1. FIRST THOUGHTS

In 1999, I read a book toward the end of the Clinton presidency by Reagan Republican leader, WILLIAM BENNETT, that was electrifying in its timeliness and powerful thesis: ‘The Death of Outrage: Bill Clinton and the Assault on Christian Values.’

Now consider that same moralist William Bennett, following his wholesale endorsement of the Republican president just this year, in relation to the Covid-19 Crisis.

“Is it too much to ask for some perspective with numbers we do know about, numbers which have never shut down our country, much less a church or synagogue, much less entire industries; numbers which have never restricted travel or put this nation into one big frenzy?  In any given month in America, we lose about 54,000 Americans to heart disease; 50,000 to cancer; 14,000 to asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema; 12,000 to stroke; 10,000 to Alzheimer’s; 7,000 to diabetes; 5,600 to drug overdoses; and 4,700 to influenza and pneumonia. Since February, in America, coronavirus: 9,500…Those deaths give us over 157,000 deaths a month. Given all that is being done about one cause of death, COVID-19, it turns out this is a very advantaged disease, indeed.” – NANCY LETOURNEAU, “Bill Bennett Makes it Clear that Trumpism is Nothing New to the GOP,” ‘Washington Monthly,’ April 13, 2020; edited

HYPOCRISY. “Simulation; a feigning to be what one is not; or dissimulation, a concealment of one’s real character or motives. More generally, hypocrisy is simulation, or the assuming of a false appearance of virtue or religion; a deceitful show of a good character, in morals or religion; a counterfeiting of religion. deceitful appearance; false pretence. This Sin, the Sin of Fraudulent Dishonesty before God Himself, is the core treachery of the majority of the American Church. It is, in the final analysis, MOCKERY against the Godhead.

THE GRAND REPOSITION. The stunning Contrast between the former moralist, Mr. Bennett, and his later iteration as a full-on Trumpian Pragmatist, is nothing short of breathtaking. Tragically, it is Toxic Microcosm of what has taken place in almost the entire American Church in the past four years. 

Further, the Onset of this Grand Repositioning has a START DATE, the tragic Beginning of what historian PAUL JOHNSON earlier called The American ‘Dégringolade:’ “A quick deterioration or breakdown, as of a situation or circumstance..” – cf. ‘Modern Times: The World from the Twenties to the Eighties,’ 1983, Chapter 7

2. THE SEISMIC SHIFT

I will, with the help of a recent, thorough analysis of these matters, argue that the Real Change among Christian Evangelicals is traceable to a single, closed door meeting hosted by then candidate Donald Trump and several hundred Christian Evangelical Leaders on JUNE 21, 2016. 

BEN HOWE’S ACCOUNT. This literally and spiritually changed the course of America – and World -history. Here is one spellbinding account, reported at some length given the massive importance of the event.

“The Bellwether for me was a tweet from Evangelical leader JERRY FALWELL, JR. June 21, 2016. It was a Photo that, for me, spoke a thousand truths. Falwell, the head of premier Evangelical Christian school, Liberty University, had endorsed Trump earlier [in January] of that year. At the time of the endorsement, I was far from convinced Trump would even be the nominee, so the gravity of it all just didn’t hit me. Not until this tweet and now famous Photo.

‘Honored to introduce [Donald Trump] at Religious Leader Summit in NYC today! He did an incredible job!’ the tweet read. In the Photo, Falwell stood shoulder to shoulder with Trump with his thumb extended upward in approval. 

Falwell, Jr.’s wife, Becki Falwell, was also in the Photo, and just over her left shoulder one of the many magazine covers proudly displayed on Donald Trump’s wall was clearly and prominently visible. Trump appeared on the cover of all the magazines on display, but one cover was of particular note: The March 1990 edition of ‘Playboy,’ with playmate Brandi Brandt wearing nothing but Trump’s tuxedo jacket.” – ‘The Immoral Majority,’ 2020, pp. 3-4; edited

Howe noted further deep structure Impact within the Church, having essentially being Seduced on that One Dark Day, though before then, virtually all the attendees had been initially and fervently opposed to Trump.

