WOE TO THE SHEPHERDS! THE LION OF JUDAH ROARS OUT OF ZION IN THE LAST DAYS – PART I: TAKING STOCK
SCRIPTURE. “I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a Man with a measuring line in His hand. Then said I, ‘Whither goest Thou?’ And He said unto me, ‘To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.’” – ZECHARIAH 2:1-2, KJV; emph. my own
TAKING STOCK. “To review or make an overall assessment of a particular situation, typically as a prelude to making a decision.”
QUOTATIONS
DECISIONS. “Overcoming desperation, setting a plan, and making progress are what Happiness actually looks like. What truly differentiates us as individuals is ‘The Road’ we decide to take and why.” ― JORDAN GRUMET Taking Stock, 2022; edited
DENIAL. “Take stock of those around you and you will … hear them talk in precise terms about themselves and their surroundings, which would seem to point to them having ideas on the matter. But start to analyse those ideas and you will find that they hardly reflect in any way ‘The Reality’ to which they appear to refer, and if you go deeper you will discover that there is not even an attempt to adjust the ideas to this Reality.” – ERNEST BECKER, The Denial of Death, 1973; edited
DARING. “‘Search me, O God,’ and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in ‘the way everlasting.’” – KING DAVID, Psalm 139:23-24; New king James, Jerusalem, 1011-971 BC
- FIRST THOUGHTS
One of the most difficult challenges for me as a teacher and writer has been: ‘To remain objective.’ I can’t count the number of times I have cried out to the Lord, “Please God, please! I don’t want to be wrong on this point, but I cannot easily separate my own biases from the objectively truthful content of this situation! Can You help me?”
Friend and colleague DR. MARVIN OLASKY published a marvelous little book in 1988 called, The Prodigal Press, in which he observed that Biblical Objectivity was “The Gold Standard of Journalism.” Yet I would quickly argue that it is also the Gold Standard for all Christians, since it is synonymous with ‘Biblical Truth’ – the Divine Rudder by which we steer our ships toward either Life or Death.
There is ‘only One Narrow Road’ that leads to Life, beloved, and ten thousand wider ones that lead to Death. – cf. Matthew 7:13
So does THE QUESTION loom large indeed during these crucial Days of Divine Sifting:“So, How’m I doin’, Lord:” That Question is dangerous, requiring enormous courage, or “Daring,” IF you fully intend to obey God.
THE WINNNOWING FAN. The Graphic used for this study is telling: Our Savior is unquestionably watching and assessing His people, “Taking Stock,” to see who is truly His own, SEPARATING THEM from all imposters and apostates.
The Baptist speaks as no other about this Epic Hour. Hear him, beloved! Hear him!
“And already the axe [of God’s Judgment] is swinging toward the root of the trees; therefore ‘every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’ As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self—your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment).
‘His winnowing fork is in His hand,’ and He will thoroughly clear out His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat (believers) into His barn (kingdom), but He will burn up the chaff (the unrepentant) with unquenchable fire.” – MATTHEW 3:10-12, AMP
Well now, just what are we to make of this, do you think? I tell you straight: A great, great deal. But let me turn to a wiser scholar to tell us about its KEY IDEA.: “Winnowing Fork.”
The eminent British theologian, academic and Bishop of Gloucester, CHARLES JOHN ELLICOTT writes: “‘Whose fan is in his hand.’—The Scene brought before us is that of the large hardened surface which was the ‘threshing-floor’ of the East, the sheaves of corn thrown over it, the oxen treading on them, the large Winnowing Fan driving on them the full force of the strong current of air, leaving the Wheat in the middle, while the Chaff is driven to the outskirts of the field to be afterwards swept up and burnt.
