PART I: “THE SEVEN REASONS”

FIRST THOUGHTS

I was reminded just this morning of an iconic opening scene from the 1953 film adaptation of H. G. Wells, ‘War of the Worlds’ (1898), his classic science fiction novel about an attack by Martians upon an unsuspecting Earth. Seems a man of God (wearing a clerical collar) approaches the war machine with his Bible held up high in his right hand, repeating the 23^rd Psalm (I think), while trying to – note this – ‘Make friends with a malevolent threat.’

He is among the first to get smoked.

THE POINT. We have all been rightly taught the longstanding Truth, “God is Love.” A number of Passages say it straight out, as in 1 John 4:8: “He who does not love has not become acquainted with God [does not and never did know Him], for God is love.”

And so He is, far beyond what mere mortals can fully comprehend as to the depth and breadth and height of God’s Enduring Affection for us. We are thus taught to love always, love everyone, every time, everywhere, no matter what, because, “God is Love.”

But there’s a Catch, a Doctrinal Codicil if you prefer, long forgotten it seems, to that Declaration: God’s Love is indeed Unconditional, but is also – wait for it – Conditional.

‘What? That’s not what they taught me in Sunday School or at Little House on the Prairie. What? What, you say?’ But yes, beloved, it is. It just is, and what follows details, theologically and historically, why this is The Real Truth of the Scriptures regarding the admittedly Limitless Love of the Almighty.

THE CONDITIONS

Best way I can introduce it is to quote an excellent Précis of it, by a recognized authority.

“God’s Love is Unconditional according to His grace and mercy, but also Conditional in His holiness and sovereignty. Unconditional Love involves total Acceptance, while Conditional Love involves Discipline.” – PHILIP WAJAYA, “is God’s Love Conditional or Unconditional?” ‘Christianity.com,’ January 29, 2020; edited

Now before getting down into the theological weeds on this, some everyday examples serve to make The Point both sharp and personal.

QUESTIONS. Consider the following illustrations of the Point I intend to make today.

Does God love the father who abuses and brutalizes his little children in the same way He loves a godly parent? No.

Does He love that individual who exploits the poor in order to attain to greater riches in the same way He loves the one who gives to the poor on a regular basis? Of course not.

More to today’s point, does God love the Dictator who lies and cheats and does great harm to and even murders his own citizens, in the same way He loves a benevolent, principled ruler? Never, not for a moment, and please don’t dare to argue otherwise.

Back to our well intentioned, but clearly Naïve Pastor: Did his attempt to ‘Make friends with Evil’ end well? And where did he get the idea that this is how a Christian Leader should behave? Are we indeed to ‘Love everyone equally at all times no matter the circumstances surrounding us, because ‘God is Love’?

For the beginning of The Answer, ask any Holocaust Survivor next time you get the chance. Or perhaps watch ‘Schindler’s List’ (1993) for some perspective.

FINE TUNING. Let’s ratchet down a few clicks on our Biblical Lens a bit, for the fuller grasp of The Answer.

“God’s Love is Unconditional, in a sense, that Love is His Nature (1 John 4:8, Deuteronomy 7:9) hence there is never a moment when God does not Love. Everything God does is [done] out of Love; even God’s Anger is a holy expression of His Love (Psalm 30:5, Micah 7:18). God is good and generous to everyone, regardless of their disposition toward Him (Matthew 5:45). The rejection and rebellion of humanity against God can never change the Truth that God is Love. In other words, God is always a God of Love despite our actions and attitudes toward Him. God’s Love, as described by Dr. John T. Yates, is ‘Unconditional and Unselfish Concern of God, in emotion, volition, and action, for man’s highest good.’” – WAJAYA, 2020

‘CONDITIONAL’ LOVE. The Indelible Point: God remains ‘Love,’ no matter the circumstances or sins that He must often address. It is, ‘Who He Is.’ However – and it’s a big, ‘However’ – the Text also says this.

JOHN 14:23. “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him.’”

JOHN 3:18. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

EXODUS 19:5. “Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine.”

DEUTERONOMY 11:26-28. “Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.”

PROVERBS 6:16-19. “The Lord hates these seven things: Eyes that show pride, tongues that tell lies, hands that kill innocent people, hearts that plan evil things to do, feet that run to do evil, witnesses in court who tell lies, and anyone who causes family members to fight.”