“And yet, some Christians at the Meeting seemed persuaded by what Trump had to say. ‘I liked the fact that leaders that I have great respect for – Mike Huckabee, Dr. Ben Carson, Ronnie Floyd, David Jeremiah, Dr. Dobson, many of those who posed questions today – they seemed very pleased with what they’re hearing, not only on the floor today, but BEHIND THE SCENES,’ [Evangelical Ann] White said. ‘Hearing these men, who I really respect, testify to the fact that that they really believe that Donald Trump is a Christian – maybe not of the kind you and I are, or maybe, they didn’t say this, not as far along in his development as a Christian … I think that’s a pretty bold statement,’ said the Christian radio host E. W. Jackson in his call. Several Christian broadcasters joining the call with Jackson emphasized the one Question on their minds at the meeting: Is Trump really a Christian.” – Howe, 2020, p. 29; edited, emphasis my own

THE INFECTION SPREADS. “Nearly 180 Evangelical Leaders across America signed a letter sent to the president of ‘Christianity Today’ (CT) on Sunday morning [December 22, 2019] condemning an op-ed the popular Christian magazine’s editor-in-chief published on Thursday that called for the removal of President Donald Trump over his ‘profoundly immoral’ dealings with Ukraine.” – CHRISTINA ZHAO, ‘Newsweek,’ December 22, 2019; edited

Howe closed off this section with this quote, that literally sent my blood to boil:

“These Christian leaders hoped to push Christians in favor of what amounted to a form of ‘Pragmatic Faith.’ The idea being that no matter how much a vote for Trump seemed to DEFY conventional Evangelical thinking, God knows what He’s doing.” – Howe, 2020, pp. 29-30; edited, emphasis my own

JESUS SPEAKS. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord] …

For whoever wishes to save his life [in this world] will [eventually] lose it [through death], but whoever loses his life [in this world] for My sake will find it [that is, life with Me for all eternity]. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world [wealth, fame, success], but forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory and majesty of His Father with His angels, and then He will repay each one in accordance with what he has done.’” – MATTHEW 6:24; 16:24-27, AMP

SPIRITUAL HOMOCIDE. Thus it is that the Death of American Outrage may well have begun during the Clinton presidency, but has come full flower in the last four years of Donald Trump’s ascent to the highest office in the land. Concomitant, notably and tragically, with the very Nadir of the Church’s reputation for holding the High Moral Ground.

Which by any measure, it no longer holds, not even by a little, beloved. 

3. THE CONSEQUENCE

There is so very much wrapped up in this Death of Outrage Idea, that it is a challenge to get my arms fully around it. But this one thing is prominent as a Dreadful Consequence of it:

God’s Removal of His Covering from America.

ISAIAH 22:8. “Then [God] removed the protective covering of Judah; and you looked to the weapons in the House of the Forest [the king’s armory] in that day.” – AMPC

• REMOVED. A disastrous occasion for any nation. From the Hebrew, ‘Galah’ [גֶּלֶה]: “To uncover; to depart; go into exile; to discover or show oneself [naked to an enemy]; to be (fully) revealed; to reveal one’s foundations; to disclose or lay bare [for all to see]; to make known secrets (or secret places); to strip, denudate, unveil; stark exposure to shame.”

• PROTECTION. Coupled with the ‘Galah’ above, here the word is ‘Cakak’ [סָכַךְ]: “Cover; to overshadow, screen [from harm]; defense; to hedge in; join together (with Jehovah); shut up; to fence in (safely); to hide or conceal; shelter from evil; preservation from loss, injury or annoyance; a writing [or agreement] that secures from molestation.”

• LOOKED TO THE ARMORY. Since God had ‘departed,’ then Judah looked to their standby aresenal at the “House of the Forest” in Lebanon for her help. From the Hebrew ‘Nesheq’ [נֶשֶׁק]: “Equipment, weapons; armory;  military ordinance; arms; arsenal; armor used for the whole apparatus of war; in a spiritual sense, a good conscience, faith and Christian graces are called armor (Romans 13:1; Ephesians 6:1; 2 Corinthians 6:1).” The House of the Forest [הַלְּבָנוֹן בֵּית יַעַר] was likely King Solomon’s royal guardhouse used as an arsenal.