The Metaphor. [It] was a sufficiently familiar one … The new features here are (1) that the ‘Coming One,’ the expected Christ, is to be the Agent in the process; (2) that the Old Testament imagery rests in the ‘scattering’ of the Chaff, and this passes on to the ‘burning’; (3) that the Fire is said to be ‘unquenched,’ or perhaps ‘unquenchable.’ The interpretation of the Parable lies on the surface. ‘The Chaff are the ungodly and evildoers. The Unquenched Fire is the Wrath of God against evil, which is, in its very nature, Eternal, and can only cease with the cessation or transformation of the evil.” – An Old and New Testament Commentary for English Readers, 1878, 1897; edited
- THE LESSON. Though it should be obvious to all of us by now, it is most stunningly and dangerously, not! The Church, especially in the Spirit filled Charismatic and Pentecostal traditions, is teaching essentially that: ‘We are all wheat, no matter our conduct! Indeed, further, that there is no Fire!’ (except for Democrats).
- THE RESULT. “Christians” who are in it for all the shiny stuff, who are no more prepared to engage the Great Storm that is approaching than five-year old children at day camp, ‘will perish!’ They shall prove to be the first ones swept away in the First Floods of God’s Wrath and Satan’s Lies.
I so hope and pray that Pastors especially will take this warning most seriously, indeed gravely, since their responsibility for Teaching Right Doctrine is beyond existential.
JAMES THE APOSTLE wrote this: “Not many [of you] should become teachers [serving in an official teaching capacity], my brothers and sisters, for you know that we [who are teachers] will be judged by a higher standard [because we have assumed greater accountability and more condemnation if we teach incorrectly]” (3:1).
¿Está claro, mis queridas compañeros? ¡Así lo ruego!
- TWO AMERICAN CHURCHES
Now we build upon this and the teaching from last week that established there are essentially ‘Two Priesthoods’ – that of Zadok, and that of Abiathar. I extend the argument to propose that there are also TWO CHRISTIAN CHURCHES.
One is True. One is False.
It comes as no surprise that in the very Last Days, this ‘Historic Bifurcation’ becomes even more pronounced – the very manifestation of what the Lord and his Apostles prophesied would take place.
JESUS THE MESSIAH unequivocally tells us why this would be the case in the Last Days.
“At that time MANY will be offended and repelled [by their association with Me] and will fall away [from the One whom they should trust] and will betray one another [handing over believers to their persecutors] and will hate one another. MANY false prophets will appear and mislead MANY. Because lawlessness is increased, the love of MOST people will grow cold. But the one who endures and bears up [under suffering] to the end will be saved.” – MATTHEW 24:10-13, AMP; emph. my own
By His Teaching then, “MANY” will fall away! From the Greek term, ‘Polus’ [πολύς]: “Mostly, largely, plenteously; most often [the case]; high in number, multitudinous; great in amount; abundant; a [very] large part of mankind; i.e., comprising a great number of individuals.”
So next we briefly turn to a brief consideration of the MAJORITY CHURCH followed by the MINORITY CHURCH.
- THE MANY. Although I’ve reported this study before, it bears powerfully on the point that I’m about to make here. In August of 2014, DR. GEORGE BARNA’S distinguished research team reported the following results of a nationwide survey of over 1,000 Pastors from all denominations: “What we’re finding is that when we ask them about all the key issues of the day, [90 percent of them are] telling us, ‘Yes, the Bible speaks to every one of these issues.’ Then we ask them, ‘Well, are you teaching your people what the Bible says about those issues?’—and the numbers drop … to less than 10 percent of pastors who say they will speak to it’” (J. LeClaire, “Most Pastors Avoid Controversial Issues to Keep Tithes Up,” Charisma, Aug. 13, 2014; edited).
- THE FEW. By stunning contrast, we turn now to an excellent piece by a courageous pastor who has already called out support for Donald Trump as destructive to the Church. DAVID MATHIS, writing for Desiring God (Sep. 18, 2022), posits Three Characteristics of a faithful (American) pastor. (1) Humbled – According to Titus 1:7, “He must not be arrogant.” (2) Whole – “Does he have integrity? Is he whole, the same in public and private?” (3) Honorable – By 1 Timothy 3:7, “Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.” He closes the article with this incisive observation: “Good pastors, as a local team of sober-minded teachers, shine all the brighter in tough times.” That is to say: They shall not waver when adverse winds begin to howl. ‘They stand’ the fiery test of conflict and temptation to compromise!