DERIVATIVE MAXIM. A Loving, Holy God also Hates sin! And for those who refuse to Repent, He hates what they do, and consequently severely Judges them. More severely still, the Leader. – cf. James 3:1

DIVINE ALGORITHIM

So just what is it that Mitigates between Man’s Sin and God’s Love? Well, in a single name – JESUS CHRIST. He ‘Stands between’ – the Gaping Abyss of our inability to completely stop sinning, even for a day, on the one hand – and God’s Mercy and Forgiveness and Grace on the other.

THE GOSPEL. That is precisely what He did at Golgotha – ‘Became sin’ for us. IF we will verbally and sincerely Accept that Sacrifice, and do our best, with His powerful help, to ‘Go and sin no more,” we are literally, ‘Good to go’ toward an incredible New Life in Christ. – cf. John 3:16, 8:11; Romans 10:9-10

Otherwise, if we Deny that Sacrifice, we stand Guilty before both God and man, and will be severely Judged.

Okay, check. But what about the man or woman who, subsequent to accepting Christ’s Sacrifice on the Cross, then decides to just go ahead and ‘Sin like Hell itself’ for most of the rest of their days? The doctrinal conundrum this introduces about being truly “Born Again” notwithstanding, there is only One Hope for such a foolish individual:

HUMILITY AND REPENTANCE. In point of fact, this IS ‘The Condition’ that mitigates between God considering us His enemy, or His beloved friend and servant. As I have written many times before, there is no sin that cannot be forgiven, so long as God sees a Humble Heart, and hears a sincere, Ready Confession.

It is the same for a Nation – or, for a Church.

“IF we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose].” – 1 JOHN 1:9, AMP; emphasis added

THE CONDITION REDUX. You get that “IF,” beloved? Most of the Church has dropped it from the Canonical Vocabulary, having decided to pretty much fly with: ‘God loves all us (believers and unbelievers alike) all the time regardless of our condition of heart and conduct,’ period.

Which is, for the record, Heresy, which leads to Death and Destruction. It is one thing to rightly claim, “God is Love,” but entirely another to say He loves everyone equally.

By that False Measure, He absolutely adored Adolf Hitler. To this Severe Warning:

“For [you seem readily to endure it] if a man comes and preaches another Jesus than the One we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the [Spirit] you [once] received or a different gospel from the one you [then] received and welcomed; you tolerate [all that] well enough!” – 2 CORINTHIANS 11:4, AMPC

THE DEATH OF ACCOUNTABLITY. In fact, in point of documentable fact, the vast majority of the ‘Feel Good Hyper-Grace’ Church in America today holds no one, absolutely no one, to God’s Account. Not themselves. Not their pastors nor their elders. Not their teachers. And most troubling of all:

Not even the President of the United States, who ‘claims’ to a man of Faith.

THE CONSEQUENCES

If ever there were one particular Sin that Jesus Christ considered “Venal” – i.e., “prostituted; being open to corrupt influence and especially bribery” – it is found in its most common manifestation:

HYPOCRISY. Taken from the Hebrew, ‘Chaneph’ [חָנֵף], which translates as: “Profane, irreligious, godless [though claiming to be the opposite]; impious, wicked; polluted, defiled, corrupt; the main idea is that of straying away from the right path, transgressing God’s Laws, breaking His Covenant; it is considered by God, ‘a murder,’ which does the same thing (Numbers 35:33), as with the evil actions of Religious Leaders who polluted the Temple in Jeremiah’s day (Jeremiah 23:11), and Antiochus Epiphanes’ actions (Daniel 11:32); the values of these godless are ‘completely twisted.’”

So do I take us to a most literal, visceral and hopefully visibly upsetting Divine Rebuke of the Religious Elites of His Day, as unmistakable Illustration of what God thinks about this heinous Sin of Betrayal and Deception.

CHRIST’S SEVEN WOES. Listen with hopefully New Ears, the Lord’s searing, public and unrelenting Renunciation of the Religious Hypocrites (Leaders and Teachers) of His Day.

I cite it in full, that it may impact all of us, in full – for ‘Such a Time’ as our own.

“Do not let yourselves be called leaders or teachers; for One is your Leader (Teacher), the Christ. But the greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor.

But WOE (judgment is coming) to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for you do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who are [in the process of] entering to do so.

WOE to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you swallow up widows’ houses, and to cover it up you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.]