COMMENTARY. “‘And He discovered the covering of Judah’ … Either God Himself, who uncloaked them of their Hypocrisy, as Dr. Lightfoot; or took away His power and presence from them, and His protection of them, and discovered their weakness; or rather the enemy Sennacherib: And then by the covering is meant, not Jerusalem, nor the temple, as Jarchi and Kimchi, for neither of them came into his hands; but the fenced Cities of Judah, which were the strength and protection of the country; these He took and dismantled, 2 Kings 18:13, and when this was done, it was high time for the Jews at Jerusalem to look about them, and provide for their defence and safety. ‘And thou, didst look in that day to the armour of the House of the Forest;’ to see what store of armour they had, in what condition it was, and to take from hence, and furnish themselves and soldiers with it, to annoy the enemy, and defend themselves.’” – JOHN GILL, ‘Exposition of the Whole Bible,’ 19 vols., 1748-1811; edited

The Point. Israel, very much like today’s America, had to look to her Natural Resources against all enemies, since Yahweh had fully ‘Departed’ from Israel due to her sustained Sin of Hypocrisy. She was, as with the United States without Massive Repentance starting with the Houses of God: ‘On her own.”

Selah. Selah.

4. AN UNCOVERED AMERICA

Please understand one thing before reading this next section: Before Almighty God, the last thing I wish to do is become nothing more than some sort of Alarmist for the sake of any sensationalism. On the contrary, I have labored hard in past months to remind everyone of this:

Shelter in Christ, our only true Security. – cf. Psalm 27:5; Ephesians 1:13

That said, I propose in the starkest of terms what any military strategist would affirm in a heartbeat: The United States of America, given over to dramatic developments in the PAST FOUR YEARS, is in her Most Vulnerable Position to enemy attack in modern history.

Here’s why.

1. A PRESIDENT’S WITHDRAWAL. “In 45 tweets this week (so far) the president has not said a single word about the record deaths from COVID. Or economic stimulus. Or the Russian hack. Not. One. Word. Instead, it is an endless litany of complaints, self-aggrandizement, and conspiracy theorizing. We have never seen a Dereliction of Duty at this scale from an American president. With citizens dying by the thousands every single day and the federal government being raided by the intelligence services belonging to his good friend, he pouts and rages and tweets and tries to overturn a free and fair election in order to break our Democratic Republic. There is no precedent for this. No historical analog to help us understand the scale of destruction and the level of irresponsibility, stupidity, and derangement.” – JONATHAN V. LAST, Executive Editor, “Where is the President of the United States?” ‘The Bulwark,’ December 17, 2020; edited

2. GOD’S WITHDRAWAL. “If America was a Nation built on the concept that Rights come from God, and that government is solely in place to protect and secure those Rights for the individual — it was and it is — then it stands to reason that in order to keep that Principle in place, two things are needed: First, Americans must believe in God. Second, Americans must recognize God as the Leader by obeying His will. Which is why Pew Research Center’s latest ‘Global God Divide’ finding that only 44% of Americans think they need the heavenly Creator to shape their morals and values is so illuminating. This country is in a free-fall of cultural rot and moral decay. And how the culture goes, so, too, the politics. That’s what morals that bend and bow to human will bring … It’s hardly coincidental that all this cultural spiraling and political turmoil comes as more and more Americans are, as Pew put it, pooh-poohing the Bible, church, godly teachings, and the idea of a God who actively governs in the thoughts and deeds of believers.” – CHERYL K. CHUMLEY, Online Opinion Editor, “America Can’t be Moral Without God,” ‘Washington Times,’ August 1, 2020; edited

IN SUM. These Two Historic Events are joined at the spiritual, cultural and political hip; they are inseparable. Though if I were pressed to tell you which came first, it would most assuredly be God’s Withdrawal in Response to America’s Rejection of Him over a period of 120 years, exponentially accelerated since JUNE 21, 2016.

Now please Listen to the Apostle Paul every so carefully, with America and the Church closely in mind here.

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked [He will not allow Himself to be ridiculed, nor treated with contempt nor allow His precepts to be scornfully set aside]; for whatever a man sows, this and this only is what he will reap. For the one who sows to his flesh [his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses] will reap from the flesh ruin and destruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” – GALATIANS 6:7-8, AMP

I have said it before, but will write it once again until God stays my pen: Without Repentance, God is Finished with America. Neither Biden, nor our 1,750 active nuclear weapons, nor all the prayers of an impotent Church, nor the wishes of the reelection of Donald Trump, shall be sufficient to bring Repair and Restoration of a Nation moving rapidly toward Extinction – for all the reasons stated above.