THE SAGA AT LYNCHBURG. Now this one is very close to my heart, for reasons that will fast become obvious. As most of you know, I worked ten rather successful years at Liberty University from 2006 through 2016, getting to know Jerry Falwell, Jr. and his wife, Becki, reasonably well. I used to champion his business-like demeanor and dry sense of humor, being invited occasionally to sit with his family at our Wednesday Convocations (I never accepted for some strange reason).
To this point. BEN HOWE, writer, podcaster and film maker and now author, has published a blockbuster book by the title of this section: ‘The Immoral Majority,’released in 2019. Here is a superb introduction of Mr. Howe and his book by EMMA GREEN, writing for The Atlantic on August 18, 2019 (edited).
The quotation is long, but powerfully detailed.
“‘Ben Howe is angry at Evangelicals.’ As he describes it, he is angry that they didn’t just vote for Donald Trump in record numbers, but repeatedly provide moral cover for his outrageous failings. He is angry that leaders of the religious right, who long claimed to be the champions of American morality, appear to have gladly traded their values for power. He is angry that Christians claim they support the president because they want to end abortion or protect religious liberty, when supporting Trump suggests that what they really want is a champion who will mock and crush their perceived enemies.
To redeem themselves, Howe believes, evangelicals have to give up their take-no-prisoners culture war.
This is the story Howe, a writer and pundit, tells in his new book, ‘The Immoral Majority’—the title aptly riffs on the Moral Majority, the 1980s-era Christian political machine created by the influential pastor Jerry Falwell. Right-wing Christianity is Howe’s native territory: He grew up attending Falwell’s church in Virginia, Thomas Road Baptist Church, down the street from Liberty University, where Howe’s father, a Southern Baptist pastor, taught classes. In other years, Howe’s family attended First Baptist Church in Dallas, which is now pastored by ROBERT JEFFRESS, one of Trump’s most vocal supporters. After being raised in the bosom of the Religious Right, Howe went on to become a filmmaker, a Tea Party activist, and a blogger for the conservative website RedState, where he spent a not insignificant portion of his time trolling Progressives. He was later fired from that website, along with other writers, because of his vocally anti-Trump views, he claims. (Rosie Gray wrote about The Purge for The Atlantic in the spring of 2018.)
THE PHOTO. Significantly, Howe had prophetically written this on pages 3-4 of his explosive (and largely ignored by the Church) book.
“‘The Bellweather for me was a tweet from Evangelical leader JERRY FALWELL, JR. on June 21, 2016. It was a photo that … spoke a thousand truths. Falwell, the head of premier Evangelical Christian school, Liberty University, had endorsed trump earlier that year … ‘Honored to introduce [Donald Trump] that religious leader summit in NYC today! He did incredible job!’ The tweet read. In the photo, Falwell stood shoulder to shoulder with Trump with his thumb extended upward in approval. Falwell Jr.’s wife, Becki Falwell, was also in the photo, and just over her left shoulder one of the many magazines covers proudly displayed on Donald Trump’s wall was clearly and prominently visible. Trump appeared on the cover of all the magazines on display, but one cover was of particular note: the March 1990 edition of Playboy, with playmate Brandy Brandt wearing nothing but Trump’s tuxedo jacket.”
THE IMPACT. What you must understand, beloved, is that this meeting that took place in New York City on JUNE 21, 2016, was championed and led and driven by Falwell singlehandedly, ‘turned 1,000 Christian leaders around 180 degrees, in one day!’ And from what to what? From Truth to the Lie, from Honor to Disgrace, from Courage to Cowardice – in a Day!
Indeed, for me at least, it was nothing less than: ‘The Day the Christian Church died in America.’
THE AFTERMATH. Although the American Church hardly whispered a peep about Falwell’s catastrophic fall from grace, here is a chunk of it to keep you awake a little bit longer before Judgment comes to the rest the Apostate Church leadership.
As it surely will!
This is taken from the pen of EMILY D. CREWS, Assistant Director of the Martin Marty Center for the Public Understanding of Religion (University of Chicago Divinity, “Religion, Politics, and Jerry Falwell Jr.’s Fall from Grace,” Nov. 11, 2022; edited).