WOE to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte (convert), and when he becomes a convert, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

WOE to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears [an oath] by the sanctuary of the temple, that is nothing (non-binding); but whoever swears [an oath] by the gold of the temple is obligated [as a debtor to fulfill his vow and keep his promise].’ You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the sanctuary of the temple that sanctified the gold? And [you scribes and Pharisees say], ‘Whoever swears [an oath] by the altar, that is nothing (non-binding), but whoever swears [an oath] by the offering on it, he is obligated [as a debtor to fulfill his vow and keep his promise].’ You [spiritually] blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? Therefore, whoever swears [an oath] by the altar, swears both by it and by everything [offered] on it. And whoever swears [an oath] by the sanctuary of the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells within it. And whoever swears [an oath] by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

WOE to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you give a tenth (tithe) of your mint and dill and cumin [focusing on minor matters], and have neglected the weightier [more important moral and spiritual] provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the [primary] things you ought to have done without neglecting the others. You [spiritually] blind guides, who strain out a gnat [consuming yourselves with miniscule matters] and swallow a camel [ignoring and violating God’s precepts]!

WOE to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and robbery and self-indulgence (unrestrained greed). You [spiritually] blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the plate [examine and change your inner self to conform to God’s precepts], so that the outside [your public life and deeds] may be clean also.

WOE to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which look beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. So you, also, outwardly seem to be just and upright to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build tombs for the prophets and decorate and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have joined them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

Fill up, then, the [allotted] measure of the guilt of your fathers’ sins. You serpents, you spawn of vipers, how can you escape the penalty of hell? Therefore, take notice, I am sending you prophets and wise men [interpreters, teachers] and scribes [men educated in the Mosaic Law and the writings of the prophets]; some of them you will kill and even crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues, and pursue and persecute from city to city, so that on you will come the guilt of all the blood of the righteous shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah [the priest], the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

I assure you and most solemnly say to you, [the judgment for] all these things [these vile and murderous deeds] will come on this generation.” – MATTHEW 23:10-36, AMP

Selah. Selah.

COMMENTARY. What this boils down to, in all its Scathing, Angry Rebuke of the Teachers, Leaders, Pastors and Priests of Jesus’ Day, are SEVEN TRANGRESSIONS, that remain Unforgivable, I said, Unforgivable, without a full-throated, public and passionate Repentance.

NOTE TO PASTORS. You will especially take notice of VERSE 10: “Do not let yourselves be called leaders or teachers; for One is your Leader (Teacher), the Christ.” Now to Christ’s Fiery Indictment of the Religious Hypocrites of the Day.

WOE #1: KEEPING PEOPLE OUT OF GOD’S KINGDOM. Here these Preachers and Teachers constitute what one authority calls, “Religious Charlatans,” who actually Block hearers from the Kingdom of God by: (1) Keeping others from hearing the ‘Whole’ Truth of Jesus Christ; (2) Thereby teaching False Doctrines. Example: They preach only a ‘Partial Jesus,’ emphasizing, ‘ad nauseum,’ His love and mercy and grace and unconditional forgiveness, falsely presenting Him very nearly as blasphemously Indifferent to serious, sustained Sin and Repentance. This “Shuts up the Kingdom of heaven,” a Doctrinal Offense of the most grievous proportion, that could lead the unsuspecting congregant to Hellfire. Yes, beloved. More on that in my Close. – cf. V. 13; 2 Peter 2:1

WOE #2: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF WIDOWS. Here what we have are “Pious Thieves,” working in conjunction of Denying the True Messiah from the pulpit, with the concomitant, shameful Error of ‘Fleecing’ unsuspecting dowagers and widows and old women of their holdings. This is done through something called, ‘Casuistry,’ or using False Reasoning through lengthy, complex theological discourses and other deceptive oration to ‘sound’ like pious men and scholars. All the while they hunger after those Tithes and Offerings, beloved, more than pretty much anything else. It’s called Cheating by any other name, or Extortion if you wish, and God singularly hates it, since one of His Chief Commands is to minister to “orphans and widows,” staying clean from the pollution of the world. – cf. V. 14; James 1:27

WOE #3: CREATING SONS OF HELL. Now we have a vile extension of their unbridled Arrogance: Fashioning acolytes and ‘Disciples of Themselves’ instead of the Messiah. As one theologian put it, these Teachers and Pastors end up creating “scabs” to the true Church, teaching their proselytes to be just like them, thereby becoming Hindrances to the Coming of Messiah. The usual motivation of these Leaders is to “swell their numbers” almost at any expense, including shaving and excluding the harsher Sayings of God, the Prophets, and the Apostles, thereby ‘Diluting the Truth’ along the way. This is the way of “Super Apostles,” who often construct a Denominational (or Personality-based) ‘Cult Following.’ Which is, by the way, again, Heresy: “Belief or opinion contrary to Orthodox Religious (especially Christian) Doctrine.” – cf. V. 15; Acts 15:24-31

