 1897; edited

An important addition is supplied by ALBERT BARNES: “[This message] is addressed to the Church, calling on her to let her light shine; ‘this, to awake and arise from the dead,’ with the assurance that Christ would give them Light. The exhortation here is to Christians, to ‘avoid the vices of the pagan around them.’” – ‘Notes on the Old and New Testaments,’ 1884; edited

Now it doesn’t take a dual Ph.D. in theology and political science to make the direct application here to the vicious Trump Christian Nationalism that has so degraded the name “Christian,” that our witness has been nearly completely annihilated. So long, at least, as Christians ‘dare’ [challenge; provoke; defy] to associate the sacred name of Christ with the one who issues from the spirit of Antichrist.

FINAL BLASPHEMY. This comes terrifyingly near to what the Scriptures describe as ‘The Unforgiveable Sin.’ Listen ever so carefully and fearfully to its proper definition, as declared by Jesus Himself.

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy [every evil, abusive, injurious speaking, or indignity against sacred things] will be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the [Holy] Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit [by attributing the miracles done by Me to Satan] will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” – MATTHEW 12:31-32, AMP

Now very carefully indeed, consider what He said here in light of what follows.

‘Whoever shall speak a word attributing My miraculous work to Satan, it shall not be forgiven.’ Ever. DK: When Trump Christians loudly accuse those of us who refuse alliance with Trump or his wickedness, of ‘doing the Devil’s work’ – you finish the doctrinal equation, beloved.

With the greatest of fear and trembling in your very bones. I mean every word – and so does He, beloved. So does He.

ALBERT BARNES COMMENTS. “In this place, and in Mark 3:28-30, Jesus states the awful nature of the sin of which they had been guilty. That sin was ‘the sin against the Holy Spirit.’ It consisted in charging Him with being in league with the Devil, or accusing Him of working his miracles, not by the ‘Spirit’ or ‘power’ of God, but by the aid of the Prince of the Devils. It was therefore a direct insult, abuse, or evil speaking against the Holy Spirit – the Spirit by which Jesus worked His miracles.”

Notes on the Old and New Testament,’ 1884; edited

So do you who charge His true followers with ‘being in league with the Devil,’ run the gravest of risks in crafting yourselves to become Enemy to the living Christ. The consequences of which are total loss and total destruction.

Christian! Pastor! Teacher and Leader! Do you not see the very dark and strange fire with which you consort? I say it again in my mother’s tongue, for emphasis: ‘Les digo esto: ¡Están muy cerca de la perdición si continúan con esta traición!’

Look it up.

  • LAST THOUGHTS

To my great joy and distinct spiritual satisfaction as I close out our discussion, I discovered a Blogger who appears to be cut from our cloth, beloved. His name is FRITZ CHERY, an African American Bible teacher. His columns are laced with wit, wisdom and fire, thus I am delighted to feature him by addressing the title of his recent Commentary:

“Exposing Evil,” published on November 20, 2021; edited. Consider his open.

“It absolutely saddens and disgusts me by the amount of fake Christians in Christianity. Most people who call themselves Christians in America will be thrown into Hell. They’re rebellious towards the Word of God and when someone rebukes them, they say, ‘Thou shall not judge.’”

SO WHY WON’T PASTORS DO IT? Rather than mince around the tulips here, I am going to give you a shotgun blast of his from the hip, urgently needed Remonstrance against what I have come to somewhat derisively call, ‘The Establishment Church.

“First, that verse [about not judging] is talking about ‘hypocritical’ judging. Second, if you live a continuous, sinful lifestyle you’re not a true Christian because you’re supposed to be a new creation. I’ve even heard someone say, ‘I don’t care if she is a Satanist, I don’t judge anyone.’ I literally almost caught a heart attack …

You are to hate everything that God hates. Every Biblical leader stood up against evil and many even lost their lives for speaking against it. There is a reason Jesus says true believers will be hated and persecuted. If you desire to live a godly life you will be persecuted and there is no way around it.

That is why many believers stay quiet whenever they’re on the hot seat; they hush up in ‘fear of man.’ Jesus spoke up, Stephen spoke up, Paul spoke up, so why are we quiet? We must not be afraid to rebuke others. If someone is going astray from Christ, are you going to be silent, so they won’t hate you, or are you going to humbly and lovingly [or loudly], ‘say something’

The Holy Spirit will convict the world of its sins. If we stop defending Christianity, exposing evil, rebuking false teachers, and confronting believers, we will have more people lost and led astray. More people will believe false teachings. I mean, look how many people twist, ‘Thou shall not judge.’

When you remain quiet, then you start joining wickedness, [but] remember ‘God is not mocked.’ Stop being part of the world; ‘Expose it instead and save lives!’  The person who truly loves Christ is the one who’s going to ‘stand up for Christ’ no matter if they lose friends, family, or if the world hates us. The people who hate Christ are going to read this and say, ‘Stop judging.’”

CHERY’S CONCLUSIONS. So just about the time I am getting a little frustrated with this man’s need for some grammar remediation, he completes his Severe Rebuke with no fewer than 21 SCRIPTURES to support his argument.

I list only two here, from the New and Old Testaments, that do the job rather nicely.

  1. PSALM 94:16. “Who will rise up for me against the wicked? ‘Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity?’”
  • EPHESIANS 5:11-12. “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,’ but rather expose them.’ It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret.”

CODICIL. Oh, beloved of the Lord, give me no more than 100 Pastors like this courageous straight shooter, and I believe we could turn it all around in a single generation. You know why I said, “100”? Consider this report from ‘Encyclopedia Britannica’s’ review of the Circuit Riders who ignited the First Great Awakening.

“Each ‘Circuit of Congregations’—sometimes comprising as many as 25 or 30 meeting places—was under the supervision of a Methodist conference preacher who might have several lay assistants. Any young man who could preach and was willing to ride a horse for weeks over wild country might become an assistant and finally a Circuit Rider. Circuit Riders numbered about 100’by the end of the American Revolution. The salary was $64 a year until 1800, when it was raised to $100, with the horse furnished. There were few actual meetinghouses; church services usually were held in cabins, in barrooms, or outdoors.” – GLORIA LOTHA, Editor, updated November 18, 2011; edited

Just 100, Lord. No more, no fewer. Just 100. Or even 50, or perhaps just 20 or even 10, Lord. Give us those who would say, with the Prophet: “Here am I, Lord! Send me.” While there is still a little time left to us.

Ever your servant, DK