“‘In the summer of 2020,’ the Evangelical world was rocked by scandal when two of its central arbiters of moral righteousness were accused of having engaged in a sexual relationship with another man. Evangelical power player Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife, Becki, had reportedly engaged in an affair with Giancarlo Granda, a young pool attendant, whom they met on vacation at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. Although he denied any involvement in the affair, Falwell, the son and scion of televangelist and Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell Sr., was forced to resign from his position as chancellor of Liberty University.”
There is vastly more to this filthy story, but that ought suffice for now to speak volumes about the twisted state of American Christianity that still refuses to publicly rebuke Falwell and Liberty University’s Board of Trustees. Indeed, they “rewarded” Falwell with a $10.5 million compensation package to just go away and leave them to their important business of “Training Champions for Christ.”
THE VERDICT. Because the Church remains silent as a Church Mouse – a proper designation – it remains Jerry Falwell Jr.’s Church. It remains the Church of Franklin Graham and Robert Jeffress and Steve Bannon and especially, Donald John Trump. He owns them to this very day, their Deafening Silence the Church’s Epitaph.
Only The Remnant Remains. This the only ‘True Church’ of the Lord, in comparatively tiny numbers. TO THE QUESTION: ‘Of which Church are you, beloved? WHO have you chosen as your Teacher – God, or Man?
- THE TEACHING
Added
For some time now I have been writing a great deal about ‘Making Choices.’ All human beings of course understand that we are always making choices on a daily, hourly, or even moment to moment basis. But in these Perilous Times, the choices we make are more consequential than any other time I can remember in my nearly 80 years on this planet.
THE “DECIDERS.” Each time I use that term, “Decider,” I think of President George W. Bush when he was once asked to describe his role as President. You may recall his telling reply: “‘I’m the Decider,” and I decide what’s best!” (April 2006).
In the Context of today’s discussion, we will alternatively refer to Jesus Christ as ‘The Ultimate Decider,’ and each Pastor as the ‘Lesser Magistrate’ Decider, if you will. That term is borrowed from Protestant thought in which one is subject to a greater authority. In our case, Pastors especially and all followers of Christ are subject to our King in all things.
In ALL things, beloved!
KEY TERM. As always then, we now consider the single concept that is driving this entire Commentary: ‘GOD’S MEASURING LINE.’ It is defined by the Hebrew word:
‘Chebel’ [חֶבֶל]: “A rope or tape used for important measurement, as with a district, inheritance or company [of souls.” It carries the connotation of Judgment or Assessment which can bring sorrow, destruction, or pain, and can refer to the “pangs of childbirth,” or “the distress of exiles” (or those about to be exiled). Also, this term can refer to “a company of prophets” as to their spiritual integrity.
JUDGMENT. My own interpretation of all this is that Messiah ben David is right now engaged in the intense and uniquely comprehensive Examination of His Church, and most especially their “Pastors and “Prophets” – i.e., those leaders who both teach and administrate His local assemblies, or “companies.”
Significantly – Just prior to His Coming’to both Punish or Reward His people, depending.
Here is the work of JOHN GILL once again, to help us appreciate the terrible importance of this Present Hour of Judgment.
COMMENTARY. “‘I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked’ – And saw a Third Vision; which … refers to the Times of the Messiah … ‘And behold a Man with a measuring line in His hand’ – By whom is meant, not Nehemiah, nor Zerubbabel; see Zechariah 4:10 who were concerned in the building of Jerusalem; nor any mere man, nor even a created angel; for, though he may be the same with the other angel, that did not talk with the prophet, Zechariah 2:3 as Kimchi observes; seeing he seems to be superior to him that did; yet not a ministering spirit, ‘but The Messiah,’ Who in this Book is often spoken of as a man … and by ‘the measuring line in his hand’ may be meant ‘Eternal Predestination, the Lamb’s Book of Life.’