WOE #4: BOGUS VOWS. Here we have the all too present reality of Church Leaders who are willing to Promise anything that will mollify the congregation into believing they are “Ok with God,” again, very nearly no matter what they do or say. The real tragedy here is that the False Spiritual Leader has rendered them so bloody Ignorant of Biblical Truth, having developed a trust level with the congregation, that they will ‘Believe anything,’ as again with the disastrously Naïve Christian once again. This is the stuff of an Ambivalent Church, not knowing what to say “Yes” to or “No to, again defaulting to the Pastor on matters pertaining to even Life and Death, Right and Wrong, True and False. This in turn leads an entire Nation off the Biblical Rails, contributing to its Final Destruction, because they were, in effect, “Without a Preacher.” – V. 16-22; Romans 10:14

WOE #5: REFUSING TRUE COMPASSION. The saying, ‘Majoring in minors’ comes to mind, by one account. Not focusing on what is truly important to God, since those things are often ‘too hard’ for the assembly to hear. At least in the minds of the Preachers. An Example might be to ensure that the members never say a bad word, to be kind to all equally, and to live a quiet and sanctified life. You know: ‘Don’t make waves.’ But all this ‘Polite Insularity,’ living inside the tight and tidy little Church Conclave, catastrophically Ignores the Towering Corruption of a Complicit Church that places its faith in and commitment to a wicked political leader, or remains Indifferent to him. At the same time, turns a Blind Eye to the shunning and persecution of those who refuse to do so, the true worshipers, if you will. Thus, the Lord publicly shouts, shouts I say: ‘Straining at a gnat while swallowing a camel!’ – cf. VV. 23-24

WOE #6: INWARDLY CORRUPT. I have already defined and denounced, along with our Lord, “Hypocrites!” which He termed, “Whitewashed tombs full of dead men’s bones!” Now for a Jew to use such a term is searing indictment indeed, and here’s why. “Whitewashed Tombs” is a term to the Jewish community that is commensurate with that which is grotesquely, horrifyingly ‘Unclean” (Numbers 19:11). Thus, by ‘Mere Association’ with those who are in Alliance with such Corruption, the believer is “Defiled,” or ‘infected’ if you will, destined to suffer the same Judgment as the Contaminated. This is precisely why I continue to inveigh against Joining the Sacred Name of Jesus Christ to the obviously, publicly and irrefutably Profane political leader. This is being done by the vast majority of Christian Churches in America as we see Politics wedded to the Faith – a ‘Marriage’ quite literally fashioned in the Bowels of Hell. – V.25-28; 1 Corinthians 10:21

WOE #7: AFFLICTING THE RIGHTEOUS. – The Jews have a word, often kept in hushed conversations today, but used in the Camps of the Holocaust, fearfully and selectively. It is the very worst insult that a Jew can use to describe another Jew: “KAPO.” These were Jews chosen by the Nazi SS to help oversee the other Jews, giving them special treatment and benefits for their Compromised Cooperation. They would too often beat and even kill their fellow Jews, to stay alive, despite this abomination, a monumental offense to both God and Israel. It is the same today, beloved: Those Churches and Pastors who insult and marginalize and Force out of fellowship those members who try valiantly to hold the line on Truth and Honor, are ‘Christian Kapos,’ and the Penalty they shall pay is virtually indescribable. Except by the Messiah. Look it up in Matthew 7, if you dare. – cf. V. 29-33; Matthew 7:23

SUMMARY. These Pastors and Teachers and Leaders were therefore Characterized by Five Traits, all despicable to our Most High God.

They claim authority for themselves they do not have.

They make hypocritical demands of their followers they do not follow themselves.

They are in the final analysis, loveless and uncaring for those who suffer the most under their hypocritical rule, who refuse to ‘go along to get along.’

They make pretentious displays of their religiosity and important connections to the rich, famous and influential, both secular and ecclesiastical.