Harsh, I know. But it’s the only Conclusion I am able to draw after over 40 years of studying the Scriptures, American history, and contemporary American politics. This is what All Three of these Sources argue forcefully for us to confront. Or not.

Time is very nearly gone, and so the Church and the Nation must crumple to her knees and Beg, I say again, Beg Forgiveness for the Reproach we have become to our Maker and Founder. Elsewise, I promise you – All is lost; it’s only a matter for Time now.

5. SOME FINAL THOUGHTS

So a few concluding reflections on this entire notion of “The Absence of Outrage,” and why it’s such an important Index of the Current American Condition. 

First, some Definitions.

OUTRAGE. “A strong Moral Emotion characterized by a combination of surprise, disgust, and anger, usually in reaction to a grave personal offense. It comes from old French ‘Ultrage’, which in turn borrows from classical Latin ‘Ultra’, meaning ‘Beyond’. ‘Moral Outrage’ is the emotion of outrage experienced in reaction to an injustice, as such involving a moral judgement, and is often accompanied by a desire to shame and/or punish wrongdoers.” – EDITORS, ‘Wikipedia,’ December 21, 2020; edited

From this we must grasp the terrible importance that such ‘Moral’ Outrage is to a fully functioning, vibrant Church, and consequently, the Nation. Christ Commissioned His people with TWO GREAT CHARGES, that follow from His own Words.

1. THE GREAT COMMISSION. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words], baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always [remaining with you perpetually—regardless of circumstance, and on every occasion], even to the end of the age.” – MATTHEW 28:19-20, AMP

Précis. ‘Go where God tells you to go, obey His every Word, teach only the whole Truth, and honor baptism.’

2. THE CULTURAL COMMISSION. “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste (purpose), how can it be made salty? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and walked on by people [when the walkways are wet and slippery]. You are the light of [Christ to] the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven.” – MATTHEW 5:13-16, AMP

Précis. ‘Remain strong in the Faith, acting as a preservative of that which is right in society; likewise, be shining with the Truth at all times, both of which Commend the Good, and Expose that which is Evil.’

HOW ARE WE DOING, LORD? It depends. It depends on where the Individual and the Church as a whole are in relation to our Faith Commitment. It follows, therefore, to answer this vital, frankly Existential Question, we must assess, best we can, HOW MANY in the Church are truly doing well, spiritually speaking, and how many are not.

You already know what’s coming, don’t you?

THE CHRISTIAN WITNESS. In a compelling piece written recently by a journalist for the ‘Washington Examiner’ under the title, “Unwavering Loyalty to Trump Damages Evangelical’s Christian Witness,” we quickly learn this. 

“BETH MOORE, the prominent evangelical Bible study leader and speaker, excoriated enthusiastic Christians supporting President Trump in several tweets that went viral over the weekend. Moore voiced her concerns that some Christians seem to love the outgoing president more than God.

‘I do not believe these are days for mincing words. I’m 63 1/2 years old & I have never seen anything in these United States of America I found more astonishingly seductive & dangerous to the saints of God than Trumpism. This Christian nationalism is not of God. Move back from it. 

Fellow leaders, we will be held responsible for remaining passive in this day of seduction to save our own skin while the saints we’ve been entrusted to serve are being seduced, manipulated, USED and stirred up into a lather of zeal devoid of the Holy Spirit for political gain.

And, God help us, we don’t turn from Trumpism to Bidenism. We do not worship flesh and blood. We do not place our faith in mortals. We are the Church of the living God. We can’t sanctify idolatry by labeling a leader our Cyrus. We need no Cyrus. We have a king. His name is Jesus.’

The very essence of the modern Christmas celebration for evangelicals is to usher in a new kingdom whose reach is vast and the ruler of which is humble and kind, yet powerful and just. That ruler is not Trump, and that kingdom is not America. Christians already worship a king. Evangelicals who continue to confuse these concepts do Christ and Christianity a grave disservice.” – NICOLE RUSSELL, December 15, 2020; edited, emphasis my own

THE MESSAGE. This, precisely this, is the very Message that the Church and all American Pastors needed to be sending for the past four years – but have not! Have not. For reasons that have been reported into the dust by the Pew Research Center, the Barna Group, and Gallup (you find it; I’m tapped out). Neither do I know how to break down their intransigence regarding Trump and the staggering Infection he has been on the Nation and the Church.