Which is in His keeping; and is The Measure and Rule by which He proceeds in the calling, justification, and glorification of the firstborn, whose names are written in Heaven; ‘or the Scriptures of Truth, the Measure and Rule of doctrine, discipline, worship, and conversation;’ and according to which Christ forms, constitutes, and regulates Gospel Churches; see Ezekiel 40:3 [as over against False Churches!].” – An Exposition of the Old and New Testament, 9 vols., 1746-1763; edited
THE WARNING. I am once again honor-bound to shout: “PASTORS! Are you listening, brothers? Our King is this very minute measuring us by His Holy Standard Truth – to see if we are truly His, or the Antichrist’s.
Selah.
- LAST THOUGHTS
THE REAL JESUS. “You have loved righteousness [‘You have delighted’ in integrity, virtue, and uprightness in purpose, thought, and action] and ‘You have hated’ lawlessness (injustice and iniquity). ‘Therefore God, [even] Your God (Godhead), has anointed You with the oil of exultant joy and gladness’ above and beyond Your companions.” – HEBREWS 1:9, AMPC
Do you see it? Just in case, let’s break it down into its TWO MAJOR POINTS. Yep, more logs on the Fire of a Binary Gospel and Reality.
- GOD LOVES. The Greek term for “Delights” is noteworthy: ‘Agapaó’ [ἀγαπάω]. “To wish well, take great pleasure in; denotes the love of reason, esteem; to welcome, long for or desire; deep affection for that which is moral; also a passionate love of duty, honor and the like.” DK: ‘God delights in such things as integrity, virtue, uprightness of purpose, right thought and right action’.
- GOD HATES. Yes, you read that right. Contrary to the legion of saccharine sermons spouted forth each Sunday, that ‘Forgotten Jesus’ also “hates.” From the Greek word, ‘Miseó’ [μισέω]: “To detest, renounce or denounce [utterly reject]; Luke 14:6: ‘If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate (‘love less’ than the Lord) his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life,‘he cannot be My disciple.’” DK: God literally “hates” such things as lawlessness, injustice and iniquity. And in Proverbs 6:16-19, it is apparent that He especially hates lying, liars and hypocrites who pretend to be His but are not!
MATTHEW POOLE. “‘Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity’ – The administration of this King in His Kingdom is suitable to His Throne and Sceptre, it is all goodness; for He so loved Righteousness, and hated Iniquity, being righteous and holy in Himself, in life and death, expiating sin, and sanctifying believers. So that He acts as to both of these properly from Himself, perfectly and for ever. anointed, or of His unction, because He loved the one, and hated the other! Therefore God the Son is the Person to whom the Father speaketh this …
‘Hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness’ – So his Father anointed Him with the Holy Ghost and with power, John 3:34 Acts 10:38; and thereby as endowed, so exalted Him above all kings and prophets who were literally anointed, and above all angels, having Divine power and authority supereminent to all communicated to Him; enjoying the best and highest joy in all His transactions with the Father for us, and which may perfect joy in us.” – English Annotations on the Holy Bible, 1685; edited
I am sorely tempted to just say, “Whew!” after all that, because what we have just covered is akin to detonating a nuclear device in the middle the American Church sanctuaries across the entire spiritual landscape. And in so doing, we have incinerated a thousand false assumptions and false teachers of false ideas concerning: ‘Who God is and who God is not.’
CODA: AN AMERICAN HERO. Appropriately, I want to end this essay with a rare pleasure: Giving Honor to a true American hero in the Era of Trump: MICHAEL JOHN GERSON. Permit me take a bit of time with him first from an Introduction published by Wikipedia (Dec. 7, 2022; edited).
This, followed by my Encomium. NOTE: Gerson speaks for me.
“Michael Gerson was an American journalist and speechwriter. He was a Neoconservative op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, a Policy Fellow with One Campaign, a visiting fellow with the Center for Public Justice, and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. He served as President George W. Bush‘s chief speechwriter from 2001 until June 2006, as a senior policy advisor from 2000 through June 2006, and was a member of the White House Iraq Group.
Gerson was born on May 15, 1964, in Belmar, New Jersey, and raised in an Evangelical Christian family in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Westminster Christian Academy for high school. His paternal grandfather was Jewish. He attended Georgetown University for a year and then transferred to Wheaton College in Illinois, graduating in 1986.