They are proud and arrogant, though they may pretend to speak and present otherwise. – cf. Scott I. Harris, “Seven Woes to Spiritual Hypocrites,” October 21, 2018

LAST THOUGHTS

I realize that I am hard on Pastors and Teachers, but the One who tells me to be so is motivated by Love, while my motives are likely too often less than lovely. To be Blunt: I am outraged more and more, beloved, as I continue to walk out of sermon after sermon that is either tainted by Self-Interest, ‘Softened truth,’ or worse, Heretical Teaching, even ‘Doctrines of devils.’ – cf. 1 Timothy 1:2

EXAMPLE. I even heard just last week an otherwise gifted pastor and teacher nearly shout that believers cannot “Find Jesus” (a direct quote), unless they “attend church.” Now wait: Yes, we are told by Paul to “not forsake the assembling together” for the exhortation that it brings, but to assert that I can only do this inside the four walls of the brick and mortar Church – Covid-19 dangers notwithstanding – speaks of Desperate Self-interest to me, not compassion. – cf. Hebrews 10:25

This cannot continue, beloved. I assure you, it will not much longer.

THE PRAXIS. This is where the Church in America is, beloved, like it or not to hear it pronounced, pronounced publicly, and more and more frequently – Just like Jesus did. His is the Template I follow here, and none other.

But is the Church listening? Are American Pastors willing to Humble themselves before both God and the Congregation to clearly Declare the Necessity to:

Break Covenant with all dark alliances, with no exceptions.

Prepare for the Storms ahead by remaining vigilant and uncompromised, and spiritually, doctrinally, practically, fully ready.

Protect the Name and Witness of Christ at every cost, even their own lives, if necessary.

These are Hard Things, I realize, but then the Apostles and our King endured even Harder Things, who said this:

“If the world hates you [and it does], know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would love [you as] its own and would treat you with affection. But you are not of the world [you no longer belong to it], but I have chosen you out of the world. And because of this the world hates you.” – JOHN 15:18, AMP

I wonder: Will American Pulpits now be willing to Teach this, as Canonical Supplement to the “God is Love” Narrative? I wonder, beloved, I wonder.

FINAL QUESTION. Why was Jesus so Tough on the Teachers and Leaders of the Temple – and, therefore, why I am so tough with Today’s Pastorate? Let’s finish this point in crystalline clarity, in order to fully grasp the Reason God is sending what I believe are ‘THE PLAGUES OF EGYPT’ to American shores.

Pastor Harris helps to take us home for this important question, to prepare us for Part II of our Study.

“The greatest threat any person will face [in the days ahead] is that which will keep him from receiving God’s Gift of mercy and grace in Jesus Christ … But the Greater Threat comes from those that claim to lead to God, but in fact lead away from Him. The Greatest Threats to the human soul are False Prophets and False Teachers. They convince people that they have the Truth and will be with Jesus in Heaven, but instead it is a Lie that leads to Eternal Damnation.

This is why Jesus, who is so tender and kind to all others, is harsh and fierce with the False Prophets and Teachers of His time. That is why He gave such a strong warning in Matthew 7 about those who ‘call’ Him Lord and ‘claim’ to do all sorts of things in His name, but He will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; Depart from Me, you who practice Lawlessness.’” – “Seven Woes to Spiritual Hypocrites,” October 21, 2018; edited

Selah, beloved, as never before.

CODA. Perhaps this explains my own fury and passion, dear friends, Pastors and Teachers especially – Life and Death are on the line here. Not just Temporal, but Eternal. The time for ‘Play Church’ is far gone, appropriate to ‘THE DAYS OF AWE,’ as the Jews call them, even as we near the End of Rosh Hashana, and broach Yom Kippur, “The Day of Atonement,” the Holiest day of the year in Judaism.

Perhaps indeed God is Turning a Page from His Great Book today, fairly begging us to Finally Turn as well, Away from Fictions, and Toward Truth and Honor and Courage.

Bearing in mind another forgotten fact, as Tony Denton reminds:

“In this Passage, Jesus wasn’t just sad, He was Mad. He had put up with these Hypocrites and Blind Fools long enough. He knew His Time was being fulfilled anyway, so He laid it on the line this time, not pulling any punches as He put them in their places.” – “The Seven Woes of Matthew 23,” November 2007; edited

Neither do I pull back from The Brink any longer, my friends. Time for gentler ways and false comforts are long past. And Now: The Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth, so help us God. – cf. John 8:31-32

That is Real Freedom Writ Large, True Discipleship bathed in Integrity, both now and then Forever and ever. An Honor reserved for the Church Militant and Triumphant in these Last Days.