So where do we go from here? Well, depending on what our seditious, manic president decides to do in the next 30 days, certain not here, as Ms. Russell reports.

“In October, Pew Research Center reported that Evangelical support for Trump had slipped, though data from Pew and Gallup show that white evangelical support for Trump remained strong through the election. ‘The AP VoteCast survey shows that 81% of white Evangelical Protestant voters went for Trump this year, compared with 18% who voted for Biden,’ a post-election Gallup report reads.”

6. OUR ONLY HOPE

Forgive me, but this crucial point reminds me of the poignant plea from Princess Leia Organa in the 1977 ‘Star Wars’ series: “Help Me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re My Only Hope.”

Silly as that Analogy may strike you, strike you it must. That is to say: Rather than bank on getting a better president, or governor, or state representative in the Senate or House, or more weapons, I propose a much simpler Algorithm – and, the most challenging, given the trajectory of our historic American Apostasy.

This proffered by businessman and Bible teacher, DON BRITTON. He is writing, ironically enough, for the pro-Trump flagship Christian publication, ‘Charisma News,’ a nonetheless excellent piece entitled, “What True Repentance Really Looks Like,” May 17, 2020; edited

I love this teaching since Mr. Britton minces no words nor trifles with niceties, by bolting straight out of the gates with the Apostle Paul’s incendiary Letter to the Hebrews.

“‘For if we willfully continue to sin after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who despised Moses’ law died without mercy in the presence of two or three witnesses. How much more severe a punishment do you suppose he deserves, who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded the blood of the covenant that sanctified him to be a common thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine,’ says the Lord, ‘I will repay’ And again He says, ‘The Lord will judge His people’ (HEBREWS 10:26-30).

He is obviously NOT talking about an unsaved person, but someone who was once saved, who once had received the sacrifice for sins, who once was sanctified by the blood of Jesus and who once belonged to God. He said that He would Judge His people.

The way anyone tramples underfoot the Son of God, regards as unclean His blood and insults the Spirit of Grace is to willfully continue in sin after being saved. This person will be destroyed in the same Fire as all the other enemies of God, unless he repents before it is too late. God will judge His people!” 

ANY QUESTIONS? I should think not, but just in case we might need a Doctrinal Chaser, as it were, here it is.

“Here in verse 26, Apostasy is defined as ‘Sinning deliberately AFTER receiving the knowledge of the Truth.’ Like Judas, the person has heard the Gospel. He knows the way of salvation; he has even pretended to receive it; but then he deliberately repudiates it … Willful repudiation of God’s beloved Son is a sin of immense magnitude. God will sit in Judgment on all who are guilty of it. He has said, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay (see Deuteronomy 32:35). Vengeance in this sense means ‘full justice.’” – WILLIAM MACDONALD, Believer’s Bible Commentary, 1995, pp. 2192-2193; edited, emphasis my own

Now the Theology here is messy, in as much as Bible scholars are not of one mind on whether these people a truly saved, but fallen away (apostate), or were never saved and therefore Judged as any other unbeliever.

My Suggestion: Don’t presume! If there is the slightest Hint of Conviction in you, drop to you knees and set it right with the Lord, stat! Again, Time is nearly gone for that ‘Spirit of Grace’ to be extended in this Final Hour of the Age of the Church.

CODA. America is very nearly done, in my long-studied view. And her Church has tragically led the way to ‘The Brink,’ a subject I will touch on in considerable detail in Part III of this important series. 

So let me end on this Note of Hope from a favorite passage about God’s Heart toward the truly humble and contrite.

“So repent [change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret past sins] and return [to God—seek His purpose for your life], so that your sins may be wiped away [blotted out, completely erased], so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord [restoring you like a cool wind on a hot day.” – ACTS 3:19, AMP

There is still ‘a little Time,’ beloved, but so precious little. Take God’s hand if you be one of those who has vouchsafed ‘The Wolf’ among us, whom you first endorsed. Do it now, as our King readies all things for His Tumultuous Return in the days ahead. 

Though we know not the Hour, we surely are commanded to ‘Discern the Times’ that are ripe for Judgment ever so soon.

He’s Coming. Be ready.