In October 2017, Gerson referred to President Donald Trump‘s ‘fundamental unfitness for high office’ and asked whether he is ‘psychologically and morally equipped to be president? And could his unfitness cause permanent damage to the country?’ He cited ‘the leaked cries for help coming from within the administration.’ They reveal a president raging against enemies, obsessed by slights, deeply uninformed and incurious, unable to focus, and subject to destructive whims.’ In August 2019, Gerson wrote that ‘it is a scandal that ‘White Evangelical Protestants’ are not in a state of panic about their own demographic decline in the United States.’”
SEPTEMBER 1, 2022 (8:00 A.M. EDT). On this date and time Michael Gerson published what would become his last major piece for the Washington Post entitled: “Trump Should Fill Christians with Rage. How Come He Doesn’t?” Why indeed, beloved?
Consider this courageous man’s analysis, comprised of “THREE WOES” concerning American Christianity. It is long, but absolutely vital to quote in full.
- “WOE TO EVANGELICAL HYPOCRISY. Given the evidence of sexual abuse in the Southern Baptist Convention, the corruption and sexual scandal at Liberty University, the sex scandal in the Hillsong ministry, the sexual exploitation revealed in Ravi Zacharias’s ministry, and the years of sexual predation at the (Christian) Kanakuk summer camps, Americans increasingly identify the word ‘Evangelical’ with pretense, scandal and duplicity. In the case of the SBC, victims (mostly women) were ignored, intimidated, dismissed and demeaned. Many of the most powerful Southern Baptist leaders betrayed the powerless, added cruelty on top of suffering and justified their coverup as essential to Christian evangelism. How can hearts ostensibly transformed by Christ be so impervious to mercy?
- WOE TO EVANGELICAL EXCLUSION. In their overwhelming, uncritical support of Trump and other Nationalist Republicans — leaders who could never win elections without Evangelical votes — White religious conservatives have joined a political movement defined by an attitude of ‘Us’ vs. ‘Them,’ and dedicated to the rejection and humiliation of social outsiders and outcasts. From the start, the Trump-led GOP dehumanized migrants as diseased and violent. It attacked Muslims as suspect and dangerous. Even when Evangelical Christians refuse to mouth the words of Racism, they have allied themselves with the promoters of prejudice and white grievance. How can it be that believers called to radical inclusion are the most hostile to refugees of any group in the United States? How can anyone who serves God’s boundless Kingdom of love and generosity ever rally to the political banner ‘America First’?
- AND WOE, THEREFORE, TO CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM. Evangelicals broadly confuse the Kingdom of God with ‘a Christian America,’ preserved by thuggish politicians who promise to prefer their version of Christian rights and enforce Christian values. The political calculation of conservative Christians is simple, and simply wrong.”
NOVEMBER 17, 2022. Michael John Gerson died of kidney cancer accompanied by long bouts of depression disorder, at the age of 58. And with him somehow, a sense that a Last Beacon of True Christian Erudition was to serve as Harbinger for what shall likely inevitably follow.
EPITAPH. Because I see the same things that Mr. Gerson saw. Because I see no visible change in the direction of the Great American Decline. Because I see a Church more deeply entrenched in its own twisted Betrayal of Christ than ever before in my long life. And because of what I see in the Scriptures again and again and again these past several years, I conclude with this.
‘The United States of America and her timid concubine, the Evangelical Church, have effectively committed national suicide.’ It is only a matter of time now before the Twin Fires of God’s Wrath combine with Satan’s Violence to bring final destruction to The American Order.
I hate to write those words, but before God and Man, I can simply write no other. I therefore forcefully advise making Jesus Christ you’re unquestionable King now, and again I say: ‘Right Now!’ That you might serve Him well in what CARL F.H. HENRY once called, the ‘Twilight of a Great Civilization’ (1988).
And by that Grand Decision, we do the noblest thing we could ever achieve: ‘To Finish Well’ – for God, for our family, for our neighbor, and our posterity.
Ever your servant, DK
